Tina Turner is one of my all time favorite singers, up there with Freddie Mercury and David Bowie. I love that you refer to Tina as a top level performer because that is what she is - absolutely the top of the tipity top top! It will be a long time before I stop using the present tense with her since she is so full of energy that even death can’t keep her from being alive.
    Tina rocks!

such informative analysis and details! by far one of my fav live concerts ever. dancing through just this one song along with tina is exhausting. her legs never seem to stop moving, and this was at the second half of the concert. plus, proud mary was still to come. the energy, the performance, the song! the best! 24/7 is another great track from this concert, an underplayed tina song,

Choreography has always been important part of her show from her early days with Ike. The dancing was meant to emphasize, enhance, embellish the show, not take away from it, though I don't think Tina herself could've ever stood still nor wanted to. It's part of who she is! She is the consummate entertainer!
    Thanks Fil!😊

Tina is actually credited for this arrangement and production of the song. Chapman and Knight wrote the bridge and the key change for her version. Another thing her version adds to Bonny's is dynamics. Tina is rarely given credit for it but very few singers have that kind of command over the dynamic range of their voices which than influences how songs are arranged to suit them. It's also why covers of her songs tend to sound lifeless compared to her renditions. She's really using this masterfully in this song even within the first phrase. It builds up from 'call you" to "my heart's on fi-" and than goes softer in "-re".

Tina Turner is hot. Content, production, stage presence, she is dynamic. I was fortunate enough to get to see her live at the Oakland Coliseum in 1985.
This is 15 years later and she's still smoking hot. She's 61 years old here, and she is solid. I can't think of another woman that rocks this hard. Tina Turner is durable.

Scream singing is pretty darn common (Robert Plant comes to mind) Who am I to question success? I would be much more prone to buying her music than paying (or even getting free tickets) to see a live performance. This is somewhat related to how taxing going to a live outdoor show is (CAL Jam I and II come to mind) Stuck in there with all those people. All that elbowing going on in front of the stage,no food, water, restrooms. No, not today (seemed like fun at the time) For me from Tina it is "What's Love Got to do With It" she nailed that one. Thanks Fil.

She was blessed with a fabulous voice but as if that wasn't enough she works her ass off in every performance. In 1985 both she and Paul Young were appearing in the NEC within weeks of each other. I couldn't afford the journey and tickets to both concerts and I was torn but eventually opted for Paul Young and I wasn't disappointed. My best friend saw Tina. He said there was a cardboard cut out of David Bowie on stage. Well into the performance, half an hour or more, the cardboard cut out turned out to be the real Bowie who'd stood stock still the whole time until he suddenly walked across the stage and started singing with her. I wish I'd seen that one.

Can anyone imagine being the ONE AND ONLY PERSON that 150,000 people came to see and are gleefully singing the chorus at the top of their lungs. As Janis Joplin used to say that live performance was like have the best sex with 10,000 people, of course Janis would write: "One Good Man" to explain her emptiness after the concert when all the male band members would grab groupies for sexual release with strangers. Janis used to say: "Nobody knows how hard it is to be me", and how lonely she felt as a female superstar, coming off the stage. That isolation lead to Heroin Addiction and her premature death at 27. Tina was a survivor!
