Aperture was perfect great software. After Apple hat discontinued it I switched completely to C1 and work with all the time. I don't believe that Apple will try to be a competitor to Adobe again today.
@robertrakowicz9666 Yes I bought it. It actually worked well. Steve Jobs till the end tried to improve it but Tim Cook was pretty short sighted and pulled the plug. Pretty sad.
@friendofarca6550 Adobe had a big lead but there was no reason to kill it. It just wasn't big revenue maker for them and they had other priorities I suppose.
As a Lightroom user (Classic and mobile versions) I not only process photos, I also use LR for digital asset management. In other words, I have a catalog of folders and subfolders of photos with star ratings, colour labels, pick flags, tags, titles, captions, and so on. If Apple's Photos, Pixelmator, Photomator, or whatever they end up calling it, doesn't have DAM, I'm not remotely interested.
Yes photomator doesn't have a DAM so it doesn't make sense to purchase it if their intention wwasto compete with LR. The better purchase would have been Capture One.
I haven't used FCPX in a while but sad to say that's what I'm hearing. Don't think apple has the motivation to keep on improving apps (as adobe does) as it is not their core business. I hope I'm wrong.
@@takebetterphotos8132 There have been significant updates. This version has 'clean up' with better object detection. The addition of AI searching where you can search for 'bridges' even if you do not use the keyword 'bridge' in your tagging. It is still faster than anything else, and not by a small margin. When are the competitors going to 'incrementally update' to actual speed? Go through the history and see the updates for yourself, and remember that these updates are free. As far as it goes, how 'revolutionary' has LR updated in the last several years? What game changing feature have they included? The single biggest include most of us have fought over is support for my latest and greatest new camera. All updates tend to be incremental. Don't get me wrong, LR is more powerful, but Apple Photos gets a lot of hate it doesn't deserve.
@v3rlon Good points. Apple has definitely done good work on searching etc. I was specifically referring to the updates on photo editing (i.e. masking, tone adjustments etc...) On that area little has been done in the past 9 years.
My guess is that they want to have alternatives to Adobe software because there's bad blood between the companies (Apple loves to target the creative market but are too dependant on Adobe for that market, and Adobe has repeatedly neglected Apple's platforms). So I expect they'll use this acquisition to improve Photos but will also keep Pixelmator for graphics design, possibly with a new name.
That doesn't mean they'll be fully competitive with Adobe's Lightroom and Photoshop or even Illustrator. But if Apple can serve the prosumer market, that's a good chunk of their dependency on Adobe removed.
@fvsch "Photos but will also keep Pixelmator for graphics design, possibly with a new name" This is certainly possible. I suspect they will give it for free. Hope they won't rename it. Apple earns a lot from Adobe apps as it is. Not sure why there would be bad blood.
I agree that there are upgrades. The issue is the size and pace of the upgrades relative to the competition. Apple Photos editing tools have largely remained the same since 2015--9 years ago.
@@takebetterphotos8132 Apple photos is designed for the average user with some basic editing tools, it's not intended to be a full blown photo editing app. It's the same with all their non pro applications, they provide a well polished, easy to use app for free, which serves 90% of users and welcome those who need more to use a 3rd party app.
It would be absolutely criminal for Apple to dismantle and mess up Pixelmator Pro, which is such an achievement from the small Lithuanian team. Even Photomator should remain a standalone app which many people have bought the lifetime licenses of.
"Even Photomator should remain a standalone app". I agree but there was no clear indication for Apple nor Pixelmator which which tell me there is a chance it will not maintain it. It's hard to see Apple maintaining both since they practicaly do the same thing. I hope I'm wrong!
I doubt they will make a photoshop competitor out of Pixelmator. Affinity is already way better at that. I completely agree with you that this is just to enhance Photos. We can all wish for an Aperture replacement but hey, I'm still waiting for them to update Motion so it's as good as After Effects but they seem to have forgotten they own it... Ho Hum.
Apple just want's Photomator's technology to improve the photos app editing which in itself is core to iPhone. I suspect both apps will likely. be made free as an incentive to use Mac platform but don't expect big updates going forward as this is not money maker for Apple.
I loved Aperture, but when they did that I lost faith in Apple so when choosing Video software I chose Resolve, and for photos C1pro, my rule of thumb; pick companies that make the cameras/hardware as well as the software. Oh and screw Adobe! They have turned into crooks, I recently went with Affinity.
Yeah bad decision from Apple under to kill Aperture. Steve Jobs always wanted Apple to make their own software as an example to how its done no just for $$. Must be good business C1/DXO specially with Adobe's reputation.
I don't see Apple doing anything else than scrapping Pixelmator and integrating some techs into Apple Photos; in the end Adobe will win by offering continuity of service.
No they won’t. They didn’t acquire Pixelmator to kill it. They acquired it because it’s the best thing out there as a direct Adobe competitor. Hands down. The other thing that could even happen is they offer it free on every Apple device. If they could actually pull that off then watch Adobe absolutely scramble their brains when their quarterly profits plummet!!!!
@Emlt I suspect they might give Pixelmator for free as an incentive to use Mac. Adobe is pretty far in features and Apple doesn't have the skillset in photo editing. That's why they bought Pixelmator.
@rossprohaska6263 Yes I don't think Apple will kill a great product like Pixelmator but give it out for free to entice folks to use Mac. But I don't think they will try to compete with Adobe. Adobe has too far a lead and its not their core business.
I bought the life-time license to Photomator last week after removing everything Adobe from my computers only to find out that Apple had just bought them out! As the future is now not known I asked Apple for a refund which they immediately repaid! I hope that the Apple future of how they use their new team members is bright but for the time being I think I shall revisit DXO photo and upgrade my old Version 4 license to the new 8 version! The big problem I have with DXO is that they cannot work on my raw files from my scanner, so it is only a half way solution!🙁
Understandable, for folks to lose confidence given Pixelmator nor Apple gave any clarity on the future of Photomator and Pixelmator. Alternatively, you can try Capture One which may work with your scanners RAW files.
I went the other way. Gave up with DXO 7 as it wouldn't read hardly any of my files from phones, render engines etc. Only works with camera raws and not even some DNGs. Ended up with Photomator and love it. Much cheaper too! DXO are a greedy company and don't discount upgrades by much.
@ I agree with you which is why I originally chose Photomator over upgrading my old DXO 4 which has no reduction in upgrade price to version 8 but now having received a reply from photomator support on the future of Photomator and Pixelmator their reply did not make me feel safe in investing time in re-editing my files in an app that might not exist in a year or two! I suppose I could buy a year license and just hope that the photo edits from Photomator transfer easily over to what ever Apple has in mind for a possible replacement! All credit to Apple that they immediately gave me a refund on that life-time license!👍🏾
Adobe software is now so advanced that there is zero chance that apple gets even close. Pixelmator is a great prosumer app but nothing more let’s hope they do not turn it into junk as other software they have bought.
@friendofarca6550 Yes Adobe is pretty advanced and photo editing is not Apple's strong suite. If they wanted a competitor the would have bought Capture One.
@@takebetterphotos8132not sure about that. Pixel/photomator is apple only and I would expect Apple to not buy windows apps. It's a smart buy for Apple. I just hope Apple will make some budget free keep the same team or add some apple engineering to improve and keep adding functionality.
As an Aperture alumnus, I was happy to find RAW Power and then Nitro as I believe they commit to update their tools and listen to their user base.
@gm2850 So you supported Aperture all the way! But RAW Power and Nitro has just one guy doing the software
Aperture was perfect great software. After Apple hat discontinued it I switched completely to C1 and work with all the time.

I actually did mean Photomator. Photomator's photo manager doesn't really do much compared to established rivals.
Agreed

Nobody would say they messed up FCPX. It is one of the best video editors in the world and it has advanced features that Premiere does not have.
And look they just dropped version 11
@adaml.5355 Thanks for the feedback. So to be clear you are satisfied with the quantity/quality feature updates of FCPX relative to Premiere?
@@takebetterphotos8132 Premier crashes on export. I have no time for unreliable software.
