What about in video?
Wow. The real winner is Adobe Lightroom Classic. The resulting image quality from both tools was awful and the sophistication of Lightroom’s masking tools leaves both of these choices in the dust. I detest rentalware, but Adobe will continue to get its monthly pound of flesh from me.
Affinity 2.6 Had Subject selection Object selection tool Adjustment pant has hsl adjustments This is a bias review affinty 2.6 has ai tools like object selection you just not fully doing research on both sides
And the new update beta 2.6 has object selection
Affinity has Hsl tool I been using it for years 😂
Under adjustment layers
Keep them coming! THX!
Yet again.Super!
Top vid again?!
Credit is due to DXO for adding the new XD2s denoising feature to PureRaw 4, as of the current version 4.6. I am writing in November 2024. I own a copy of PureRaw 4, and had expected the new XD2s to become available with a future PureRaw 5 release. Curiously, there is no "check for software updates" option in PureRaw 4, so in order to check you are using the latest version you need to log into your DXO account and download the latest version from there.
Something that was not mentioned is the pricing. It's too high. A Photoshop + Lightroom - lightroom classic (that you can continue to use if you cancel) + 20GB of cloud storage costs 9.99 per month. With 1TB is 19.99 It's too close and clearly the Adobe tools are far better.
Good contribution, which shows that there is still much room for improvement.
Top video! Thx!
@3:07 “Apples poor record when it comes to improving their own applications” They have been improving Final Cut Pro since 2011 for FREE
I agree that there are upgrades. The issue is the size and pace of the upgrades relative to the competition. Apple Photos editing tools have largely remained the same since 2015--9 years ago.
I’ve had Pixelmator Pro for long time and loved it, as soon as Photomator allowed editing of files outside Apple’s Photos, I jumping fully in for batch editng. Happy I now have a Lifetime license for both, so if Apple trash them I can still use. Apple has bad form with Aperture and FCP 7, overnight killing them, so no I’m not happy with Apple buying them. JMO. C
Frustrating... in general I actually like On1 specifically for the way the local edits and effect stacking/masking works - the concept of having a RAW developer tool plus some ability to apply effects and some basic editing without having to resort to a full blown editor. But, as shown here - some of the tools and this AI erase in particularly aren't great. On the flipside, Luminar seems to perform better in this aspect, but I've been burned by their software before (buggy, poor performance) and I've been cautious about forking over money to them again, since...
Yes. Both have their pros and cons. I believe ON1 will be improving this drastically. Customers can't be happy about this.
Thank you, a very helpful video. Are there any clipping indicators in the photo persona?
Yes. You can check this video www.google.com/search?q=show+clipped+highlights+photo+persona+affinity&oq=show+clipped+highlights+photo+persona+affinity&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQLhhA0gEINjYyM2owajSoAgCwAgE&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:7e541911,vid:-f_5jpS3VjM,st:0
Agreed on the conclusions. Though I have current licenses for both ON1 and Neo, I wouldn't use Gen Erase in either one. As an Adobe Photography Plan subscriber, Photoshop's local-based Remove Tool is the best way to go, although I'm not testing it on faces or fingers--very tough. In the 10% of images where Remove Tool fails, PS's web-based Generative Fill usually gets it done. ON1 and Neo will get better. Adobe has a 2-year head start at this.
Yes. Hard to beat Adobe when it comes to Generative AI
From what I see Luminar is better.
Thanks for the feedback.
I never had Luminar and I think it's nothing for me. ON1 is a "toy" nothing more. Year after year, tons of new features, but none of them work as expected.
Thanks for the feedback. Would want to know who uses these.
Top notch! Well explained. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
This is such a bad news, this company has a bad record of buying good apps and then, have them discontinue, Apple Loops, wave burner, FCP Studio, Live Type, Shake, Soundtrack Pro, Final Touch (Color), Aperture, very good and needed apps for FCP, like color, soundtrack, shake package used in the movie post-production industry, I hope they don't mess this one up, apps that I pay for them in the past and they're not available today.
Well. you are doing most of that wrong. So your results are just as expected. Nope..not gonna tell ya..lol. But it was interesting to see how they work with a couple clicks.
In what way was it wrong?
@takebetterphotos8132 well. I'll give you a hint. Some of the things you wanted to do, you were using the wrong feature. To be fair. I realized later this was an old video. So maybe some of them may have been different. The Palm tree for example. That is not how you would select that.
Sorry, but both sharp tools are low quality, bad results. Smart Sharp in Photoshop is much much better.
Will have to try that
Hello, can you please explain is there a feature like profiles (e.g. fujifilm profiles) on any iPad photoeditor? It is a crucial feature I use on desktop CaptureOne and I am surprised I can’t find it on iPad photoeditors.
According to this post LR has it. www.reddit.com/r/Lightroom/comments/n59rm2/fujifilm_film_simulations_on_lr_for_ipad/
Great tutorial as always. I tried this today for the first time. I used the mock-up iPhone template and put the screen recording on it and it's about 8 minutes, but when I tried to export it it was 21GB long!!!! So I just copied and pasted the layers into a new one with smaller pixel size and it was still somewhat big, about 800mb. When I just imported the screen recording on its own and exported it, it was about 80mb. Were this layers too big?! I am perplexed!
Thanks for the feedback. 21GB is huge. How large was the recording? Perhaps try to downsize the iPhone template to video size (say 1920x1080) see if that's the cause.
I hate that companies have the same tools in two different apps, but one performs better than the other... so... you have to use both. Can't we just have ONE app, and just charge us more. Adobe is guilty of this as well.
Yes its a common issue in technology companies to create a new app as an additional revenue stream. However the new app divides attention of the developers and the company doesn't have the resources to do both well. In retrospect it would have been better to just stick with one app.
Another thing. Edited photos are stored in the pictures folder of Apple photos. As a user I cannot set a folder for this. A pro photo tool let you decide and configure where to store what.
Agree. Photomator needs a true database to make it more useful. Surprised nothing was improved this year.
@ By the way I moved over to ON1 25
No. It misses a real important function: adding keywords allowing for filtering and making selections.
Yes still a work in progress.
I loved Aperture, but when they did that I lost faith in Apple so when choosing Video software I chose Resolve, and for photos C1pro, my rule of thumb; pick companies that make the cameras/hardware as well as the software. Oh and screw Adobe! They have turned into crooks, I recently went with Affinity.
Yeah bad decision from Apple under to kill Aperture. Steve Jobs always wanted Apple to make their own software as an example to how its done no just for $$. Must be good business C1/DXO specially with Adobe's reputation.
Sticking with Pixelmator Pro!
Thanks for the feedback.
It works, but not always. And then, you have lost time.
They do have a preview so you can see first if it works before doing the full render.
@ that’s true.
About generative tools, remember they are valid till the end of 2025 in permanent license, then they will be disabled and you will be able to buy them again in Jan2026 package of generative tools. Wanted to buy the Neo, and got such feedback from customer service
Yes a good reminder that generative tools are not free.
Thanks for the video, definitely will try. One question: why don't we just use the shawdow slide?
Shadow slider produces a different effect which might be less pleasing than than exposure. You can try both and see which works best for you.
Very clearly described, well done. Worked like a charm first time
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful.
Why buy Pixelmator apps if Apple intends to neglect them?
Apple just want's Photomator's technology to improve the photos app editing which in itself is core to iPhone. I suspect both apps will likely. be made free as an incentive to use Mac platform but don't expect big updates going forward as this is not money maker for Apple.
First Affinity Photos gets gobbled up a now Pixelmator. Everyone is for sale.
As a Lightroom user (Classic and mobile versions) I not only process photos, I also use LR for digital asset management. In other words, I have a catalog of folders and subfolders of photos with star ratings, colour labels, pick flags, tags, titles, captions, and so on. If Apple's Photos, Pixelmator, Photomator, or whatever they end up calling it, doesn't have DAM, I'm not remotely interested.
Yes photomator doesn't have a DAM so it doesn't make sense to purchase it if their intention wwasto compete with LR. The better purchase would have been Capture One.
have gone up from ver.22 to this, I switched to annual subscription, saved 40% but more importantly the masking really does work and save time... other features I'm not bothered about, speed edit..pah, not needed, auto color match... not needed, but the other feature that isn't in C1-22 is shooting to card whilst tethered, v handy for me.
Yes Capture One did the right thing focusing on masking which works and now super fast. Everything else is secondary.
Great video as always! You did not touch on the use of the roll off nodes to refine the use of the HSL tool. Does this makes the HSL tool more accurate and in some cases more flexible than the replacement brush or are there other limitations that I am missing?
Hi I actually have not tried the roll off nodes. But based on my experience always try HSL as it is faster and simpler and use replacement brush only when HSL is not working.
@ thanks as always for your great videos and fast responses to questions. The roll off nodes are pretty cool, in short, to isolate a color click the eyedropper on the color to isolate, slide the saturation level to 0. This will grey out the target area and the roll off nodes will help refine the isolation. Then reset the saturation level and hue shift to the color desired. It’s especially good for fixing skin color.
@Khristopherous Thanks for the tip. Will try this out.
It would be absolutely criminal for Apple to dismantle and mess up Pixelmator Pro, which is such an achievement from the small Lithuanian team. Even Photomator should remain a standalone app which many people have bought the lifetime licenses of.
"Even Photomator should remain a standalone app". I agree but there was no clear indication for Apple nor Pixelmator which which tell me there is a chance it will not maintain it. It's hard to see Apple maintaining both since they practicaly do the same thing. I hope I'm wrong!
In Luminar, did you use the object recognition feature? In my hands, this can make a big difference.
Will look more closely into this. I used its default settings as I did for every app.
I agree capture one. I use ON1 though.
Thanks for your feedback. ON1s is still useful I think.
I hope they don’t mess it up like FCPX-with even paid, the updates are minimal and way outdated.
I haven't used FCPX in a while but sad to say that's what I'm hearing. Don't think apple has the motivation to keep on improving apps (as adobe does) as it is not their core business. I hope I'm wrong.
Nobody would say they messed up FCPX. It is one of the best video editors in the world and it has advanced features that Premiere does not have.
And look they just dropped version 11
@adaml.5355 Thanks for the feedback. So to be clear you are satisfied with the quantity/quality feature updates of FCPX relative to Premiere?
@@takebetterphotos8132 Premier crashes on export. I have no time for unreliable software.
Let’s look at this possibility just like how the iWork suite was eventually given to every Apple consumer for free. Imagine that Pixelmator becomes free. Let’s take the Apple Photos app and build into Photomator your direct storage in your iCloud with all the security features of the Apple ecosystem. Now watch as Apple either upgrades or phases out “Photos” but still uses an upgraded file system. Adobe…record quarterly earnings losses as so many people jump ship. Look towards the future people. This is completely huge because they will come up with an ability to store your photos in your iCloud and oh. Access them on any (yes any) device (Not just Apple devices)!!!
Wow that AI crop looked incredibly bad, and remove power lines didn't do such a great job either. Seems unfinished.
Thanks for you the feedback. "AI crop looked incredibly bad" compared to which app?
@takebetterphotos8132 thanks for the video. I often find your content useful. Not compared to any app just compared to the natural scene. I don’t think I would use it at that quality.
@brendxn_ that's fair. Have to do a more rigorous test on this.
Apple photos has had several updates and does have local contrast (no brushes except healing though).
Yes there are some incremental updates but very limited (compared to competitors) condering its been 9 years since launch.
@@takebetterphotos8132 There have been significant updates. This version has 'clean up' with better object detection. The addition of AI searching where you can search for 'bridges' even if you do not use the keyword 'bridge' in your tagging. It is still faster than anything else, and not by a small margin. When are the competitors going to 'incrementally update' to actual speed? Go through the history and see the updates for yourself, and remember that these updates are free. As far as it goes, how 'revolutionary' has LR updated in the last several years? What game changing feature have they included? The single biggest include most of us have fought over is support for my latest and greatest new camera. All updates tend to be incremental. Don't get me wrong, LR is more powerful, but Apple Photos gets a lot of hate it doesn't deserve.
@v3rlon Good points. Apple has definitely done good work on searching etc. I was specifically referring to the updates on photo editing (i.e. masking, tone adjustments etc...) On that area little has been done in the past 9 years.
I didn't even know about that preset! Great video!
Glad you found it useful. I discovered it late as well. The only preset I use!
I don't see Apple doing anything else than scrapping Pixelmator and integrating some techs into Apple Photos; in the end Adobe will win by offering continuity of service.
No they won’t. They didn’t acquire Pixelmator to kill it. They acquired it because it’s the best thing out there as a direct Adobe competitor. Hands down. The other thing that could even happen is they offer it free on every Apple device. If they could actually pull that off then watch Adobe absolutely scramble their brains when their quarterly profits plummet!!!!
@@rossprohaska6263 haha, pixelmator is a adobe competitor? dream on.
@Emlt I suspect they might give Pixelmator for free as an incentive to use Mac. Adobe is pretty far in features and Apple doesn't have the skillset in photo editing. That's why they bought Pixelmator.
@rossprohaska6263 Yes I don't think Apple will kill a great product like Pixelmator but give it out for free to entice folks to use Mac. But I don't think they will try to compete with Adobe. Adobe has too far a lead and its not their core business.
I prefer ON 1 as being not too pronounced!
Thanks for your feedback. A few people have said they like ON1.
Adobe software is now so advanced that there is zero chance that apple gets even close. Pixelmator is a great prosumer app but nothing more let’s hope they do not turn it into junk as other software they have bought.
You are so short sighted. Apple’s reason that they bought Pixelmator can be explained in one single word…Ecosystem.
@friendofarca6550 Yes Adobe is pretty advanced and photo editing is not Apple's strong suite. If they wanted a competitor the would have bought Capture One.
@@takebetterphotos8132not sure about that. Pixel/photomator is apple only and I would expect Apple to not buy windows apps. It's a smart buy for Apple. I just hope Apple will make some budget free keep the same team or add some apple engineering to improve and keep adding functionality.
What other software do you speak of? You have to list the examples
@audiomoritz Yes they need to keep the Pixelmator engineering team somehow. But with all that money paid can't blame them from leaving.
