Jet racing?! Wow, I guess I've been living under a rock. Incredible.
You should see the jumbo jet racing - it's even more incredible!

Man that was some superb airmanship from both pilots to bring both jets back safely. I was watching from the stands when it happened!

Thank you.
Yes, thank you!
Omg that pitch up reminded me of 2011 crash now I’m crying
That pilot did a great job of gaining altitude and bringing her in safely, nerves of steel..
Jet racing? Where has this sport been all my life? Man, I love America.

Old WWII Aircrafts modified for racing (P-51 Mustangs)
thanks, man.
Reno National Championship Air Race and Airshow is the official name of the event.
Complete with dumb comments from announcers. the broad has said at least 5 incorrect things in the first 5 minutes.
Reno Air Races.. Greatest show on Earth
Wow! I didn't know there was jet engine powered aircraft racing. Piston engine yes, but not jets. Very interesting. Obviously no real aviation racing fan wants to see any contact, but this incident certainly demonstrated the amazing flying skills involved. Glad both pilots are safe so that they may fly again. Thanks for posting. Learned something new.
Yeah, had no clue about jets racing!
Its new!
MERICA!
DH: "this incident certainly demonstrated the amazing flying skills involved."
In my book, near the top of the list of amazing flying skills you find...
- Don't fly into another aircraft.
Yuppers!
New for me too!!!:)
David Hoffman nnnn gy
My dad used to bring me to the Reno air races as a kid... Brings back some memories I had completely forgotten...thank you
I went to Reno air races acknowledging in '91 it was absolutely amazing!
Astonishing - it looked to me that not only did he lose some of his wing, but the aileron went, too. That was some flying to get it down!
What a testament to the ruggedness of the L 39. I don't too many jets could have survived this.
wow, he made it back safely. thats good piloting there
Also insanely lucky. Couple more inches of that wing and both may not have made it...
He survived that incredible. As a pilot myself that's as good as winning first place! Nice flying
Settle down, Captain Happy. We're all enjoying great VFR around here, no IMC please.
Robert Miles I think his mom grounded him, or his cat pissed on his hot pocket.
@Jeff Mattel Jealous much
Breath taking to watch 😮 glad they got down safely. Love to visit the races from the UK it's on my list. Thanks for posting, great video and some great lessons.
Damn. That pilot is fantastic. He kept control of the aircraft amazingly well!
Have been going to Reno Air Races the past 8 years. If you like aviation, it doesn’t get any better. We go Fri, Sat & Sun each year, always go to the pits. You are up-close to the, planes, pilots and crews. I highly recommend.
VIP tents are close up.
Unlimited food and drinks .
Harrah's was great!
L-39s are incredibly robust and very stable in flight. They are Soviet jet trainers and designed to put up with a lot of abuse. Still, that's a lot of leading edge damage, in addition to the loss of the wingtip and trailing edge flap. Wow. Nice landing, captain.
Their actually Czech, but the Russians DO use them for training...so I guess they are Russian jet trainers? Haha. They are pretty robust. I used to work for one of the main companies here in the US that did L-39 westernizations, repairs and upgrades. Pretty neat bird.
Yes, L-39 ALbatros are very safe and very robust jet trainers, but NO, they aren´t soviet, but are developed and manufactured at Aero Vodochody company in Czech Republic in the middle of Europe. And actually same manufacturer developed totally new generation of this succesfull jet trainer, L-39NG.
WOW! How tha' hell did I miss this one?
Glad both were OK!!
Thank God!
He lost his aileron !!! that's some flying getting that back in :-)
Yeah, sad, neither commentator realized the incredibleness of that control surface missing.
Would like to have seen the damage on the other plane as well.
Around 730 is the replay. Amazing no one was seriously hurt. Good flying.
Dang... Right wing damage, vertical stab damage, left H. Stab damage and he flew it like a boss.
Czech made training jet L-39 Albatros are very good and very safe jets ... Actually is possible to buy new generation, L-39NG, fully modern generation of training jet.
Amazing stuff. So nice to see him land safely.
I guess we've finally found the *_Old Bold Pilot_* !!! 😵
LOL! I've heard of alot of thr "old bold" ones... But never Pilots!!
LOL :)
haha nice!
Man I loved the goodyear racers of the late 40's into the 50's
I’ve watched the plane races that Red Bull puts on but those planes weren’t jet powered. I had no idea there even was such a thing as jet plane racing! Definitely going to have to look up and watch more of these!
There is a lot more damage to that plane than appears. Dam good flying.
OH Yeah! That wing comes off and gets put on the jig to make it right again. I built AC for a while. But costly for the team.
Looks like the right aileron was gone. Good think you only need one aileron to control roll. I used to do RC pylon racing. Back in '76 I was running quarter midget class racers that had just one aileron located on the left wing. I was out practicing one day and after a flight this guy comes over to look at my plane. After a minute he says "you've only got one aileron". I say "yeah, so?". He says "so how do you turn right"? I replied "it's a pylon racer. It only needs to turn left". ;-)
Incredible how the pilot immediately started gaining as much altitude as possible after the contact in order to sort of assess his control issues and prep for landing.
Yep. Every Reno pilot has to go through a "Pylon School" before being allowed to race. If the pilots have any problem what so ever, the procedure is to come off high and right to put distance between the other aircraft and give altitude for problem solving.
Everyone at Reno are safety fanatics and many of them literally wrote the book. Anyone who isn't safe doesn't race.
@@euchreairgaming no hi g
Incredible footage. The announcers are great, particularly the lady. God was with those pilots that day. Great flying by everyone.
The female announcer was totally ignorant of this sport.
@@itgoestoeleven where did you pick this up?
Skill and luck, no god involved.
@R Diaz How come god is never blamed for causing the accident in the first place, but always gets credit for a good outcome?
WOW that could have easily ended badly for both pilots and planes. Glad everyone was alright. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
Inacreditável!!! No fio da navalha.
Wow! Good flying! Thankful for the outcome. Of note, who knew racing jets were more durable than an F1 car? F1 cars touch like that in a race and it blows apart.
That's Because race cars (F1 and Indycar) are designed to crash, Airplanes are not. Race cars are designed to "blow apart" or disintegrate in a crash. Why? Because race cars (unlike airplanes) tumble on the ground. With every "hit" goes every piece of the car, and each piece carries away kinetic energy.... that's being dissipated away from the driver. Its called crash survivalability.
F1 is the worst motorsport. I would rather watch pedal-car races. Or jets.
Haha.. completely AGREE!! I hate F1 too!
I dislike any sport that is so much about the MONEY, and whose competitors are such egotistical prima donnas.
F1 cars don't fall out of the sky when they come apart.
Taps in auto races, contacts in aviation. The "rear wing" is the horizontal stabilizer.
I never knew this was a sport, but now i want to spectate. This would be amazing with military jets +mach. Or virtual dogfights would be an amazing sport as well.
Glad professionals were filming and caught it all; I would have like to see the other aircraft land. I saw preliminary still pics from the day it happened from a pilot friend: no RH aileron and it looks like that is what caused the stab and LH horz stab damage.
Good bit of pilotage. Lot's of instinct to immediately pull up to get altitude and bleed airspeed to get the plane as clean as possible to set up for landing...a great job!
You're right. You can see him level the wings immediately (it's probably pilot input and NOT an aerodynamic result of the impact.)
However, he pulled up SO FAST, they almost had a huge midair!
I know the plane in back had more energy and was passing... AND the camera angles are deceiving, but I don't know what was more of a "close call": the initial impact and losing your wingtip, or the immediate pull-up!
(I know the first thing to do is go wings level. And at the races, you pull up and out of the race circuit, but it seemed a BIT too fast... 🫣🤔)
But anyways, any landing you walk away from, right?? ✌️👍
@@endokrin7897 I thought he was pulling up so that he had more room in the event of an eject.
Dammit RUclips random channel recommendation! Now racing will never be the same.
this has been around LONG before nascar or formula 1 has ever existed.. Reno Air Races began in 1964, which was apart of a much larger circuit of dozens of different races annually in the US.
When formula one is not expensive enough.
If they had F1 budgets, the teams would be flying multiple F-22's.
You can get a used L-39 jet for 200k. Even if it cost you 3x that to outfit it for racing and modern upgrades it'd still be less than F1. Crazy!
@Bobby Y Yeah, I'd take watching 3000+ hp planes flying 450+ mph, 50 feet off the deck, anyday over a bunch of dudes in bicycle shorts fighting on who gets to wear a yellow shirt.
@Bobby Y If it wasn't for Brits & Yanks etc., you'd be speaking German!
@Bobby Y Stupid frogs love surrendering
Wow! Better outcome than expected.
I've never seen anything like this. Never knew they did this. Didn't think there'd be enough room for something like this. Amazing and expensive sport.
I LOVE THOSE AIR RACES. SOMETIMES YOU SEE SOME NICE DEADLY CRASHES. AMAZING.
Now this is podracing
I was thinking that too.
They were 2 feet from total disaster, great reaction time saved the day.
I was visiting a friend in Reno one year and we wheeled up one of those mountains to watch the race from there
Very intense moments I'm glad everybody was okay
Nice flying on half a wing! Well done!
Only in America would people race jets! I am yet again amazed , but not surprised. :) .
pixelspring yep if it rolls floats or flys we will race it 😎
"Rubbing is racing!"
I know the pilot, Alex Eckman. He's a friend and a customer of the company I work for. He is a great pilot (obviously). He'll be back at reno this year with a different jet (L-39MS).
Tell him I'm glad he's okay and then ask him if he is CRAZY?
Reno, baby!
No idea jet teaching existed. This is awesome
That damage was a lot more significant than it seemed to start with !! great outcome thankfully !
Correct, that wasn't his wing tip missing, but about 30" of his wing was gone, and alieron gone as well. He's lucky, but he's not a novice.

Damn, glad no one was hurt and I really need to get out more, I didn't know they race planes, LOL! I knew about airshows and the different games done in the US and internationally with the military. Pretty cool, but I wonder if it's one of those odd sports that watching it on tv is better then watching it live because you can actually see everything! Then again the sights and sounds are a big part of the experience, and your tv can't give you that part of the experience.
Much of the show is in the pits where you can see the planes up close and the crew working on the engines.
Indeed it is. Lived in Reno for 7 years and went every year. I came back to Michigan the year the tragedy happened that killed numerous people. After that incident they moved the race farther away from the grandstands
Oh yeah, make sure to come to the races at least once! Reno even during this event has plenty of rooms and parking at the event. The pit pass is worth it too. Thay you can walk through and get up close to all the aircraft, it's the best air show you will ever see.
Take a look at Red Bull racing as well as the Reno air races.
🐊🐄🐂🐃ing wanker.
About time ! Jet race
Imagine showing this to someone from 150 years ago. They would be shitting bricks.
Well, I was watching Reno Air Races 50 years ago and there were no jets then! I think 50 years from now, it will probably be all drones! A GA pilot, I never had any desire to race, maybe because I saw a few crashes at Reno.
Very profesional recovery of this difficult situation. It shows quality of Czech made training jet L-39 Albatros too. Is able to land safely only with part of one wing and save pilot and rest of aircraft.
Farmers Insurance: "We covered that!"...
...yep, under classic Russian kitmobile...
Wow that was a very close call.
Great pilot👍🏻
We were sadly just reminded in Sept 2022 that when things go bad it happens quick, and doesn't always have such a good outcome.
Race 37 sustained damage to the rudder root too, visible during the roll-out at 9:50.
Thanks for pointing that out for everyone who didn't bother to watch to 11:13. And that's the tail, not the rudder.
@@stargazer7644 Technically it's the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer, and there is also damage to the left horizontal stabilizer leading edge as well. Damn lucky the elevator wasn't damage. I'd take a large amount loss of yaw control anyday, over even a minuscule amount of loss of pitch control.
Crazy!
Male commentator is clueless "the tail wing"..... lady knows her stuff though
Tail wing, lol. Be nice if actual pilots narrated this stuff.
I really like what she said about Nascar and Indy not being as fast as these aircraft.
No they both talk shit. I was at a tractor pulling event awhile ago and there was an aerobatic demonstration.
I have an aviation background and the tractor pulling commentator had done his research, named individual maneuvers, aircraft type, engine, speeds, technique and pulled off the commentary better than these utter hacks ever could. In addition he mentioned the pilot's history, air force squadron number, year joined, his instructor, his service history how many children he has.
These dopes don't even know what an aileron is - it's embarrassing listening to this. All I can say is they'd make terrible cleaners because I'm sure they wouldn't know where or how to start. They should just join the unemployment queue.
I'd rate this commentary 0/10.
@@casualguy3938 Yeah it's too ridiculous to say anything else really.
Now THIS is Podracing!
Aw, it's nuthin' That'll buff out.
oh, wow. that is nuts.
#13 bought the beer that night😮
My ass puckered so hard watching this it made a creaking sound. I can't believe he didn't lose the whole tail.
Seriously. One lucky son of a bitch. That plane couldnt have taken much more damage and still been operable.
What a time to be alive.
Hopefully the races take place this year 🤷🏻♂️
Nicely done sir
Jet racing!? Why didn't I know about this sport lol.. this is amazing.. what type of jets are they flying
Just incredible thhey both didnt buy the farm, wow is about the best I can come up with at the moment.
Exceptional piloting skills. The guy had lost one is wrong damaged elevator and rudder but still managed to learn and it's off to him.
The horizontal stabilizer and the tail are damaged. The elevator and rudder are fine. He did lose an aileron however.
Very profesional recovery of this difficult situation. It shows quality
of Czech made training jet L-39 Albatros too. Is able to land safely
only with part of one wing and save pilot and rest of aircraft.
Just Wow, so glad they both landed safely, Do those type of jets have ejection seats?
Yes
In my opinion in this sport, if you land safely and are unharmed, you win. I'm perfectly fine with everyone winning that game.
Wow, glad he is ok! Scary stuff.
With how sharply he pulled up after impact, it looks like there was a risk of a more serious outcome, but of course as the earlier footage showed, spacing is hard to read from these angle and with these camera lenses.
You guys are amazing..I don't know what else to say. I prefer seeing jets flying in a show rather than in a war this is clear. But "jet races"?!...only in Reno! Only in USA you can see something like this.
BNL style..
Would love to see on board
Was there when it happened but couldn't tell what happened until I saw this video. I saw the short landing though. He must have been shaken.
How was the other plane?
So if they are running low on fuel, do they have mid-air refueling? You know, for like a "pit-stop" :)
do these kind of airplanes have an eject-seat system, in case things get worse than they did here?
Awesome.....these pilots got big brass....
Didnt mean to rip his wingtip off. Omly meant to rattle his cage
How would they be able to tell if they are within the course? A jet could easily fly inside or outside the defined path.
Pure Airmanship.
E o 737 do vôo, GOL 1907, não teve tal sorte...
Anyone know where to get a used right wing? Just asking.
Very good handling and piloting skills. Sad it’s structural damage to a beautiful aircraft. But ….. relatively easy fix. Glad everyone is fine and live to race again !
They got bumpers on them bad boys?
@11.15 What's a "tail wing" ?
Just wondering what the announcers Credibility on racing or flying fighters or flying in general?
That is insane
do these planes have ejection seats?
Sorry, I found it Czech L39.
what kinda jets are these? are they the same or different kind?
@R Diaz thanks for the reply.
So glad he made it bake on the ground safely.
Good morning from SE Louisiana 5 Aug 21.
Are these raced still held out in Red Rock, up 395?
Yes, they're at the Reno-Stead airport north of Reno.
