  • Back in the late 1980s Agnostic Front fans were a bit steamed at Metallica for copying the New York Hardcore band's 1987 album title Liberty And Justice For... with their album ...And Justice For All, released in 1988, but vocalist Roger Miret talked his meeting Kirk Hammett in '87 and how he feels about the fans controversy.

    roger's changed his tune on metallica. here he says he always liked their lyrics. you can google an interview, though, that he did on tour with the disasters, al from dropkick murphys was with him for the interview, like in '03, he says he never liked metallica or slayer, doesn't care what they have to say, b/c he isn't interested in lyrics about death. i like roger and af better than those other bands (who i also like) but just thought the change in tune was interesting.

      cop dude Roger Miret must have been almost 40 when he gave the interview OP mentioned so I doubt age or maturity had anything to do with it. My opinion is that and justice for all is a phrase that Americans have always been familiar with. Metallica may have got the idea for the name from AF or they may have independently thought of it. Besides, the 2 albums are very different in all aspects. Musically they arent the same and lyrically are very different.

    As an isolated incident it is pretty much a non-issue, and Roger says so himself, but the members of Metallica borrowed heavily from the Hardcore Punk underground. They would stalk the shows of Punk bands and invite themselves backstage to talk to the band members. Other than wearing Misfits shirts and covering some Punk songs I never read anything where they credit the Hardcore Punk underground for half their brand.

      Long hairs are such unoriginal, plagiarist, posers. This is why I never liked much heavy metal. I always liked punk and hardcore, it's genuine, real, from the heart, you can feel the raw emotion in the music.

    • @ChargerBullet
      @ChargerBullet 4 года назад +6

      @Joe Sudz Metallica and the rest of the Heavy Metal bands (like Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, etc.) stole from the Hardcore Punk underground without giving credit. They got away with it because Hardcore was underground and the Metal bands were signing to corporate major labels and appearing on MTV.

      @@ChargerBullet No, not at all: you said "Metallica and the rest of the Heavy Metal bands (like Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, etc.) stole from the Hardcore Punk underground without giving credit", which is absolute bυllshιτ; and they actually played a more agressive kind of music, fairly distinctive from Hardcore... how is this even an issue? two bands both got inspiration for an album title from the pledge of allegiance. that doesn't mean metallica copied agnostic front

      @Crooklyn-hx3eo 5 лет назад

      Good point. I think it just "seems" suspicious because of the timing. But back then it was like the wild west regarding copyright infringement. Bands could sample each others records at their leisure without penalties.

    ...And Justice For All was probably the peak of the Hetfield/Ulrich dominion in Metallica´s creative process; i strongly doubt that they would ultimately let Hammett chose the title of the record. the similarity ist just a coincidence I guess

    The funny thing is Metallica is known for ripping off from hardcore bands. I love Metallica but gotta point that out 😂
    The Four Horseman was a rip off from Agression’s - Salty leather. Enter sandman was a rip off from Excels - tapping into the emotional void & many more !

      @LetsGoMetsGo33 3 года назад

      Its part of the “Pledge of Allegiance”, which is cited by school kids every morning. AF had the crowd recite it on their 1989 “Live at CBGB”album. Here are the words:
      I pledge allegiance
      To the flag
      Of the United States of America
      And to the Republic
      For which it stands
      One nation
      Under God
      Indivisible
      With Liberty
      And justice
      For all.

      @@menschmaschine-2483 They may have been influenced by the AF album. They both reference the same section of the pledge, both have an ellipses (...), and Metallica were followers of hardcore.
