I've really been enjoying reading all your comments about engine layouts. For the record although I worked in automotive I never worked in engine departments, mostly in body shops and painting facilities.
1:10 1-3-2-4 pattern would fire against itself; firing cyl3 then cyl2 would be like if you fired cyl2 twice 180 degrees apart. The pattern usually goes 1-3-4-2 or 1-2-4-3, because you want it to fire every 180 degrees. I understand that you probably just misspoke, but that might confuse a lot of people.
I believe the firing order is in the sequence from 1 to the highest number, but it doesnt fire programatically; It will wait until the piston is at TDC, then fire, then wait until the next is at TDC, etc... From what I've observed, it will still always start the cycle back at 1 every 720 degrees. It might be programmed slightly differently from how I explained it, however in terms of the engine simply running, then yeah, the game doesn't care at all about the timing. But setting it up properly sure will help to make sure that two pistons on your I4 never fire at the same time.
He has lots of things wrong Fan is pushing air forward (just visuals) Starter is not normally connected by pulleys it is supposed to engage with flywheel, that was clutch on it, but here he added clutch gear for starter that also can disengage? That's like clutch for clutch, makes no sense And then he adds another clutch on other side too?
Starter and clutch gear should be on the back of the engine IE your output, then pulley and fans go on the front of the engine, there is no clutch between your flywheel and output so the engine would stall, and your fan is on a clutch so will disconnect when you press the key
Passing your starter through a belt is something I've not seen before. What is usually done is a starter with a moving tiny gear like you have, that meshes into the flywheel (they have teeth on the outside). The flywheel has so many teeth, it essentially doesn't wear out, at least I've never heard its teeth wearing out before the clutch surface did. The starter motor has to spin superfast to spin up the engine, but they dont care. It is a wear item too. Because it should be easier to replace than the flywheel, but big car companies dont always care Anyways nice going
If you look at the bottom right corner while targeting parts there's 3 symbols, if the [+-] is lit up it's a resizable part, a checkered circle means you can select material and the colour gradient means you can paint it. Haven't considered mounting the starter like that before with an idler gear, usually I keep it to a more real-life location, but it does fit nicely on the side of the cylinder
Oh man I can't wait to see you make weird engines - I'm exited to see what's possible. Radials, X-, H-, W- engines and stuff. Also with angles weird stuff like an Inline 9 could work-ish
9:34 your clutch and ring gear should be in the rear with your starter, the alternator and ac pump are on the front with a belt and the ac has a clutch. Either you got weird engines in all your cars or you haven't looked at them.
Irl, the flywheel on the back of the engine has gear teeth on it. These mesh with the starter motor's teeth. You also don't need a clutch for the starter since it's gear pops out to mesh and then pops back in once the engine is running.
If the starter pops in and out you dont need the clutch since the starter retracting is what keeps it from meshing while the motor is already running, then you can use a normal gear to run your alternator
The build you were driving at the start is probably the devs take on the Morgan Three Wheeler, just with an electric motor instead of the V Twin in the front (and slightly different fittings and stuff)
I kinda wish there was more different displacement cylinders because at the moment there's only 0.7L and 2L cylinders, Would love to have 0.5L cylinders and smaller, a cylinder that allows you to change it's displacement in the UI would be nice.
i have never seen a starter starting the car over a belt. there might have been ideas about it but i havent seen anything like that so far. starters engage with the flywheel on the output side of the engine not with a belt on the other side
Yep that would be pretty sick. then the firing order should be 1-4-3-2. 1 being back right, 4 being front left, 3 being back left, and 2 would be front right. Is this a mod or in the game default?
If you look up a flywheel on a real motor you’ll find it has gearing along the perimeter, the reason for that is because the starter engages with the flywheel to start the motor. It’s not apart of the accessory system on the front of the motor. Following the path of the crank out the back it’s flywheel, clutch, transmission, driveshaft, differential, axles, wheels.
Not sure what he means by GYRO at 4:14 But DYNO can be made easily by making a clutch that connects to frame, setting it's torque to max and playing around with RPMs that it starts engaging at This is called "prony brake" and you adjust brake/load till engine is at RPM you want, then you read TORQUE it creates at given RPM Multiply and you have power
the generic inline four engine's 1st and 4th pistons move together while the 2nd and 3rd move together. The firing order is 1st piston,3rd piston,4th piston and 2nd piston. It should be impossible for the 2nd and 3rd pistons to fire after each other as one is in combustion while the other should now be finishing the exhaust stroke
I'm sure you can make a V8 Radial engine with a cylinder every 45* but no idea how the intake and exhaust would fit. will probably have to take a look at some WW1 plane engine designs. I've seen them with 8 on one crank, and I've seen them with 4 or 6 on 2 cranks. Probably going to have to grab the game myself and see what I can do.

Engine size is in fact calculated by all cylinders combined. A 4 liter BMW V8 would definitely not by 4 liters per cylinder, nor the 1 liter 3 cyl Ecoboost be 1 per cylinder
