This may seem obvious or useless but it’s actually excellent advice. I almost gave the game up because I kept hitting 50 yard hooks into the ground. Turned out I was taking the club back way inside on the backswing. Took lessons and this was the main teaching point.
Yep. Purposely taking the club back vertical and steep has been the best thing for my slice. It’s so much easier to shallow a club if my backswing is the opposite. The second I have a shallow backswing I’m guaranteed to come over the top on the way down
Exactly the same experience. Coach sorted me out after a few lessons. I'd honestly believed I was on plane till he showed me the footage.
@@str3tchr nothing wrong with coming over the top ..it's a fallacy it's a swing fault..unless you are going to say Bobby Jones didn't know how to swing a club ? Or Byron Nelson, or Sam Snead, or Arnold Palmer, or George Knudson, or Bernhard Langer..
100%
@@PirateRemy I’m glad it works for you. It did not work for me, and this minor changed helped me enjoy the game more. Good luck out there!
Hey Taylormade, we need more stuff like this 👍🏼
That one hit he showed us is likely better than the thousands I’ve attempted over the years. Makes it look so simple and effortless. Love watching him play.
They can have quick episodes like this of him tying his shoes and I'm gonna watch and so will you.
Facts.
This is a fabulous tip. Thank you Rory McIlroy and Taylor Made.
“You just swing” and carry it 282 yards 😂
for real lol
Fading too :(
It was a mishit too.
Awkward word to read

He didn't use his 4 iron there
So good…Simple and quick (not easy) to apply! Thank you!
This is especially good for long irons as well. Eliminates those odd angles that tend to get created.
Omg. This really is a good thought. I try to see the club always in my peripheral and if I lose it then I know it’s gonna be a bad swing. Same thought for my putting bc if I lose the hole in peripheral then I know I’m gonna make two putts.
For my golf swing I’m looking at the ball with my right eye and seeing the club in my left peripheral as it comes back to ascend for the down swing.
In my putt I’m looking at the hole in my left eye and looking at my club in my right. This probably makes no sense 😂. It’s just how I see it. You have to see it as works best for you.
Love this. I've been watching Porzak Golf lately because they explained the "club in front" in a way that made something click for me. Specifically, the results of doing the 10 and 10 drill at the range. Good stuff.
What is the 10 and 10 drill?
@@hennedeclan search "10 and 10" drill from the Porzak Golf channel. Basically for me, it gave me a feel to stop coming from the inside. I hit into a net all winter and increased my speed a lot but on the course those were big hooks. 10 and 10 drill put me back on plane and hitting dead straight to slight fade. Real nice, give it a shot.
This was extremely helpful advice
You are absolutely right. Golf Magazine did an extensive series on this very thing about5 1998. They used computer analysis of touring pros and very good sketch artists to illustrate right and wrong. If you study Nicklaus, he was extremely vocal about it too all of his life. For most amateurs however, it is not as easy as one might think.. They "snatch" with their hands, arms, and shoulders by habit. Hal Sutton has also been very vocal about this too. He stated that he only played as well as his ability to do this at any given time.
I like it. Thanks Rory!
I found that this forces you to coil your body more correctly as well. Thanks for the tip.
That is fantastic advice Rory.
Has helped me so much !
If things get off track on the take away then it’s really hard to get things back in form. This is very simple but valued advice. People make golf so complex but the best in the world simplify the game with things like this.
Words are simple. The actual action and movement of the swing is much different. Only going to go so deep in a 2 minute clip. Hitting hundreds of thousands of balls and a deep understanding of what is going on in that golf swing is what makes him a player. That segment was just the tip of the iceberg as far as figuring out how to hit a golfball
As a beginner, this is the only advice that basically works for me. My swing is 10x better after just this, I feel more upright and in control.
Just got home from my first lesson in 6 years, I open YT, I find this video on the front page, and guess what the coach had me working on. 🤣 So there was actually 3 things... slightly weaken my grip, keep the club in front on the way back, and point the butt end of the stick at the ball or slightly inside. He turned an occasional hook into a beautiful fade. Now I just need to groove it!
So your phone was listening to your lesson secretly and suggested this video 😅
what a fantastic player you are really awesome Rory👌👍👍
Looks simple. Thanks
Awesome Rors!
A top ten thought when swinging a golf club!
Great tip
Excellent advice which fix my over 20 year body turn and club inside issue , had struggle is the club front body is correct or not and loss power , Rory advice give the confidence the front is right though , I start practice right away with very good solid shot , thx lots 👍😆
Much more to it. You could easily be hitting slices if you take the club to the outside. Weak cuts and slices are better than hooks but they arent fun to hit. This is just a quick tip so he can only get so deep. Much more going on than just not taking that club inside. When you take it outside you have a tendency to cut it just like he did. Greatest player ever Jack Nicklaus took it a lil outside a hit high, powerful fades that landed soft. Nicklaus was a great long iron player. A lot of other stuff going on in those swings besides the takeaway that made them work.
I'm just getting into golf and initially thought Ben Hogan was one who had a "textbook swing" but after hearing Rory's advice here and noticing what other pros do it seems Hogan does exactly what Rory says not to do - am I correct here? I think trying to mimick Hogan's swing is why I'm so close to the heel of the club at impact. Going to try this out at the range next time and see how it makes a difference!
This is exactly what I am working on right now. Nice to see one of the best golfers in the world also has to deal with it too.
Thanks Rors!
Love it, I have the same issue, I think of feeling like I’m swinging steep as a way to hopefully keep the club in front of me.
You have the same issue as Rory. Stop the madness.
I try and swing steep and over the top and it has fixed my swing. I dont get it
Every time I think of this aspect when on the range or the course, I hit pure shots.
I'm really happy because this video is also advice from McIlroy, who I respect.
If possible, I would like you to tell me about turning back rather than takeback.
I'm sorry to say that the Japanese are cheeky.
The best advice I ever got is in the beginning of your backswing with a driver imagine keeping the head of the club as low to the ground as possible and as far back as possible
Thanks Rory 🏌🏻♂️
wow that's actually really useful for me
Thank you.
Tks!!!
Dude is so awesome
Been thinking this same thing for years...unfortunately it hasn't worked quite so well for me, as it has for Rory. But I'll keep trying.
Congratulations on your 21 tour win. Great simple advice.
You think he reads the comments? 😂😂😂😂😂
@@Eat-MyGoalWhy would you troll a post from over a year ago? My nephew, Jeff Rhodes played and won with Rory at the Pebble Beach ProAm this year and is a business associate of his.
Would this be appropriate for all clubs down to sand wedge? I assume yes but asking for a friend...
Really handy reminder. Guilty of pulling it back too quickly.
Thank...Rory....
The reason why this is important is because it helps u from moving your left arm too farm across your body and maintain the same angle of your arms to body. it helps ensure you aren't pulling your arms too far across your body.
Looks pretty simple when Rory does it.
Rors about to turn me into a beast lets go
Place a ruler couple inches behind the ball at he the driving range. Practise your club take away in line with the ruler. This prevents you going shallow or take the club to quickly inwards.
This is good! Width has being preached so much but it should come from the shoulder turn, not the arms.
Yeah and most hacks when they try this dont pay any attention to anything but moving their arms into that position. Rory had about a minute to give a entry level tip.
My shot shape exactly if that was a fade. Now x 10 to a slice and you have ME🤣🤣
Machine
My favorite swing thought would be to paint that red line in the sky; but it is always a splash of paint into the bushes.
One thing I've learned is that when you learn the minutiae and the "whys" of physics you can say stuff like this and it makes sense 😁
Number 1 driver on tour
Not really. He is top 3 in distance but accuracy 105. Total diving stat has him at about 10
I thought he would say 'that big check I get for playing Taylormade' :-)
TaylorMade. I am open to a full club fitting. Ready when you are.
rory
Rory in my opinion is the most talented player on the p.g.a. tour
Pushed it
The backswing is so over looked and the problem with most people’s golf swings. It was my number 1 issue and fixing it mostly solved my driver woes.
This was my issue as well. I was so obsessed with "not swinging over the top" that I was taking the club back way inside to try and shallow my path. I was getting stuck and hitting weak pushes and slices to the point of almost wanting to quit. Started keeping the club in front of me and almost thinking like I am swinging way over the top and now im hitting straight as an arrow. weird.
“Clear the front side too after you keep arms in front.” _Roary
I wish I could "Just swing" without my mates falling over laughing 3/10 shots :')
Keep that lead arm wide while keeping the trail elbow narrow.
“And from there you just swing” 😭
i miss high draw rory
That was easy, went from 101 down to even par!
Just like my Swing. Less is more!
Rory makes it look so easy......I wish it was that damn easy for us amateurs 😅🤣
Huh? I can easily slice it like he did on this video
@@PirateRemy Huh.... if Rory hit a slice it would've landed in the trees not on the green . If you can easily hit like Rory you should be on the tour too 🤣😂
@@nolimitsgolf I'm sure I would be
Looks like a slice to me and I'm experienced in how to recognise one
@@PirateRemy looks like a fade to me, and I’m definitely well trained in the art of the slice
@@thetowndrunk988 a 15 yard fade ..yeh whatever
Rory: "Just swing" - 282 yard carry
Me: "Just swing" - skulls a 50 yard shot 2 inches off the ground
Rory needs a G425 to stop that slice ;-)
In other words we should not swing like Bobby Jones, the legend.
👍
easier said than done.
sliced it but bag secured
That was short for rory
It was 176 ball speed which is normal
For him. he hit a bit of a fade so maybe lost a few yards there and Probably slightly into a breeze as well.
He’s not even trying tbh
Oh yeah, also you need 120 mph club head speed
That's all there is to it? Why didn't someone tell me this years ago?! I'd be carrying my drive 285 too... 😆
Rory, you're a younger version of Gary Player. Honest & thoughtful. Cut back on the weights so you can feel the club head again like you did first on tour. You need 6 more majors & there are too many excuses allowed to get in your way. Lastly, your putter head needs to finish 1.5 cm off the ground as it finishes too high & causes too many compensations on your aim. Need 7 more majors !!!!!!!!!
Rory has not evolved into the player people thought. He won 4 majors quick but hasnt done anything(win majors) in 8 years. At 33 years old the next 3-4 years will define his career. I like the points you make. Anxious to see how that powerful (violent) swing that he has holds up from injury. The swings from players whose bodies are lose or less muscular create a motion that flows. Like Tiger, Rory is muscular and i think that has made the swing a little tense and violent. Smasher of the golf ball is never better than swinger of the club. Just wondering if his body breaks down like Tiger.
Here's my swing thought: "Don't slice it, don't slice it, don't slice it... DOH!"
nice slice, Rory! JK, your swing's perdy good.
I don’t think he meant to cut it that much…. I get the concept, but this doesn’t apply to everyone. I see this as a way to maintain connection (how the smaller muscles relate to the larger muscles) in the golf swing. This idea has the components of a two plane swing, yet Rory is considered as one plane as they come.
The exact thing he preaches promotes a cut. If you take it away on the inside and everything else is correct it promotes a hook and if you take it outside you cut the ball. Having the club in front of you is actually being outside. That promotrs left to right ball flight.
The opposite of what Rory did when he was winning majors in 2011-2015. He used to have a great classic swing, taking it slightly inside on the way back then over the top of the back swing plane on the downswing, but straight down the target line. He hit the ball straighter then.
He definitely was more inside back then, but I disagree that he was straighter and on the timeline. Two factors in the earlier 2010's that were important; a far more in to out delivery hitting bigger, swoopier draws and a generally higher spinning club/ball combo that allowed him to do this. The fade wasn't really a part of his arsenal back then, and if you look back to 2014-2015 swings, they have WAY more in common with how he swings it now than he did in 2010-2011. The more inside takeaway of 2011 had neutralized by 2014 and that is when he was able to play fades and was arguably at his peak.
Totally agree ..many of the great masters of the game had an inside over the top swing ...the list is almost endless ..Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer ..Craig Stadler, to name a few and all major winners..
@@PirateRemy Okay now name a guy who isn't dead, or has been in the game for the last 20 years....
You can bring the club a little inside but still have it out in front of you... What he's talking about as far as getting the club behind you is using too much wrist and forearm rotation on the backswing which causes the clubface to become open. And its also something 90% of recreational golfers do.
@@LedZeppelinxBROx it doesn't really matter what you do as long as the ball ends up where you want it. Perfect swings don't exist..there's is no such thing. No golf teacher ever won a major.
I did not understand this. The club always ends up behind him.
Not sure I get the comment of “keep the club in front of you”
Picture the path your hands take on the backswing. keeping the club in front of you means the head of the club is at or above the path of your hands. having the club behind you means you wrap the club underneath the arc your hands take on the way back
This is why this video is shit. But he’s talking about the club head moving through space. “In front” in this setting is (facing down the line for a right handed golfer) keeping the club head on the right side of your hands as you take the club back to shaft parallel. The club head eventually passes just above your hands as you move past shaft parallel and complete the rest of your back swing. It’s a VERY complicated conversation to have without being able to ask questions to someone in person.
Think of Matt Wolf. His backswing is an insane exaggeration of what Rory is…trying… to explain
Seems like this would lead to a massive outside in swing....
What he meant to say is if u want to hit a power slice, do this.
When I do that I slice it off the course
Hi
My favorite swing thought is to remember to take a swig from my flask before I let er rip
......and from there you JUST swing ;-)
"MONEY"
Doesn't really matter how you get the clubhead to the top of the backswing. The key thing is to master your move down and through the ball so that, whatever it is, you're getting the desired angle of attack, shot-line, face-angle and contact-location on the face. Because that is when all the magic happens.
Great tip but I'm pretty sure he didn't intend to hit a cut! 🤣
....that's not a cut, that's a high, weak fade...but at least you're in the ballpark...
That weak cut is the tendency if you take the club outside the line going back. Misses are often to the right. Very playable if you can depend on that miss.

Step 1: Be Rory Mcilroy
Casually knocks a 300 yard shot down the fairway
Imagine how long he would be if he had a really long wingspan
There's no way he didn't bring the club back behind him during that swing. I saw it. Don't lie to me
He kept it in front like he said!!
@@Helpmeasinner nope
From there you just swing :') If only....
I've been doing it wrong all this time...
I'm not understanding this advice. I've always heard the club head should lag behind your body.
Now you just need to explain what keep the club in front of you means
