This seems like a really nice spec bump for the MBP, and I’m happy to see they FINALLY bumped the base RAM to 16GB on both the MBP and the MacBook Air. That has been years overdue. I think this will be the year we upgrade my wife’s 2019 Intel MBP for photo editing. The faster processor, better battery life, and better screen will definitely be appreciated.
I preordered the M4M MacBook 14in, even though it's my first Mac laptop and totally overkill for just writing, surfing the web, and watching movies. But hey, I want it.
I legitimately implore you to reconsider and get an M4 or M4 Pro at most. The M4 Max chips have much much worse battery life than the base and Pro chip.
And everything you listed is impacted by single core performance which is exactly the same between all of the laptops. The only reason to get a Max chip is if you run fluid dynamics simulations in a research lab or you want to play Cyberpunk at ultra settings
It worth waiting. I was going to buy M3 pro version this year, somehow I thought just wait to see how M4 line up is . Definitely gonna buy M4 pro 14 version. Pretty good deal with24gb ram!
Good for you!!! I was also waiting for the upgraded iMacs for the longest time - I have been using an Intel that will only go as far as MacOS Catalina 😕 but sometimes in March the LED gave out😢 I had to buy the M3 iMac as a replacement pronto. Pity it couldn't last long enough for me to get my hands on the M4... I would have opted for the mini with the new Asus ProArt 27" 5K monitor. 😢 Oh well, I'm sure my spec'd up M3 will see several years action , if I don't get "new tech envy" get in the way. 😅
I just ordered mine. Decided to go for the standard screen one. I just don’t work outdoors or in public spaces that often. Not worth the price at least for me!
These reviews are SOOOOOOOOO much better an easier to listen to and more concise than other bloggers and I'm on 42 seconds in. If I hear..... "So thennnnn guysssss......." and "what's inside of it" in Matt talks in that Mickey Mouse voice one more time :D Nice job Tech Chap! :)
Macbook Pro is as ever the killer device and in Australia $400 cheaper than I paid for my M1 Pro in 2021 - and cheaper than equivalent windows devices - who would have thought.
Apple is not resting on its laurels. The competition has intensified, and Apple is responding accordingly. In the UK, prices have been lowered, making Macs more competitive than many of the new Intel machines. Additionally, they are far ahead of the Snapdragon X Elite, which makes that product nearly irrelevant.
My issue with the Magic Mouse isn't so much the dumb charging solution (it's very annoying), but it's more the fact that macOS only lets you know it's almost flat when it drops to 2%! Which, if you're right in the middle of working and you CAN'T just stop for 5 minutes and get a drink, means you're pretty much playing chicken with the battery and praying it'll last a little longer.
The M4 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch is the better value. Better Thunderbolt ports, better CPU, and better iGPU with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. It may seem expensive at $2,200 USD, but it is worth it for professional engineers/developers/creators. Especially if you are currently using the M1 MacBook Pro or earlier non-M chip MacBooks. No need to change if someone has the M2/M3 Pro MacBook Pro and the M2/M3 Max. The lower tier M4 MacBook Pro is better for those transitioning from Windows or dealing with financial issues currently.
@@Jeorgy92 If your workload is light, I wouldn't even look at a new M4 Pro Macbook. You can do light work with the M3 Air or a refurbished M2 Macbook Pro 14-inch.
Ordered the 16 Mbp M1 Max 64GB memory version during the launch event. Still fast enough for everything I need it to do. Including editing 4k 60 ProRes video. Apple made the original M1 chips so good hardly anyone wants or needs to upgrade.
Great video! I'm tempted to upgrade from my M1 16" MBP to a smaller 14" M4 Pro, as it'd be more portable. I will wait until they arrive in the Apple Store in London though, so I can take a look at one first. LA? I must admit I'm a little bit jealous!
It is great the base model MacBook Pro now has increased RAM and the extra port. Those were the two reasons for me to buying the M3 Pro of previous generation. Mind you I don't think there is any need to upgrade if you own an M1, M2 or M3 - they are all incredible!
I preordered that base model mini honestly I’m just happy that base models of apples devices can be the recommended option now explaining the caveat of upgrading the ram to family and friends before this always just got confusing for a lot of them as they’re not techy. Honestly though even if M4 mac book airs are coming next year those M2 and M4 MacBooks are now looking a lot more attractive especially since a lot of places sell them on discount
I have a M1 max 16 inch that will be going on the market as soon as I see test results from reviewer. I want a M4 Max the 4 extra performance cores compared to the M1 Max is perfect for live audio production where you need as many cores as possible to run channels and plugins live. Hopefully Apple UPDATES Mainstage! It hasn't seen an update for a long time now and a ton of bands use it as their live audio mixer with audio interfaces. Fingers crosses M4 is as good as it looks!!! Cheers!
I’m waiting for the m5 to come out, but won’t buy it when it comes out, I’ll wait for the m6 to come out and THEN buy the m5 when it’s on sale. Haha. Me smart you no smart. Me Chinese. Only 2 more years left in mean time I still use my Sony lpt16fre15 I buy 9 year ago used on sale. I smart.
The truth is my 16” M1 Pro with 16GB is still more than adequate. I’ll wait for the M5 or M6. Apple is doing a great job of creating devices with longevity.
The M4 Mac mini at £599 looks phenomenal. I'm not a huge fan of Apple making the mini smaller and applying engineering resources to keeping the thing cool under load because of that. I live in a really hot country and when it comes to cooling I believe that taking a belt-and-braces approach always pays. It's not just about venting. It's about space, too. And it seems to me that this isn't the first time that Apple has ignored physical and the fluid dynamics of air and heat transfer when "making it smaller" purely for marketing purposes. The M3 MacBook Air at £999 is lovely and the M4 MacBook Pro at $1599 looks excellent on paper. All are of interest to me.
you just make stuff up, you have no idea about the cooling needed for such a device and whether there will be any thermal throttling under use (not benchmarking, that means nothing) the thiner, the lighter the better.
Yeah, with the M4 pro chip laptop or the mini you get thunderbolt five ports also which is a big upgrade But upgrade price on the mini for the M4 pro is a bit steep I have a MacBook Pro M1 16 inch so-only thing I would consider would be iPad Pro M4 13”
The fact that you get a solid built & long lasting machine, sleek design, great keyboard, phenomenal speakers, amazing performace per-watt, decent camera, 120Hz, Mini-Led, and all this in combination with a stunning display that now reaches 1000nits in SDR was beyond my imagination and hopes... Someone will say "but it's way overpriced", maybe... but who else can offer this kind of integration, specs and experience except Apple? We all know why everyone wants Apple products so bad, especially the MacBooks, it's because of their ability to make splendid machines in almost all realms. The only downside of MacBooks now being --> oily keycaps that loose coating way to fast and lack of decent games compatibility on MacOS imo... Imagine how great the display is about to be next year with the new 'Tandem-OLED'👀
$200 for an 8GB or 256GB storage upgrade is not 'maybe' overpriced, it’s clearly overpriced. They know their business that’s for sure. Also, they are very heavy and unattractive (to me), with no OLED and no touchscreen, and you're selling your soul to Apple :) I’m interested in the tech, and I hope it continues to give a good fight against the best PCs, but I don’t want it, and I don’t think I will ever invest in it.
I’ve always been wondering why the biggest complaint about the Magic Mouse is the charging system and not the fact it’s unusable for games, specifically shooters or anything where you want both the right and left buttons?
You don't navigate with the terminal? That's what I do as a Mac power user but Finder has integration with the terminal and a decent batch renaming tool
Unpopular opinion here : The increase of RAM would likely be reserved to keep AI always ready with high responsiveness. Meaning the available user RAM would be significantly less than the full RAM amount.
Definitely interested in the new M4 Mac Mini. It might need some time to get used to a taller mini PC, but the price definitely drew my interest. I could buy an M4 Mac Mini 16/512 and a NexDock or UPERFECT lapdock, and they're still almost half the price of what I'd pay for the M4 MacBook Pro 14 with the same 16/512 trim.
Thanks for sharing your review! I have a MacBook Pro 16GB memory, 8 core (4performance and 4 efficiency)14” M1 1Tb 2020. I edit videos using FCP, Blender and photogrammetry with my drones images. I want to upgrade, but can’t decide. Which one do you recommend between MacBook Pro M3 max or M4 pro ? I’ll appreciate your advice! Thanks 😊
There is no reason for Apple not to include M4 in the MacBook Air. Thank you for 16gb RAM, but no thank you for continuing to sell the Air with the older chip, despite the fanboys who will, no doubt, be out in force to defend Apple.
They should change the screens of all non pro models, you don't need to be a pro to enjoy an OLED/Mini LED high refresh screen specially when all the competition has already moved on. The separation should be only processing power and maybe color accuracy, things a professional would pay more for their workflow, not basic things that affect the experience of using the product. The pro moniker always seemed a like greedy tactic to make people pay more than something actually made for professionals.
High five to John Ternus and the brilliant team pricing these new Macs. They are very well priced for the improvements compared to the M1 or M2 series. Comparing the M2 Ultra Studio to the M4 Max MBP 👏
The dilemma for me is if it's worth uploading to the M4 Pro, but then if I get the M4 Pro I'd want to spend the extra and go for the proper 20 core GPU version and same CPU as the Max. I don't know if the M4 Pro 20 core GPU variant is really worth the extra £600.
wow you just saved my life and my bank account by telling me about the 16gb air beacause i was going to buy one but with the additional 200£ for the 16GB as it used to be i was just going to add more money and buy this years pro but now i know the better THANKS!
Magic Mouse underside charging is definitely a bad design. Would have been nice to have a little bit of an extra base "lip" that would allow charging while still using wired. The top didn't need to overhang over the body quite so much. Not a designer but charging is a bid deal.
I bought one of the M3 Pro and found the performance middling at best. I do not expect this for $2000. with a Wacom tablet hooked to it for use in my classroom, it's ability to mirror to a TV in my classroom it's CRIPPLED. I keep a Mac around because my students have iPads and it's very useful for turning in video projects with AirDrop... but it's my last Mac. I'm done buying underpowered but pretty hardware.
We need benchmarks ASAP: I'd like to see multi-threaded compile time (C/C++/Rust/C#/Golang/Java), inference in various open models and fine tuning. Benchmarked against an optimised computer with an 4090. I fully expect the M4 Max with 64GB ram to outperform the 4090.
I have a request for your future videos. I am planning to upgrade to M4 14 inch and my main priority will be battery life because i am always on the go (rarely use demanding tasks). Can you please do a real world battery life comparison between the base M4, and the binned M4 pro, and the full M4 pro? Depending on this real world battery i will do my purchase. If there is no significant hit on battery life i will go with the higher models but if battery takes a hit i will keep the base one.

I bought the M4 Max over an upgrade for my M1 Pro 2021. I do really large LLMs, Docker, coding you name it. 16Gb just isnt enough lol
You need at least 64 or 128 GB RAM.
I always use the trackpad. Way better than the mouse!
The AI better tell me it loves me and talk really dirty for over $7,000!
If you like, or you could get some work done. Up to you.
@tonyburzio4107 you're no fun Tony.
you can have that AI in app and configure it
@@PSy84 for $7k you could probably have that AI installed into a sex doll.
@@PSy84 for almost $8,000 you could probably have that AI installed into a sex doll.
M5 better
@@indiePrad hah hah I was thinking to wait until probably M10 coming 😆
i bought a m4 max only for youtube/twitch and playing wow. im so happy
Rocking a 2012 MacBook Pro, after 12 years decided this year it’s time for a refresh 🎉🎉
I like your presentation style. Subscribed.
I just ordered mine. Decided to go for the standard screen one. I just don’t work outdoors or in public spaces that often. Not worth the price at least for me!
Even that you don’t need that. Already the normal screen size has extremely low reflection and also the nano display washes out colours
@@Konstantinos_A agree with that too, I’ve seen videos of how it looks in the m4 iPads and I’m not totally convinced.
These reviews are SOOOOOOOOO much better an easier to listen to and more concise than other bloggers and I'm on 42 seconds in.
If I hear..... "So thennnnn guysssss......." and "what's inside of it" in Matt talks in that Mickey Mouse voice one more time :D
Nice job Tech Chap! :)
Oooh. Matte displays. What innovation.
Great video, love the recommendations! Best out there on RUclips.
I recently purchased an M3 Air 16/512 for $1700, but it’s now on sale for $1500. 😢
If it’s within 2 weeks of purchase you can call Apple and ask for the difference to be credited to you
Always great to watch your videos. 👍
I loved the design of the mouse but changed to the touchpad. I love this more
Dam, super comprehensive vid, love it!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@andyH_England@andyH_England Intel laptops are now more expensive than Macbooks - XPS and Zenbook S as examples in 14" guise.
which color to go? Silver or space black
Get into a charging habit, say at the end of each week, where you charge it fully. Problem solved.
My M1 Macbook Pro is still absolutely flying. I can't imagine needing to replace it any time soon. I still might buy a new Mini though, just because.
The lower tier M4 MacBook Pro is better for those transitioning from Windows or dealing with financial issues currently.
lol what?? The m4 base is fine
Or for those of us that dont use those super taxing editing or coding apps
@@Jeorgy92 If your workload is light, I wouldn't even look at a new M4 Pro Macbook. You can do light work with the M3 Air or a refurbished M2 Macbook Pro 14-inch.
Ordered the 16 Mbp M1 Max 64GB memory version during the launch event.
Still fast enough for everything I need it to do. Including editing 4k 60 ProRes video.
Apple made the original M1 chips so good hardly anyone wants or needs to upgrade.
Keep telling that to yourself :)
2:25 Holy smokes you just confirmed the Caldigit TS5 plus!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG OMG
How was this missed???
Let’s gooooo
Tnx for that! I almost missed it!
The M4 Pro can have max 48GB when even the MAC mini with the same chip goes up to 64GB. 😮😮
Imagine that Mac Mini in Space Black. DROOL.
That is such a cool idea. I wish they had that option.
Great video! I'm tempted to upgrade from my M1 16" MBP to a smaller 14" M4 Pro, as it'd be more portable. I will wait until they arrive in the Apple Store in London though, so I can take a look at one first. LA? I must admit I'm a little bit jealous!
Been waiting for and just ordered Mac Mini M4 chip with the 24GB unified memory 😃
It is great the base model MacBook Pro now has increased RAM and the extra port. Those were the two reasons for me to buying the M3 Pro of previous generation. Mind you I don't think there is any need to upgrade if you own an M1, M2 or M3 - they are all incredible!
As a Vision Pro owner I'll be buying a new Mac Mini to remote into for the full Mac experience without having to carry a Mac to the coffee shop
Man ALIVE! Tom is getting "whet" over a little bump up in processor power.
Hahahahahahaha!
Price of M4 macbook in India is very high. The base macbook pro 14 inch costs around 2000 USD and for the 16 inch it goes around 3000 USD 💀
According to me the best value for money mac is mac mini m4 which costs around 700 USD.
I smart.
Good for you, Chinese.
You english, kill
I finally upgraded my M1 Air to the MBP M4. These frauds got me
The Mac Mini is really tempting, even though I've got a beefy desktop.
To justify the 16”. They should throw in an extra thunderbolt port. The larger body should allow for more connectivity.
it allows more screen
Why can’t they make games with anticheat work on Mac. They would kill windows laptops with that.
The truth is my 16” M1 Pro with 16GB is still more than adequate. I’ll wait for the M5 or M6. Apple is doing a great job of creating devices with longevity.
Going to be the Mac Mini for me. Love it
Amazing they still look exactly the same at the M1. My M1 still doing just fine.
Video starts at 11:29 😂
Still got my M1 Pro and it works fine. Wish I had 32Gb of RAM instead of the 16Gb. That is the only reason I would upgrade but will wait and see!
Apple gives me $800 for my current MacBook Pro as a trade-in!!!
And you give up your soul :)
THAT M4 MAC MINI IS MY FAVORITE DEVICE NOW
The M4 Mac mini at £599 looks phenomenal.
Yeah, with the M4 pro chip laptop or the mini you get thunderbolt five ports also which is a big upgrade
But upgrade price on the mini for the M4 pro is a bit steep
I have a MacBook Pro M1 16 inch so-only thing I would consider would be iPad Pro M4 13”
Which camera and microphone did you use for this video? The quality is very good!
Base memory being upgraded to 16GB RAM is great news and long overdue.
Considering an M4 Pro Mac Mini, probably next year, so my current M1 Mac Mini can go to the rehearsal room...
Oops I preordered the MBP M4 Pro before watching! Happy to be upgrading from the MBP 2015!
Also, they are very heavy and unattractive (to me), with no OLED and no touchscreen, and you're selling your soul to Apple :)
I’m interested in the tech, and I hope it continues to give a good fight against the best PCs, but I don’t want it, and I don’t think I will ever invest in it.
I’ve always been wondering why the biggest complaint about the Magic Mouse is the charging system and not the fact it’s unusable for games, specifically shooters or anything where you want both the right and left buttons?
no one plays on mac
Which MacBook to get for gaming? Is the max chip not necessary?
it's not good for gaming. yet
@@xfghffhfg even with the M4 Max?
Does finder still suck? Yes.
You don't navigate with the terminal? That's what I do as a Mac power user but Finder has integration with the terminal and a decent batch renaming tool
@ Sounds like you’re more of a power bottom.
Man literally said I’ve not had first hand experience of it but has included it in the video title……
The new Mac mini is my choice, base M4 is enough. If you want a MBP, take the M4 pro at least.
Let's see how long it will take Apple to get rid of that horrendous notch.
no design changes on Magic Mouse? that is nuts
The charging port on the bottom is intentional. Of course they wouldn’t change it, unless they decided to come up with a new feature.
Even if you disregarding the location of the charging port, Magic Mouse is terrible. Just get a Logi Lift.
wow you just saved my life and my bank account by telling me about the 16gb air beacause i was going to buy one but with the additional 200£ for the 16GB as it used to be i was just going to add more money and buy this years pro but now i know the better THANKS!
Magic Mouse underside charging is definitely a bad design. Would have been nice to have a little bit of an extra base "lip" that would allow charging while still using wired. The top didn't need to overhang over the body quite so much.
Not a designer but charging is a bid deal.
My M1 14" supports 2 external displays and has the 3rd USB-C port... so it's not new, they just brought it back...
Would you recommend the 16" model over the 14" version for someone using it for college?
We need benchmarks ASAP: I'd like to see multi-threaded compile time (C/C++/Rust/C#/Golang/Java), inference in various open models and fine tuning. Benchmarked against an optimised computer with an 4090. I fully expect the M4 Max with 64GB ram to outperform the 4090.
i want a mini MAX haha ... ill likely get the Pro, looks like a great overall update.
Tell me about the brightness of these new MacBooks. When you use it indoors, does it get bright enough ?
I don't care where the magic mouse charges. It's the abysmal DPI and ergonomics that make it a nonstarter for me.
So i’m really excited about this launch with the new Macbook’s. I currently have an 11” Macbook Air 2015 and am looking to upgrade. I was thinking of getting the M4 Pro but after watching this video i’m thinking to just get the M4 base model again like my initial thoughts. What would you suggest?
150$? in my country they charging 192$ for that reflective screen! Idk .... as a professional iOS developer ... I will stick with my M1 16/512 for a long time... that is such a briliant machine!
i have a macbook pro m3 since 4 motnhs now, my biggest fear is , what happened if ssd dies in the future , can i replace it ?
These machines have vastly more power than 99.99% of the population need.
Not true. These are intended for pros, that’s why they’re called "Pro" The faster you finish the job and the more multitasking you can do, the better
