Just drove this route yesterday all the way from Barstow after a snowy weekend with friends in Big Bear. Cut the trip short to Reno and went up Luther pass road to Meyers and down the 50 back home to Folsom.
I made that road trip in 1966 and was entranced with this part of California that I dreamed of living here and retiring nearby some day. Alas, I was transferred to the East Coast 1968, and eventually made my nest here in Delaware, never to return. I'm 81 now, this video brings back fond memories of my youthful traveling days and the 10 years I lived and enjoyed California. Thanks.
Thank you! I lived in Bishop for 7 years and I know every detail of this trip. I'm a senior citizen now so this video trip brought so much enjoyment for me. Your time on the film project was most appreciated.
I lived in Reno for almost 20 years. What an amazing life I had there, let bed driving this highway down to Vegas to go home to Alabama. Wild mustangs, small desert towns, to area 51, it's a trip that's for sure!🙂
Stone cold 70 said it perfectly...whenever I want to take a beautiful trip I watch this video and for the duration I'm lost in the music, scenery, small towns and radio that give it life...you are an artist with no peer.
When you do this trip in the early spring, the northern part of this trip, the sierras are completely covered in snow and the view of Jobs peak above the Carson Valley is breathtaking.
My wife made this trip from Reno to Riverside California, and San Diego 15 times in the 1970's and early 80's, she loved the drive. You can stop often and so not need to drive long distances without passing through a little town to stop and rest. We are old now and would be afraid to make that trip alone so this is such a great video, like the music and the memories, Thank You so much.
I HAVE DRIVEN THIS AT LEAST 15 YEARS IN A ROW, IT IS REALLY A PRETTY DRIVE THE FURTHER NORTH YOU GET, I MISS IT NOW AS MY FRIEND SOLD HIS HOME IN BRIDGEPORT, BUT I'LL ALWAYS HAVE THE FOND MEMORIES.
Hi Mike, It's 7 years later and l hope this finds you doing well. Bishop is one of my favorite places in California, my home state. The drive was so relaxing (well, up until you got into the traffic blockage doing one mile in 40 minutes, but I digress) and it all reminds me of what I still LOVE in California, even though I am here teaching in Las Vegas for a bit longer than expected. Guess if the world is still standing this coming spring 2021, I may just hop in my Corvette and do the route from Las Vegas to Reno to Bishop, just because. It's rarified air once I get onto Highway 395 to Bishop and Heaven all the way! Cheers and all the best in 2021!
My father who had lived all over the word came to visit me in S. California and I drove him up to Reno. We stopped in Bishop for lunch and he made me drive all around the town and fell in love. He said that he wanted to move to Bishop now but his ties to Virginia were too strong. Schatts (?) bakery was always my pit stop. Still think about their fruit bars.
Thank you! I used to go over the hill on Hwy 120 from Oakdale & usually went as fare as Bishop. Spent a whole summer in Mono once! Wonderful little towns, shops & people. Loved your pictures & saw so many familiar places. So many good memories ❤ (I’m 82)
Having lived here (reno) my entire live I gotta say, some of the drive I get to have would be dreams for others. Driving up Mt. Rose and descending on Lake Tahoe just to see the water and then leave is something not many people get to experience.
Took same drive a few weeks ago. Beautiful country. I had thought Alaska and the Scottish highlands were most scenic I had ever seen. Not so sure anymore.
Was stationed at Stead AFB in the mid '50s when the population was about 40,000. Moved back to Reno in 1971. Many of my fellow Airmen stayed in the area after their discharge. Used to drive Mt Rose highway many times. The Christmas Tree on Mt Rose highway was my favorite restaurant in the whole area with their steaks grilled over mountain mahogany coals. There is not a better flavor.
I loved this. Surprised you have so few views, 3,200. The mix of music is terrific. I don't recognize that beautiful orchestra music, but it really enhances "the ride" experience. So nice touch there. And the radio voices are perfect, as was the western music. You captured all the great things of being out on the road in the west. I've never been north of Walker on 395. Your video has now inspired my next trip. Excellent work!!
Extremely well done!!! I drove from Glendora, California to Pinecrest, California many, many times on US 395. We called it "The Long Way" but it was worth the extra 1 1/2 hour drive. Took Hwy 108 over the Sonora Pass to Pinecrest. What stunningly beautiful scenery. This video let's us re-live at least part of that wonderful time in our lives. Thank you!!
Awesome video of the most beautiful 200 miles of highway, anywhere. We just drove it yesterday. Whenever I'm missing my dad, I'll come watch this, as he and I drove this route so often, as I drove him from SoCal, to come stay with us in NorCal. I feel his spirit is out there!
Thanks for the complement Mike. I obtained the orchestra music from SmartSound and it is licensed for my use. It was quite a job to edit and mix. The voice doing the weather forecast on the radio is mine.
My boyfriend & I were planning on making the move to Odessa, Tx. He visited to check out the area. Came back and said NOPE. I can’t leave my mountains. 😂
Excellent! I've made that drive many times and always enjoyed it. I can't drive any more and this video made it happen for me one more time. Thank you si much.
Good job, been going up and down 395 for 42 years. Seems like my entire life has been shaped by the memories of all my experiences spent living it at locations on either side of this highway. To know this highway and become so emotionally attached to it, is to have traveled it in all of the Seasons. Both day and night and during the best and worst weather conditions it has to offer. With the loves of my life, with friends and family or alone. Sometimes because I had too, but mostly because I wanted too. In the towns and the surrounding mountains and desert so much introspect and inspiration, so many adventures. Physical challenges and calculated risks taken when I’ve ventured into the heart of the landscape and left the vehicle waiting at various trailheads that make access so easy to the immensity of it all. Instructions have been made to sprinkle my remains from Coso Junction to the Sonora Pass turn off , so I can become of it and not just in it in the end. Compared to the rest of California so little has changed on the Eastside and there in lies much of it appeal doesn’t it? Thanks for the video
You just surmised my feelings and experiences identically with this exceptional video . My congrats to whomever was in charge of HOLDING the camera for so long .
Thank you for uploading this. I fell in love with 395 back in 1989. Especially the Walker River area. I'll never forget when my first hubby and I were on our way to my brother's house in Auburn and we broke down on the divided hwy grade just out of Bishop. Fortunately we brought a motorcycle. My hubby unloaded it and had to ride back to town for a tow truck. Expensive! We spent the day in the Bishop City park waiting for my brother to get there with a tow bar and take us to Auburn! Love the music too.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm a former resident of Reno and I still miss my Eastern Sierra. Just a little help, Ponderosa Ranch is in Incline Village at the north end of Lake Tahoe, not in Washoe Valley.
The Ponderosa Ranch house in the TV series was located in Washoe Valley. Look up the burning map used in the opening titles for the TV show. The Ponderosa Ranch that was in Incline Village was a movie set for exterior scenes for the TV series. My wife and I were married there over 30 years ago. It was dismantled and is all gone now.
a beautiful drive. even better, all the way from the palmdale area to reno. this high desert geography/geology is stunning. (that shot in the beginning, taken from the virginia highlands is just a memory now.)
I hitchhiked from Red Mountain, California to Reno.... Took off down 395 on july 4th 1995.... Was in Reno the next day. Got a ride from Red Mountain to Bishop,, dropped off in Bishop, then caught a ride from Bishop to Mammoth, etc,etc.... However, I've driven 395 many times since then.
Great trip. Really like the location markers and mile notations.Music choice excellent. Thank you for sharing. Refreshing not to have the camera always focused on the car occupants and their conversations. Well Done👍
Thanks for posting this! I still remember the snowy night I rolled into Bishop, CA, on March 31, 1998, and made a payphone call to Mammoth Lakes to make sure 395 was clear before attempting to drive up Sherwin Grade. I was on my way to KMMT-FM in Mammoth and a new job as a radio DJ. I lived in Mammoth for a while and made the drive back and forth from Reno and also south on my way to I-10 many times. At the 4:20 mark is the curve in the highway (right by Bridgeport) where I nearly drove off the road and crashed while heading south, after driving over Ebbetts Pass at around 3am. I remember driving past the Lee Vining school on 395 the day after some kids burned it down. I remember so many landmarks that are shown or referred to in this video, Mono Lake, the turnoff to Bodie, Virginia City, Walker Canyon, Topaz Lodge & Casino, and many more. Great video, thanks!
Thank you for your comments! Two of the DJs who used to work with me here at KIBS in Bishop in the late 1980s and early '90s later went to KMMT where they stayed for about two years before moving on.
I've enjoyed this so much. For many years, this was a favorite journey for my daughter and I (still is). I've missed it so much and you've made me feel as if I were right there with you. thank you so much!
Reno is definitely getting over crowded now. The transfer from 395 (580) to 80 can slow down any commute. What have you found to do during the shut down? Outdoors away from everyone is always nice. I’m ready to hit the drive in theater though.
We have made this trip many times and it's still one of my favorites road trips. I feel like I'm home when I travel along HWY 395. Thanks so much for sharing. Beautifully done.
Very nice , I’ve made that drive many times . I figured I’d learn something , and I did . I was always fascinated by Mono , but didn’t know it was that old . You mentioned Topaz , but not the lake. I’m sure I’ll have to discover something about that I didn’t know before . Thanks for your inspiration !
Something else my friend told me about Mono I think if i remember right... Clint Eastwood filmed a movie there, they built a set I can't remember the name my friend told me but they build an entire town around this movie
In 1982 we were visiting in California near Oakland. We drove from there to Reno. Different route than this, but still beautiful. When we started up into the mountains the smell of the trees was amazing. I'll never forget that smell!!! The roads were very different that long ago.
I loved it!!! With the Corona virus going around in full swing, places of business closed, travel locations like national parks, closed, beaches closed, etc., etc., etc., this travel video of highway 395 from Bishop (which I have visited numerous times) to Reno, Nevada (been there) going through Lee Vining (been there) Walker (planning on going there again on July, 2020) was just the antidote I needed. Thank you and I am going to watch it again and again. The music sound track was perfect.
I drove through Bishop on our Grand Tour back in 2019. Starting in LA, then up to Monterey and San Francisco. From there we headed to Mammoth Lakes, through Bishop to Las Vegas and then even more stops on the way to Chicago. A total of 4296 miles in three weeks. And in all of that trip the part that has stuck with me was driving though California. A beautiful state with lands like nothing I’ve ever seen coming from England as I do. When all this virus stuff is over and as long as you guys will have me, I’m coming back to see more of the place. Until then, videos like this sustain me, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for them.
Loved it!!! Fantastic views. Great music. Very scenic views. And, did I mention great music! You did an outstanding job. My family and I take this trip often. The memories you brought back. Thank you!!!
My wife and I lived in Reno from 2008-2010 while I was in grad school at UNR and we made this same drive many times for our visits to the national parks and SoCal. One of the most beautiful drives in America. I live in NY now and we just don't have any drive this wondrous. Brought back so many memories. Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing it.
terry wheatley I Second That. Upstate New York Is Awsome. I Would Love To Do It In My GEO METRO. (How Do I Know? I Was A Truck Driver And Transporter Driver. I Drove On NY 104 From Rochester To I-81 Then North To Watertown Before Crossing Into Ontario Via Thousand Islands Crossing.)
this is a perfect mood setting video I must have watch it 50 times already when I've had a bad day I watch it and relaxes me you did such a great job on it a work of art bravo !!!
Bravo, this video had me enthralled...the music soundtrack, injected with local small town America radio was just awesome and set the mood like I was your back seat in the car. #America
Amazing 👍 thank you for sharing this wonderful work, I absolutely love the sound track you chose👍 after being locked up for COVID for over a year, it’s good to take a road trip👍 in the ‘80’s I drove the entire country (45 states) you’re video connects with my soul, as the soundtrack plays, it is very reminiscent of those days. I used to listen to books on tape. I once drove from Woodland Maine to Bellingham Wa. In 3 1/2 days, I was homesick. 1983 thunderbird was a great road trip vehicle👍 you have blessed this old man, thank you🙏
Nice drive brings back memories of my truck driving days. And there are many more great roads to travel out there. Now retired on the Oregon coast watching you're trip on RUclips.
Love this drive. I've done it every summer for years. Huntington Beach to Tahoe. Bridgeport is my favorite stop. Picturesque little town. Huge cattle fields. Great little ice cream stand. Love it!
I live in Reno, and your town of Bishop is so much nicer looking! Of course, it is much smaller. I think I will reciprocate the trip and drive Reno to Bishop to, once again, view this beautiful countryside. Thank you so much for sharing!
Expertly done,! I really enjoyed the trip between the Bishop and Reno with the well place and professionally mixed music. You created a fitting road trip mood. Par Excellence!!
seriously thank you for this video im totally homesick now thanks to you I got to see all the places I've lived , partied at, slept outside at and "messed around" at. Geez I miss that area Seattle can't compare.
At the end of my sabbatical in Arizona in 2012 before returning to Madrid, I took the route from Tempe to San Francisco with a colleague, a bit randomly, visiting some fantastic places. Beautiful and original remember of your great country, thank you.
I've listened to you on the radio tons of times. Wish I could drive the route as quick as watching all the highlights. I ran into traffic in Carson all the time just like you. Thanks for the cool edit!
Awesome video, could watch all day, very well done with music and local radio highlights, love the info sub titles included, I can't say enough, I gladly subscribe, hope to see more!
Maybe someone can help, when I was in Nevada around 1991 while driving on a freeway I came into this area with tons of these round circular concrete structures that had a opening or viewing area on each one with a bunch on both sides of the hwy all openings facing the road. They look like the old bunker thing where the viewed the a bomb from. I always thought it was odd and looked like the site of a future battle and battle plan the way they were laid out and both facing inward on either side. Anyway has anyone seen these things? I don't know where they are but always thought it was off the 395 somewhere.
3/10/2019: Such a great area! Nice job--excellent job on the soundtrack...it's hard to believe the new freeway above Washoe Valley and Pleasant Valley opened almost 6 and a half years ago...
Never been to Reno nor Bishop. I have a best friend who just moved back to reno and going to visit her for the first time. I told one of my good friends that Im going to Reno ( with my boyfriend who has never been to Reno as well) she highly recommended that we drive through Bishop California because of its beautiful sights. Our trip will be Henderson, NV >Bishop, Cali> Reno, NV. Trip will be a little longer but after watching this amazing video the drive will be worth it. Thank you for sharing. (:
Love this drive and never get tired of doing it! 9:28 I bought acreage to the left of that water tower and I'm in the process of building my dream retirement home.
A very nice & well done video. Thanks. I don't think I've passed this way but it brings back memories of those semi-desert landscapes and lakes. Hmm I would prefer a bit more of the local radio, they are part of the travel romance.
+nashrahsolace Thank you for your kind comments. Even though I work at KIBS, I had to cut out most of the music on the radio because of BMI and ASCAP licensing. Our station pays a big fee each year for licensing music over the air and streaming on the web, but not for RUclips. The background music in this video is legally licensed for my use.
Mike, really nice nice trip and video. I liked the time and mile markers and just keeping track of where you were at the time had to be difficult. Your music choice was good and kept me engaged. I especially like the radio interweave, very easy to watch and follow. Good job.
Nice drive when the weather is good. Imagine a foot of snow on the road in those mountains at night. About 20 years ago coming from LA going home to Dayton I ran into a that blizzard. Not like the plains but a mountain snow blitz. I'm lucky to be here after that trip.
I have driven through a couple of heavy blizzards on that route during Winter too. On one trip back to Bishop the snow on the highway was up to the hubs on my 4X4 truck, snow blowing so hard I could hardly see, no one else on the road, found out when I got to Sherwin Grade that they had closed the hwy.
I agree with StoneCold75 completely. The beautiful countryside, the small towns, the wonderful music with just the right touch of small town radio injections was perfectly done. I also think that perhaps a return trip from Reno to Bishop in the afternoon made about identical to this would be well received by everyone also. Thanks for your very well done work on this!
Auwwwwww I love your trips,,,,one of the nice video on youtube so far,,,very clear ,,beautiful places,,,United stated one of my favourite country for travelling,,i hope 1 day I can travel to American,,,thnks for sharing,,from Kuala Lumpur cityboy,,hiihhhi
I love the 395. Driven many times from L.A. to Bishop, Mammoth Lakes and up to Reno and all the way to Susanville, where my grandparents retired to on their ranch. I do believe there’s a traffic light in Bridgeport though. Right? Satellite radio comes in handy!
Just drove this route yesterday all the way from Barstow after a snowy weekend with friends in Big Bear. Cut the trip short to Reno and went up Luther pass road to Meyers and down the 50 back home to Folsom.
This video with the beautiful dramatic music pretty much describes how I feel when I come back home to June Lake. Thank you!

March 2021, I enjoyed the video. We now live in Reno Nevada relocated from L.A. We love the change of seasons, we love it here.
We used to , as well ! Thanks for the bump in the cost of living here ! Ha Ha ! LOL !
Welcome. I love reno. Thiers so much too do year round.
From L.A. to Boise in 96, then to Reno in 99 where I have lived since then. I love this place!

Perfect video! Music, scenery... all of it 👍🏼
Thank you so much!
Many many trips up and down Hwy 395 with the family. Great times, great memories!
The music seems to have been composed just for this dream drive. Enchanting, breathtaking, glorious, transporting, awe inspiring. Bravo!!

I spent so much of the first quarter of my life going back-and-forth on this road that watching this video gives me the chills.

Such a nice drive. I have done it many times. Thank you for showing it.
You're welcome.
Totally love this video and the great music. Your graphics and explanations are perfect. Sure hope you're going to do some more of this. Thanks.
Thanks a lot for the video. The music is very dreamy like the video.
Simply AMAZING. Very well put together.
Thanks, it was a lot of work editing the video.
Born in los Angeles & now live in reno, the 395 is one of the most scenic drives youll ever experience. Thanks for the video.

Little late on a response, but thank you for your comments!
Thank you for your comments! We'd love to have a Brit like you return to the Eastern Sierra.
Loved it!!! Fantastic views. Great music. Very scenic views. And, did I mention great music! You did an outstanding job. My family and I take this trip often. The memories you brought back. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for your comments. As many times as I have traveled up 395, I never get tired of this drive.
Very cool video I love hwy 395 and Bishop is my favorite town in the state.
395 beautiful, took a load up to mountain warfare training center, slept up there 14 thousand 100 feet.
I miss these mountains every day.
+Maxfli82 There is more to do in New York
+Maxfli82 new York has a lot of beautiful roads in upstate, I would love to drive my Harley on some of them!
terry wheatley I Second That.
Maxfli82 did you drove in the lake placid area? one of the best in the east coast especially during fall season
this is a perfect mood setting video I must have watch it 50 times already when I've had a bad day I watch it and relaxes me you did such a great job on it a work of art bravo !!!
I can't thank you enough for your comment! Thanks Charlie Harley.
Nice production, always wondered what that road was like past Mammoth.
Bravo, this video had me enthralled...the music soundtrack, injected with local small town America radio was just awesome and set the mood like I was your back seat in the car. #America
StoneCold75 Thank you so much for your comments. I filmed it very nonchalantly with nothing in mind at the time and then later spent hours editing it.
Ok.....I'm racking my brain. I cannot figure out what soundtrack your main song is from. Will you please tell me??? =)
That's exactly how I felt
Really loved the town of Lee Vining
Awesome video ... the real feel of driving .. enjoyment... the bgm connected good creativity, with local radio notes... great work .. lovely
Thank you so much!
Love Reno Nevada. love HOT August Night's. Time 4 another trip
1983 thunderbird was a great road trip vehicle👍 you have blessed this old man, thank you🙏
Thank you!
Sonora Pass is one of the most beautiful passes off of 395!
One of my favorite road trips, ever!! Great video! Thank you!!
Drove this many times back in the 70's, miss those days, thanks for sharing 👍
Nice drive brings back memories of my truck driving days. And there are many more great roads to travel out there. Now retired on the Oregon coast watching you're trip on RUclips.
I like the choice of music, and I really like how you added the radio stations to bring in some local color.
Love this drive. I've done it every summer for years. Huntington Beach to Tahoe. Bridgeport is my favorite stop. Picturesque little town. Huge cattle fields. Great little ice cream stand. Love it!
Newport Beach to Tahoe. Definitely one of the best drives to experience
Bonanza was a tv series that ran on NBC< (KRNV), from 1959 to 1973, there was also a spinoff called Ponderosa.
Yes, Ponderosa was the name they gave to the Bonanza show when it went into syndication on TV.
seriously thank you for this video im totally homesick now thanks to you I got to see all the places I've lived , partied at, slept outside at and "messed around" at. Geez I miss that area Seattle can't compare.
Love the scenery and music !! Good job !!
Had the pleasure myself more than a handful of drives. Its beautiful.
At the end of my sabbatical in Arizona in 2012 before returning to Madrid, I took the route from Tempe to San Francisco with a colleague, a bit randomly, visiting some fantastic places. Beautiful and original remember of your great country, thank you.
This was awesome!
Born and raised in Reno, but haven't been back there for 35 years...
Thank you.
It was nice to see it!
Loved the video, I felt I was along for the ride. So well done. Thank you
Thank you for your kind words.
Such a cool drive, I hope I'll experience it one day.
Loved the video, just got back from a trip to Owens Valley and Death Valley and Mammoth Lakes..my favorite highway 395
.Frank T. ( California)
Outstanding video! Beautiful drive, great mixing of music, local radio blurbs, and captions. Please post another when you are able. Thanks!
Right Hand Author I'm working on one right now.
I've listened to you on the radio tons of times. Wish I could drive the route as quick as watching all the highlights. I ran into traffic in Carson all the time just like you. Thanks for the cool edit!
Thanks for the comments Scott.
Will be making this drive in a couple of months. Thanks for showing me what to expect along the way.
Thanks for the compliment, you will enjoy the drive.
Love this drive and never get tired of doing it! 9:28 I bought acreage to the left of that water tower and I'm in the process of building my dream retirement home.
Leviathan Mine Road, that's a nice area.
Very nicely done. Appreciate the regular speed.
Strange that you can't play published music through You Tube without paying You Tube, Must be expensive, Love the Video, Great Job !!
Mike, really nice nice trip and video. I liked the time and mile markers and just keeping track of where you were at the time had to be difficult. Your music choice was good and kept me engaged. I especially like the radio interweave, very easy to watch and follow. Good job.
Wayne Zeman Thank you for the kind words. It was a bit of work.
Great sights! Great sounds! Well done sir!
Made this trip myself. It really shows the beauty of California. Thanks for making this video.
So enjoyable on every level. Thank you for sharing this.

Beautiful video, very nice music also.......learned a lot from your video
I lived in Bishop for twenty years and drove 395 many times. Thanks for the memories.
Loved that route when I finally made a trip west. Lots to do and see along 395.
There is no traffic light in Bridgeport.
Totally cool, I'm glad this popped up in my suggestions.
I love 395, I've done some hiking and backpacking in the Sierras, thanks for sharing.
I have driven the route maybe 20 times. The route will always hang with you. There is a beauty to the desert.
A very beautiful footage with excellent music too: my compliments!
Nice comment, thank you so much.
Bishop is a great little town. Excellent home basei for eastern Sierra recreation.
