True story, in the early 90's I was on a backpacking trip in Humphrey's Basin, which is behind the large mountains you see from Bishop. The mountains are around 13K feet and the Basin sits at around 9K feet. One morning we smelled the unmistakable scent of fresh baked bread that had wafted from Schat's all the way up the face of the mountains and into the Basin. We were drooling! And when we got out of the mountains and into town a few days later we descended on Schat's like a swarm of locusts and cleaned them out of their bread and pastries.

It's so nice to hear some one say that the West is the best! I get so tired of hearing people complaining, first thing, about how expensive the gas is, yes, it is, but the land and experiences you get here are what you came for! Do glad you tried some of our favorite places, Schat's and all the beauty around the area. Enjoy and thank you for coming❤️

Watching this tonight just after we returned home today from our adventures with you all this week made me smile so big but also miss you more than ever! You two are so fun to watch and even more fun to spend time with! We are so proud of you three! Great video with such beautiful scenery and those baked goods...yum!
The 395 from Hesperia to Reno is my most favorite drive!!! I've always wanted to take the 395 all the way to the Canadian Border (Laurier, WA) and mapped out the road trip with many, many foodie stops!!! Man, your video made me miss the 395!!! ENJOY, A+K!!!
Hooray!! I live in California and the eastern Sierra is some of my absolute favorite scenery. I spent a week at June Lake last summer and have been dying to go back. Thanks for sharing your trip. 😃
The West IS the best! and good to see you back in our neck of the woods. Nothing like the Sierra. I saw that pastry in the intro and I was like "ah they went to Schatts!"
Awesome to see you guys in California. The Eastern Sierras are incredible. Either that vending machine at Copper Top is new or I totally missed it last time I was there. Definitely buying something from it next time.
Thanks for another great video, you two are great tour guides, love the pastries at Schats and the vending machine at Coppertop BBQ, love Bishop, Lone Pine and 395 too. Never knew about the trees in Bishop, always so hot there in the summer. Love your positive energy enthusiasm humor and cooking taco’s.
In our college dorms I watched High Sierra for the first time and I was determined to visit Mount Whitney Portal and its famous switchbacks that you can see from Highway 395!
The Eastern Sierra are one of my favorite areas! Fall is my favorite time of year to visit them, but really all seasons are beautiful! Have fun in one of our states' gems!
So nice to see you showcase our favorite place on earth- our backyard, the Eastern Sierras. My husband and I camp a lot in this area, as well as boat, fish and ski!
Great video! We love this area, one of the best kept "secrets" in the West that isn't over-ridden with tourists yet (with 2nd place probably going to Rapid City, SD area). Schats Bakery is amazing, we typically stay at the hotel right next to it, which is also very nice. We also really like Pizza Factory in Bishop (I think Lone Pine also has one). Sorry you were unable to get permits for Mt. Whitney - I failed once in 1998 (too much snow) then succeeded in 1999, it'll be worth the wait when you do get there! The Whitney Portal does have a nice little gift shop. Look forward to additional videos in the area - the hike up Little Lakes Valley (Rock Creek) is a favorite and is pretty easy... I've always wanted to hike up to 2nd Lake (Big Pine Creek), such a great view of Temple Crag behind the lake. Can't wait to see the other plans you have for the Sierras later this summer - keep up the great videos, we love them!
Everything was so well done. Camping and mentioning western movies. The photography, the nature, the authenticity of the couple who creates it. The nice vehicle! The bike ride…the gourmet tacos… when they pulled out the coffee bean grinder and drank fresh coffee looking at those mountains ⛰ that was amazing as was his choice of movie they watched in the end. This way of traveling looks so appealing. 😎
Oh wow, I'm so looking forward to this Sierra series! We just got the news yesterday that my GF's next assignment is in Boston, so we have to drive alllll the way cross country and leave the beautiful west behind and I'm sad about it because west IS the best!
Oh man! That’s gonna be a journey! Boston is really cool too though! It is a bummer to leave the west but there’s good stuff to see in the northeast too! Definitely get into Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine if you can!
If you're going to Mammoth, here's some restaurant recommendations: The Stove for breakfast (10 out of 10 for my wife and I), for lunch/dinner, The Warming Hut (the BEST BBQ brisket sandwich, and amazing tomato bisque soup!); make sure you take the Poole Power Plant Road in Lee Vining canyon (narrow graded dirt road, but you should be able to take it); Mono Cone in Lee Vining, and Jolly Kone in Bridgeport are great places too.
So glad to see you enjoying the Eastern Sierras! We live in Bishop and love it here. Bishop's slogan is "Small town with a big back yard". So true! Happy traveling.
I can’t thank you enough for this adventure. I’m from Nevada city California spent a lot of time in the Sierras, but I had never been to Bishop. Next time I visit home because I live in Portland, Oregon now I am going there for sure that apple fritter, made my mouth water. Thank you guys for all you do and enjoyment that you give me.
Our roadtrip was cut short and didn't make it to the Ancient Bristlecone Pineforest. Got a few questions for you. 1) Was the ABPF worth the drive? 2) Saw you had some camera damage what did you end up replacing your broken gear with? 3) Did you stop at the Hot Creek Geological Site too? Appreciate the responses and really enjoy your vlogs. Stay safe out there.
Hey Mike! We thought the ABPF was definitely worth it! It would be even better if both trails up there were fully open. There were reports of snow on the longer trail at the time. The drive is incredible. Very steep and windy with wild views. We loved it. Yeah I (Adam) accidentally dunked our camera in the water at Havasu. It thankfully only ended damaging the mic, so we had to replace the mic. We are visiting Hot Creek in a future video! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Adam and Kathryn, another great video! Great that you included Lone Pine. We stopped there many years ago after having spent time in Death Valley and it was a wonderfully quaint time--we've always wanted to get back to Lone Pine and this video is just more encouragement. Later on the same trip we spent the night in Bishop on the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. What you didn't mention in the video is that Bishop is the home of Mule Days ... held on Memorial Day weekend. We were lucky to find an open hotel room, only paying twice the price listed in the chain's guidebook (this was in the 90s before things were online). We were glad for the room but the two was too busy for us to have wanted to stay to check things out. Thanks for doing that for us!
Lone Pine is a really neat little town! Since driving in the area we've seen several towns advertising their Mule Days festivities so we didn't know Lone Pine's was extra special! It would be fun to visit one day! Thanks and thanks for watching!
I wasn't even on a bike, but while you were, I found myself huffing and puffing a bit along with you as you rode those Alabama hills! :) And as for sleeping on a movie set, seems like the eastern sierras really are the star of the show! Loving your spring/summer travels this year so far - thanks for making me smile with you!
The Eastern Sierras = world-class hiking! Hwy 395 = a world-class drive! One of the most amazing places in the U.S. I recently spent a couple months hiking the southern part of the E. Sierras. There are so many amazing hikes up into the high country along the E. Sierra. I hope to do the northern half soon. Some more spots: - Crowley Lake Stone Columns - The Restaurant at Convict Lake - Earthquake Fault near Mammoth Lakes - Mono Lake South Tufa Area - incredible sunrises One more multi-day hike to put on your bucket list: Rae Lakes Loop Trail - get a small sample of the PCT and the John Muir Trail deep in the interior of the Sierras. Can't wait to see your adventures in one of my favorite areas of this great country!
Welcome to California! Hope you'll make your way up to Mt.Shasta area while you're here. Many epic sights - waterfalls, Castle Crags, lava caves, glass mountain, historic logging towns, mountain lakes, and you can drive to the snow.
A & K, I love your channel and have been following since you came to Michigan (we were planning a trip to the Porcupine Mountains so your videos were suggested). I've watched every video since, and am a huge fan. I'm 59 years old and will be hiking the John Muir Trail SOBO in Aug/Sept. so the couple times you pointed out Mt Whitney, my heart raced and I got butterflies in my stomach just imagining being up there. Hope you are able to get a permit one of these years. Anyway, it makes me happy to see how happy you guys are in the Sierra's. Take care of yourselves and I look forward to your next adventures!
Awesome! We'd love to do the JMT one day! The Sierra is so epic! Can't wait to share all we've been up to! Thank you for watching! It means a lot to us
Love the episode you two! 💓 Such a cool landscape! 🏔 It looked like a postcard while you guys were biking along the dirt road. And that's so cool that the area was used to film one of the Iron Man movies. Wow! Keep it the adventure!
Great video. If you have only one movie to watch from the Alabama Hills on a boondocking night, how could it not be Tremors? One of the greatest cinematic worm achievements in human history...
If you get to Ukiah, the Mendocino county seat (on 101 about 2.5 hrs north of San Francisco) there is another Schat's Bakery that is much smaller scale, but equally delicious. There are a few Schat's around California - and apparently Carson City and Canada - all founded by offspring of the original baker, who emigrated over to SoCal from Holland in the '50s. We happily consumed many loaves of bread and cookies from them when we lived over the hill in Willits.
Great video! I love that area. Came back from my 2018 trip there with 8 gallery- level photos. I’m planning a return in mid-September this year. Can’t wait!
This was such a fun one! I love the west and old movies, so it was really cool to see Alabama Hills! Now I definitely want to visit someday.😀Looking forward to Sequoia National Park!
Like someone else said “ u guys are glowing when I saw u there saying how happy you were I immediately thought “ last time hubs and I were that happy,, we found out we were pregnant 6 weeks later with our first child 😅”
Awesome video! Going in that area is always an epic trip. They have really used the food stops since I’ve been there last, wow. One thing about going up to the Bristlecone pines is being there in person does not compare watching a video, there is just something special about that area one remembers by being there. Looking forward to the next video.
Another awesome video! Thanks for yet another bucket list destination. Also, thanks for responding to my question regarding the RTX2000! It’s what I’m getting once our van arrives! I see it’s cooling you off still! 👍❤️
We are currently in Alaska following your hints and suggestions we have been here 4 weeks one to go and we just did the (mica) glaciers tour and your story was displayed in their check in room. Keep up the good work a pair of Australians, we have now completed all states and only missed 2 national parks in the USA we visited Pago Pago many years ago
What an epic trip in the eastern sierras you got to experience! It’s probably my fav get away here in CA where I live. I’ve been there many times, tho the bristle cone pines are in the white mts. So much to see and do there. The fish hatchery, manzanar, eastern sierra historical museum, keough hot springs, fossil falls, Whitney portal with the so epic waterfalls right there by the camp store. So many lakes and rivers and trails to explore. For the northern section of the 395 check out devils post pile and rainbow falls in mammoth, June lake loop. You should see some pretty epic waterfalls coming down the mountains, for mono lake check out the visitors center and the south tufa section that gets you up close and personal with those amazing formations. Whoa Nelly Deli is in the gas station at the junction of hwy 120 and not only has gourmet food truck style food but seating with a great view of mono lake. Also check out convict lake and Sabrina lake as well as the town of Bridgeport and the nearby ghost town of Brodie
We’re excited to be out here! We’ve checked out a lot of this already and some is still on our to do list! We aren’t doing all of it on camera, but it’s a wonderland out here! Thanks for the tips!
Can't agree more Go west :) [(Go west) Life is peaceful there, (Go west) In the open air, (Go west) Where the skies are blue (Go west) This is what we're gonna do ]
This is one of my favorite areas to hike in! If you have enough time, I would recommend checking out Big Pine Lakes, Kearsarge Pass, Little Lakes Valley, Ediza & Iceberg Lakes, and Thousand Island Lake. This area is amazing for alpine lakes, although it might be a little too early in the season for a few of these hikes.
Another great video guys! Kathryn the skull rock does look like the one in Joshua Tree. I was literally thinking just that when you said it. I went to JT in 2022 December. I do hope you get a clear sky so you can get some starry night sky shots. It is amazing to watch the sunsets and sunrises. Happy travels and stay safe ♥️
All the food and bakery makes me hungry. I didn't make it north, after seeing My Whitney but definitely want to see the rest of the way to Lake Tahoe one day...
Glad you guys are slowing down. I'm sure you've left the area already, but the Manzanar National Historic Site is really interesting depiction of the Japanese-American internment camp that was there.
Man I wish you could of climbed it, it would of been awesome to see you climb Whitney. I climbed it at 12 and loved it! I still hike but nott like that anymore. Enjoy Cali. I'm a Cali girl.
If you haven't left the eastern sierras yet, make sure you stop by Eastern Sierra Ice Cream Co in Independence. It's one of my favorite places on the 395 and a very special ice cream shop overall.
Love the western US we toured all through there last year. We just got back from Newfoundland and followed your itenerary very closely. Except the 4 day hike in Gros Morne. Thanks for the guidance.
Kathryn, I think you will be surprised how hard it is to function at 14000 ft.. I was at 14800 feet in Lauca National Park (Chile), and it is all you can do to walk, let alone gain elevation. Train hard and then when you think you're ready, train some more.
You should visit Wishon Reservoir, just above Shaver Lake in Central California. The PG&E Helms Project powerhouse is an incredible feat of engineering, and supplies electricity to the entire West Coast! Bass Lake, between Fresno and Yosemite is where they filmed The Great Outdoors, with John Candy. We have lots of exciting hiking and biking trails, and the beauty of Yosemite without the crowds and fees.
Love your channel! I can tell a lot goes into each and every video. For everyday of footage how much time do you spend at a location researching and editing?

- Crowley Lake Stone Columns
- The Restaurant at Convict Lake
- Earthquake Fault near Mammoth Lakes
- Mono Lake South Tufa Area - incredible sunrises
One more multi-day hike to put on your bucket list:
Rae Lakes Loop Trail - get a small sample of the PCT and the John Muir Trail deep in the interior of the Sierras.
Can't wait to see your adventures in one of my favorite areas of this great country!
So much to see and do! We’ve got lots on our to do list! Won’t be able to see it all, but we’ve got some epic stuff planned!
Need to add this to my list of places to visit!😊
Safe travels!!
Great video!! ❤❤
Welcome to California! Hope you'll make your way up to Mt.Shasta area while you're here. Many epic sights - waterfalls, Castle Crags, lava caves, glass mountain, historic logging towns, mountain lakes, and you can drive to the snow.
We won't make it up to Mt. Shasta on this trip, but we filmed a video near there a couple years ago, including Castle Crags. Epic up there!
It means a lot to us
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bakery in Bishop is amazing!!!!!!! so happy you got to go!
Thats so crazy! I just completed Route 66 from Chicagoland to Santa Monica a couple days ago! We both got Cali vacations going on right now! 💓
Wow that's so cool! We'd love to do that drive end to end one day!
@@AdventuresofAplusK so worth it. Especially with the van, take as long as you need...
Awesome video!!! Love the Eastern Sierras
Love the episode you two! 💓 Such a cool landscape! 🏔 It looked like a postcard while you guys were biking along the dirt road. And that's so cool that the area was used to film one of the Iron Man movies. Wow! Keep it the adventure!
It’s so awesome out there! Can’t wait to share more! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Great video. If you have only one movie to watch from the Alabama Hills on a boondocking night, how could it not be Tremors? One of the greatest cinematic worm achievements in human history...
It looks like a good one too. Since it's so famous for western movies we wanted to watch something along those lines
Oh very cool! We don’t plan on going in that direction on this trip, but thanks for sharing that! That’s interesting!
Great video! I love that area. Came back from my 2018 trip there with 8 gallery- level photos. I’m planning a return in mid-September this year. Can’t wait!
Awesome! We still have a lot to share and we'll be back again and again!
Long time watcher of your channel! Keep up the good work!
Thank you!
This was such a fun one! I love the west and old movies, so it was really cool to see Alabama Hills! Now I definitely want to visit someday.😀Looking forward to Sequoia National Park!
Seeing all the history around us on top of the nature was a nice treat! We had a ton of fun at Sequoia! Can't wait to share!
Thank you for always great videos. I really want to visit someday 395. I am enjoying watching it in Korea too.
Awesome! We hope to visit Korea one day! Thanks for watching!
Like someone else said “ u guys are glowing
when I saw u there saying how happy you were I immediately thought
“ last time hubs and I were that happy,, we found out we were pregnant 6 weeks later with our first child 😅”
beautiful sceneries ,with mouth watering barbecue ,pastries hmmm......love it.
Absolutely Beautiful ❤️ love it!! Never been out West but definitely want to go oneday 😊
Awesome video! Going in that area is always an epic trip. They have really used the food stops since I’ve been there last, wow. One thing about going up to the Bristlecone pines is being there in person does not compare watching a video, there is just something special about that area one remembers by being there. Looking forward to the next video.
Totally agree! You have to see the bristlecone pines in person to truly grasp them! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Another area I want to visit. Hey guys, been a minute. Life is crazy and busy. Wow, almost 200k. So worthy! Hi Kona❤
Hey Allison! Thank you for saying hi and watching! Kona says hello! 😊
Another awesome video! Thanks for yet another bucket list destination. Also, thanks for responding to my question regarding the RTX2000! It’s what I’m getting once our van arrives! I see it’s cooling you off still! 👍❤️
The AC works great! Very happy with it! Let us know if you have any other questions!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Thank you!👍
Holy cow that bakery…. Omg!!! Now I wanna try some.
How cool! Good on you guys! Safe travels and thanks for watching!
Amazing always wanted to visit there
Can't agree more Go west :) [(Go west) Life is peaceful there, (Go west) In the open air, (Go west) Where the skies are blue
(Go west) This is what we're gonna do ]
Welcome to the best part of California - US395!! :)
Some of those are definitely on our list! We're excited to check it out!
Hey look, my hometown !
Love the trees
Your videos are fantastic; I’m a huge fan! I hope to meet you both someday. We followed your recommendations while in Palm Springs. Thank you!
We’re glad to hear that! Thank you and thanks for watching! If you see us out and about one day, say hi!
That looked like a very interesting stop!
Man I wish you could of climbed it, it would of been awesome to see you climb Whitney. I climbed it at 12 and loved it! I still hike but nott like that anymore.
Enjoy Cali. I'm a Cali girl.
At 12 wow! We will definitely be back for Whitney!
If you haven't left the eastern sierras yet, make sure you stop by Eastern Sierra Ice Cream Co in Independence. It's one of my favorite places on the 395 and a very special ice cream shop overall.
Thanks for the tip!
thanks A+K
You guys should’ve hiked to Lone Pine Lake Via the Whitney trail ..You don’t need a permit &you get a sample of the Whitney trail
So many things to see so little time 😊 next time
Just returned from HW 395 roadtrip! Mammoth Lakes were our favorites! Saw a bear cub on a street at Mammoth West Condos :)
Awesome! It’s one of our favorites as well!
Love the western US we toured all through there last year. We just got back from Newfoundland and followed your itenerary very closely. Except the 4 day hike in Gros Morne. Thanks for the guidance.
That's so awesome to hear! Newfoundland is one of our favorite places ever and we're glad we could share it!
Don’t forget to add in the altitude, can take your breath away, even for people in good shape
Most definitely!
Kathryn, I think you will be surprised how hard it is to function at 14000 ft.. I was at 14800 feet in Lauca National Park (Chile), and it is all you can do to walk, let alone gain elevation. Train hard and then when you think you're ready, train some more.
Good tips! Thank you!
It does look pretty awesome! I'm not sure we'll make it out there, but we'll save it for a future visit! Thanks!
Eastern California Museum in Independence. Worth a visit.
It does look interesting! Thanks!
Love your channel! I can tell a lot goes into each and every video. For everyday of footage how much time do you spend at a location researching and editing?
Thanks! We've never added it up, but we do many hours of research for each video. 10-20 per maybe? Editing is another 10-20! Thank you for watching!
