- Hello! I'm Iain Lampert. I won California's Impromptu Speaking state championship in 2010. I made this video to help my students understand high school Impromptu.
After every section of this speech, I'll give a critique of what I think did and didn't work. I hope that any Impromptuers out there find the critiques useful. Tell me what you think below!
I'm competing in Impromptu for the first time ever tomorrow in an open tournament and our speech and debate team has barely helped me learn how Impromptu even works, so this was such a big help! Do you have any other videos that might be good for someone who's new to Impromptu to watch?
I did impromptu in high school, and now im doing it in college. Im looking through youtube for good impromptu speeches and I really like this one. Nice job man, and thank you for pointing out all the details for us like that
This video has been an inspiration to me in my impromptu pursuits the last few years!
My first time doing impromptu will be this weekend. This video helped me understand it so much more, thank you! I'm also sharing this with my fellow novice impromptuers if you don't mind :)
GREAT video and speech! I really appreciate it, it's inspired me to try to incorporate more humor into my impromptu speeches.
Thank you so much for critiquing yourself. I coach a small speech team and we used your presentation last year and just went over it again today. My kids learned a lot from this.
This was actually very helpful, I have a novice impromptu competition in about 2 hours and this helped me with possible formatting and practicing. I'm still very nervous and I don't know how good I will be, but I'm also excited now that I know what I'm supposed to do!
This is our homework assignment in Impromtu and I think you did very well.
Considering where you coach I can see why ILead has such solid competitors. Great video!
I have a class in Public Speaking. Your video helped me the most from the 10-12 I watched. The way you added in the critiques (giving tips on how to prepare as well as examples of what you did effectively and what challenges you had) made your experience something I learned from and can apply to my own speeches. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Thank YOU for taking the time to write down your thoughts about it! I appreciate it!
Thank you, David! I'm going to post some more videos shortly. Do you have any requests? Anything that could serve as good supplemental material?
Sounds like the Wolf of Wall Street educating me on impromptu speeches.
Lol facts
Thank you sooooo much for the wonderful advice and pointers! I was a genius and decided to do both original oratory AND impromptu at my first speech tournament .... which is tomorrow... and now I'm terrified and the nerves are eating me alive! Are there any tips that you have to help me calm my nerves before the event?
and to think I was marked a 7 for using pop culture references Nice Speech great confidence. THAT'S WHAT GETS YOU THE 1!!!
This is so Helpful!
thank you for the video I will be competing soon and this helped me very much
This helped me so much!! First Year of debate ONLINE I'm screwed but wish me luck
Great video! Thanks!
Not too helpful if the tone of the competition is a hella serious one... but the tips I got from this PRICELESS!
I'm having trouble creating coherent speeches with concrete nouns. Do you have any suggestions?
1) What does this concrete noun DO?
2) How is it unique at doing that thing, when you compare it to similar nouns (how is a pencil different from a pen)?
3) What does this unique action/function represent? Call that thing the [noun] mentality.
4) What three beliefs or individuals or events similarly represent that mentality? Continually reference the concrete noun in question to prove that you're being topical.
thank you.
Just asking, was this an actual speech you gave at states? o.o
Yes! This was the first speech given in that year's state final round.
I understand why understand and analyze were filler words but what should be used instead? thanks for this great video!
+Josie Higgins Generally, it's better to use fewer sentences. You can slow down and be more to the point, cutting down the little filler "crutch phrases" altogether.
thanks!
I was once kid but now I'm big
UUHH
