Hey! I'm the guy that designed the low-poly Pikachu (aka the toy)!
I really like seeing some of my early designs used as examples of (almost) useless models. For years I believed that, but some time ago I found out that those models got hundreds of kids out there interested in 3D printing and digital fabrication. As you show in the video, 3D printing toys is just one of the thousands of things you can do with this technology, and that's really inspiring. I'll be showing this video to my students from now on!

Hi, I just wanted you to know that your design is also used by me in testing my 3D library on STM32 microcontroller - mostly because it's low poly and that makes not too much triangles to draw. That was the first thing on Thingiverse that came up when I searched for "low poly" models.
Here is how it looks: ruclips.net/video/TDCbDaliX00/видео.html

I don't find that optimal tho, I like the idea of kids making their own toys but with real tools instead of digital ones. Honestly the process of 3d printing is kinda boring and is much less challenging and interactive than other things, but it's definitely safer(even safer than legos lmao).
Sorry if I sound cynic, I do appreciate the way people have been pushing this technology to it's limit and it just gets better and better

I have a background in 3d modelling. Bought my first 3d printer in May this year. I now have a VERY successful 3d printing business. So yes, it's useful :) Plus is stupidly fun to figure out exactly what you can print with no supports (it's a challenge I have given myself) and ways to use the printer that others wouldn't normally consider. I am really enjoying watching you use your 3d printer for your various projects. It's wonderful to watch traditional woodworking combined with a 'new' technolgy.

This is the kind of use for which 3D printing was designed, and it's the kind of use I can respect. I work at a school running the shop. However, I don't run the 3d printing area, and I'm so glad I don't, because all it gets used for is printing little figures and toys from Thingiverse. That kind of use of 3d printing has always struck me as similar to downloading someone's amazing Photoshop project, printing it on a color printer, and then taking the credit for making it.

As someone who owns 2 3d printers I have actually gone back and fourth on this with myself. I used to think it wasn't as useful but now days that I can design functional prints I have to say yes. No is it needed to live or make life way better? No. But the amount of small things I have printed that help me out day to day are kinda surprising. The thing I use the most is a simple wallet/keyholder I designed thats screwed to the side of my dresser and it works great. I also have an ecig that has the charge port on the bottom of it and thats a total pain since you'd have to lay it on its side to charge and leak eliquid everywhere so I got a right angle usb cable and made a cradle and it works great. There are tons of these little things around my house and office that make life a bit easier.

I think your channel is going to explode if it isn't already. I've very jealous of your workshop. I wonder what Adam Savage would say because he is more old school and doesn't have much 3D printing going on. I think his generation just missed out. His workshop is cluttered with movie props and is a tight space that requires Adam's clever ideas to utilise effectively. You seem to have space galore. I would love to spend a day or two in your workshop.

Back in the "bad old days," many objects were cast or vacuum formed to models made by "pattern makers.' They mostly used simple hand tools. Now the "model" is designed with computer graphics and the parameters are sent to a computer driven milling machine (3,4,5? axes) or your 3D printer.

3D printing in itself can indeed be highly useful, but as someone who's diving into it since half a year I might add that it opens up a whole world on its own with different materials, their mechanical properties, slicer settings, (manual) bed leveling and not to speak of fixing problems. At least valid for most entry level printers up to €500. Might (and should) be a different thing for the 4-digit priced Ultimakers. Nonetheless I reckon these skills on how to operate a printer similarly mandatory for the times ahead like buying a PC back in the 80/90s. Good content nonetheless, thanks Alex.

I grew up with a father who was an aircraft engine machine tool operator and later spent decades at a company that sold industrial plastics and non-ferrous metals. Put those two with a few of our shared hobbies and I absorbed a good foundation on materials suitable for a given application. He's been gone 30 years yet it is coming in handy again with 3D printing since I prefer to only make reliable functional small parts.
My weak spot is learning proper 3D CAD. I don't put in the time required because I self diagnosed that I have the hobby form of ADD.

I use 3d printing for a high variety of applications
designing custom pieces mainly, most of which I later cast to aluminum-low carbon steel
prototyping puzzles is so great too, it is even great for printing little toys
it is one of the greatest tools for prototyping, and since my ender 3 with all upgrades and 2 Kilograms of filament costed 250 euros, the investment payed for itself in a couple of month (not to say a couple of weeks)
I literally started printing the same day I got it, very easy, lots of sources and data available, very little trouble, so this question is a no brainer, a 3d printer and 3d printing are incredibly useful

Hey, i know i'm a bit late but those Y splitters are a really big hazard.
Wood dust is very explosive especially while suspended in the air - f.e. during pneumatic transport. Those ducts have to be grounded as even a little spark can set the whole installation on fire and blow the whole shop up and small particles rubbing against each other tend to generate a lot of static. That's why in professional setup plastic ducts have metal wires in them that are connected to the rest of installation. Make sure to connect all the metal parts of the installation with appropiate wires while using these splitters.

You should check the mold in the top corner above your boxes. You can see it in the 11:35 shot.

You said it. I have no idea why anyone without any 3d modelling skills would ever buy a 3d printer. It's sort of like getting a ink jet printer without knowing how to type and you're stuck printing out other peoples documents.

I bought my own 3D printer back in May after having tested and played with one at work. I use it both for fun and practical use and I'm lightly touching on some modeling. It's a ton of fun and for sure worth it if you're interested and can find uses for it :D

Yes,I've never understood 3d printer owners that can't model parts by themselves. It's handy for so many things. Replacement parts, jigs, tools etc.

I would love to see a quick breakdown of the costs to print parts - forget about modelling time, but how much filament is needed for a small parts box vs what do they cost? Or the drawer handles, or the cost to print a router template vs the cost of the 1/2" baltic birch plywood, etc! I would also love to see the benefits of this printer vs a resin one, especially as it pertains to workshop stuff!
Side note, a 3D printer would make terrific inserts for systainers!

In order for 3d printers to be useful, u gotta know or even have time to invest in model makin urself. Cant rely on thingiverse 24/7

Hi Alex, i concurr with several comments it would be nice if you could make another video going into other details of 3d printing. Could you go into the cost side of things a bit? For example which kind of fillament did you use on the boxes and how many small boxes did you create with one role (size?price?) of fillament? Or on large parts for the camera lift. If i see one of the bigger parts i am like: oh my ... that looks as if one part ate one role of fillament as it has to be pretty sturdy.

Another great video! I can't remember if you've mentioned this, but what's the primary form of filament that you use? PLA, ABS, PETG etc? Looking forward to your next project!

    • @Gromic2k
      @Gromic2k 4 года назад +1

He said earlier that he (currently) only uses PLA.
I personally don't think PLA is a good material if you need stuff that's used for parts that need to withstand force. PLA bends when subjected to permanent pressure. I think he should switch to ASA (it's the "successor" of ABS). Or at least PET-G

Hi! Can you talk about filament types, nozzle widths and printer settings that you use to balance strength and time spent on all these parts. Do you have one set of settings you use for everything? Thanks!

I'm trying to learn Fusion 360 and it feels like starting over with excel. You're right though, just downloading files from thingaverse is great, but I'm hitting the limits of that usefulness. I was sad to find out that it'll only be free for a year, but I figure if I can learn to rudimentarily operate fusion, then it shouldn't be too hard to transition to another free option.
