  • "I feel very proud of the years I have served here, the people I met, the sounds and colors, the inspiration I received here to work even harder to promote Vietnam and Israel". Meirav Eilon Shahar the Ambassador of State of Israel to Vietnam shares her story of why she became a diplomat. Meirav Eilon Shahar assumed the position of Ambassador of State of Israel to Vietnam in August 2012.
Prior to this mission, she directed the Department for United Nations Political Affairs in Jerusalem between 2009 and July 2010.
Joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995, Meirav has represented Israel in a number of different capacities. Until summer 2009, Meirav Eilon Shahar served as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations.
Previously, Mrs. Shahar served as Consul for Communications and Public Affairs at the Consulate General of Israel in Los Angeles from 2000 to 2002. There, she directed public, media and academic affairs in the southwestern United States. She also served as Second Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Israel in Nairobi, Kenya between 1997 and 2000. In this capacity, she oversaw all aspects of bilateral relations between Israel and six east African countries.
Meirav is married to Ram and they have 3 children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    • @elsab3438

hello! Mun stands for model united Nations, you have to represent a country ,it's interest and political stance in a fake un debate where you and other participants who each represent a country will debate on a topical issue(ex: renewable energy and development) ,write and debate resolutions written by the participants, make amendments to those resolutions, vote...to finally be able to reach consensus on a final resolution that 'll constitute the end goal . Throughout you have to ensure that the country you're representing's interests are served to make the most out of the situation individually while also making sure to find somutions that could be applied to a global scale ( ex:is it better to tax the oil importators or the exportators?, If every country has to donate a percentage of their PIB to a monetary fund for sustainable development...what if your country has too high of a national debt? Should the resolution hold a special clause in this case?)
It's very research-heavy on your part as you have to know everything your country has done on the subject +who your allies are to be able to negotiate with them or even lobby to ensure your interest are best served by the resolution adopted
It's an incredibly rich experience that i recommend trying if you're interested in international relations and diplomacy or global politics
Often schools organize some , i also know that certain clubs or associations do so as well
I hope it was helpful, Personally it has confirmed my deep rooted interest in the diplomatic field !I took part last year as a Lebanese negotiator on renewable energy and will represent an asiatic country this time on women's rights.(you don't pick your country ,but the organisators assign you your ''state'' either randomly or, if you plan on studying certain geographical areas in the future , they'll assign you something accordingly
I Hope you have a great day!

Shalom, Meirav--from Israel. I came here in 1964, after high school, to volunteer in a kibbutz for a year. (Gesher Haziv)--went back to study and returned in 1969 with my Israeli husband. A good talk. (Sorry, your English is very good, but just one repeated mistake makes me cringe: should be: ''I was brought up as.... or in....''. Growing is something a little different.) Good job. Kol hakavod, and b'hatzlacha.
