In today's video we will test out the Tesla's steering wheel magnetic weight clamp to see if it actually prevents the auto pilot warning from popping up.
Very occasionally on long trips I've had to reset it. Just remove the weight (on the left side), wait until it starts bugging you, then pull the wheel to the right side to remove the nag. Let it start bugging you again, and clip the weight on the left again. You're good to go.
I happen to be a fellow scientist. I'd like to conduct further research and experiments on this. How can a well-intentioned scientist like myself go about acquiring such a device, and how much should I expect to pay?
I know of someone who stuck a bunch of little square wheel weights to the bac of their steering wheel - and they also, do not recommend it, but in the name of science, they have about 40,000 hands-free miles.
I use it in my X all the time…works flawlessly. It’s actually a very basic defeat mechanism. You hang a water bottle or anything to the wheel. The just needs to detect resistance.
@@llednur I wound up rebooting the car, and always park with the wheel turned so that the weight is vertical - so that it won't be noticed if the system zeros itself. Problem solved!
What's the difference? Having your hands on the steering wheel or the weight? As long as you're watching the road, what's the difference? I like the idea of hands free so I can relax while I travel.
The weights no longer work because they only weigh 1 lb. now you need 2 lbs and I think you need to set the wheel to comfort. A nice wrist weight works the best honestly. These things scratch your wheel up. I think Tesla may be taking into account any additional weight on the wheel before a drive to know if you leave one of these things on.
no longer works, if you have this on you will eventually get a red warning to take control of the vehicle and if you try to re-engage autopilot it will tell you that autopilot is blocked because you ignored warnings.
Does this still work on software version 2022.24.5 (latest update)? Someone on Reddit said it didn't but they may have just been salty about the device.
@@traviswieser SORRY FOR LATE. Accutually i cant switch the side cause the shape of two side of wheel are different. i bought for the right side, it's unable to fit the left.
@@traviswieser and i had try 2 more weeks. i think i found the problem.. it's might be some kind of wheel auto calibration algorithm in these new updates. when the weight not work, just manually drive for about 2 days, and it might work again(about for 5-6 days and needs to be calibrate again)..
and i found that when TESLA trying to calibrate the steering wheel, it would slightly turning the wheel left and right continuously and rhythmically during this trip. and AP might not work if you only force it on one side (EX. one hand drive during AP)...
They work terrific. Been using one for years now. I can't believe all the negativity toward the use of one. Makes sense though, as todays society has never heard of personal responsibility. I guess another way of identifying the leftists among us.
I am buying one so I can participate on this experiment. Thank you.
@Smith Rukami I haven’t been on a long enough trip to try it, but thanks for the warning.
still works!
Lol 😆 🤣
Does it still work
Where can I buy this weight?

I’ll try it
What causes you to reset?
So in other words, the exact same thing I do WITHOUT this illegal device!! SMH

eBay, less than $30

My good sir I don't even own a Tesla but I will buy one just to test and debunk these findings. I will be the judge of that. 😂
Don't you mean.....how would your "friend" expect to pay?
😂😂 just got my scientist certification myself as well.
I believe further research is needed and I got you bro.
I want to try this science experiment for myself
It will pull whatever side you have it on, but not like an uncontrollable amount.
I know of someone who stuck a bunch of little square wheel weights to the bac of their steering wheel - and they also, do not recommend it, but in the name of science, they have about 40,000 hands-free miles.
Yes, for "science". Lol
Great vid! 👍

Does it void warranty or insurance?
So I think i will also do an experiment. Going to test if this works on the long term for lets say 150.000 miles in total
Mine quit working! A bit more weight solves the problem. Looks like they turned up the threshold.
How much weight is it looking for?
@@llednur I wound up rebooting the car, and always park with the wheel turned so that the weight is vertical - so that it won't be noticed if the system zeros itself. Problem solved!

The difference is I don’t want my hand on the wheel. This negates the need.
I too will test this in the name of science.

Link to where these can be purchased?
Nice. Which autopilot do you have?
Good video thanks
What's the version of Autopilot you tried it on?
Does this work with TM3 Highland?
Will the wheel pull to the right slightly without it on autopilot?
Yes
Where I can buy this weight?
Were could i find these?
I tried on left handside and it didnt work,. Only works on right hand side
Do you only put it on the when about to use auto pilot? Have you seen anything happen to the wheel alignment
Just turn off fsd
You know a water bottle works even better 😅
Good Video
Does this work on model y? Where can I buy? Do you need it if you have full self driving?
just autopilot works
I ordered mine , can’t wait for it to arrive
Did it work?
@@Piminther yes, works perfectly.
Some good science work here. Thanks.
@@WFF1191 Where did you order it from
Don't try to think your smart. Just answer the simple question. WHAT DOES A TESLA WEIGHT. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.
I would definitely get this lol
It’s the weight, nothing to do with magnets. You hold the steering wheel like a jabroni, and an oversized watch? What is this 2004?
no longer works, if you have this on you will eventually get a red warning to take control of the vehicle and if you try to re-engage autopilot it will tell you that autopilot is blocked because you ignored warnings.
Yep...the latest software update detects that you have a weight on the steering wheel.
@@DatKid30 just turn off FSD
@@youngchirp12 I don't have FSD.
