I 1000% agree. The minute I saw them, I said something is off. I don't want bonded leather unless I'm paying bonded leather prices. Coachtopia was a joke to me. Why would I pay $300 for a recycled leather bag when I can take that money and use it to buy a full- or top-grain leather retail bag? I also feel like while cute, I could buy a vintage Soho and paint the leather bits for a lot less.
Vintage Sohos are 100% the way to go! And they seem to be on the lower end of prices when it comes to the Coach second hand market. I have a feeling that will change in the future though 😍
If you like the look you can find a vintage preloved Soho style 9247 pretty cheaply and in good condition. I just ordered a black leather 9247 made in 2004 - it should arrive tomorrow and I'm excited because it is pristine looking. And it cost 50 USD. I love vintage Coach quality and you won't find me buying bonded leather.
Thank you for sharing this! I saw the Soho design in signature jacquard and was thirsting hard. But knowing that it’s recycled leather, an option that’s not the most enviro friendly…and with that price point, is not the business and it is dissuading me from wanting it. Buying preloved soho (which I have been doing) is the way to go!

I do not have any older Soho bags but I do have an old Soho wristlet that I never use anymore but cannot part with it as I love that signature Soho hardware so much. I think I am going to need to hunt down a vintage Soho bag. That is the greenest way after all!

I agree. Bonded leather with the plastic coating leather look on top, is not the same. Often it smells like chemicals too. I've bought bags that smelled like plastic but they were under 30 and I knewn that is what it was and I lthought the bag was cute and I let it take a beating because it was plastic leather in my mind, and at different ages we all have varying budgets. sooooo coach should tell everyone hey its bonded leather coated over and price it accordingly. I totally agree with you about their lack of transparency and pricing. Recycled leather sounds so new and noble when bonded leather has been for at least 50 years and was always the bargain "genuine leather" bag. That hey fit my little kid budget at the time, so it has its place.
It looses the luxurious feel that comes with real leather, and is just less pleasant to man handle, love and smell. I dont want to pick up a bonded leather bag, hug it and smell it, it doesnt smell good nor would it feel the greatest, comparatively speaking. Bonded leather definitely has its uses and markets, but not like this! 😬😬

I have the vintage version of this bag in excellent condition and the leather is so thick and so much nicer than the leather used now. I added a chain to it to hang across the front of the bag. Love it. This new stuff, not so much. Enjoyed!😊💚
I’m gonna stick with my old coach bags. The only newer bags I have are a pillow tabby and a swinger bag. Bonded or “recycled” leather is a no-no for me

But contributing to the “new” coach items especially the ones made from plastic/jelly and bonded leather pieces is just telling coach to make more of them.. coach is a leather goods company and ever since 2020 they have been straying further and further away from leather.. we need to put our money where our mouths are and just buy the quality full leather pieces if that’s what we want to see in stores. The “new” stuff is cute but $200 plus for plastic/bonded leather/canvas/fabric is just not ok.. especially when you can get vintage pieces made of those materials or better for way cheaper on the preloved market…

They cut the siluete of a rogue from a cow hide and, pieces of leathers from a size that would not be big enough for a bag, are left over, they would go to waste. This is the reason why the bags are small, or they are composed of different small pieces of lesther. Have someone really atte. Pted to directly contact coach and ask what stands behind the world recycled leather?? They also have regenerative Glovetanned Leather, and some people are getting Confused about this terminology, that has nothing to see with bonded or even recycled leather.
No and no. The “Coachtopia Leather TM” is 10000% BONDED leather. It takes some of those leather scraps, or leather dust, maybe left over tiny pieces, that get ground up and put onto a sheet of paper. That IS what recycled leather is. Recycled is bonded. Its been around for quite awhile now. Most people at Coach don’t know what Coachtopia is really made of. They mostly believe what you do, that they are taking these pieces and crafting from them. When in reality, anything using “Coachtopia Leather TM” is using bonded leather. Its all marketing. Regenerative leather is just sustainable leather practices. I would look into the leather guild certificates, such as gold, silver etc. as those are related to Regenerative leathers. Ill again state that the bags used from UPCRAFTED leather, do have PIECES, such as the checkered pattern sewn together, is real cowhide pieces left from bags. But thats about it. All of those up-crafted Coachtopia bags contain Coachtopia Leather TM.

Bonded leather is SOOOOOOOO cheap to produce 😭😭 If I were to take a guess, the textile jacquard is way more expensive to make. But thats just my educated guess 🧐 and theyre a HUGE weakness for me as well, so this saves me quite a bit of money but Im BITTER BITTER about it 😂🙈
