Iain Lee and Justin Dealey experience homophobic abuse

  • Iain Lee tries a simple experiment to see if the public have a problem with people being openly gay.
You might have heard 23 year-old Nick telling Iain how humiliated he felt when he was subjected to a torrent of homophobic abuse by a woman who followed him off the train.
What really shocked Iain was when Nick went on to say he's used to being insulted by strangers offended by him holding hands with his boyfriend in public...not kissing, smooching or cuddling...just holding hands.
So we decided to conduct a little experiment...

I find it very strange how people don't like Homosexuality "being shoved in their faces" yet you can't leave the house without seeing hetrosexuality, be that in the form of real life couples or advertisements etc. How is two people of the same sex holding hands any more "in your face" than a straight couple kissing, or a billboard of a guy and a girl draped all over each other. Bigot's have a really odd mindset.

They have a knack for obfuscation don't they? Like you say, their problem is really not the "in your face part", but the "gay" part. They're just too weak to admit it to someone else up front.

'He doesn't obviously agree with homosexuality. It's got a stigma. He's a teenage boy.'
This is bullshit. I'm a teenager, and I fully support everyone belonging to the LGBT community.
It's nothing to do with age. It's to do with someone's ideologies and morals. There's no excuse for Homophobia.
I regularly hang out with my best friend and his boyfriend, and if I see anyone looking at them in disgust, I stare right back at them until they start feeling uncomfortable and stop staring. If they were a heterosexual couple, no one would glance twice.

I grew up in an era and area where it was considered disgusting by pretty much everyone. This was Leeds in the 70's and 80's. It is still a very narrow minded place although I rarely return now. Then there was one gay bar and it had boarded up windows and so forth. so I was raised and taught by everyone around me it was the worst possible thing. I learned this was not true over the years having moved to London and worked with people who are gay and used my own judgement. So I can understand people who have been brainwashed about it. It is just like people are brainwashed about religion and hate others because of that. If you tell kids something and everyone tells them it they grow up believing it.

why are people shocked that this still exists? Im 19 and I grew up in an area where homophobia still exists. If you were gay in my school you be crucified so the notion that Homophobia comes from the older generation where it wasn't acceptable in that era is a bit naiive, a LOT of young people still cant come to terms of men liking men or women liking women

    • @ealing456
      @ealing456 9 лет назад

I grew up in an area where homophobia was still prevalent - when I started secondary school it was the talk of the year group when so and so came out as gay - lots of frowning and looking down upon said individual. By the end of secondary school, there were numerous people identifying as gay, and few people had any issue with it - most were LGBT supportive.
Now, is that a sociological change within that community, or an age-related change? I wonder if Year 7s and year 8s are still as homophobic in the community where I grew up?

All these people who are against homosexuality never seem to get much further in their arguments than just saying 'it's wrong. it's wrong.'
WHY is it wrong, and WHY do you think you feel that way? It doesn't take much capacity to really ask yourself these questions and realise how stupid it all sounds as you try to fish around for reasons. Beyond religion, there is no excuse for homophobia, and I can absolutely guarantee that very few of these people who use 'God' as an excuse for homophobia wouldn't think twice about subjects like sex before marriage and so on.

King Without A Crown I'm not even gay. Lol You think I'm gay for defending gay people? Do you really generalize to this extent? Why does people's sexuality matter to you? Does it affect your life?
I don't understand where you got the idea that ALL gay people behave the same, it's like you don't understand that sexuality does not necessarily define you as a person unless you choose it to do so. And believe me not all gay people make it their whole personality and go on and make out with all the guys in your parking lot. Some people have self respect and some don't and sexuality has nothing to do with that.
Speaking of self respect you just admitted to fingering your gf infront of your grandma. That's bad wouldn't you agree? Now shouldn't we agree that straight people can also be disgusting?

    • @kingwithoutacrown1
      @kingwithoutacrown1 9 лет назад +2

Geesle Well dear Sir i fully agree. I wrote it in another comment, i have no problem at all with homosexuals who behave like normal creatures. My dislike is for the "show-off-gays" who love to provoke the average daddy and mummy with their attitude and then pretend to be devastated when they earn disapproval.
And for that reason i brought the example with my girlfriend. I was 16 then, an age which a boy thinks that it's cool and special to do such things. I wouldn't do that nowadays, not because i'm old and conservative now, but out of respect for the rest around me.
Bottom line: It's a matter of the right or wrong behaviour , not a straight or gay thing.
But since gay people are not the norm (no matter if you like it or not they are a minority which doesn't get approval everywhere and from everyone) they have some reasons more to be a bit discrete and low profile.
Or if they don't wanna be like that and behave like everybody likes to watch scenes from their life, then they shouldn't be surprised if they earn looks.
Last but not least: Most of the reactions from gay people here show me e thing ---> Gays would love to be the new straight, they think with absolutism and no understanding for the "other side". Another proof that it's in the human nature to want to supress the others ;-)

Also, nobody is making you be gay. You have every right to be straight. Just like other people have every right to be homosexual. That's what I don't understand about homophobes. Like, how is me being homosexual affecting your life? If you can have a heterosexual relationship, I can have a homosexual relationship. Get over it.

One kind of thinks with time this sort of thing is diminishing, and I guess it is, but far too slowly. People hold so many values which are contrary to the displayed xenophobia that shows that they don't really understands whence those values came. Philosophers / academics / intellectuals have long since paved the way for our human rights - and yet an extreme majority remain ignorant of there groundings.
I'm saying - TEACH PHILOSOPHY from primary / kindergarten. Teach WHY right is not wrong through thought experiment and actual experiment.
There was a lady who once subjected her children, by splitting the class, to superficial mild discrimination to make them understand the arbitrariness of racism / general bigoted positions. I think this is illustrative of the possibilities.

So in reality, if you think about it he's the one who was feeling incredibly insecure about social change. But as for the presenters shock reactions, you have to be gay to get it, well I think so anyway. This is nothing new for the LGBT community.

I've heard plenty of gay people say they find the idea of straight sex disgusting, straight couples kissing disgusting and so on. It's not necessarily homophobia (or heterophobia in reverse) but if you are not attracted to a member of the same sex, it can be disconcerting to see members of the same sex engaged in sexual or affectionate acts, just as it can be disconcerting to see hetero couples engaging in sexual or affectionate acts if you are not attracted to members of the opposite sex.
As the woman said, people might look because it's not something you often see, it doesn't necessarily have a negative connotation. I recall one of my teachers at school saying that the first time he saw a black person he couldn't help but stare simply because it was different and he was curious. He didn't harbour any negative feelings toward the person. Seeing things that are contrary to the norm are, in a word, fascinating.
Additionally, homophobia is a long, long held feeling in many, many cultures. It's not going to disappear within one generation. These things take time, and they are getting better. You have more support for homosexual rights today than you ever would have seen even 40 years ago.

There needs to be better education regarding the LGBT community in schools. As a 23 year-old LGBT person, I was never taught anything about LGBT issues at school, or by my family. Not one thing. It was just ignored. I daresay a student wouldn't even be properly punished for calling someone "gay" as an insult. It's not good enough. There are too many parents who think that it is wrong to tell their children about the LGBT community, which is why quite a few people grow up thinking it is wrong.

Like the boy in this video. I am 16 years old. Though I am not gay myself, many people when I was at school suspected me to be gay due to the way I was ( I wore skinny jeans/hairspray, did theatre and also hung out with girls instead of lads) Being the political kid I was at school (and still am) I always had an opinion which was commonly left-wing so I was very much in favour of same-sex marriage. But a lot of the lads at school were giving derogatory names to me such as 'faggot' telling me that it was wrong and weird because they all commit sodomy and it got worse when I stood up for the one kid in our year who had the balls to come out to such a homophobic year. What baffles me is that we're suppose to be the generation that is meant to open to every race/religion/gender/sexuality etc. We're taught at school to be tolerant of those who are different and to embrace any differences we have, despite all of this, kids still continue to degrade others for their sexuality. Truth be told this really use to get under my skin, watching those kids with a narrow mindset degrading anyone who has it in them to tell the kids that will belittle them they are gay. However I still remember on results day opening my results with a grin on my face and seeing the same on the kid and watching the kids who degraded everybodys faced as they read they'd failed. so where are we all now a year later? well I'm at college in the hope of one day being a graphic designer or an MP, I also have a part time job and do some acting on the side, that boy who I stood up for is hoping to become a doctor one day. Due to our college and another college being so close, I still talk to some kids who I went to school with and found out what some of the kids who were ass's to us at school are, well they're failing their level-one btec PE, have been kicked out, doing heavy drugs and one is going to be a dad. and tbh when kids leave school, there's a huge leap of growing up for most kids our age, those who remain the same level of braindead as they did at school will be the ones who will be at the bottom of society, truth be told that kid who said homosexuality is wrong is probably as much of a dingbat as the kids who picked on me at school.

You see, comments like this make me angry. Yes, we have freedom of speech, and yes it is very essential. However, using that as an excuse to say something ignorant is just abusing your rights. For example, all of the time in my high school, there are people skipping class. When asked by a teacher why they aren't in class, they respond with, "I know my rights," and ignore the teacher. So many people would kill to go to school, yet there are people abusing their rights for a better education. This is just like the freedom of speech example. Some people don't have freedom of speech, and some people in the world are wasting it on saying ignorant and abusive words.

The kid did publicly express disgust, which is something that a heterosexual couple wouldn't have experienced. They did berate him a bit though, and I'm gay, but I still thought they should have just left him alone. The point of the video was to demonstrate that holding hands as a gay couple was likely to elicit scorn, and it did, but arguing with a kid that sneers at them didn't aid their video any.
I've been called a fag for holding a guy's hand in public (In a relatively liberal college town), and I definitely think that people shouldn't have to hide who they are. But I've never chased someone down to push a political opinion on them.
The problem is that people think it's different when it's their political opinion they're pushing; we make exceptions of ourselves. I get really annoying when pro-lifers decide to run down everyone who passes them on campus and shove their opinions at them, but they probably think they're saints for doing it.
Just because it's a liberal opinion being pushed doesn't mean it's ok to confront someone who's not looking for a debate. If you want to argue a political opinion, do so with someone who wants to argue with you. I don't agree with the kid's aggression, but neither do I condone theirs.

***** Ok but seriously now what exactly did they expect ?! I mean this seriously even i left some ...nasty comments here ;-). You know how the world is. Why trying to force things ? If i were gay i would live my life and trying not to provoke the average people. Homosexuality existed even in the archaic years, but especially in the last decade you people are behaving like salafists for fuck sake. Why you're not happy with the fact that almost nobody wants to harm you (like in past decades) and demand even ...now really what the fuck you demand exactly ? To be loved from everybody ? To be admired like you are special people ? You are not special , you just have a different sexual preference. You can't force anybody to like you with a diagnosis like "homophobia", I would like to shag Scarlett Johansson, i not so sure that she has this intention, so should i call her phobic about my person ? I tell you something (and i mean it with no irony), at the end of the day you will lose your ...gayish essence and became like polemic politicians. Does it worth it ? Pardonne-moi about eventual spelling mistakes , it's not a matter of IQ, it's just that English is just my third language (so this destroys the picture of an illiterate homophobic hater hahaha ;-))

      @kingwithoutacrown1 9 лет назад

***** Jesus Christ how old are you ? Where are you living in cloud cuckoo land ? Scarlett wouldn't spit in my face ? (maybe not literally but for sure metaphorically and that is worse ). What the fuck do you think that only you feel racism (or social racism) ?! That's the way world is amigo, stop being a crybaby and behave like a man (sorry baout that but you now how it's meant ;-D) If you're looking for racism hidden behind every word you can bet that you'll find some. Don't you understand that you just fuck your mind up ?! (Dude i mean that straight from my heart, like i'm talking to a friend !) It's the way people are, no matter if you gay or straight. If they found out that you're sensitive they will use any chance to hurt you. It's cruel but that's how it goes. So if you want to survive you got to build up a personality (consider it like an ...inner body building). You think that life as a straight guy is oh so easy ? I consider myself as a lucky guy cause a have my good moments with women, but they were some big defeats (like everybody has) and yes they live scares and all the rest but YOU HAVE TO MOVE ON ! Stop looking around you for positive reactions, be yourself and don't be provocative, you cant go to Leeds in a fucking ManU-kit and crying like "they're Mancunian-phobic" and stuff like that ;-)
Think about it. Ofcourse you have the right to believe that i'm a bloody racist. I meant "you people" not in the way of "you rejects" (i told you before that i'm writing seriously now, no more trashtalk ;-)) but because you habe another preference, that's all.
Bottom line: If you're a normal person and not an oversensitive princess everything's gonna be allright, i guarantee you. Stop lookin for enemies and don't try to find an 100%-acceptance, NOBODY can achive that, cheers.

***** Yes i know exactly how life in ancient Greece was. And also that Greece then was the cradle of democracy and philosophy. But in 2015 they are a pretty problematic country, times chanced. And i can tell you for sure that gay people are not necessarilly have an easier life in Athens than in London.
Anyway i have the impression that you don't want to understand and you choose the hard way. Or maybe you are 18, at this age everybody feels like a warrior. Point is that you sound extremely polemic and angry. I don't can imagine what exactly is your picture of an ideal society, probably something unreal. It's also clear that you overuse terms like sexism, racism etc. It's the way feminists did it in past decades and history told us that they didn't have the happiest lifes. So as far as i can see you have to choose between a normal life (and yes you know what i mean, you're not stupid when i say "don't be provocative". Provocative like the German politician who went to Russia and played tough gay against the Russian police amd lost his teeth. Statistics say that provocative people (gay or not are ending bad, sooner or later). Like i said either you chosse a normal life or you can try to be a Jeanne D'arc or William Wallace or whatever of the gays. For which price ?
That's all i have to say. after all i'm not you brother ;-) My prognosis is that if you really are a tough guy (or tough gay if you like better) and not only an Internet-big mouth you will land sooner or later in a hospital (that's the good version). Actually it's probably necessary for you in order to grow up and stop believing that you'll chance the society.
Cause at this point you're so blind that you're like a Don Quichotte in a fight against windmills(represending sexists and racists).

I was thinking the other night, if there had been no reference in the bible against homosexuality, if there would be more tolerance today, perhaps even complete acceptance. Mother Nature has always had homosexuality probably since the first sexual life forms, we know it’s part of nature just as having black hair, or some other variance/biological expression. Science and research has come a long way over the years, yet it is interesting regarding this particular phobia. I am not scared of gay men but I am uncomfortable with overtly feminine men whether they are straight or gay.

And this lofty speech at the end, esecially "if it had been somebody older who is trying to change their opinion over the years". Excuse me?! First of all, you do not impose conditions. If somebody does not want to tolerate gays (including me) it's their problem. And it's neiter mine nor your fucking bussiness to change their pointvewi. And secondly, yeah, it was "a young lad". So? I don't recollect young generation is obliged now to sign a commitment not to offend gays. And freedom of speech includes also right ot offending others. I actually cannot believe I had to say something so obvious. Dear "journalists", if this is your way to teach people tolerance, the sincerely fuck you, because it was disservice.

People sound kinda silly and creepy when they imply someone's sexuality needs some sort of "agreement." xD
I don't agree with people who have grey eyes, but you won't see me putting my hands in my underwear when I see them.

Maybe it should be said that the environment really influences on people's opinions. I don't live in the UK, but from what I know, Luton is not the most progressive town in England and it has its own ultra-right wing group. Still not an excuse for people to be cunts, but at least this type of attitude can be corrected over time as a community becomes more civilized.

its adam and eve - not adam and steve. why can't people let other people think that its not right without labelling them ? Its their belief and it counts as much as anyone elses. Just coz it doesn't agree with yours. I personally find the sexual act between two men revolting but if they want to do that in the privacy of their own home thats up to them. Its when i see it rammed down our throats so to speak that it oversteps.

How sad. A person is disgusted by 2 men holding hands. The question is, is it disrupting the way you live your life? Is homosexuality interfering with the way you live? It´s true, 2 women holding hands and the men drool over it, 2 women kissing and nothing wrong with it but when men do it, it´s totally abnormal. How toataly pathetic!

CJ That's the problem with homophobic morons. Their homophobia is almost always directed at gay men. In their incredibly narrow minds, they believe that a woman should be allowed to be with another woman if she wants to but that man should never be allowed to be in a relationship with another man.

More of the increasingly common lets try our hardest to find an extreme situation and paint the british public as awful so our self righteous readers/viewers that aren't actually special at all and hold the same views as 99.9% of the public can think they're unique and confirm in their little narcissist minds that they're smarter than everyone else, maybe before jumping on a trendy twitter hashtag that states the obvious on an issue regarding muslims. Fouseytube level of journalism.

halifaxx55 Well in the year 2015 people have seen pretty much anything. But if somebody acts extremely provocative it's normal that people will stare at him , no matter if he's straight, gay or an alien ;-)
