Beautifully filmed, Dara. What incredible people were around to design and build such wonderful-looking buildings from churches, pubs and houses. Can you imagine being here in 1700? Yes, you would have to have been wealthy and life was tough for the less well-off. The BBC series Larkrise to Candleford paints a gorgious picture of life long past. Far too many youtube videos have music which drowns out the commentary but you have managed to include some lovely calm music pertinent to the scene yet we still can hear what you are saying. Can you stop showing us all that lovely food - no, changed my mind, keep on.
Haha, I am obsessed with food. Sorry, I must film it! We just finished watching all of Larkrise to Candleford. LOVED IT! I think that was set in Oxfordshire... so maybe not far from lovely Woodstock (in the fictional village/town).
Woodstock looks lovely, you both haven’t aged a day since 2012! Popular dog walking spot! Beautiful Church, those beams have been well looked after. Yay, stone faces! Wonderful collection of stained glasses. A bird bath no less! 😂 some lovely quiet shots of the town hall. Woof, woof! Wow the faces on that wood covering were incredible. Great attention to detail on this! Nice to see the high street thriving!

Soon as I hear Woodstock what comes to mind to me is Inspector Morse (Colin Dexter), and the brilliant novel 'Last Bus to Woodstock' , where the novel is partially set. I have never been, but it is on my very lengthy list of places that I would like to go to Dara. Thanks so much for showing me around - I really want to go now! Take care, Paul
Ooooh Morse is WONDERFUL! I don't know that book but I'm not surprised that it was written about Woodstock because of its proximity to Oxford. I hope you get to check it out one day 😉
Hello Dara& Ian. Another great video. Woodstock looks a lovely little town. As there is a war memorial in Woodstock that commemorates to the fallen of War, then it’s not what is known as a Thankful or Blessed Village. These villages sent their residents to war in WWI, but none were lost in the battles of that horrible war. From what I have found there are only 3 Thankful Villages in Gloucestershire, your home from home county. The three Thankful Villages are Coln Rogers, Little Sodbury and Lower Slaughter, Lower Slaughter is a Doubly Thankful Village, it lost no serving residents in both WWI & WWII a rare joy.
I learnt about thankful villages when I was visiting/researching Upper and Lower Slaughter for that video. Thanks for telling me about Coln Rogers (a place I've not even heard of!) and Little Sodbury.
@@MagentaOtterTravelsI'm a big history buff and Gloucestershire resident and I've never heard of Thankful Villages! Thank you for that. My Gloucestershire village lost 27 young men in the Great War which always stuns me when I think of it. Every Remembrance Day they read out the names of those men at the church service. Dara, re Coln Rogers, it's near Cirencester. In the church there I once read this in the visitors book, "I've wanted to visit here for years. Colin Rogers". 😂
What a lovely town. It’s so quaint. We do love a church too, but not as much as we love dogs! What a lot you saw. The Bear hotel looks an amazing place. Lovely to see a thriving high street! Great video 🍻
Yes, Woodstock is very charming and photogenic! We are spoilt because we go to so many touristy towns that still have bustling High Streets. Too bad that is more of a rare event these days across Britain...
We lived in Woodstock for only 6 months. My wife and I in our very first rented place together. Still visit a few times a year. It's quite a posh place! I remember going to a local deli one Sunday morning and asking if they had any eggs. "Only quail eggs I'm afraid" was the reply. Not something you hear every day! Entrance to the Park is free by the way if you know the free gates to get in. I've never ever been in the Palace but we spent many beautiful summer evenings walking around the park then, with barely another soul around as all the visitors had gone. It was lovely.
Oh wow, what a lovely place to live near and wander around! That quail egg story is funny. 😆 I wonder how much your rental in Woodstock would cost now! 🤔 Because we joined Historic Houses, we are able to get into the gardens for free as often as we want, so that's why we take our friends to Blenheim so often. It is a fantastic palace to visit, and everyone is always happy to tour the inside. And as you know, the gardens are so massive! We keep discovering new areas ...
@MagentaOtterTravels ...I like Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight, so many places in Cornwall of course, Pooley Bridge in Cumbria, Chester, Isle of Skye, Arran and Mull , of course many places in the Cotswolds , Devon I love because of family ties and great memories , Sidmouth, Beer, Ottery St Mary especially...so so many places...lol...why I love your channel so much, as it gives me ideas of where to go 😉😅 x
@@glastonbury4304 that makes me so happy to hear! Speaking of Skye... I was looking at a B&B website there today. They talked about being able to see otters... I think a trip to Skye and Mull might be what I need for my 60th birthday 💖😉

Another thoughtful and insightful appreciation showing great cultural and historical awareness and sensitivity. Nice choice of music too, though I can't get the words out of my head: "... by the time we got to Woodstock..."!
Beautiful gate as you enter Woodstock and such a beautiful quaint town. Lovely buildings and church with so much history. Beautiful architecture both inside and out. The baptismal font would be a lovely bird bath, but I'm so happy they brought it back inside and we hope put it to it's proper use. After cleaning it out well! Lovely tour, Dara and Ian.
Hiya. I'd park myself in Blenheim Sandwich Company until I'd gone through the baguettes menu and then move on to Hampers Deli for a MEGA takeaway and Fizz (luckily, you don't drink) to collapse with on a leisurely picnic a la 'Wind In The Willows' (but by a river, not on one). I wonder if 'The Cotswold Tailor' does waistband alterations? Stay safe. All the best to you.
Hahaha sounds like an excellent plan! I hope the Cotswold Tailor can help expand your waistband. As for me, that's why I wear leggings or yoga pants on days like yesterday when I'm indulging in lots of treats... stretchy waistband! 🤣
I'm not surprised he had a church built there. Blaydon is 277 miles away, just to the left of Newcastle. 😁😁 I think those roses round the war memorial are actually poppies. The idea for the poppies came from the poem 'In Flanders Field' by John McCrae. The poem then inspired an American academic named Moina Michael to adopt the poppy in memory of those who had fallen in the war. She campaigned to get it adopted as an official symbol of Remembrance across the United States and worked with others who were trying to do the same in Canada, Australia, and the UK.
Very funny that you made this comment, because two hours ago I was in Witney filming their War Memorial which is surrounded by red dahlias! I was talking about how I was surprised they weren't poppies 😉

@@MagentaOtterTravels I have not watched Fisk. Yet. Is that the Aussie one with Kitty Flanagan and Julia Zamiro? They've both been mainstays of Aussie comedy and TV for decades. I will be flying over in March, but this will be a very short visit, as I will be attending my daughter's graduation. However, I will be back for a longer stay in June. Let's try for June 2024.@@MagentaOtterTravels
We end up going to Blenheim fairly often. We drop off friends and let them tour the palace while we go do something else. So far we've done Woodstock, Witney, and next time it will be Blaydon! 👍
😊The "roses" on the memorial are "poppies", being a symbol of the fields of battle of the great war in which real poppies grow on disturbed land. They still grow today. You must have visited in November at a guess.
I think I filmed this in July. I find that the poppy wreaths are usually left on the war memorials year round. The roses I was referring to were the live flowers growing around the war memorial 😉
So, funny story. I scheduled this video a couple weeks ago, because I had managed to work ahead for once! But then, we ended up going to Blenheim today, coincidentally! We drove by the horse trials twice and I thought of you! 🐎
Woodstock looks like a nice place to visit may give it a go. Hope your friends are fine after the Marmite and pickle experiments. There is a video on RUclips you may enjoy on Marmite advertising l think you will enjoy. I know how that window feels pouching out with age. Were the faces on the pillar the apostles? the church looked beautiful.
My friends LOVED their visit. They are already planning a return trip! We ate lots of yummy food with them, so the Marmite was not their only impression of British food ;-) Haha, yeah... thanks for noticing my little double entendre about the ageing window! I can relate as well. I don't know who the faces were on the pillars.. probably not apostles. There are always faces on corbels in churches and often they are local lords or bishops or royalty. It was a lovely little church. But I always find something to like in just about every church I explore!
@@MagentaOtterTravels our church has mainly the Fitzwilliam family because they were the landowners and everything else. They moved out decades ago now the house is undergoing multi million pound renovations by the national trust all 365 rooms. The church in our village is about 200 years old but had the life taken out of it in the name of modernisation. Not even Cromwell could have done more damage. Pleased your friend's enjoyed thier stay, try marmite crisp/chips really different not the nuts. 😕 You will be pleased to know they also do an Easter egg ooh yummy?. Have a pleasent trip back to the lone star state, hope lan gets some relief from the tennis elbow. Sorry about this year's summer what we had two weeks in July was good.
@@andrewfitzgerald2327 Marmite Easter eggs?! 🐣 Sounds horrid! 😳 Thanks for the well wishes. We actually thought the weather was pretty good this summer! We enjoyed that it wasn't too hot 😉
After visiting Blenheim Palace this May, we decided to stroll through Woodstock. We ate food from the very fancy Woodstock Coop buying their unique Meal Deal instead of the 18 pound quiche at the palace. We then took the bus back to Oxford which allowed us to save 30% at the palace. 🤣
That sounds like a great deal, and I fantastic day out! Coincidentally, I ate quiche at the palace yesterday! We have ended up going there so many times this summer... because as historic houses members we are able to get into the gardens for free and have free parking. So we always take our visitors there and let them tour the palace 😉
@@MagentaOtterTravels 👍 How else would an English kid learn about US culture in the 1970s? I know all about coyotes, ducks, wabbits and useless hunters too. 😁
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, Tony? I can tell you that in the US dogs are not allowed in nearly as many places as they are here! You would never see dogs on trains, in shops, and restaurants, and in pubs the way you do here! Dara the gate reminds me of the one at Stowe House in Buckingham! Happy Friday from your Georgia Fan!
I don't think I've been to Stowe House, but I love those gates at Blenheim. They are very regal! BTW, I also love your family photo on your profile. It's tiny but I can tell you have a beautiful family!
Thank you Dara. I look forward to the day you and I can have that Tea and chat. I was thinking of you yesterday and your flight home and thought...I would think it hard to return to Texas after 5 months. I now how much I hate to leave England, but like you, I have a second life here in the States.@@MagentaOtterTravels
@@TravelswithTanya I love both places. But in different ways and for different reasons. Actually, I just finished filming a video two minutes ago about "why I love living in the UK"! So, when are we going to meet up? When is your next trip to Britain?
I will be flying over in March, but this will be a very short visit, as I will be attending my daughter's graduation. However, I will be back for a longer stay in June. Let's try for June 2024.@@MagentaOtterTravels
@@TravelswithTanya June sounds good!👍 how exciting to have graduation just around the corner! Good for her!💖
Did Blenheim last summer, first time for me since the mid 70s.
Did you drop by Blaydon church? Burial place The Great Man, born at Blenheim in 1874.
Blenheim International Horse Trials started yesterday. A friend has a horse running.
So, funny story. I scheduled this video a couple weeks ago, because I had managed to work ahead for once! But then, we ended up going to Blenheim today, coincidentally! We drove by the horse trials twice and I thought of you! 🐎
How nice! My friend’s horse is in fourth after dressage so well in contention .
@@lizbignell7813 please let me know how it turns out!
@@lizbignell7813 How many were found guilty? 😁
@poliss, ha ha.
Blenheim is on my list, along with Woodstock and Bladen. Have you been to Tetbury?
Not yet! But you never know what's next ;-)
Great video, been there a few times over the years. good camera work, high quality image, must be a nice bit of kit
Cheers! I thought Ian did a great job with the drone photography 👍
great post, have you been to axminster? it's one very interesting stately home
Not yet. We'll have to check it out! Where is it? Is it NT?
Thanks for the well wishes.
We think of the music festival AND the peanuts character
And now you have a new thing to think of when you hear the word Woodstock!
@@MagentaOtterTravels 🐤
I thought that in the US, it was called a "pic-a-nic" basket, and had to be kept hidden from a certain bear...
Yogi?
@@MagentaOtterTravels 👍
How else would an English kid learn about US culture in the 1970s?
I know all about coyotes, ducks, wabbits and useless hunters too.
😁
Those will be poppies around the War Memorial
There were poppy wreaths... but I also thought there were roses growing around the memorial?
We usually don't bring our dirty laundry out to the park...
Heehee exactly! And you also don't want to put a delicious lunch in with your dirty laundry!
@@MagentaOtterTravels true!
Sorry, you can't have a dozen dogs, as number 9 was number 1, just later 🔎
You're kidding?! Well, you get this week's trophy for most observant viewer! 🏆
@@MagentaOtterTravels thanks, now what was the video about 🤔🤣
@@wencireone dogs and sandwiches and hampers 🤣
"Chaucer" was an ancient name for a shoemaker.
Oh! I didn't know that. Very interesting. Cheers!
To be accurate, the one in America is the "other" Woodstock.
True!
You could as easily have filmed your face talking about Woodstock in a Walmart restroom in New Jersey and saved the air-fare.
I rather enjoyed wandering this Woodstock! 😊
Eerr! What happens to dogs in parts other than Europe, that’s a serious question for once.?
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, Tony? I can tell you that in the US dogs are not allowed in nearly as many places as they are here! You would never see dogs on trains, in shops, and restaurants, and in pubs the way you do here! I've been thinking about doing a video about dogs in Britain for the last three years, but I haven't quite gotten around to it yet. I have filmed hundreds of video clips for it, though! Lol
Bladon isn't 270 miles away infact its right door woodstock about 1 mile away where Sir Winston Churchill buried is buried St Martin's church 😊
Did I say in the video it was 270 miles away? I don't remember that... but heaven knows I have been known to say some crazy things! 🙄
No a viewer said it Poliss I think! There is 1 very much up in the North!
@@dianarolph1770 oh yes that's Blaydon not Bladon 🤣
