When I get put in new teams, it amazes me how much people are afraid to be vulnerable and admit when they don't know something. Empathy is the reminder that we're all on the same team. And while I am there to teach you, you are there to teach me how to teach you.

About to give a training on efficient governance and how to manage performance to 80 managers in Ivory Coast… I’m so glad I listened and will definitely infuse this in the training and use the same example when explaining how managers can contribute to install this empathic and safe environment in their own teams ! Thanks !

Empathy is something that can be used in any context. Traditionally 'caring' setting, like schools are obvious ones. However, there are some lessons to be learned here.
Schools can be uncaring institutions with poor leadership and management. There are multiple stakeholders: leaders, teachers, other staff, students, and parents (and still more). Each can feel uncared for if empathy is not at the heart of the school's leadership or management approach. Each stakeholder plays a role in being empathetic to others, not just the leaders.
High schools, in particular, can be uncaring places. I was shocked to hear high school teachers training at SFU say that social-emotional learning isn't necessary at a high school level. The lack of empathy for high school students spoke volumes.
Additionally, having a conversation with someone about 'your last quarter numbers were down' is frankly too late. Daily and weekly check-ins are essential for stakeholders, and this obviously needs to be something that specific staff members are doing. Leadership cannot check-in with a 1000 people every day. However, we can all play our part in ensuring that everyone feels that someone is looking out for them.

I’ve been trying to implement what I’be learned from your books/podcasts into my classroom this year. Even talked with my students about their “why”. Would love to see you have something on education on your podcast. Enjoy all your content, thank you!

I taught for 7 years, and was wildly successful using Sinek's examples to lead my classroom. A huge topic amongst teacgers is "classroom management". When asked about it by those under my wing or who had observed me, when asked how I was able to form such positive bonds with my students, I would point to leading vs. managing, and empathy vs authority. Similarly, I left the profession because I was completely disgusted with the attitude and mindset of those in positions of authority.
This entire mindset and the paradigms that come along with it are what make the difference between a positive culture and what we are currently seeing...a passion driven career being made so ungodly inhospitable that deeply caring people are leaving in droves while others who dont care stick around and coast their way along, turning education into simple conditioning.

Hey Simon, not sure if you knew this but don't mark your videos for kids when you upload them. Or your channel for kids. It causes people to be unable to get notifications when you upload them and I would say a lot of us aren't getting notified when you upload.

The problem is that most school leadership is not concerned with empathy or helping the teachers in their schools. They hear complaints from helicopter parents who refuse to actively teach their own kids, then pass those angry messages down to the teachers. That way, the pressure is coming from all sides, and no one is actually supporting the teachers. The average tenure of a special ed teacher is around 6-7 years. That's how long it takes for these vitally important people to give up on a career that is extremely valuable to the most vulnerable children. We need school administrators who are focused on the teachers and are properly funded to get them the resources they need to succeed.
