The Pats had two quarterbacks they were considering, Brady and Tim Rattay. It was Dick Rhebein who fought for Brady at the draft. If he had gone out to get coffee on that pick, the last 20 years of Patriots history would have been different.
Yep it's tragic what happened to him. The patriots discovered that he had a heart issue after he collapsed once in the facility. He was doing a stress test on his heart on a treadmill when he collapsed again and sadly didn't recover this time. He was originally a receivers coach and when he picked Brady he was picking him from the receivers perspective.
Let's hope Ernie doesn't get on a tread mill soon because he could be next‼Yikes‼
If you looked at Brady’s comebacks at Michigan especially against Alabama you knew he would be great- he showed leadership, focus and tenacity.

All i remember is Brady always winning in Michigan when their starter Drew Henson was struggling. Everyone thought Brady was better after he kept proving it. Draft time came and never heard his name until a couple years later. No one thought he would be the GOAT, but i was surprised he wasnt drafted higher.
This is absolutely correct. The truth is that staff had him as a 2-3 round pick IF teams like cincy, San Fran amongst others waited that long without picking a qb. They knew once those two went first round with outrageous singing bonuses back then that there was no way they would double up for a third sting rookie and burn a pick. At that point Brady was only going to get picked up by those teams as a free agent. Belichick knew this the whole time.
Nah. That was college, and there have been other QB's that had great games in college that ended up on the trash heap in the pros. All pro scouts and coaches saw those same Brady comebacks at Michigan.
When Brady got drafted in the 6th round (199th overall) by the Pats in 2000, he encountered the *absolutely perfect storm* when he had Belichick as coach, and Robert Kraft (seldom mentioned) as owner.
Apparently the coaching staff and player personnel staff saw something in Brady because they took a chance and drafted him, even though it was late in the draft they still took a chance on him. Then when they started cutting down the players at training camp they kept him as the 4th QB which is something that a team hardly ever does, it’s usually the starter and then two backup QB.
Arnie will tell you that Brady made himself into the Elite QB he was by hard work and dedication. All he needed was somebody to give him the opportunity to do it and the Patriots did just that.
They didn't know. If they knew they'd have drafted him earlier than the 6th. They took a flier on him and got lucky. Sometimes in life, you get lucky.
Technically speaking, wouldn’t it be Mo Lewis that gave him the opportunity?

Belichick played up the taking a chance thing so much it’s cringey. He’s lying his ass off when he says that. That scoutin room rates Brady way higher than 199. They had every intention of taking him earlier but saw all the teams who had any need or interest in a qb already draft one. Back then no one wasted roster spots on qbs. It was about building a running game and allocating extra space to tailbacks and full backs. Belichick was thrilled to get Brady for next to nothing and had every intention to find a way to keep him on the roster. He could have gotten hurt first week of mini camp and he would have been retained.
He’s an example of a guy that the combine killed. His tape was great.
To put it in context, the patriots were the only team that actively scouted Brady including reaching out to his college coach. The patriots also had a 3rd round grade on Brady but they had just signed Bledsoe to a long term big contract and didn't need a qb. Did they know he would turn out this way? Of course not. Were they far ahead of the league in seeing his potential? Without question.
They were in fact not. Manginis plan was to draft Brady in either the second or third round had a first round qb fell through. Brady was going to be a 49er that’s why he was all but suicidal when he was unpicked the second day. Guy went from his hometown coach courting hind his family to being a castaway. People don’t understand how quickly the draft changes the landscape of teams needs and therefore many players careers are over before they even start. If it weren’t for New England Brady might have been lost to the ether buried in a depth chart until getting released to allocate a goal line rb spot.
They didn’t need a qb in terms of active depth chart at the time but not only was Bledsoe too expensive they knew he had high likelihood for being on IR as he couldn’t move in the pocket. They paid to have the best arm in the nfl besides Marino. The insurance policy at the time was an ex cfl journeyman in Micheal bishop. They also had the most expensive wide receiver room in the league. The solution was to have a cost effective career back up in order to not have to have to trade terry glenn or Troy brown and have a qb utilize the scheme they had effectively when Bledsoe was one inevitably out on injury. Everyone knew he would occasionally go down but no one knew just how bad it would be.
Chris Eitzmann who Ernie mentioned would run routes with Brady was a good friend of mine from business school. Great person - former captain of the Harvard football team - Obviously a brilliant guy. He played 6 vs 6 and 8 vs 8 football in Nebraska in high school. Sadly he passed away in 2021. I miss you buddy.

Remember that 99 Michigan season and Brady would come in and save UM after Henson struggled. Remember saying during the Alabama Orange Bowl that this guy is the best player on the field. Excited to see them draft him. Surprised it was that late but also was high on Michael Bishop as well

People always make fun of Brady’s lack of upper body muscle development, but he is 6’4.5” with proportionally long legs and arms. That is the standard bone structure of most MLB pitchers hitting high 90s and above, and QBs with a rocket arm. Justin Verlander doesn’t have an upper body like a Greek statue, but he is probably the last Power Pitcher that can throw a complete game Baseball will ever see……similar build to Brady……ain’t winning any Bodybuilding contest.

The entire story when you aren't watching just clips is the Patriots had a very strict parcells style requirement, brady and another qb was on the board no one else was. Ernie saw he was going to he a free agent and pushed bill to get him in the 6th instead of risking it
Ernie saw his mental make up, his games and knew he brady was going to be good. Thry were thinkng of ttading him off after debeloping him and showing him in 2 years of preseason to pick up a 2-4 rounder. The patriots did this exact thing except not wity brady for 20 years.
Ernie set up the system to create a series of good qba based off tom wolf and walshs style.

Wolfe, reid 36 years now. It's kind of an obsession. I made Mock drafts since I was 5. Ive hit the AFC/NFC championship teams 7 years in a row and super bowl winners 6/7 now. A good clue is the te/fb/scat backs, kicker, punters and Dts. The top 5-6 QBs are all the same now Brady is gone. It's a coach's league and those positions. Nothing else matters

@@derekwaters8683 Ernie made his money in the stock market looking for undervalued assets and betting against overvalued. He drafts the same way. He looked at small school players or his favorite players who were good until they were injured in their last year of college.
Other teams started copying it. Frank Gore, macgehee, are good examples from other teams who started copying it. Then you look at Ernie's trades, drafts and free agencies. He traded a 4th for randy moss, gronk had injury issues, Brady wasn't pretty.
Ernie would tell bill to modify the team towards tight ends/fb sets early on because they'd just scoop up the strong supply cheaply in the trades, fa and draft. He'd stack tights like graham and watson. Then everyone copied him then he went wr/receiving tight ends heavy with moss, Edelman. Then back to the/rb sets. Defense was the same way. 3/4 roving zones, to 4/3 cover 1 then to kind of a 515.
That's were the league will go to for turf teams I think. 5 dl-1 lb- 5 db. Outside teams will stay in the 9 wide nonsense but faster dts. Edge rushers aren't really useful because qbs are so fast. It takes interior pass rush to win the owl in the current league rules, that's why ernie would go to 5/1/5.

In many Jules draft mirrored Brady’s. He was bubble talent that was never ever in a million years going to be a qb in the league. Pats wanted him and saw him as an analogue to welker who was becoming an expensive cuncussion case, but integral. They knew Jules was going to be there late like they knew Brady was and they knew where he was going to fit in the team long term. Belichick was an absolute G in the draft and he gets a terrible rep for picks that never panned out.

Brady was drafted in the 6th round. None of the teams saw that much when he came out of college. I do not doubt that once he got to the Pats, they found out what they had.
This is part of the reason why I believe JJ McCarthy is going to be successful. He has the same work ethic. But people only want to look at the stats and not account for the fact that they were a run first offense. Had he been on another team that was more pass focused people would rank him higher.
I would agree... but people said the same about Mac Jones.. you just don't know how the kids will handle the increased mental pressure in the NFL.

The Brady pick should be have its own doc with the years building up to it and the genuis of the pats and 49ers scouting teams. Both were incredibly thorough and picked up on his inconsistent prescence at Michigan. Poured over his film, didn’t listen to naysayers or combine grades back when it was blasphemy to not rate the combine evals highly. Mancini and belichick both had Brady rated as a second round pick. Mangini so much that he all but rolled out the red carpet for Brady. When they picked a different guy early they didn’t have the option to get Brady and bellichick now the opportunity of a lifetime on the table to get the best value backup in nfl history. Instead of blowing a second round pick he listened to the reports and knew no one had qb needs high enough to burn a pick on a passer over an extra running back. He was patient and knew he would be where he was. That’s what happened in truth.
Genius of the Pats? In Belichick's (and his scouts) mind, there was always a better player on the board in the 2000 draft, hence the reason he was a 6th round pick. Bill saw enough at training camp to keep him on the roster ("a wasted roster spot" said Belichick) as the 4th QB and not cutting him, because, in Bill's words, "We didn't want to risk another team picking him up." Kudos to Belichick for not cutting him, but that wasn't genius.

Everything Ernie just said about the process: apply that to Brock Purdy. Am I saying Ourdy = Brady? No. I said, take everything Ernie talked about and apply it to Brock. That's it. It is up to you to come to conclusions.

Nobody knew what they had in him because they drafted him with the 199 pick. If they knew he was the future Goat 🐐, NE would not resigned Bledsoe to a new deal. I think Bill went with Tom over Drew because Tom was probably more coachable and fit the offensive system he wanted to run. Drew was like a Mario who probably wanted to pass the ball more, which led to turnovers. Plus with Drew, he was a veteran who was loved by the owner and fans, so he could push back against Bill since his first season with the Patriots was 5 - 11. The Jets changed the fortunes of the Patriots and the league by knocking out Bledsoe. Once Tom got on the field, he was able to execute the offense more efficiently than Drew with less interceptions. One thing that is extremely interesting with Bill and Tom is Bill kept four quarterbacks Tom’s rookie season. That never happens in football. I think once the team drafted him and realized what they had, they were not willing to risk him going on the practice squad. I think another thing that made Tom the Goat was his experience at Michigan. When it was his turn to start, the coach kept putting in a younger player who had a higher ceiling than Tom, but couldn’t play quarterback. I think that motivated Tom to work even harder…which is pretty scary 🫣

They didn't scout Brady, and Rehbein wasn't theirs. Bobby Grier scouted Brady, he was the director of player personnel and Rehbein was his head scout.
Belichick, Pioli and Adams didnt even get hired until after the '99 season was over, so how'd they scout Tom?
They were with the Jets, they'd have no information on what the Pat's were scouting until they were in the building. They simply followed the board Bobby built and watched tape on the players to concur.

The Patriots drafted some guys named Dave Stachelski and Jeff Marriott before taking Brady. I’d respect the Patriots more if they just admitted they had no clue he’d end up being anything. They took a flyer hoping Brady would end up being a good backup, nothing more. They got lucky.
