It could be because this song was done for Disney, after they decided the LeeAnn Rhymes song by the same name wasn't right. Interesting fact. LeeAnn Rhymes sang her version of I Need You right before Trisha won an award for her version. I always thought they were the same song, just one was pop and one was Country (like Black Velvet). I didn't know they were two completely different songs with the same name.

I've Loved Trisha Yearwood from the beginning and I was sad to see her retire. I don't think she got as much traction as she deserved. But then again it was at a inflection point where we went from country to country rock to country rock to pop.
@keekers :: I went back and listened to the LeAnn Rimes version, and it has its own merits. The musical orchestration is much more in your face, as are the vocals. Trisha Yearwood, on the other hand, takes a more softer approach to the song. Both of them work. The LeAnn Rimes version I could easily have used coming out of a hot dance set into a slow set, whereas I could come out of a slow set with Trisha Yearwood to a hot dance set. Both have their place.
