@@kingbrutusxxvi one of my fantasies is waking up one day to an announcement saying they quietly filmed 9 or 11 more seasons over the years without anyone knowing and are gonna release it all like a Netflix series.
When you commented on the Captain’s lack of faith, think back to the first scene of the war. Where he prays on the cross and tells people to have faith. Then watched as all of his people were obliterated.
Then when they get the materials they scavenged out of the derelict and away from the alliance, Jayne says "I call it a win!" Mal's "Yeah, we win" said it all about his loss of faith, optimism ...
I would amend that to "entertainment cime of the century". The real world here has far worse atrocities happening everyday and this isn't the time or place but just sayin'...
Well, I'm still not able to talk about it because it upsets me so much. I think it was just mb 5 or 10 years ahead of its time. When you look at the shite that gets 3 seasons on Netflix now...
Important point about Mal: he *was* religious, up until that battle we saw at the beginning. You see him with his cross, and saying that God won't let them lose...and then they lost, big time. Now he's not such a fan of God. (Some will say he's an atheist, but I think it's more a case of him deciding that he just doesn't like God all that much anymore.)
Exactly. But nearly everybody misses this very important little scene at the beginning of the episode while watching it the first time. There is so much going on in that battle sequence. But after watching the show over 20 times (like I did :D) you notice all the important little details. Give Mary some years... after this ride she will be one of us and benchwatch this show multiple times.
With the pun formed from his name Mal is more likely a maltheist than an atheist. He believes in a god or gods but considers it/them to be evil or uncaring.
Yeah, it's not that he's picked atheism, it's that he's lost his faith. He doesn't believe in something new, he's kinda broken and has retreated into bare survival alone. It's not that religion is right or wrong to him, it's just a waste of time in his survival mode.
@@EclecticMystic My interpretation of atheism is that like or dislike of God is irrelevant. It's really if you think the concept/story of God, any god really, is possibly reality or most likely just manmade fiction. So it really depends if Mal decided God isn't real, never was, because of the bad events that happened to him. Or he just wants to reject God because he felt like he was unjust or uncaring.
Mal is actually quite simple: You don't hurt his crew. It was a tragedy that the show was cancelled in the middle of it's first season; it was truly ahead of it's time.
Malcom Reynolds is a man of honor and principle. He's an Orange Lantern. "What's mine is mine It's mine, it's mine It's mine, it's mine Not yours MINE!!"

Alan Tudyk tells the story of the woman who cancelled Firefly. She says that even though she's had a long career in movies and television, she always gets introduced as "The Woman Who Cancelled Firefly." Chinese is generally used for swearing in Firefly so there are no subtitles. It was doomed when the studio decided to air the episodes out of order. The important thing to know before the next episode is that you must have the proper order. This truly was the pilot episode, double length. The network made them shoot a second pilot and gave them a weekend to write it. Then the network aired everything out of order, with the last aired episode being the pilot. My favorite quote about Firefly. "14 episodes of elation followed by a lifetime of longing." BTW, the actress that played Inara is also the actress that played Vanessa in Deadpool.
Watched about four reactions to this. She's the first one that included Jayne showing concern over Kaylee dying. That was always an important shot for me. He was like a jerky big brother... but he had a heart too. You really don't get him until Jaynestown and when he got his hat.
Once you've watched Firefly & then Serenity, think about watching The Expanse. It's IMO the best science fiction show being made currently. Next year is it's last season (#6). It does tend much more towards hard science fiction than anything else you've probably watched in terms of how space travel works etc.
I stopped and came down to the comments for this. The second classic punch line she cut just as I was saying it ("curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!") :-) Thanks. Now I can go back to the video ...
Yay! So glad you're watching this. Firefly just gets better and better with each episode. I love Inara (the companion) as well, she's such an underrated character 😊
At about 4:20 ish Mary says "Hes not religious", its good to note that in the battle of serenity valley scene at the very start Mal has a cross that he kisses.... the loss in that war took more from Mal than his sides freedom from the alliance, it took his belief in a higher power that fights on the side of good, I firmly believe this was going to be Mals arc over the 5 proposed seasons, to regain his faith.
This show is, simply put, the bar by which other science fiction TV shows should be measured. The character concepts and development arcs are second to none, and the script, acting and direction is beyond compare. The special hell remains reserved for those who were involved in its cancellation. Looking forward to watching you discover this gem.
I literally could not find the end of the comments! Scrolling and scrolling like it's neverending! What can I say that others haven't? I think and hope you will enjoy the rest of the episodes and the movie, too.
@@FlukeyFlukeFluke I did not say it's equal to Firefly, just that it makes up for it being cancel too damn quickly. It's a sci-fi series that has awesome storyline, with fabulous acting, has the viewer on the edge of their seat with great space battle scenes, and many episodes that will have the viewer in tears. Firefly would have been that too, had it continued. It actually did all that in just 14 episodes, and a movie. Like Firefly, The Expanse would have been canceled, but was saved by Amazon.
@@detrix42 I'm not sure I can agree that it "makes up for" Firefly's cancellation but if that's the way you see it, Rock on! And stay SHINY. Edit: I DO love The Expanse as well.
@@FlukeyFlukeFluke don't think of it as a substitute. It's its own thing. Other than being in space and largely centered around a single crew though Expanse went beyond that very early, I don't think that they have a ton in common.

Also when people recommended it being similar to Mando: the characters don't have equivalents between Mando and Firefly. When we say it is similar to the Mandalorian. its because they both use western tropes in a space/sci-fi settings, they are not by any stretch of the imagination variations on the same story.
I am so hyped to see you react to this series. It should be a great experience. Firefly is an excellent show with a lot of fun episodes. I am sure you'll have a good time with it and we'll have a good time watching with you.
Cowboy Bebop was one of the first anime I really got into, and was basically a space western. Firefly was a natural fit to feed my want for more in the genre...how here I am in 2021 waiting for something else to come along and fill that gap.
While the "Public Relations" line was funny, there's likely some truth to it. They are dealing with criminal elements and Jayne probably does have a better personality for that element than Zoe or Mal do in some situations.
Everyone has incredible arcs in this show! You do need to watch all the way through the film to see the completion of said arcs.Just make sure to include that. No spoilers here!
Can't stop the signal! One last quick note: (no spoilers) Captain Mal tries to be a bad man, but has such a code of honor that gets in the way and then he gets irritated with himself. In all honesty, Malcolm Reynolds is the closest Hollywood ever got to showing what a combat veteran with PTSD really acts like. And that is not just me saying so, tons of veterans who are fans of the show say the same thing.
The crew will definitely grow on you. Every one of them. They all have very fleshed out backstories and motivations. This show revels in grey areas, it's not as much about good or bad but right and wrong. Not to say the crew always does the right thing! But when they don't, you can really feel the doubt and uncertainty.
@@happyslapsgiving5421 No kidding! During the reboot of "Battlestar Galactica," they used so many of the video techniques, and in the first episode, you even see a "Firefly" spaceship in a scene.

I miss this show and wish I was watching it for the first time again. I'm jealous. Hope you enjoy it as much as all of us in the comment section. The movie 'Serenity' is also one of my favorites too. The show should def be watched first for sure.
The show is set in the future where Chinese is spoken by everyone as a second language; the foreign language that they speak occasionally is Chinese. The show mainly uses it mainly when the characters are swearing.
Well not a second language, it just just merged into one language. They all speak a single language, and when they speak "Chinese" it is no different to them.
@@wyterabitt2149 Except that may not be what happened. When the generational ships arrived at the new multi-star system, the different nations settled different star systems. With Simon and River Tam should have been Asian actors.
@@wyterabitt2149 I wouldn't be surprised. The interviews are all over the place. It is interesting how they built in all the Asian references, but then don't include any Asian actors. Also the Blue Sun corporation seems to be an Asian corporation.
You're the first reactor I've seen that finds Mal annoying, which I think is caused by two things: 1) they cast a younger actor than the script intended, and 2) the character is supposed to evoke the archetype of a Southern patriarch (the head of the family, the head of the farm, the wagon train guide, the small town sheriff, etc) whose leadership is taken for granted.
Always wonderful to welcome a new brown coat to our ranks... even if they do not know they are a brown coat yet... P.s. you are just as beautiful as Inara in the show.
One of the best and most bittersweet shows ever created. A masterpiece of sci-fi storytelling brought low due to incompetence of the network administrators. Glad to see another person finding it even after all this time.
True Story: While I was waiting for the ad on another YT video I saw this in the next up list ... I came straight over. I'll have to go back to that other youtuber later ...
Oh man... this is going to be so much fun to watch you as this goes along. Not only is this one of the greatest sci-fi shows (and movie) ever made, it genuinely got better as the season went on, and the movie truly was a fitting end to it (though unfortunate given all the circumstances). I would bet good money this ends up being one of your favorite things ever.
There was a short moment in the beginning of the prologue scene where Captain Mal pulls out a crucifix from under his shirt and kisses it good luck, contrasting with his later disdain for Shepherd Book and religion 6 years later at the time of the rest of the series when he's all jaded.

I love how IN to the show you got! It's such a treat to see the reaction to a show that is so beloved by the fans that we get to see basically how we reacted to the show when it first aired, all across your face!
The important thing to know before the next episode is that you must have the proper order. This truly was the pilot episode, double length. The network made them shoot a second pilot and gave them a weekend to write it. Then the network aired everything out of order, with the last aired episode being the pilot.
Ep. 1 : Serenity
Ep. 2 : The Train Job
Ep. 3 : Bushwhacked
Ep. 4 : Shindig
Ep. 5 : Safe
Ep. 6 : Our Mrs. Reynolds
Ep. 7 : Jaynestown
Ep. 8 : Out of Gas
Ep. 9 : Ariel
Ep. 10 : War Stories
Ep. 11 : Trash
Ep. 12 : The Message
Ep. 13 : Heart of Gold [unaired on network]
Ep. 14 : Objects In Space [unaired on network]
Serenity Movie
After you complete the series and movie, additional content comes in the form of :
Serenity roleplaying game [Margaret Weis Productions]
Graphic novels
Novels
board games
comic books.
I saw this and literally squealed! I’m so glad, you’re gonna LOVE Firefly.
DEFINITELY worth the watch.
My favorite quote about Firefly. "14 episodes of elation followed by a lifetime of longing."
BTW, the actress that played Inara is also the actress that played Vanessa in Deadpool.
Loved it, and can't wait for the eventual movie reaction. This series was gone was too soon.
Oh hell yeah! Looking forward to these reactions!
Yes, it's worth the Hype.
So hope you enjoy this short ride. I’m super stoked to see this here 👌
8:57 - "and if we're really, really lucky, they'll do it in that order"
I stopped and came down to the comments for this. The second classic punch line she cut just as I was saying it ("curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!") :-)
Thanks. Now I can go back to the video ...
Yay! So glad you're watching this. Firefly just gets better and better with each episode. I love Inara (the companion) as well, she's such an underrated character 😊
Enjoy it. Soak it in, every episode.
Which would make sense. ... "Malcom is the man that Book was before he found faith ... Book is the man that helps him find peace."
Please react to the Amazon Prime series called "The Expanse." It makes up for Firefly getting canceled soooo quickly.
It’s very good, but it’s no Firefly!
The Expanse is awesome and likely the best SCi-fi on television right now.
That "dork" You will end up loving.
In fact, I loved all these folk so much, it hurt, when it was all over... 😔 I thought something was wrong with me...
It only gets better, trust me by the end you'll love them all.
I always figured that it meant, "If the public tries to kill us then Jane will try to kill them right back."
Everyone has incredible arcs in this show! You do need to watch all the way through the film to see the completion of said arcs.Just make sure to include that. No spoilers here!
Ooooo I didn't know you had covered this series! This is one of my all time favourites! Looking forward to seeing if you enjoy it.
You're really going to grow to love all these characters, even Jane.
Jayne actually became my favourite character. He may be an a-hole but he's hilarious!
@@ARD-lk5pr He's an a-hole ... but he is -our- a-hole.
Man of honor in a den of thieves
They're not crooks, they're legitimate business-people.
Their big damn heroes.
@@schuettjoel Ain’t they just?
@@schuettjoel Yet they aim to misbehave. Or so I hear.
The crew will definitely grow on you. Every one of them. They all have very fleshed out backstories and motivations. This show revels in grey areas, it's not as much about good or bad but right and wrong. Not to say the crew always does the right thing! But when they don't, you can really feel the doubt and uncertainty.
The Mandalorian might have been influenced by Firefly.
They eventually could, but it took him a while.
@@happyslapsgiving5421 No kidding! During the reboot of "Battlestar Galactica," they used so many of the video techniques, and in the first episode, you even see a "Firefly" spaceship in a scene.
4:21 “he’s not religious.”
He was in the opening scene. Not anymore though.
Glad to see you doing this series. It’s awesome! Can’t wait to see your reactions to some of the best episodes. Stay Shiny! 😊❤️
K can we all agree that this show is awesome and anyone who spoils anything deserves to be given to Reavers
Yes, absolutely! We’re looking at you James Friel!! Not an actual spoiler but close, and nowhere near as clever as you think it is.
Marvel, now Firefly!!! If you react to Buffy and Angel... I’m in love!
Slowpoke. ;-)
The passion of the nerd, if you havent already found the channel its superb
Marvel, Firefly, Buffy, Angel ... the common thread? Joss Whedon! Throw in Dollhouse for good measure!
I love that you're watching this show. It's a favorite of mine. I watched this whole series when I got my wisdom teeth pulled and when it was finished, I started it over and watched it all again. I miss this show and wish I was watching it for the first time again. I'm jealous. Hope you enjoy it as much as all of us in the comment section. The movie 'Serenity' is also one of my favorites too. The show should def be watched first for sure.
So cool that one of my favorite reactors is finally watching one of my favorite shows 😁
Enjoy the ride, Mary 🍒
The show is set in the future where Chinese is spoken by everyone as a second language; the foreign language that they speak occasionally is Chinese. The show mainly uses it mainly when the characters are swearing.
Well not a second language, it just just merged into one language. They all speak a single language, and when they speak "Chinese" it is no different to them.
Mandarin, in point of fact.
@@wyterabitt2149 Except that may not be what happened. When the generational ships arrived at the new multi-star system, the different nations settled different star systems. With Simon and River Tam should have been Asian actors.
@@Dularr It was around 10 years ago I saw it now so no idea if I will be able to find it, but what I said came from Joss Whedon in an interview.
@@wyterabitt2149 I wouldn't be surprised. The interviews are all over the place. It is interesting how they built in all the Asian references, but then don't include any Asian actors. Also the Blue Sun corporation seems to be an Asian corporation.
All i have to say is its a tragedy that they canceled this show it deserved more
Rumor has it they are bringing it back with a second generation.
@@dracoargentum9783 that’s gonna suck
You're the first reactor I've seen that finds Mal annoying, which I think is caused by two things: 1) they cast a younger actor than the script intended, and 2) the character is supposed to evoke the archetype of a Southern patriarch (the head of the family, the head of the farm, the wagon train guide, the small town sheriff, etc) whose leadership is taken for granted.
Firefly is so good and it gets really emotional. Your going to love it.
Another show that reminded me of Firefly was Dark Matter. 3 seasons and almost as good...
Yes, Dark Matter is also a good show
Dark Matter was pretty good at first, but it got kind of tiresome watching the characters become their own evil twins over and over.
Happy you're watching this. Can't wait for your reactions. One of my all time favourites.
By the end of this series, you'd die for these characters.
Mal walking in, not pausing and just shooting that Fed is a lot of his character in a nutshell
Love your channel and so glad you’re delving into Firefly!
Always wonderful to welcome a new brown coat to our ranks... even if they do not know they are a brown coat yet...
P.s. you are just as beautiful as Inara in the show.
Was just a kid when it first aired back in the day. Sigh...good times.
I'm so happy you are starting this series! You will love it! ;)
It's awesome that you're reviewing Firefly. Looking forward to your future reviews.
It’s great series! You will enjoy it...
I'm so excited to see your reactions to this series!
I really wish they could bring 'Firefly' back, somehow. It was such an amazing show.
There was a short moment in the beginning of the prologue scene where Captain Mal pulls out a crucifix from under his shirt and kisses it good luck, contrasting with his later disdain for Shepherd Book and religion 6 years later at the time of the rest of the series when he's all jaded.
