Hey Austin, lovin the vids. I have seen a second hand 51inch carbon board for sale and wondered if it will be too small for me on UK waves. I am 180cm, 80kg, a fast runner and have been flat land skimming all my life on a woodie, but want to now go deep. My sternum is at 52inches. Any advice is welcome.
My opinion (been doing both since the late 80’s and introduced lots of newbs to both sports) Learning the basics of surfing is a bit easier...because you can start with a big fat board on a small gentle day (knee to waist waves) and be comfortable quickly. But...becoming “competent” in a variety of conditions on smaller boards can be very hard, though a lot of that depends on your athleticism and the amount of time you can spend doing it. Skimming has a very quick learning curve, but starting out be prepared to spend a lot of time falling on the sand, getting rashed up, and being sore. Both are fun as hell, and knowing how to do both makes the beach so much better. Why? Conditions. There are big windy closeout days or everything is just brutal shorepound when surfing just sucks (terrible conditions) but some of those days are awesome for skimboarding. A golfer has multiple clubs...you have a quiver of wave tools. Skimboard, bodyboard, longboard, shortboard, fish, kiteboard, and of course a giant unicorn float... Just get that saltwater in your bloodstream and LIVE!!!
