I remember this station as a kid. Radio meant a lot then.
I woke up and went to sleep with this station when I was growing up. I would go to their shows at the Apollo and checked out the top 16 every week. What a great time to grow up in Brooklyn!
Delores Winkler Let's not forget Rev Mike !
I meant Ike !
I really miss my Brother Bledsoe...soo Kool so loyal and taught me much..always talked about "the King's English" lol
The Soul of The City 1600 WWRL
This was the best station on the AM dial!!! R.I.P. Gerry Bledsoe.
Yes I to can remember as clear as day listening to WWRL SUPER 1600... THIS BRINGS BACK OLD BROOKLYN DAYS WHEN TIMES WERE GOOD ...WISH I COULD FIND A TIME MACHINE
This is about as close as you’ll get to a time machine.
My station back then!
I remember WWRL as a youngster, too. I liked everything else about WWRL except that it was on the AM band. It played songs that were not played on FM radio stations.
I remember Jerry when he was at WMXD in Detroit in the mid 90’s.
Jerry B. He lived around the corner from me in Jamaica, Queens.
I lived off of Rockaway Blvd, near Belt Parkway. Where did he live?
I remember Enoch Gregory, Jeffrey Troy, Gerry Bledsoe, Hank Spann coming to my house. Does anybody know if any of DJs from 'RL are still alive? I miss my dad, Mark Olds. He was the manager of WWRL and president of WBLS. He cared so much about music. I grew up on all genres. I miss my Dad. He was a good man who worked hard. He knew that blacks should be running both stations back then. But my Dad had a family to support and he and my mom were political activists. They fought for equality. Dad always said, "I was a fair boss." But he knew that as a white, Jewish man, he was resented. He heard people saying horrible things. But he was always professional and loved music. He was devoted to his job.
Thanks for sharing your Dads memory. 🙏🏾

WWRL - Woodside Radio Labs
World 16 wwrĺ memories
And we can't forget about Enoch Hawthorne Gregory known as the Dixie drifter. Happy Hal the housewives pal (give me a mop. Give me a broom. Let's clean up this dirty old room). Your boy Jeffrey Troy . Rocky g. And of course the love man Frankie crocker. The 8th Wonder of the world. It was back in the days when they used to have real newsmen come in and do the news every 30 minutes. And of course we can't forget the Reverend Ike who showed up right after the love man. It was a different time for radio. A better time. I can still remember when wlib used to have to sign off everyday at 6:00 p.m. to make way for WOWO from Iowa or Idaho. Lots of great memories. I can still remember when the 'RL jocks would emcee the shows at the Apollo Theater.
This was so entertaining I even listened to Jeff Barnes so the news
And no I didn't forget about Bobby Jay or hairy Old Bob T. Or Hank Spann the Soul Server!😊
WWRL became a gospel station afterwards
And the it became talk, as an Air America Radio affiliate, and today it is Radio ZINDAGI.
coolies
