Through the 1960s, 70s, and into the 1980s, New York’s 1600 WWRL was the AM R&B leader. With a fast pace, slick jingles, & hip on air personalities, the station sizzled.
Some of the jocks who worked st WWRL include, Bobby Jay, Frankie Crocker, Don “Early” Allen, Jeffery Troy, Jerry Bledsoe, Hank Spann, & the voice heard on this aircheck, Gary Byrd.
Gary is one of the longest running radio personalities in New York.
Gary Byrd started his radio career in the 1960s in Buffalo.
By 1969, he landed a night gig at WWRL, becoming the youngest radio personality to work in New York City. Gary was still a teenager!
He spent many years on air at WWRL, hosting the show he called, “The Gary Byrd Experience,” or the GBE.
The GBE innovative all-night format became extremely popular.
Eventually, Gary moved the “GBE“ over to WLIB, where it evolved into an issue oriented talk show.
As of 2020, Gary is STILL on the air at two different radio stations. The “GBE“ is on 107.5 WBLS, making it one of New York’s longest running radio shows. He also hosts The GBE 2.0 on WBAI New York.
Gary, today know as Imhotep Gary Byrd, recently celebrated 50 years on the radio in New York.

After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks
WWRL was such a great radio station. .The big "RL in New York.
Love the memories!!!
One of my favorite djs, Gary Byrd socially conscience, articulate, entertaining, great radio, I grew up in Jersey, my older brother listened to WNJR, WWRL, WLIB, WBLS back in the late '50s-'70s. Learned much listening to Gary Byrd a great black brother.
Thanks for the trip back in time. The big RL is what taught us to be cool relevant young musicians back then. I enjoyed and cracked up hearing those old new York accents in the commercial. Thanks so much for the video.
You're welcome!
I remember that station from the 70s, I was ten years old, they went to,wbls in ,1973, know I am 60 years old
WWRL WAS THE ULTIMATE BLACK RADIO STATION ON THE AM DIAL. IT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES FOR ME AND MY FAMILY WHERE I HAD TWO PARENTS AND MY THREE SIBLINGS. I ALSO USED TO LISTEN TO HIM ON WLIB FOR A LONG TIME.
I remember this station like it was yesterday and it was my favorite station in the 70s . I loved everything they played . I still have a lot of my old 45s that I bought from back in the day and they still play to this day

You’re welcome!
Such an Awesome Station WWRL AM 1600 thanks, Ellis!
This was one of my favorite stations in the late 60s and early 70s. I was tossed between WABC, WOR-FM, and WWRL. RL played the most Motown. I don't think I fit their target audience but music and presentation passes all barriers!
Good memories.👍
I could look under an XMAS tree and never receive a better gift than the sound of Gary (every brotha ain't a brotha).Byrd. There was nothing better than the soulful sound of WWRL 1600 (That's Double OO soul radio. This was truly an Xmas blessing
Thank you thank you thank you. I think Mr. Byrd came on right after Rev. Ike.
Good evening sir. I’m a native NYer and this was my late mother Mary’s station growing up.During the day it was WWRl and nite time is was WCBS FM for the oldies. We didn’t start listening to FM full time until disco came around and WBLS 105.3 was playing in the other part of the house.Thank you for all you do keeping these memories alive
That's WBLS 107.5

Thanks for posting these WWRL airchecks! I wish I had more recordings of this radio station. Also love WLIB. At least we have the rhythm review on Saturdays on WBJGO 88.3 FM in Newark, NJ. Used to live in the area but now I stream WBGO from Florida and still love it!
So glad to have found this, a gem of Nyc & tri-state area radio memories!
Great station . Right here in Woodside. Back in the late 70s then News Director Dick London invited me to the station and gave me a guided tour.👍👍thanks Ellis as always.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
WWRL was a great station

Can't forget about Gary Byrd, the SONGWRITER!
Village Ghettoland by Gary Byrd and Stevie Wonder.
Shout outs to you Ellis for this fantastic footage - I have been Personally doing some private research into Gary Byrd and my convictions are exactly as I suspected... the original True School rappers have been Deeply inspired by this man on the radio when he got out here in NYC and Frankie Crocker as well... thank you once again for this detailed info
@@doommega You’re welcome.
Enoch Hawthorne Gregory ( the Dixie Drifter ) ,Al Gee,Frankie Crocker,Hank Spahn, Garry Byrd,Rocky Gee & Jerry Bledsoe- the best of the best.

@@arushilovesmusic Yes, very awesome airchecks from Ellis.
Love this !
Great aircheck, I am from the big apple, and airchecks of this radio station are hard to find. I only wish there were airchecks of this station from the 1960s available. Keep up the good work.
This sounds great. Love it. May 1973, I was 18 years and getting ready to graduate high school and by October 1973, I was at boot camp...Parris Island, SC, United States Marine Corps. Love to be 18 yrs old again.
Glad you enjoy the uploads! Someone is sending me a WWRL aircheck from 1968 & 1969, with Jeffrey Troy, Gary Byrd, & Al Gee. As soon as I get my hands on them, I will post it in the coming weeks!
@@EllisFeaster Sir, we will all be here anxiously awaiting them!
@@EllisFeaster thanks Ellis. Im going to enjoy this. Sounds great. I about forget what AM radio was like, since I only listen to XM radio and RUclips.
@@EllisFeaster can’t wait
Big RL played the roots of disco in '73: funky music. Loved them & WNJR at that time: "The Black Rock of New York". WWR's using those Tom Merriman jingles like WCFL Newsman Dick London was of Arabic heritage.& also worked at WGBB. They mentioned late Sonny Taylor, a dear friend, worked there & came from WGRT Chicago. Trivia: WLNG's Paul Sidney used to work there as production director. Thanks, Ellis!
WNJR Newark, the Black Rock of the Great East Coast
@@andy42959 Yes, I actually thought of THE GREAT EAST COAST correction after I wrote the comment, My bad. WNJR's JAKE JORDAN doing afternoons was da bomb!
Amazing content , this channel is a jewel.
Thank you so much 😀 Glad you enjoy it. 3,300 air checks and we are still going.
I just love it
My great grandmother god rest her soul she use to ALWAYS listen to this station…I’m currently looking for a song called “he lives” I don’t know who sings this song but he sung it so soulful it’s kinda stuck in my head if anyone can help it’ll be greatly appreciated! God bless 🙏🏿
It's a shame that there were no FM stations in NYC that ever sounded like this. WBLS was too laid back and "sophisticated" in comparison, and while 98.7 KISS was bit more upbeat, by the time they signed on in 1981, radio in general was less exciting in its presentation. In the 80's, only Z-100 and WPLJ (and WAPP for a very short time) came close to a 70's top 40 presentation, with contests, jingles, talk hitting the post, etc. I wish there was a R&B version of that on FM in the 80's. I know 98.7KISS had that one "jingle" (more like a "shout"), but the music was also too ballad top heavy, at least compared to WWRL and WNJR from the 70's...
Wish he had been on here in Los Angeles, great 👍🏻 personality!
Occasionally, I could hear WWRL in Pittsburgh, at night.
So I see WCBS Newsradio 88 was hardly the only station to run Gramercy Park Clothes ads in the overnights. I read somewhere at one point, 1010 WINS did in their early years. How would WABC Musicradio 77 have handled them?
I hear some good TM Shockwave WWRL jingles!
Would this be the same "GBE" that James Brown shouted out on his 1973 recording "Mind Power" (from The Payback album)?
@@modernretroradio993 The same!
Artists/songs? 10:10, 10:12, 13:03, 13:17, 15:20, 16:36
10:10 is Soul Makossa
by Manu Dibango. I don’t have time to listen to & identify the whole Aircheck.
You did your thing on this one brother! The great Gary Byrd what!
Glad you enjoyed it. Someone is sending me some more GBE! When I get it, I will post it in the coming weeks.
At 15:20 is There You Go, by Edwin Starr, still have the 45.
What'd he say at 3:03?
"Across 110th street... Feel the vibe..."
WWRL WAS THE JEWEL OF THE RADIO 📻 NILE ALL PROPS TO ALL OF THE BROTHERS THEIR ,AND MY BROTHER ESPECIALLY IMHOTEP GARY BYRD.GENE WALLACE
