US$9 - RD$500 Food For 5 People - Is it achievable today?

Red beans RD$69
2 Green plantain RD$50
Fresh chicken 2.5lbs RD$200
Green pepper RD$15
Red onion RD$51
Garlic bulb RD$18
Small pot oil RD$42
Tomato paste RD$32
Rice 2lbs RD$75
Coriander (not used) RD$32
Total spent RD$588, however only half of the garlic was used, not all of the oil was used and the coriander was not used. Giving us an approximate total cost of RD$547 in US$9.73

You answered several of my cooking questions, so thank you. Question: I saw you poor oil and then hot water in your rice. Do you boil your rice under fire or just let the hot water cook it while covered?

I bring the water to a boil, then put the flame down very low and cover the rice...when it smells like rice, it's done, normally 20-30 minutes depending on the quantity and how you want it to come out.
