Cynic were miles ahead of their time. Ripping musicians. (I have to add, a friend played Death - Human to me so many years ago, that's where it all started for me. never looked back). If only Chuck was still here. I fucking love metal.
Absolutely amazing! Sean your drumming is so artful and versatile. Been a devoted fan since I heard you first on Death's Human (truly groundbreaking), then came Cynic's Focus (my jaw dropped in awe when I first listened to it through headphones late at night and remained that way ever since), Aghora's self-titled, Gordian Knot, Cynic re-union albums, finally old Cynic demos which got widely available to listen to. Such a shame Cynic is no more. I truly hope you will sooner than later make a great music in a band or solo project and that the world will again witness your talent, skills and most importantly a vast musical depth that you've got inside you.
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s here’s my top 6 most influential metal drummers (no particular order) for that period. To clarify, this means “during” that period, and does not include other drummers who made music in the 80’s and 90’s that I discovered later on. 1) Sean Reinert (Death/Cynic) 2) Tim “Herb” Alexander (Primus) 3) Gar Samuelson (Megadeth) 4) Danny Carey (Tool) 5) Gene Hoglan (Death) 6) Charlie Benante (Anthrax)
AAAAAAnd there is Malone in all his infinite enthusiasm. I went to the local tape store every other day until this album was released. We had no way of knowing back then! Thanks for sharing!
Back when you couldn't record an album in your bedroom, bands had to practice their asses off to get the take they needed in the studio. Especially if you didn't have a lot of money.
More than likely that was the case for the record because as someone already stated back around this time you couldn’t just get “punched in” if you made mistakes. Everything or at the very least each song had to be in one perfect take.
90s yo... When real musicianship and musicians showed and mattered.... Thanks to software and computers. Any kid with enough time can sound like Sean Reinhart
Yeah, he will be missed. I remember you duds from Florida in 1988 or 89. I was not old enough to get into the bar to watch you guys play and every single one of you cats snuck me in to see the show. I sat behind Sean's drum set for the release off Focus which I still have. It was your debut show I think. Pretty cool man sorry about your guys's lost man I am a fan for 35 years. Myself and a cat named Dave death first nickname is name is Dave Patron. But I remember watching you guys rehearse in the warehouse man. You guys remember raped ape
I'm gonna be honest, when I first heard focus (the entire album) I thought the drums were entirely synthetic, I was like 13 and so was the album, tho. Still don't know if the drums are electric or acoustic but now I know they were played by a human (well, I've known for years now) and am even more impressed!!
What a great piece of history and all of us watching this are so lucky it even exists.. given that prob not many people had access to a cam recorder back then.. What are the names of the people shown on the video?
The first time I heard this was on the “At Deaths Door II” album and there was no synthesized voice on that version (wish they hadn’t even used it for the album!). Anyway, I was blown away by how innovative it sounded at the time. As a drummer I was amazed at how much nuance Sean played with, just as I was with his playing drums on Death’s Human album but this was even less straight forward and more creative. Some of the patterns he’d come up with had so much groove and tasteful too.
wouldn't you just be sitting there going "this is absolutely fucking unbelievable!!!" The fact that they are calmly listening intently to minor details demonstrates how this band just operated on a different level to most bands. And compared with bands today?.........Hahahaha!!!
