*So.. yeah.*
You did good
It's not as flashy as others, but maybe that sort of understated glitter is what somebody would really like. It's not a road distraction but still looks nice.
It's not awful, I actually like how subtle it is. Solid 4/5.
I think it's variety speed shape time 👍
1
Seems like when you're experimenting with new products, a dual-color (black/white) like the previous video gets you more data points. Would've been nice to see this one on both bases.
Yeah, I would prefer if the dual colors became the norm for completely new products
I completely agree
Or, do white, 25% grey, 50% grey, 75%, and black.
Agree!
Bro I was just about to say this thanks 😂😂
I love the understated subtlety of it. It’s like looking at an actual pearl. It’s kind of refreshing. I think you guys are so used to doing these very vibrant colors with bold results, that this seems underwhelming to you. That being said, it would be nice to see this over a black, pink, purple or sky blue base. Thanks for sharing.❤
This☝🏻☝🏻
100% 👌🏻
I keep saying they should double down and start a new channel. ‘DYC Shapes’. It could give follow up videos of this channel with multi-Color speed shapes.
I agree 100%
Subtle and classy. Understated can be very elegant.
I actually really like how subtle it looks. I’d love to see it over another base as a comparison.
Honestly, I'd love to see you revisit this and put it over various colors on the models to see what it complements the most.
Just watched this video with my best friend who has been in the automotive paint industry for 30 years and he said that what you did is correct. He said that's how Mother of Pearl is supposed to look. It's a hidden type of color.
Mother of pearl is very subtle. That looks just like it is supposed to. Maybe would look a little better over like a brilliant white but I think it looks fine.
I agree. I was thinking it looks like a sparklier version of Eminent White Pearl on a Lexus.
Not every thing needs to be in your face trying to standout.
I concur as well, and it's still noticeable, even if it's subtle, it's just soft and pastel, like it's supposed to be!
This. I think the expectations were different from reality given the sharp and vibrant changes that are typically used on this channel. It is acting like a pearl and is working as it should. I've had pearl white cars before, and this is the result. Subtle, unobtrusive, and what would be deemed a teasing flash of color. For what it is, it works. I would not put this on my car as I don't like white, and will not buy a white car if I can avoid it.
This, exactly. Thats what its supposed to look like. I would say maybe an additional coat or two might make it more noticeable or less dirty looking but its really not supposed to be. The flakes seem really scattered so like nail polishes, sometimes you need more coats to fill in the blank spots and with nail polishes, it can take up to 3 coats for full opacity but even then, i dont think it would change how subtle it is. It'll just make the coat look more uniform and less like a literal flake
I’m sure that the black/white split requires more prep, but for experiments like this that would seem pretty value added to do.
Thanks for the years you’ve put into this! Always look for and to seeing what you guys come up with.
Subtle is an understatement but it looked incredible on the black stir stick. More speed shape tests. I'd love to see this over multiple colors.
It did what pearl is designed to do, give a slight "pearlescent" effect.
With the outro before the reveal, I was prepared for something really bad. It's not what I prepared myself for and honestly looks ok. I can see someone wanting this. And now they know what it will look like.
I commend you guys for showing projects that don't go the way you hoped/planned and show them even though you consider them to be failures. Opinion is subjective. Keep up the great work.
Agree, I actually like this as a solid 4/5 despite it being plain / boring in principle, but it still gives that pearly flakes like my mom's polo with the OEM white pearl kinda colour, so yeah it's defs not a fail, just not as extravagant as other projects lol
That's a lot of work to turn a white car white.
I truly think it’s not bad. At least seen through the camera. Subtlety isn’t always a bad thing. This right here is what I love about what you guys do. Experiment and see what happens, win or lose! Keep the surprises coming! 😎
I like the pearlescent effect a lot, maybe not the dirt looking part. But other wise a nice effect. Very subtle OEM look for the most part.
Personally, I think this should've been one of your black and white splits. I think it would've had a 180° difference.
Still this is a great layout for anyone who might want a more subtle affect on their vehicle. I don't think it's a fail. I think it's more of a niche look. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would appreciate the subtlety of this mother of pearl.
Honestly, I think this is a great combo just not for RUclips. It’s not super flashy, but it’s kinda like the car equivalent of bleaching your hair. It’s a fun good looking change without the commitment/shock factor of something crazier like pink hair.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Really appreciate the honesty and transparency before the reveal. This one was a bit of a flop but how are you going to know if you don’t try, right? On top of that, you’re showing so many people what can go right AND wrong in these videos. Keep up the good work. I’ll be watching during my lunch breaks every Friday that you continue to post!
I don’t think you are giving it enough credit. It is absolutely beautiful. It isn’t flashy in your face kind of paint/color. It is a sophisticated classy look. And could be considered as a upgrade for a older car bringing it up to a higher standard so to speak. Look outside the box. Love your work. Keep doing the unexpected. It’s sophistication you brought this time. 👍🥰
Honestly, this is kind of the dip you would get if you wanted to dip your car but you didn't want to dip your car. There's probably somebody out there that's like that's perfect! Not everybody wants flashbang colors or head turning glitter, sometimes you want something subtle and this actually may have a market.
I was expecting something much worse. It actually looks pretty good. Not as great as the more dramatic ones, but for someone who wants a simple but expensive looking white, this could be great. I really want to see this color on a purple base, I think it would really make the more subtle shifts stand out the way they should.
It’s actually a really pretty white. I don’t like white on a car normally but this is like white 2.0
Some times your own perception of what works is exactly what others love and you hate. I really appreciate how you took the basic white and made it unique without it standing out as a really bold change and it is very secretlly elegant. Thank you for sharing what in yoi personal opinion you dont like or think succeeded
I think seeing the failures alongside success is more informative and interesting to watch. I think just seeing the perfect scenario every time is kinda too easy to predict. I like when it's unpredictable. So I don't think you should feel bad if you ever get a bad result. A bad result is just as good as a good result.
I think you're selling yourself short on this one.
If looking like mother of pearl is what you were going for, I'd say you nailed it.
It's not my cup of tea, but if I wanted that pearl look, this would fit the bill.
3.9 outta 5.
Great video as always, and thanks for posting!
Very understated pearl and I give a score of 2. I would love to see it sprayed over some of the speed shapes to see how it pops on other colors.
Always look forward to my Friday uploads from you guys. Thanks for the laughs once again fellas.
It is an interesting flake, speed shape with a range of colours would be a good go
I concur, the safe way is a test on a range of speed shapes, it's what they exist for. But 3/5 subtle , not a disaster. I also really enjoy seeing what you get up to each Friday (although I am more interested in paint than cars). Fonzie's underwhelmed response to this result made me laugh! Thank you for doing what you do!!❤😊x
Always have fun watching what you guys come up with, keep the crazy experiments coming! Good on you for showing the lows as well as the highs.
Its very understated and subtle, i love it.
It is elegantly different without drawing attention, only a keen eye would notice and appreciate it.
This is a solid 10/5 guys!!! Yes it may not be the most eye catching or popping finish. But that subtle shift from white, its so elegant and soo mesmerising for me. I would definitely love too see this put onto the Mustang, I feel that the more aggressive styling of the body will lend itself very nicely too the shift
I honestly love the subtlety about this color. It reminds me of fresh snow at sunrise.
Very true! This would look good on a Mustang! ❤❤
I think that might work as an additive to some color without sparkle, like a Candy. Just to add a little gleam without going with a shifter. I don't think it looks that bad. It's enough that someone walking by would stop and take a closer look trying to figure out what's going on. So 3 alone, but I think mixed with the right color it could be a 5 additive.
Oh, I think you are right. It'd look great as an additive to a strong color that you don't want to change.
Great to see the honesty- we all learn more from failure than success - keep going and pushing the boundaries for us.
Love this, so subtle and not what I was expecting from your description
Actually I kinda like it. It isn't the worst thing you've done.
I think this might be one to try over pastel bases or really bright bases that you want to tone down.
Kudos to you for the honesty. Thumbs up and respect. Poor guy looked like you were going to cry. It still has a subtle enhancement but certainly not too great on the time/effort/expense to appearance ratio.
This video was just as much fun to watch! I enjoy predicting what I think it will look like at the same time hearing what you 2 think!
I honestly love that you're making videos of the good AND the "bad". This is worthwhile data acquisition! Keep it up! That said, from distance this reminds me of my pearl white S13 Nissan 240sx, it's a nice subtle white pearl!
You know something's up when Fonzie looks bummed!!!! I rate it a solid MEH. I think it would definitely pop with a darker color like the blues.
I've used Mother of Pearl Mica Powder on craft projects. What I found out is it works great on dark colors. The lighter the color, you never see it. It's amazing on deep purple and midnight blues. Try again. Stay safe in this nasty weather we're having in the Midwest.
It happens. Like you said, there is always a chance to look great or not. This shows when I try my car to be mindful of the base. Keep up the great work!
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your recap. On RUclips, so many creators try to hide issues like this, giving the audience a false sense of the effort, it takes to try something new, fail and learn from it. Please keep trying, and know it is appreciated! I look forward to your videos every week for the last two years.
I make fishing baits, I watch your videos to get ideas and a lot of the powders you have shown have made it into my colorways. I think this would be a great addition to the color line up. Not great on a car, but perfect for small plastic baits :-)
Mother of pearl, in nature, on a white surface is really subtle to begin with, so I am not too surprised that on a white base it does not "pop" like your previous projects.
That said, it seems to look and performs as expected, and I personally appreciate the subtlety.
I wonder if it would be worthwhile to use to give strong coloured base coats just that little sumthin' sumthin', like gold, teal, or purple.
Definitely more subtle than most but still looks good. Appreciate the honesty and the fact that you try new things means I will continue to see what comes next. Peace outband have a great day
I think it would be great when you full send an experiment like this to also have some speed shapes with different and contrasting base colors to show what else can be done with the top coat.
My honest opinion of the final result is it only looks bad in the shade when the Pearl pops it looks good I do agree that when you are testing these unknown products it might be best to do that Harlequin style split down the middle black on one side white on the other or maybe even a small scale testing first with speed shapes in different bases
I like that setup. You guys did not fail at all on this one. I think its stunning, yet subtle almost show car vibes. Make people look twice
Thanks for this and don’t be so disappointed! The results are perfect from someone looking for a pure clean white look with a little flare.
I really don't mind how subtle it is. I like low key flashiness, so this would be something I would do. 3.5/5
I wanna see this done again but with more flakes. Maybe alot more!
I was thinking at least doubled.
@@ryanmcguire8752 doubled or tripled.
And this is why I love to watch every Friday!!! Honesty is always the way.
Just keep bringing us great content. Great job.
looks like the OEM white they have these days on the WRX from a distance but definitely falls apart when you get up close, it was a solid try though
i watch because you guys take chances win or lose. always entertaining nothing to be sorry about you make mistakes so we don't have to. great job
Mad props for always trying and for being honest. Y'all totally fucking rock!
Cheers guys for taking a L and continuing to teach and show all how this all works. Heck end of the day I wouldn’t call it a loss because as a business you’re showing your customer base what to do vs what not to do, this all leads but much better customer service but the bottom line, increased revenue.
It's not as bad as you made it out to be. It's absolutely got the mother of pearl shimmer.
It’s a good, honest video. I applaud you guys for not hiding mistakes. I still want you to perform your magic on a Matt black Can Am Spyder. Trikes should look great too. Respects from the uk.
Deja vu of the glitter car. This has happened before and is why I still follow and watch every vid. You keep it real about the experiments that fail as much as the ones that work.
Keep it up and I'll keep watching!!
The real wonder, for me, is where the yellow spots came from?
I like the subtle shift. I think extreme is good if that's what your looking for but subtle works too. Not to flashy. Glimmers of color are nice too.
I'm not here for fancy & awesome! every day. I'm here to learn how to better use the products. I'm realizing now that I'm still in the 'Whoa you can paint your car then peel it off?!' stage even though I've been following every week for years. lol I see what ya mean how its a miss when up close but I really dig how it looks further back
At least you guys have the guts to show fails. I appreciate that!
Looks great. Gives OEM vibes with a pop up close.
Dude! I think it’s awesome! Love the sparkle, very understated. That said I would love to see this over a dark blue base. 5
Looks fantastic. Love the subtle look
I like it. it's subtle. I think if you went through and did a full shine on it, it would pop out a little bit more, but subtlety is good sometimes.
I rate your response as a 10 for honesty and I kinda like the subtle flake it’s completely different
It honestly reminds me of snow with this subtle luminescence it really does mimic snow very well.
I actually emailed the dyc and asked about a combo just like this about 8 years ago. THIS is EXACTLY what I wanted and envisioned. I love it! 5
Love the honesty. This one is a definite fail. not sure what the little yellow brown spots are but i'd probably get this car ready for next weeks video ASAP.
It looks interesting, kind of a cool effect.
A couple of other ideas:
Mix some of these pearls or flakes into the base coat.
Maybe try grinding some flakes or pearls to smaller particles, maybe a mix of both.
I like the experiments you guys do, even the failures, always something to learn!
Love your videos! This one didn't do it for me. Maybe over a black base it would have been great. 1/5 for me. But I appreciate your transparency showing this project.
I would love to see you guys try again and get it right 👍
Maye your BEST video yet, because you were genuine and honest. Now put that on a chromed up Daimler Jaguar with an off-white base.
When YOU screw up its a lesson, when a customer screws up its a lose. I trust DYC to give me honest answers, and your misses prove you push the limits of your product.
That is spot on guys, just the look it supposed to be. A nice subtle colour interaction, well done. Doesn't always have to be bling 💎
Nice one 5/5 👍
It looks great for what it is which is a pearl. like a true white satin material. Smooth and silky.
I kind appreciate its subtle discrete look. I like it
Don't be sad Fonzie 😀 you guys are awesome, I love following your projects 😍👍 wondering how it would look like over a platinum or a dark red 😀 take care.. love from 🇸🇯
It's doing what it's suppose to do. Mother of pearl is subtle and I say you nailed it
Looks good better than flat white.4/5
May work with 2pak clear coat.
Yep, if indeed this is the mother of pearl that you are going for, it would be interesting to get speed shapes and use this over darker colors. Think navy blue, burgundy and even forest green. That would be interesting indeed. Great content as always. 😊👍
Some car manufacturers have pearl white as a colour option. This is the best I've ever seen, when it comes to simplicity.
I say well done 👍🏻✨
Mother of pearl is a classic glaze for me when doing ceramics so I love to see it brought to the automotive world
It looks like what I was expecting, like the old pearl paints from the late'50s-'70s, I dug it!
It’s very subtle but I like it. It looks like old school pearl white, my wife had an Acura nearly identical. Bet it would look great over a bright yellow or tangerine base.
Great episode you kept it real why I like this channel.
Wish more RUclipsrs were like you, wish you would get with GC Performance in Florida and do some bicycle's that's an untaped market.
I think if you want your car to have a muted spark which is overpowering, this is the right color combination! I love it!
I like it! It's subtle. Not in your face! I'd like it with blue hue more than yellow, but that's just me. Thanks for the video!
This is exactly how a pearl is supposed to look. I really don't see why you're disappointed in it. It's slightly understated and not flashy. If you look at the Tesla Pearl White cars, this is what you see. Thanks for doing this video. I may want to do this on my silver car as it's just enough effect to make the color pop better from the right angles.
Its not what I was thinking but it still looks great keep up the great work😊😊
Huh. So that wasn’t click bait. RESPECT!! Thanks, guys, for sharing the real deal.
The slo-mo blending was the best part of this video!!
Um…hi…lurker here….This is actually one of my favorites you’ve done! It’s so subtle, yet classy. I think you didn’t give it enough credit! Of course I’m seeing it through my phone and not in real life, but I think it’s marvelous!
NOT A FAIL. Sometimes less is more and subtle wins. Honestly I dig it. It makes you do a double take. At first glance it's a white STI...but...more. I'm giving it a SOLID 5/5
I actually loved this really subtle finish, 4/5. It did look a little clumpy in places but otherwise quite classy. Though in cloudy England it may just look white!
Something just do not work out but it was great to see the out come.
In that way u can move on and make it as an good experience
I think it's lovely. Makes me think of fresh fallen snow.
Up here in Rhode Island, we have something called Dels Frozen Lemonade. This finish looks just like it! I know what you were hoping for, but the MOP got lost on the white base. Maybe a pale blue , or pink tint in the base would produce that shell effect? Still pretty, give it a 3.5 looks / 5 underwhelmingness!
I like it, it looks awesome great job.
Thats the right colouring for Mother of Pearl guys, it's a very subtle colour, maybe over different bases as you say in a test. Give this another shot as I think over black or Electric blue would be good
I really appreciated the vid you guys did when you had the car half black base and half white base. You should do more of those, especially with things like this that are lesser known what the results will be!
I would love to see it on a grey base coat as someone said but good job.
I love your videos.
