Shotguns are for hunting animals. AR15s are weapons of war. If you need either for home/truck 'defence' or law enforcement you already failed in having a civil society.
You’re going to find that 102% of Americans disagree with you.
Pin of shame
Ignorance is not bliss. Not once has the ar15 been used in a war other then civilian defense during a war.. anything can be used to kill. Nothing is excluded as a weapon. Not one thing is not a weapon.
If it can kill an animal it can kill a person. And as anyone will tell you not once has the AR-15 been used in warfare. If you don't actually know what your talking about then your better off just staying silent. And the only reason you don't think anyone needs a gun to protect themselves is because you've never been in a situation where you need to protect yourself. I'd even wager you don't want to protect yourself. You probably think the government cares about you and will protect you. And that is a rather foolish notion.
It's still a great home defence gun and no one goes in to war with an ar 15 they use m4 or m16
When I trained under the late great Col. Jeff Cooper at Gunsite back in '86, he always said: " The purpose of a handgun is to fight your way to a rifle or shotgun."
What an experience that had to be! I really wish he'd get much more credit for the services he provided. He was light years ahead of the majority of podcasters of today.. People like A. J. wished that they were half as good as Bill. He led the charge for sure and paved the way for truth seekers worldwide. ⁶
Small bullets may expand, big bullets never shrink.
"If you're ever in a fair fight, your tactics suck." Best advice ever. Never got to meet the man in person, but have read much of his words on paper. A legend. Semper Fi.
@@johnbroussard3666 Now that's a keeper
Nothing wrong with that statement. But the reason to carry a handgun is because it can be always on your side, and easily within reach. I can concealed-carry a handgun legally almost everywhere. Not true with long guns.
Myth #3: sound of a shotgun.
My take: if he's crazy enough to break into your home while you're home, he's crazy enough to kill you without a second thought.
I can attest clatch clatch only works if you have the bad guy looking down the business end of the barrel.
@@pauldurham3852 if the dog screaming didn't scare them why would my shotgun racking do it?
Yup, that sound usually works to the perp's advantage.
Well, I got to witness an incident in country. The platoon was quartered in the barn, buddy had watch. I woke up just in time to see the door creak open and my buddy to rack the charging handle on his SAW....yeah, dood was long gone in the whole few seconds to get up and check.

If you're forced to use bird shot for home defense because of the ammo shortage then I suggest using it in the most effective way possible, aim every shot fired at the head and/or face of the quote bad guy, while typically not deadly a face full of bird shot will most likely be blinding and extremely painful, if and when a bad guy goes from having 20/20 vision to blind in 0.03 seconds he/she isn't likely to continue their attack.

Short strokes or buck fever can happen to anyone. I saw my dad run a full magazine +1 rounds through a Springfield '06 without pulling the trigger once while aiming at a trophy mule deer. He was an experienced hunter and a trained Marine. After the buck strolled past he was totally confused for a bit. I had time to walk over and picked up all the unfired rounds while he sat there in the blind and stared at the rifle. Apparently the awesomeness of the buck kind of saturated his consciousness.

Agree with OG, on the racking, or displaying a weapon deterring someone. It's not just drugs, but mental health issues, even simply someone being in a rage, it won't always put them off, even being faced with a wall of people, they will come at you. Plus, something that would put a person down normally, or incapacitate them, say injury or pain, won't stop them at all, or not quickly enough.
It is also useful to have some physical hand-to-hand, self defense training. It helps a lot of the time from someone getting a hold of you, or getting away from them if they do get hold.
When a slug blows their heart and lungs out of their back they will immediately stop what they are doing.

@ron stone5 I'll take your word for it. You seem to be an expert in banality. Have fun pretending to be a smart boy who cant compose a coherent thought.
OG, I think one of the things of real value that you highlighted was that most people - normal people - do not ever come in contact like you do with the kind of people who break into houses, intimidate people out of pure evil, sucker-punch people they don't know on the street, Invade homes with pipes and machetes and maybe another perp, etc. - and so myths like "they'll hear that shotgun rack and run away" just don't apply to psychos on meth or PCP.
I grew up in inner cities, exposed to more nut cases than I ever wanted, and I agree wholeheartedly - don't use a "normal" mindset standard when you are judging psychos. Especially drugged ones. We have abundant historical information about, for example, the Moros in the Philippines who - drugged - could take a full cylinder of .38 to the body and keep coming and kill the soldier that was shooting him with a machete long before succumbing to his wounds; it's why the .45 ACP 1911 was introduced for military use.
You can scare off a black bear with a yell LONG before one of these determined crack-head whack jobs will even notice you are screaming. I grew up with these zombies - I'd use a howitzer and just rebuild the wall behind them - it's only plaster, studs, insulation, plywood, and shingles. You can't replace a family at Home Depot. Great video, as always.
The Philippine situation was when the military was making a switch from the single action army to the colt lightning double action revolver. The thundere was introduced shortly after that used .45 colt. It was the meth doped soldiers of the Korean War that convinced the military to stick to the .45 acp for pistol cartridges when they were exploring a 9mm option.
@@dansherman1980 Sounds like you have some facts crossed up. The weapon that was switched out in the Philippine war was the .38 Colt M1892 double-action revolver, which proved ineffective against attackers. For a time, the army re-issued the single-action Colt Peacemakers, and near the end of the Moro Rebellion, the rechambered double-action 1892 revolvers in .45 Colt, which were renamed the M1909.
But research and trials for a .45 caliber semi-auto were underway during this time, with final testing of the Colt and Savage semi-auto pistols from about 1907 onward. The Colt 1911 was selected and issued just before WWI as the standard US sidearm, in .45 ACP, to comply with the requirement of "at least .45 caliber" imposed by the Army, based on their experience of the effectiveness of larger caliber bullets on the heavily-drugged Muslim Tausug suicide attackers.
It wasn't until the mid-1980s that the Beretta 9mm was adopted - long after the end of the Korean, and Vietnam, Wars. The Brits in Korea used 9mm in their pistols and Sten and Sterling submachine guns, but not Americans unless they picked up a Browning Hi-Power and used it ad-hoc.
@@MrGsteele no I got it straight the first go around. The military was considering a 9mm option in the 1950’s since a lot of our allies were using them at the time (pre-STANAG). That’ll be about when decided to develop the Model 59 with a “hush puppy” variant. The Korean War happened and that got put on hold. S&W converted some of them for double stack mags for the 1980’s military trials.
Note that the .45 ACP was not significantly more effective. Fact.

@@BrianMillerCEO ive converted quite a few anti-gunners simply by taking them shooting, teaching them properly, and ensuring they had a safe and fun time. That being said, they were reasonable people and not the rabid retards who freak out over a kid pointing finger guns in school. Those rabid retards are unsaveable, and frankly should be ignored.
No matter how good at shooting you are, the information game is a gunfight you will always lose.
Officer Greg, I enjoyed seeing this. I started in law enforcement in 1979, and back then the 12 gauge pump shotgun was THE police long gun. Aside from what was taught in the academy, I had been running a pump gun since I was 14 years old so I was already used to the weapon. My last agency got patrol rifles in 2007, and they are quite useful, but my shotgun still rode with me in a double rack next to the rifle. I'm like you in that whenever I , got a call that sounded like it could be hot, I reached for the shotgun. It was just what I was used to, and that means a lot in an emergency. Younger guys, especially if they had been in the military were more familiar with the M4 and went for that. As a police firearms instructor, I saw a lot of small statured recruits having problems with the shotgun but not the carbine. I think either one is effective in the hands of a skilled user.
Now that I'm retired, I still rely on my shotgun for home defense, specifically a Mossberg 500 loaded with the Federal Tactical 00 buckshot load, backed up with Federal Tactical slugs. I really like both of these loads. In my experience, the Federal load patterns a great deal tighter than the "1 inch per yard" axiom, and as you pointed out, these really do have to be aimed or you can clean miss your target even across a living room..
As much as I like my shotgun, it isn't for everyone. I live alone and so I don't have to worry about anyone else using my shotgun. But if I lived with others who might have to use the home defense firearm but who don't have a lot of training, there is a lot to be said for keeping an AR-15 around. That being said, if someone breaks into my home, they are going to encounter a grumpy old man with a 12 gauge pump.
Most police officers lack not just combat experience but firearm experience outside their duty weapons. I always take any police officers opinion on firearms with a grain of salt..
Remember, Germans thought that the shotgun in trenches wasn't fair
But they saw fully automatic HMGs as fair game from the start...
They also used .22LR sized ammo, or smaller, which today is actually banned in warfare because they cause unnecessary suffering.
Some German HMG gunners who survived the war with their minds somewhat intact said that killing countless soldiers wasn't the hard part, it was waiting for them to actually die...
@@Free_Krazy actually, they werent typically designated as HMGs. Those were classified as Machine guns, and later MMGs En masse. Reason being, they had to be fired from prone, or supported positions as most were belt fed. The 1919 browning was an example but naturally arrived after the war. The rifles like the Chauchat, were in fact LMGs even though they fired massive rounds, and fuck all let's be honest... it didnt fucking matter what it shot, shit shot really big pews...
@@Free_Krazy also, the 22lr isn't true. Maybe some rounds, but no. Not in WW1. Most germans during the era the shotgun remark was made were utilizing ridiculous cartridges. That war saw only 1000-10000 of any given rifle issued typically. Why? Because so many innovations were made. The Italian carcano was even retrofitted for I believe it was a 7mm instead of its 6.1, that used to be. That happened, then ammo had to be tracked and the right ammo to the right gun, and as you can imagine... it was a god damn mess. Welcome to WW1
@@Angels-Playground I said .22 SIZED ammo is NOW banned in warfare, I believe this came along with the ban of chemical weapons, but before then most HMGs were already firing larger rounds.
@@Free_Krazy again this just isnt true. Most rifles regardless of their firing selection fired .30 caliber rounds or higher. I'm not sure where you got this information from but its blatantly incorrect.

The cons knew this but a few of them knew that we opened it in the evening when the big rec yard was opened only A few thought we closed it when the yard got closed but it really was manned till midnight. 3 enterprising cons decided to cut out late in the evening right through the back double gate sally port. It was right in front of the tower. One of our guards watched them quietly from above as they cut through the inner gate. He let them clip a wire on the outer then pulled the release on the huge plate glass window. The sash counterweights had rotted off ages before so it came down with a hellacious bang followed by the 12 gauge racking. They dove back through their hole and hid in the industries section. They were so afraid it took us nearly an hour to get them to come out so we could walk them to the cell house🤡
The way you avoid short stroking is to train for two discrete actions. Everyone wants to be cool, or 'fast' and treats it as a single action. Its two - clear and load.
Well put. Thanks,
I short stroke all the time trying to shoot to fast but that's usually when I've got 5 minutes alone at home 🤣
Another great video I love my new 12ga I was converted thanks to yourself and taofledermaus
Alright, that's enough, if you start talking about your sight picture I'm outa here.
I’m actually very well trained on combat rifle. However I have a double gun for my home because I only need to close it and it simply works. No pump, no safety it just works. (I don’t have enough shotgun training and don’t have the time for it).
I use mine for fishing up by Alaska where the bears are real, and for my farm. I’m not concerned with two legged predators, but it definitely will do the trick. I also am a fan of Federal Flight and have extensively patterned it as well as 1 1/4oz slugs. I have shot clays with both and can almost keep up with guys shooting 6, 6 1/2 and 7 shot at the same so good enough for coyotes. (Brenekee for the bears though, although I hope to never need them).

Something to add to myth #5 in a lot of states you can be charged with assault with a deadly weapon just for firing a warning shot. Someone in my area did that and is in jail for threatening people on his property with a warning shot. In my state we have the castle doctrine which basically means the threat must be INSIDE your house before you can use lethal force, outside you have the “duty to retreat” even on your own property, you must attempt to flee before using lethal force.
Not a lawyer here; NY is particularly awful for restrictions if you're not a cop. Smarter folks than me have said ANY use of a firearm (outside of a practice range or hunting) is "deadly force," DF is only justified if you feel your life/someone else's is in imminent danger. Pulling the trigger without intent to kill, shows you weren't sure your life was actually in danger, so you're in deep 💩. Even if you're justified, never say anything to officers about what you did or why, have your lawyer say it for you.
Could you do us all a favor & teach Joe how to safely operate a shotgun? I know "fire 2 blasts into the air" sounds good in movies, but it's actually highly illegal & personally I think it's extremely irresponsible for a president to advise people to break the law. The "Biden Defense" does not hold up in court...
It's also important that the person (Sleepy Joe) know something about the subject he's talking about. It's still remarkable how many people who want to write laws know so little about the subject. I couldn't participate in a middle school class debate without actually knowing the subject.
@@gdaddy5193 my high school debate teacher was a far left nut job who would use debate in attempt to push these ideas. She would force you to play devil's advocate on things like gay marriage, gender equality, climate change, etc... luckily she was gone 60% of the time so when she tried to fail me for not participating, I went to the board & pled my case. I said I would gladly debate her on why I should get a passing grade in front of them & they could be the judge... once they realized she missed more days than she attended & I only exempt myself from participating due to 1st amendment religious rights I received a D+ and was allowed to graduate. Living in an apartment, I think my neighbors wouldn't like that. Especially my upstairs neighbors....
I hear "gun experts" at work say the thing about racking your shotgun to scare the bad guy. It's crazy how "well known" that is.
I'd often wondered about that one, and if there's any data to back it up. My thoughts were if you're up against say a career burglar who wants to avoid confrontation, then it might work as a warning. But like OG says, against a criminal who means to do harrm, or doesn't care, then all it's going to do is alert them.
@@brolohalflemming7042 and the other part of the argument would be how would you know the difference?
@@zachaliles Yup. I thought about it from the position of what I'd do. I don't want to be on the wrong end of a shotgun. But hearing it, I'd also know that the place is occupied, they're awake, they're armed, and a pretty good idea where they are. Which means the defender loses the initiative, which generally isn't a good thing.
This video also got me thinking about the legal position, ie if alerting the criminal would provide some justification for them shooting first. I'd like to think it shouldn't, but the law can sometimes be an ass. I presume in places with Castle Doctrine or stand your ground, there's less protection for the criminal.
If they leave after you rack it, you win.
Otherwise, guess you're going to have to pull the trigger.
@@ScottKenny1978 Yeh, armed intruders (at least with firearms) are far less common in the UK. I also think the US has a growing problem. On one hand, anti-firearm people want to restrict the ability for people to defend themselves. On the other, anti-police rhetoric and prosecuters not taking crime seriously is enabling criminals. And then to add to the mix, chemically challenged criminals who behave erratically and less predictably.
Then there's just the geographical challenge, ie in a city, police response might be fast, in rural areas, less so. Or as OG says, you're on your own. And I don't think advice from senior law makers helps, ie Biden's suggestion that if you hear noises on the porch, let them have it with both barrels. Somehow, I doubt LEOs, lawyers or unfortunate pizza deliverers would agree with that advice.
Bought a case of that Federal, but in #1 buck. Come to find out, Federal discontinued it shortly after I bought it. Wish i could find more, it's devastating.
Discontinued Flight Control? It was Federal's biggest seller. Is it available in 00-buck? There was a lot of controversy about that FBI study of 0-buck. Hoping only the 0-buck has been discontinued. After looking high & low I did find two, 5-round boxes, of FlightControl with 00-buck. Lot's of people have been on a waiting list for years. I bought a bunch of production over runs of Winchester and Federal military 00-buck. Got it in plain brown cardboard boxes, 5 count and 25 count boxes. Haven't seen that production run, military stuff for years. That's some very good ammo. Can't find it anymore either.
Hard to find 7.5 birdshot in the bulk packs too. There was 100 shells in each box. Sold at a very good price at Walmart. The crap that gun shops put on the shelves these days, stays in the shelves. A 50-round box of 9mm Luger for $78 bucks definitely stays on the shelves.
@@whomagoose6897 #1 was discontinued
I got lots of those old rounds. You're right they're devastating.
Look into reloading 12ga. It's rather easy and far less expensive than metallic reloading. I have developed many loads for #1 and #4 buckshot that are wicked and highly accurate. I typically use MG-42 cushioned wads, or Ranger Elites through a full choke, in a Baretta 1301. Federal flight control is the ONLY commercial ammo that patterns as tight as my stuff.
@@Loader138 I make a 10 pellet 00BK round with the MG42 wad that is absolutely devastating. My buddy hit a big deer with it last season and it fell on the spot. You may want to reconsider that full choke. I get smaller patterns with cylinder bore using 00 in my Mossberg.

The only thing I would add to OG's myths is not a myth, You should always count your shots. It takes some training and firing rounds to do this but you should know how many rounds you have in your weapon of choice. 12 Gauge Mossberg is my choice I like the double or single buck and slugs.
Were you ever in the 25th Inf Div? I knew a Trotter back then. We trained with the Mossberg with of all things buck and slugs.
The rule for shotguns in courses is "feed the beast". Reload single or double rounds whenever possible to top off.
@@theimmortal4718 I agree with you on that. The perfect/good drill for that is to shoot 2, load 2. I also add If you throw 10 rounds of 12 gauge at it, and it's still a problem, you might want to call in an artillery strike.

Those "SHOCKWAVE" shotguns can be a useful tool, if you live in a small apartment and have to make a fight stopping hole in someone less than 15 feet away, or across the room.

Pistol has one purpose in life. getting me back to my rifle.
Great video as usual. I always thought that the statement "you don't need to aim a shotgun" meant you don't need front and rear sights alignment, just aim along the barrel, like with skeet shooting. You don't have time for perfect aim so you just wing it over the barrel.
Shotguns far more than pistol or rifles are shot instinctual.
The unfortunate thing is some of the best defense rounds for indoor use are restricted in various jurisdictions. Pepper rounds, "bean" bag, tasar rounds flachet . Many are less than lethal but you won't kill your neighbor or kids on the other side of the wall. Flachet are lethal but when I actually tested them a few years ago they pretty well were stopped by a couple layers of drywall. Lawmakers get upset with the idea of firing razor bladed darts though.
I never understood why people feel the need to put fancy sights on shotguns.
I shoot clays maybe once a year (backyard, not a special course), and I always hit 80 or 90 percent. If I can hit a 4-inch disk, 60 feet away, 20 feet up, moving, from low ready, without even a bead on the barrel to aim with, and NO practice, surely almost everyone can hit a man in the same room, right?

Although I gather there were problems with some batches, I had a Remington Versamax in the store and having tested it with various loads it cycled even 21g trap cartridges without any problems. I thought this good for a semi-automatic as they are prone to being picky with light loads as Officer G states.
I do like a rifle better for building clearances. Time with it overseas and shorter and lighter I guess...
I'm actually always been a fan of #4 Buck ... no clue why except the number of pellets ... in my mind it's like hitting a target 30 times center of mass with a 5.56. 38yrs of hunting and shooting clays=Im confident in my ability to hit my target under stress with a shotgun. That said, the pistol grips and ghost ring sights on todays tac shotguns make no sense to me for home defense. That stuff gets in the way of the speed Ive developed hitting moving targets with a standard stock and bead front sight. In fact I went shooting with a SWAT officer who brought his tactical shotgun. While he did great on stationary targets at distance, he couldnt hit any moving targets, like clays or quail. Gave him my standard shotgun, and some coaching on swinging through the shot, and he started taking down moving targets.
So, what's the advantage of rifle sights and red dots on a shotgun when I can drop flying clays, ducks, grouse, and quail with a bead sight?

In the military a shotgun works real well in close quarters no problem
I agree with almost everything OG says here, but I take CAT scans and X-rays at a huggle Trauma 1 ER, andd I see the aftermath of a lot of shootings.
Now I don't know everything about everything. but my two cents is worth a dime.
Handguns are really hard to hit things with under pressure. I don't care how much you shoot. And I don't care how good to shot you. When someone is shooting back, it becomes very, very hard to hit anything with a handgun.
Bird shot at really close range, I mean feet. not yards, creates absolutely horrifying wounds. There are a lot of murders committed with Grandpa's old shotgun across living rooms, with birdshot.
It's true that shotguns and buckshot are not automatic stoppers. On the other hand, If you have a Tennis pattern and your tendency is off, you're hitting the guy with half your pattern. Of course center mass is best, but it is very common to see a single buckshot load hit a guy with four total pellets in the lung, the liver, the elbow, and intestines. Or, t two in the lower face, one in the neckthroat, and one in the shoulder. Or some similar combination. A peripheral hit often means something like a shattered elbow, hand, or humerus. Buckshot also frequently get enough penetration to damage the spine, And also frequently does enough damage to large bones that it becomes structurally impossible for a bad guy to continue the attack. In other words he can't raise his arms or stand up or something.
People don't stand like targets. When a bad guy sees a gun he often turns, ducks, crouches et cetera. Thus, a shot aimed at the middle of the chest can often result in entry wounds on the top of the head and shoulders, as if you shot the guy down from a hot air balloon. It also makes it possible to shoot a guy in the face, shoulder, and beneath a shotgun by accident.
Never even a little bit underestimate the deadliness of a knife. Do not take a guy lightly because you have a gun and he has a knife . Any decent sized sharp knife (6" blade is plenty) WILL (not can) result in very serious injuries when used, and very little skill is needed to use it. After 20 + years of doing this, I am way more afraid of being stabbed by somebody who really wants to hurt me, that I am of being shot with a handgun.
Lastly, I am not at all impressed by either the offensive or defensive capabilities of handguns, but I am rather impressed by both the defensive and offensive capabilities of shotguns. Regardless of who is doing the shooting. That said, handguns can be really, really deadly, esp. at close range, and no matter what, the gun you have in your hands is the best one to use in the moment.
Letting the "short stroking" joke slide damn near killed him....
I was thinking the same thing. It was a valiant effort too. Haha
#2: Yuuuup. There seem to be quite a few people under the impression that shotguns behave exactly like an aerosol can. "You ain't even gotta aim with a shotgun!" is one of the few things I simply cannot help but correct if I overhear someone say it.
Even worse, think of it this way. If those people truly believe it's capable of killing everything within a 5 - 10 ft cone in front of them, they're saying they don't care about collateral damage.

We all have outlaw tendencies. :)
I personally use a remington 11-87 with a smooth bore buck barrel (cyl bore) with #9 bird shot...why you ask? Because here in Upstate NY even though the "bad guy" has a weapon and is in your house threatening you it is VERY frowned upon to shoot him/her and kill him/her/they/them. In most cases it would end with you in cuffs and a manslaughter charge. #9 bird shot is tiny, packs enough punch that it will hurt like hell at 20 feet, it will not penetrate most walls in a house from 20 feet away and #9 has the most pellets per shot. I don't want to kill anyone. Even if they're robbing my house. So one shot of #9s to stun the intruder(s) and hold them down until the law gets there. With the cyl bore 18.5" buck barrel the pattern is about 5'x5' at 15 yards so it's damn hard to miss. Most intruders won't enjoy 100 tiny hot lead balls 3" in their skin and will either fall down and cry or run away. Either way it won't kill them and it won't kill my kids in the next room. Thats an important thing....in the heat of the moment you could forget that your child is sleeping in the room on the other side of that wall. 00 buck, slugs, rifle and pistol rounds will fly right through the person, the wall and your kids. #9 doesn't have that kind of energy per pellet, I've tested it. But it's enough to stop any threat.

A comment about aiming. The shotgun is a very instinctual weapon. You don't have to consciously aim it..no sights to line up. Scope to look through. Red dot to find etc.
Laser would be handy perhaps.
But it takes 100's or 1000's of rounds to develop that "instinct ". The gun stores are doing a disservice by not telling customers that and loosing the sale of a couple cases of ammunition and perhaps a Laser
If someone does not fear a shotgun being pointed at them, then they simply don’t care to die. And I have yet to hear anyone surviving 00 buck or a slug to the chest in a close encounter.
