From my perspective, Little Monsters (Lady Gaga fans) were one of the first fandoms that started with dressing up in costumes for concerts, especially since Gaga's fashion was so extravagant and avant garde in the early 2010's.

Maybe I'm too cheap, but I already spent money on the ticket... I'm not going to spend extra money on a special outfit. Due to the money, I spent on the ticket I want to be able to maximally enjoy the concert, so I have no problem dressing comfy (t-shirt and sneakers for me). No one is going to pressure me into wearing something that would hinder me from enjoying this concert.
I absolutely do not care if you dress super glamorous for a concert, I just hope is doesn't take away from the actual experience. Maybe we need to focus on the artist you came to see instead judging other people's outfits.

The issue with having size inclusive clothing is that every 3/4 sizes required a different pattern, since you can’t make what fits a size 2 in the same dimensions but bigger. So you need more money and resources to make it. Also the sample size matters to, i.e what measurements are used for the initial design.
That being said, I’m a plus girly and if you are a business these are just costs you’re going to have to eat up if you want to be inclusive and EVERY BRAND SHOULD BE THAT WAY.

Honestly I LOVE dressing up for concerts because I get to wear clothes I can´t wear in my day to day life. It always makes me feel like an excited kid again who is playing dress up in my room, with the difference that I have adult money now lol.
I think another factor is that concerts sort of have that "no judgement" vibes, you can just freely express yourself, and I think most people can´t do that in their jobs/normal lives.

I think a large influence on the extravagance of concert outfits was the rise in popularity of K-pop. A lot of the fans want to dress like their bias. Their outfits are complex to catch their attention. I also think that the Korean beauty standard has influenced the popularity of being ‘thin’ and ‘skinny’.

So here for this discussion!! I went to the Harry show in Glasgow last summer and was genuinely so concerned for all of these girls standing in the freezing cold in just mini dresses and heels lol, not even a wee handbag to put your phone and some snacks in?? But I didn’t actually realise how much peer pressure went into the whole fit, and I assume it’s just become more and more of a thing as the tours have progressed. The older sister in me panics because it’s just SAD when you feel pressured and judged to adhere to a norm (of dressing up and putting a LOT of time n effort into it) at an event you’ve been looking forward to for months )): it’s very very privileged too innit

I feel like kpop concerts/events are more open minded and has way more diversity in style, race, and size representation than western (especially if the artist is white) concerts. I've been going to kpop concerts since 2016 and people would just wear whatever they wanted and noone was really shamed for it. In the same concert you would see someone decked in tour merch, another in an expensive dress, and someone else in an outfit they made by hand. I've gone in casual clothes and I also dress up when I want to. It's fun planning outfits. I think tik tok and other social media made dressing up a little more common than before, and the pandemic made everyone want to go out and be as extra and have as much fun as possible. Maybe younger kpop fans feel a bit more pressured.

  • @ilymoontosaturn
    @ilymoontosaturn Год назад +13

the harries are very easy to recognize by their outfits, it's very cute and cool. and it's true, the lack of representation for plus sizes is very frustrating.
i've never been to a concert, until now, I'm going to the eras tour, and im planning to wear shorts, and my very first merch from her (rep snake t-shirt), but all i see on social media are people with totally glamorous and smart ideas for their outfits, and it kinda makes me feel bad about myself, first bc i don't like my body, i wear L, and i don't like showing skin.
Everybody is choosing an "era" which is cool, but I'm already feeling sorry about myself already. i know that it's not mandatory, but it feels that way, and i know it's me hi I'm the problem it's me. :(

I went to Harry's concert in Toronto on my own last year. I got the ticket unexpectedly a few days before the concert and was broke at that moment, so I couldn't buy anything new to wear. But I enjoy dressing up daily, especially for fancy events, so I had to make the best out of my wardrobe. I just put on my favorite colorful shirt and a pair of mom jeans. I also painted my nails to match the shirt color and thrifted a purse for $4. And guys, I just felt amazing in all of that cause I loved what I wore. When I arrived at the concert there were many girls my age who'd obviously been preparing for weeks if not months but I didn't feel worse than them at all even though I was dressed much more casually than many people. The atmosphere was surprisingly much kinder than I expected, people I talked to made me compliments and vice versa. Later I discovered that those who dressed really fancy were mostly in the pit and in the nosebleeds where I was seating there were plenty of casually-dressed people (I was probably the most dressed in that section haha). What I also noticed is that nobody really cared about how others were dressed. Like we were gonna see the fucking Harry Styles and everyone was thinking about him and the way they personally looked. Overall, it was an amazing experience, I felt pretty and comfy, Harry did well that night and I got memories I will keep forever.
What I wanna say is that, again, everyone really pays attention only to themselves and the artist. Nobody is going to remember your outfit unless you dress like a menstrual cup I guess. I don`t remember any particular outfit from that day, I only abstractly remember how people were dressed in general. So I believe you don`t really need to worry about what others think, dress the way only YOU want. If your genuine desire is to spend $1000 to dress like a mirrorball for the Eras Tour - do it, but if you want to wear a one-year-old t-shirt you wear to college - also do it and don't care. Even if someone comes to you and judges your outfit the only thing you can do is to be sorry for that person cause imagine how insecure they are

As a plus size musician it is so hard to find clothes that are suitable for me to wear on stage too! 99% of the time I end up just wearing t-shirts and jeans because it's difficult to find clothes that work, not to mention how much more expensive it is!
I think that this can also be seen with the conversation of Sam Smith v Harry Styles and how they have similar styles but people often call Sam Smith's outfits "tacky" and "cheap." Often, stuff that is made for plus size bodies is not made to last and it really shows, and tbh I feel like plus size representation just needs to be more prevalent in the music industry all together, concertgoers and musicians alike.

The funnest concert outfit experiences I have ever been to was the Big Time Rush Forever Tour. Since they had a popular T.V show, a lot of the outfits were inspired from that. Girls were wearing hockey helmets, homemade tree hats, capes of bandanas, and much more. It was honestly a very funny, yet wholesome way to make friends there, since mostly everyone knew the show and the references. I‘m coming from a rather rock concert background when it comes to concert fashion, also known as "artist shirt, comfy-cool jeans, comfortable shoes" and it is great. I‘m not an S and it’s hard in general for me to find good jeans. Also I don’t like to be feeling uncomfortable at concerts, especially when I‘m standing or know that I‘ll dance much (which I usually do).
In April, I‘ll be luckily seeing Hayley Kiyoko and even though I don’t have specific merch from her yet (I‘ll buy it at the concert, if everything works out), I‘ll be continuing with my "dresscode" and wear a Kraftklub shirt.

I find there isn’t just an expectation to dress up, but to dress up in a very specific way or certain aesthetic for a specific band/artist. Even if you put a lot of thought into your outfit and you absolutely love it and feel great about yourself there will be stans that will ridicule you for not fitting their expectations of what specific type of clothing you should wear.

about the fashion subject, it's sad because the only affordable clothes that are size inclusive is from shein. I'm normally a size 14 but I have to buy size 16 trousers and jeans bc my waist is bigger and shein trousers is the only online shop that is inclusive in sizes even though its bad for the environment

I’m glad I go to the type of concerts where people just wear normal outfits. I don’t understand why you would dress up for a concert in an uncomfortable outfit if you actually like music the artist makes. I think a lot of these girls at Harry Styles concerts just dress up to look good at the concert, not to be comfortable and to be able to dance and enjoy the show.

For me concert outfits are heavily influenced by parasocial relationships. I can listen to music without caring about an artists style and therefore not wanting to dress up like them. It should be okay for me to go to the concert for the music and enjoy myself. I am aware that the artist is not gonna notice me and is not going home and talking about my outfit (nor do I want them too). I’m there to look cute in my own way and to have a good time, not to judge anybody’s outfits.

I kind of have to disagree. When I go to K-pop concerts and see everyone dressed up, it’s more a sense of community and interest everyone shares. People are dressed nicely matching their favorite music video or fav stage outfit, it’s really cool. Everyone ends up talking to each other while in line about how cool the outfits are. It’s also kind of fun to dress up. My outfits are quite plain in comparison to others, but you can tell that everyone kind of just wants to look good for each other which… has its ups and downs. From my experience, we all are there to look nice, and jam out to some bangers.

i so love the idea of clothing as a vehicle to identity and fan culture and at its core community (like i loved walking the streets and seeing girls in feather boas and knowing exactly why and feeling a kind of kinship with them) but i agree that fashion is a fan identifier which by design is not inclusive 🥲 my harry outfits brought me so much stress and not being able to find things last minute in my size was the worst feeling

I’ve only been able to afford to go to one Harry concert and I was worried for my fit since 1. The typical style everyone wears is the opposite of what I feel comfortable wearing, and 2. Im a Caribbean girl going to a strange and cold country😭can’t exactly show leg or midriff for practical reasons. So, I settled on recreating fine line era Harry fits that lean more towards sweater vests and dress pants. I thrifted a lot of stuff, I was warm and felt like I represented my artist. I felt cute☺️. When I got to the venue though my confidence flew out so quick😵‍💫 People thought I was coming home from work, lost or thought I worked at the venue. I was in a foreign country already feeling like a stranger and among the boas and glitter and cowboy hats, I felt wayyy underdressed. But as the evening got colder, I realized I had made a good decision. And during the concert, what I was wearing was the last thing on my mind. Danced and screamed the night away even :) Would I wear something different if I ever go to another Harry concert? Yeah honestly I would. But that’s the cool thing about that experience, I realized that it’s not following a specific concert style that makes me confident in what I wear, the goal should be to wear what makes me feel good in my skin!💃🏾

i dont normally comment on youtube videos but i watched your video while i was painting my bedroom and i really did love it and relate.
my most recent concert was for a band i never thought id see live and i wanted to dress up extra crazy. even my dad did, we are both huge fans of this band and we did want to mimic their fashion. but as i was getting changed i just kept on toning it down, down, down to a tshirt and some shorts. and we got there and i just kept staring at my huge thighs in the seat. it bothered me the whole show, just thinking about how fat i was and how everyone else there was dressed so amazingly and having fun and all i could think about was how monstrously huge i was. i started counting calories again that night because i felt so badly.
my favorite band just got back together and im so excited to see them this summer. im still counting calories but i cant stop thinking about “what ill do” if im not a more acceptable weight by then. and it really really sucks because going to shows is about the music, seeing an artist you love live, and not about how you look.
i just feel like that in general in public, that i am unsightly and i often get changed a few times before my outings because i think about what is “acceptable” for a fat person to wear. i will tone down my outfits a lot because i am very afraid of people teasing me. but it especially sucks when it is at a show, because you might miss your favorite song because you are thinking about how big you are.
    thank you for your video.

I've never heard of it being an issue to dress casually for a concert, like most of the ones i've been to have a lot of people dressed causal and only a few people dressing up in the theme of the artist because 1. its an effort and some people are coming straight from work 2. its always either too hot or too cold in the venue and you kinda have to dress practical 3. if youre in pit, people are gonna spill drinks on you. I feel like no one actually cares apart from people who spend too much time on insta and tiktok, this is such a non issue 😭.

Will you reaaally be the talk of twitter if you go in a t-shirt and sweats, tho? I think that’s giving way too much importance to what happens online and all. You go to a concert and you’re just one of the thousands of people who are there to enjoy the same thing, and that’s fine! It’s sad to me to think that many, especially younger people, are gonna be stressing about that as if there’s always an audience watching their every move, cause like I can’t tell you how much you’re NOT gonna be perceived (and that’s a good thing!!).
Bottom line is, nobody is gonna care so do whatever makes you happier. Does dressing up and finding a cool fit enhance that experience for you? Then go for it and rock it! Do you just wanna be comfy? You and a lot of us, buddy, don’t even worry about it! You’re all there for the artist, the music, and the experience, who cares about what other people online think!

The expectation of extravagance is so strange to me. I am constantly overdressed, but I don't judge others because they're not. The first concert I went to was manly attended by middle aged men, and they could not care less about what they were wearing. T shirts and shorts was the dress code for them. I was probably the most dressed up person there, and I was wearing what is a casual outfit to me. Did I care? No, of course not! Their choices are their own and I was there to have fun. It's wild to me that people care so much.

Looking back I'm an idiot like I wore 3/4 black pants that were like thin pink pin stripped then my top was I think pink top with a collar & then a black vest & I was in the mosh. Why 13 year old Jackie why? Wish I had a pic but idk where would be maybe film/digital camera idk
I feel like Taylor fans & Gaga fans had a hand in fans dressing up more(not saying they created it/started it) A lot do Taylor fans usually dresses up as her back in like fearless/speak now days. Gaga fans would try recreate her looks from videos or carpets.
I usually only dress up for Taylor Swift concerts to a tour look or music video look. I usually just wear normal clothes tbh & for Jonas brothers finally seeing them live I wore their merch. I kinda dressed up for miley bangerz in a sequin dress but yeah I usually go comfy. I'm not a big Harry but I might go to his concert next month if there's tickets the week of in Sydney but I'm not dressing up like others cbb it's summer & stadium will be so hot.

The reason the clothes in the plus size range are not the same/aren’t as attractive has nothing to do with the cost of patterning. It’s mostly to do with brand aspiration and fatphobia. The clothing available in the larger sizes is different because it is a generally held marketing strategy that a brand is more desirable and people will pay more for it if only the skinniest people are ever seen wearing the most attractive designs. It’s also why a lot of brands don’t have a larger size range. The exclusivity allows them to charge more. It’s also why plus size ranges don’t vary as much in silhouette. They don’t want to associate certain silhouettes with larger frames.
This is why I generally buy from ethical slow fashion brands or make things myself.
