Great video rob. There is so much bad information on these pumps and only some good. You did a really great job explaining not only the adjustments but also what each one does and how they work. Cheers Dan
Been watching all your videos about ve stuff and it’s so helpful getting a good explanation vs what you read on forums and elsewhere online! Thanks again
Good video thx. Been fighing a ve pump from a local shop. Always tests good. Ended up having to up the fuel screw. So I have to set this thing up from scratch
Awesome video, I’ve been having problems with my truck high idling after I did my fuel pin, power screw, and 3,200 rpm governor spring. But you answered my question! My power screw is turned in too far.
I had a buddy buy a 92 like mine to another buddy with the afc tinkered with. He would never let me adjust it. Guy he sold it to asked why it blew so much smoke. Told him how to adjust it and he told me that it actually had more power and way better fuel mileage
Does re-indexing the throttle arm on the spline do anything? I told my pump builder that my car was running like crap, even after backing out the enrichment screw. They told me that i should take off the throttle arm and turn the screw counter-clockwise a mark, then reintstall arm, see how it runs, repeat. Its a tdi motor with the same pump. 12mm. Smokes far too much at idle, and if you turn the enrichment screw up it rev hangs, runs like crap, and smokes like crazy.
I own a 1 ton 4x4 dually 99 NV 4500 ,,5spd,,,,,,never even wanted a diesel,,,I knew this truck a good long time,,never turned up,,never in front of a pulling sled,,,mostly farm truck small farm,,,so the fella prices it to me at a unbelievable price,,at the time I bought it,,,bank valued it in the neighborhood of 14,000. + ,,,I gave $3500😉 I about broke my neck Goin to get the cash,,,so now I own a mini freight train,,,what a beast,,,all the maintenance clearly done spot on all its life,,uses maybe 1/8 quart oil at 10,000 mile intervals,,never almost never smokes,,,,,,,so after a 1yr + owning it an just cheesin all the time Mmmm! I have a similar pump on my renault crewcab diesel it has suddenly started playing up and then tickler only. And finally not starting at all . I took of 4 screws holding diaphram to check for splits ,it was looking good . So I put the metal needle and spring and diaphram back into location. Then tried turning key to see if the pump was working as no diesel was coming into fuel filter. But on turning key no movement of diaphram up or down. Dose this mean the pump is broken.
Great video I am a mechanic and I do work on these a lot. Amazon or whatever. Where do you think the best place to pick up a fuel pin have any specifics place and part numbers?
Go over the internal pin that rides on the fuel pin ramp. Sometimes they seize up and no matter how much you turn the pump up it’ll still have low power if the internal fuel pin is seized
My pump was adjusted by the previous owner. Before I turn in my fuel screw like you suggest. Is there any way to find out how much it's already turned in? Is there factory presets outlined in the pump manual?
is there any difference in the fuel pin/gov spring on a 3.9 vs 5.9L ? nobody talks about that and there are few pins out there that are specifically for a 3.9.
If not trying to kill the factory auto 92* model truck and wanting just a little extra maybe say 200-220hp what would you recommend doing ? Gov spring for sure and pin ? At that power level would you be better off putting a 2nd gen lift pump on too?
Great video , just after some help , iv recently converted a tractor from a cav pump to a bosch ve , the engine used to rev to around 2600rpm now its max rpm with the bosch pump is 2000 rpm , what would i have to do to get the 2600rpm is it as simple as adjusting the screw or will i have to dive into the pump ? Appreciated for any help
So If I were to only turn the smoke screw up it would roll more coal? I dont want to mess with my fuel just because Im new to this but I want it to roll coal
👍👍👍Don't have a 1st gen on the road at the moment..plan on it eventually...have got a 6BTA(VE). in a timberjack log skidder that have messed with a while back to get it smoke less and spool better...by messing with the aneroid pin, previous screw and starwheel obviouslyl...but...I may have boost leak or something too..not sure..may have to do something with the turbo so it's more responsive...idk... we'll figure it out...
I heard in an another one of your vids, that the early model VE pump can use black diesel. my question is if, If i plan to run alternative fuels is it worth the extra money to buy a P pump truck vs VE? Thanks
Would you do the 3200 spring and pin on a pump somebody else has dicked with? Mine revs to 2800 and rolls a little coal under hard acceleration. No idea how it is with a trailer yet. I picked it up from someone who did a dirty Cummins swap on a squarebody.
I just picked an old 93 d20 and it hasn’t seen the road in 20 plus years. I was told the old timer stopped driving it because it “ran away” I ended up getting it started after a ton of work and then it ran away and I was able to shut it down. I need to figure out a way to prevent us. Looking for a good starting point and you’ve given me a couple solid starts. Has this ever happened to you? What’s the first couple remedies you would suggest
Good vid Rob! I got the spring and THD fuel pin. I put the pin in and had low boost like under 5 psi at WOT, until I got it up to about 35 MPH then the boos came up to about 8-10 psi. I put the stock pin in and boost came back. I read some guy saying to remedy low boost to back off the star wheel so you build more boost off the line. Others have said to run it down. The fuel pin worked great while the boost was there but it was a dog while it was below 5 psi. Can you elaborate on this.
I bought a used pump for my dad's 93 cummins the guy I got the pump from put a 3200 gov spring in and when I put the pump on my dad's truck the truck went wide open but we were able to shut it down with the key ....would that be something related to the power screws if it was turned in to far ?
Hey Rob can you take a look at a 19 seconds video I posted about my 6.7 Cummins knocking sound. With your experience on Cummins you might be able to knock what it is. Thank you!
Just curious, is that an intercooled pump or non-intercooled pump? I ask, because I just bought a fummins swapped excursion and can't determine what the donor vehicle was
Years ago in The magazine diesel power they did a project called rust bucket and it was the first GEN and it had to be pumping when I got done playing with this truck it was torn about 900 hp and got great fuel economy they change the transmission to lock up torque converter and things like that you know that she injectors and exhaust and this truck ran good strong David pump and will never make as much power as the pump but it’s a nice little palm gets the job done all right this is six in a

I would have to do a video to answer this for you. But might be a bit as I swapped right now
love this vid. to the point and full of good info. i HATE videos where guys cant help but run their mouths about nonsense
Excellent. Just found u and subscribed. Very informative 👍
Welcome aboard!
do you need to adjust the power screw if you do the afc adjustment thing?
Nope
😁 I was waiting to the shout-out on the idle screw!
😉
Gokd video Rob great explanation on what to do.

Nope same thing

I would do both. The trans will take it if you drive the same way as you did before. But those convertors do like rpm and the extra power.

Should rev more than 2000rpm stock.
So some must me out of adjustment or you have low fuel pressure.
Can put a high rpm spring in it as well if wanted
@@CUTTERUPROB thank you I shall look into it
Which way turning the rubber on the feul pin does what?
You need to pull the pin so you can see where it is to start with
Im hoping this will fix my white smoke issue and its just out of tune. Any suggestions?
Can be tuning
How would you make it more fuel efficient. I'm building obs f150 with 4bt
All in the tuning and playing with the setup
So If I were to only turn the smoke screw up it would roll more coal? I dont want to mess with my fuel just because Im new to this but I want it to roll coal
And I dont want my engine to be affected too much
👍👍👍Don't have a 1st gen on the road at the moment..plan on it eventually...have got a 6BTA(VE). in a timberjack log skidder that have messed with a while back to get it smoke less and spool better...by messing with the aneroid pin, previous screw and starwheel obviouslyl...but...I may have boost leak or something too..not sure..may have to do something with the turbo so it's more responsive...idk... we'll figure it out...
But obviously it's different tuning a 30,000 lb machine compared to a 6,000 lb pick up
Turbo will help. Just make sure you have a egt gauge
About how much hp and tq is added when you do the basic things you showed here? I appreciate the video.
I would say 50-80 depends on the engine and mods
Someone messed with the truck before I got it. They turned the power screw up. How should I set it back to factory?
just turn the power screw out a bit till in has the power you want
So should I start with the smoke screw at the top or bottom?
Bottom then back out
How do you adjust the idle on these? I've tried everything doesn't seem to work
I will do a video
@@CUTTERUPROB keep us posted on when you're uploading it

only so many things can be done, no reason not the play with it if you want more

Need to do some tuning. Put you steer wheel down all the way and add some smoke screw and start there
Hey man I'll pay you to help me figure out why my ve is leaking out of the little black hose thing coming off near the top.
Must of the time if it leaking from the vent. Pumps needs rebuilt
My is problem leaking from brief hole ve pump vacuum, why i am not sure.. what can i do?...
if you mwan the vent on the back of the pump , the for the fuel is likely the issue
Did you make a new tuning video yet?
I haven’t. I will be soon as I have my buddies truck to do them with now
Right on, I'll be interested to see how to make clean power and recommendations for tuning with black diesel. Not sure if that would make a difference
The plastic piece is called the fun police, it will stop fueling around 15psi, so for vehicles running higher boost... Put it in that glovebox....

If the spring is installed right ya it’s likely the power screw
I'm new to this, where does/did the spring come from and how does it go back in?? Just found your channel and like what I'm seeing!!
which spring we talking about

Would an rpm spring @ 3200 be beneficial on a boat
Get faster rpm but other then that no
