    While we’ve done some other videos about how the left leg works in the golf swing, we still get questions. So, in this video I’m specifically talking about how your left leg works during the downswing.
    We’ll go over how much it should bend or straighten and when. We’ll also look at internal and external rotation of the left leg and how to match up all of the pieces for your swing.

    Terrific explanation on why external rotation of lead knee from the top is so imprtant to commence the downswing to get the necessary degree of hip rotation for the rest of the downswing.. Very insightful observation that had escaped my attention . Thank you..

    Just watched Milo Lines talking about tracing a circle with the lead knee. I had been focusing on moving my lead hip/glute behind in transition. After working on knee action I find that movement automatically moves the hip behind and rotation is much better. Proper sequencing is the key. Good stuff here!

    Wow... What a brilliant lesson!You told me what I really wanted to know exactly. Thanks.I really like your lesson because you always mention different swing style, not just telling one.Most of the teachers on youtube just teaching one type of swing that is his own style and it makes us confused because we amatuer golfers have different body and swing mechanism. You always give us the choices those are suitable for each person learing golf.Great job you've done. !!

    Thanks for your perspective on this topic. Many RUclips instructors discuss this aspect but did not present it in a way that hit home for me. As I age, I've found my swing rotation, both back and down, has been affected more than I realized. I appreciate the kinetics discussion to help me understand this point.

    Eric, did I miss you talking about "swinging both the knees"?
    It seems to me that thinking of swinging the knees is an easier concept than just swinging just the one knee out...
    McElroy seems to swing his knees..
    and if the knees are swung from the top of the swing, the left gets where you describe where you want it to be, and the right swings back into a braced right leg position...both good
    your thoughts on thinking in this manner....
    thanks for the vid...

    • @CogornoGolf

      In general....you would want to re plant it as the trigger to start the downswing...

  • @pohoresky
    @pohoresky 4 года назад +2

    Another observation is that the downswing is to be coordinated with the external rotation of lead knee into impact .i.e. they (arms hands) both move down at the same rate as the knee externally roatates. They need to be synced up.

  • @JeffRAX

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 месяца назад

      Thanks Jeff!
      The weight shift forward with the hips ideally starts around lead arm parallel in the backswing/P3 while the hips and shoulders are still rotating closed up to the top of the swing/P4.

    Eric thanks for the lesson. I am guessing you do not need to think about pulling down with your arms when you rotate your left leg? They just fall into place naturally until you start additional rotation?

  • @aaronmccardie8795
    @aaronmccardie8795 4 года назад +2

    I've tried over the years in some sort of way trying to improve my rotation in down swing sequence ,for me I have a hard time being successful with this due to my lower back pain and am reluctant just incase my back goes all of a sudden .also if I do this motion with the right knee to a certain degree i pull alot of shots to the left .am 50+ now and unfortunately not very flexible as i used to be.

      Yes it can, especially the meniscus. I flare the lead foot out and also try to copy Bubba Watson where his lead foot lifts and turn with his leg so there is no extra strain on the left knee.

    Hi Eric good basic explanation does the movement of the left leg or knee on the down swing have anything to do with the low point of the swing thanks for your help kindly advise Jack

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 месяца назад

      Thanks Jack!
      It definitely plays a part, yes!
      To keep it really simple...you have a lower center (think belt buckle) and an upper center (think shirt buttons).
      If one or both centers move back during the downswing, the low point moves back.
      If one or both centers move forward during the downswing, the low point moves forward.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi Eric, is there any correlation with the left glute and left heel?

  • @openminded1923
    @openminded1923 4 года назад +1

    SO if I tried to straighten the left leg last week. But the effect was that i started to top the ball. Could that have been cause I didnt add right side bend to the upper body? Might add that Im kind of a low launcher of the ball and interested in trying to launch it a little higher. But at the same time Im thinking that increasing right side bend would lead to my left hip raises earlier and that would make me top the ball even more?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад +1

      Hey George....if you are to raise up something on your left side, something on your right side would have to go down to even it out...yes.
      Ofcourse I would have to see your swing to say specifically what you need to do

    Eric I have tried to keep my left leg flexed longer to add power but always hit fat shots. I always make better contact when straightening the left leg before the club is parallel to the ground. I’m thinking it’s because I have short legs and long body? Great video

    Eric - One thing you didn’t mention is that most instructors till tell you you’re supposed to shift some weight left before all of this left leg externally rotating and bending, but you didn’t. I’ve never figured out how to do this move with weight left while at the same time increasing flex in my lead leg.
    Any suggestions?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Think PRESSURE down and forward more than BODY SHIFT should help. Like your body is floating forward.

    • @scottharmon5583
      @scottharmon5583 4 года назад +1

      Eric Cogorno Golf OK that makes some sense. Is this the ‘float-load’ concept people talk about? I’m supposed to start it before end of backswing?

      Eric Cogorno Golf Eric, this is good, too, thanks a ton. The lead leg/rotation stuff, sit, squat, re-flex, all make sense and I know they’re correct because everyone teaches them. The part I struggle with personally, because I’ve always been a pusher with my trail leg into lead side / early extender, is how I’m supposed to get my weight left if not by pushing. Clearly it needs to get there, or all of this ends up being a reverse shift. All I can come up with is a fall toward the lead side. Is that right?

  • @Construct87
    @Construct87 3 года назад +2

    My knee kicks out and rotates a lot - just what happens for me and feels natural when swinging. I had a trainer once who tried to force me into not doing it and telling me it'd mess up my swing which was bs. You can't force once specific set of movements on any human being just because you read about it in a book.

  • @TooHonestButtTrue
    @TooHonestButtTrue 3 месяца назад +1

    One thing I would add is the external rotation occurs slightly before the top of the backswing. This is really important for timing. All your practice shots showed this.

  • @simmo5071
    @simmo5071 10 месяцев назад

    Obviously you shift weight to the lead leg prior to the knee rotation. Although you look like your arm is coming down at the same time. A lot of folks claim the club is still going back as the weight shift to lead leg has occurred.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  10 месяцев назад

      Arms going back as the pressure starts moving forward ideally yes but by the time you see the actual mass of body moving the arms will start coming down
