SOLVED**Microwave stopped working. Loose or bad Thermal Fuse!

  • Опубликовано: 5 сен 2024
  • My microwave stopped working while my wife was using it. After checking the breaker box and realizing that no fuses where tripped, I decided to take the microwave apart and see what I could find. I found that the thermal fuse was loose and just needed to be secured. It is also possible that you may need to replace your thermal fuse.
    **Since posting this video, it has been brought to my attention that you may have to discharge the capacitor for your own safety.*
    I recommend you have a professional look at your microwave but if you are adventurous like me, please make sure you unplug the microwave before you take it apart. Also make sure you stay clear of the capacitor.

    Just wanted to post here in the hopes that I help someone that had the same issue I had with the Samsung Model #ME21M706BAG. Microwave stopped working randomly. Took it apart and checked the fuses and they were fine. Left me scratching my head. Found this video and a similar part on my model and sure enough, even though it didn't LOOK loose, after I fiddled with it the microwave worked. I love the internet, thanks for uploading.

    I had a similar problem with our GE microwave and never would have been able to fix it with out a video like this. I was actually looking at new $400 microwaves and decided to check RUclips. A $12 thermal fuse from Amazon did the trick. So, thanks!

    I have a Frigidaire microwave that just went out. I checked it, and found that a fuse blew. I replaced the fuse, but it won't run. The light stays on like it is on, but won't run. I checked all of the door switches for continuity. And they were good. I'm Lost as of why it won't work.

      Which fuse did you check? If it was the narrow cylindrical fuse that Brian points out at 4:19, I have the same issue on my Samsung. I was sure this fuse had blown, and because it's cheap to replace, I broke it open to see if the if the wire had fused open (I didn't own a multimeter at the time). The wire was fine. It turned out that the thermal fuse described in this video is the issue, which I was able to determine because I had bought a multimeter in the meantime. The only reason I haven't gone ahead replaced the thermal fuse and remounted the microwave is that I think I ought to know the underlying cause.

    That unknown part is a thermal switch ...typically a high heat safety which opens on high temp and shuts down the control circuit

      kirk chapman what could set it off? I’ve got into a baked potato trend recently..cooking a couple at a time, for an average of 11min and it steams the heck out of the interior walls/roof even when I wrap them in paper towel.
      My problem actually started though, when my finger “stuttered” while hitting the start button. Causing it to start/stop in a flash which feels like it may have tripped something. Has happened many before but this time no deal. But again, LED still goes on when first plugged in , just like in this video..same exact deal. I have an Oster#OGG61101, if your familiar with it? AND THANK YOU ROB FOR THIS VIDEO!!!

    Please show in your video how to correctly "de energize" the internal capacitor that stores thousands of watts of ac power & could potentially kill someone if they're a "DIY" type of person that has little knowledge of how these things work. I used to be a HVAC tech in my uncles business & thats one of the first things he taught me when removing the cover off a highly electrical energized piece of equipment. As he pointed to the capacitors that vary in shape & size from round & tublar to being odd shaped they can easily be identified. He was "old school" & worked alot of things "HOT" meaning they were still energized or still had electricty or some of other form of electrical power running thru them but while I was a apprentice. great video though! very informative, thank you & the best to you & your family!!!

    This is a great video except for one thing. Viewers need to be warned about the high voltage capacitor, which can deliver a lethal shock even if the appliance is unplugged. You can simply avoid touching the capacitor, or you can discharge it with two well insulated screwdrivers or similar tools; anything with a thickly insulated handle and a long thin metal part. There are videos on how to do this, but the basic idea is that you touch the end of one screwdriver against one terminal of the capacitor, then place the other screwdriver so that it touches the other terminal, while at the same time laying it across the first screwdriver, like an "X".

    • @BrianRobinsonCoaching
      @BrianRobinsonCoaching  6 месяцев назад

      Appreciate the words of wisdom. Other experts have said the same warning and I thought I had pinned one to the top a few years ago so viewers are warned. I will try to pin this one too! Thank you for commenting and giving us wisdom.

  • @aerlial360

    The loose piece is a thermal fuse or high-limit cutoff. If it fails you need to replace it. It fails like any other fuse to prevent damage to the microwave or prevent a fire. Lots of appliances that have heat have them,, like ovens and dryers.

      I have possibly a similar situation. My fuse looks similar to his where the one connection looks brown inside. Is that showing something overheated or is that normal?
      Have checked the 3 door switches yet, but did change one of them out about 2 years ago

    • @aerlial360
      @aerlial360 4 года назад

      @@MichaelSilliman74 Use a digital muiltimeter to check for continuity, i.e. that electricity is able to flow through the fuse from one of its spade connectors to the other. Put it on the lowest setting for Ohms, usually 10 Ohms, or better yet, right next to that is Ohms with Tone. Put the black multimeter probe on one of the fuse's connectors and the red probe on the other. If you get a tone, the fuse is good. If not, it's bad.

    I stop using my microwave altogether because of what it does to my food. I use my toaster oven instead. If I have to use something big I will use my conventional oven. The microwave ruins my food because it heats it from the inside out making the food hard in the center area. My food also TASTES different from my toaster oven and my conventional oven. The taste is much more normal and better than the microwave.

    I had a similar problem with a similar oven/microwave set-up but it is a convection/microwave. I am not sure if I should spend $100 for a GE tech to come over plus pay for parts and labor, or if I should just replace it with a regular microwave GE. The replacement would be another $500 if I include the installation and new trim kit. I read it is usually the magnetron that breaks which is an expensive repair. Any suggestions? It only worked for three years.

    I have 2 LG microwaves, one from 2012 LCRT2010ST and one from 2017 LCRT2010ST/01. They both run and have lights, but neither will heat. The 2012 unit has a ceramic line fuse with 250V 20A. The 2017 unit has a glass fuse with 5000 V 0.95A. No one sells the 0.95A. The glass fuse was visibly blown, but replacing it with a 5000 V 0.9A fuse did not correct the problem. I replaced the ceramic fuse in the 2012 unit with the same result, ie, still running but not heating. I was wondering about the thermal fuse but don't know where it is. Microwaves are supposed to last 10 years. The first one lasted five years. The newer one died after 4 years. I don't want to replace the magnetron, but is there is any chance I could get these working by replacing some other fuse?

      @@tampabaybuccaneersfan7904 I believe his Samsung is $250 , so probably a tad nicer than the 50 buck ones from Walmart you keep buying for your trailer . Ours was $399 about 15 years ago and just had to put a $50 magnetron in it and it's working fine again . Not much to a microwave that can go wrong so they are simple to troubleshoot . One word of caution though , just because it is unplugged doesn't mean it can't cause you serious harm or death . The power supply and capacitors can store a lot of energy so one must still be extremely careful when disassembling .

    How did you know the internal fuses weren’t working?

      I actually banged on it and it worked then stopped again. When I took it apart is when I saw that there was a fuse problem.

      Every time you turn on the microwave, after a moment it short circuit/shutt off. That means an electric element is overheating and the fuse could not protect it so the system shutt off.

    This guy is dangerous and could identify a thermal couple or over temp sensor for a ground and didn't identify the dangers of the capacitors look at Jack Jensen replied and his link.

    Some kind of grounding mechanism??? It's called a fuse! You really shouldn't be trying to make educational videos on microwaves.
