  • In this review I look at the newly launched TomTom GO Discover and pit it against the TomTom GO Premium and the latest version of the iOS app.
This TomTom SatNav includes more processing power and features at a reduced cost, but strips away integrated SIM support for data and the unlimited traffic and speed camera subscription. Is the Discover still worth it?
    0:00 - Introduction
1:08 - Why you should consider a dedicated SatNav in 2021
2:18 - Overview and benefits of the TomTom GO Discover
3:50 - Which TomTom GO Discover size should you buy?
5:25 - Test drive with the TomTom GO App vs Premium vs Discover
8:34 - An overview of the menu system changes
11:42 - My dislikes of the TomTom GO Discover
    13:15 - Battery life
13:45 - Conclusion and final thoughts
I include footage of the SatNav's in users well as my thoughts on the two top tier sat-navs.
If you want to buy the new TomTom Go Discover or Premium, please consider doing so from the following Amazon Associates link, it will cost you nothing but I will earn a little commission from any sales.

Thanks for the comment! They really have, it’s quite mad how far they’ve come in the 14 years I’ve been using them.
It’s a shame they’re going back down the subscription model, I suppose that is what will end TomTom as a brand eventually, but for now I’d much rather use their products than even many built in sat nav devices

I have a GO 610. Bought it new(open box) in 2019 from a local store. Been using it ever since whenever I am in Europe. Lifetime World maps, Speed Camera, Charging Stations, Traffic is the best thing one could ask for. Just connect to your phone for internet and you are good to go. I won't be switching to any newer model unless they have these perks built in.

An excellent review, thankyou sir. I've been using the GO Premium for two whole years. Previously I used the 1005 Live for 3 years. Before that was a 520 and even earlier was the original Tomtom GO. I have been considering the GO Discover, but not any more. The cost of a Discover is not justified by the new features (In my opinion). I'm so pleased to have found your review before I wasted £249 and then having to return the 'upgrade'. So, I'm sorry Tomtom, I'll wait until your next revision (unless anything else takes my fancy in the meantime). By the way, the GO Premium has consistently wiped the floor with my vehicle's in-built SatNav (which is a good one, but just not good enough).

Great review, I am thinking to upgrade my GO 5000 to the Go Exclusive but I can't work out if the live services are by built-in sim of tethering to my mobile phone?
I only really want an upgrade if the traffic is updated quicker than my GO 5000 as it often says there is traffic when if you ignore it the traffic has significantly reduced (or gone all together) by the time you reach the reported congested area, does anyone know? Thanks

I had a Garmin 61 LMT-D and found it had various issues, missing roads frequently, and even when it was better able to receive traffic updates they were near useless. I don't use my sat nav that often but wonder if it's really worth getting the Premium at a discount if it is going to have a slower and less pleasant UI than a Discovery 6" or the 6" Garmin 66. I used the Garmin 66 recently (it was faulty) but even so the menus were hugely better than the 61 even if the routes suggested were out to lunch lol and the road numbers were barely readable as the text was too small and zooming in didn't enlarge the letters of the road name lol. I gather TomTom maps have better detail in them for the UK and the map graphics are better.

Top video geezer thank you! I’ve had a Go 5000 for about 5 years now and though I’ve got the full infotainment rig on my Golf I still like using my TomTom more and drive for a living so use it in the van all the time.
I did think it was time for an upgrade so having just watched this I opted against the Discover and pulled the trigger on the Premium instead.
With 30% off from TomTom direct I went for the X with all the bundled accessories at 257.45 and hopefully I’ll get another 10% cashback from going through CS on top of that too.

One thing I forgot to mention before was that when I was comparing devices on the TomTom website yesterday I noticed each different size of the Discover has a different screen resolution:
      5" screen 480x854 pixels
      6" screen 1280x720 pixels
      7" screen 1280x800 pixels

Is there an advantage of connecting to the mobile with a hotspot, and if yes what is the advantage?
Finally should both bluetooth and hotspot be on or can the bluetooth be disconnected when there is the hotspot? Thanks and look forward to your replies.

Excellent review! My biggest complaint about my older Tomtoms (740go, 1525, and go600) is rerouting time, after I miss my turn. This video's example, at 06:48 shows that the new go discover is "possibly" quicker, than Tomtom's older Premium. The Premium (in this video) is still running the same amount of ram and the same cpu as my go600. I'll stick with my go600, for now.

Thanks for your great review. I'd like you to take a drive with your SatNavs and try a couple of things often not shown on reviews.
    1. Pretend a road you are about to turn down, is closed - and you immediately need to find another route.
    2. Use voice command as you are driving, to navigate to one of your stored locations (I haven't found voice command to work down to that level, where it would be most useful).
I've had a TomTom Go 5100 for a few years and when driving alone, trying to use those above features has not been easy. I have mentioned to TomTom (a few times over the past 3 years) that I'd like a small red button, always visible on the touch screen, that I can press if a road I'm being instructed to take is blocked/closed, so I don't have to press several menus or have to park the vehicle to work the SatNav safely.

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  2 года назад +1

Skip to 06:45 for the first one 🙂 that shows the rerouting.
I don’t do voice commands as they are all crap but I will keep it in mind for next time!

    • @RichardGentle
      @RichardGentle 2 года назад

@@HamerReviews Yes, I saw the bit at 06:45 but that's not quite what I had in mind. I think there's another part of the video where you press on the bottom right of the right hand bar and there's a re-routing option, but I didn't necessarily want the SatNav to reroute me because in my experience, if my original route is the closest way to my destination, it will often take me to the next junction and make me turn around, or otherwise take me a route that takes me back to the closed road - a bit like when you want to avoid a motorway, but unless you go into settings and say 'avoid motorways' the SatNav will still try to get you onto the next point on the motorway.

The GO Suprime is $124 here in the US now. It's a far better value. I've had mine for a few years now and really like it. I don't plan on changing. I also have a GO 50 which is still supported. I have installed micro SD cards in both and don't fear running out of storage. That is another feature they got rid of with the Discover, No SD.

Really enjoyed your review. I wonder if the Discover is somehow a bit DIFF in USA vs GB. What I mean is, the screen is supposed to be high definition here or I forget like,1200 by 800 pixels. You mentioned the screen isn't that great BUT we don't have a TomTom premium model in USA. Other than Discover, all that's available is TomTom Supreme, no PREMIUM. The Supreme also can only get traffic via a cell phone's data..but the screen resolution is HORRID like a cell phone from 10 years ago. I was thinking about getting a Discover but was your Discover screen lacking resolution? I currently own a Garmin Drivesmart 55..and Garmin's traffic has JUST about caught up to TomTom now. But I still prefer the TomTom routing and maps, hence I thought MAYBE I'd check out a Discover... Can you speak to the screen as I mentioned, besides the processor being way faster,, they advertise the screen as being fantastic and didn't seem so from your review? Thanks much...

TomTom gave me a promotional 20% discount and contrary to the description in your video the only future paid for service will be safety cameras (traffic is included free). I was minded to now go for a new Premium but am concerned about the posssible obsolescence of 2G traffic data for a relatively expensive unit. Any advice re this appreciated.

Interesting points. On the services side, good to hear they are including traffic free, however, did they confirm maps were included?
On the 2G issue, I think it's not a problem. If 2G disappears, you can still connect a Go Premium to a phone's wifi hotspot or bluetooth to share data. In fact I often do that on my Premium as my 4G connection is quicker to update than the 2G one.
For me, the Discover is too flawed for the money.

Excellent video. I've used both of them and went back to the Go Premium. Main reasons for this are:
    1. Speed cameras are NOT stored on the Discover - they are only available if connected to a wifi or bluetooth device.
    2. I have created a lot of shorter routes on my Go Premium which have been saved as shorter routes. This option is NOT available for the Go Discover. All routes will convert to the currently defined default, e.g. Faster route, no matter how you have it saved. So My Routes doesn't work as intended.
    3. The current time is NOT shown on the Go Discover.
    4. When destination has been reached, a large box appears on the top right of the screen and doesn't disappear until clicked. Annoying.
    5. Map updates may be shorter, but, if you want to add Full Europe, you have to load each individual country. There is NO option to add Europe as a map.
Other than those shown above, there are other niggly features I didn't like.
On the plus side, the Go Discover has a better menu layout, but I'll stick to my Go Premium for now.

A fantastic review Hamer. The decision I have made is not to buy either based off your review. The Discover is a downgrade from the features on the premium but then the premium has a slower processor and is now a dated model. its too late in the game for TomTom to be bringing out hardware that is top dollar but does not have all the features. its not 2006 anymore where tomtom & garmin were the only game in town. This is 2021 where I can command my big screen smart phone to tell me how to get to a destination and with traffic updates included and all for free. The days of the stand alone sat nav may well be coming to a end. The TomTom Discover does nothing to delay this. it need to be feature rich and bring something to the user a smart phone cannot.

I haven't heard much on losing 2G, I know there has been debate of using the spectrum for other uses. It's a danger. That's a gamble, the 2G Sim usage. I live in Switzerland and 2G has been switched off 2020, Dec.
Even if many people complained, Tomtom still doesn't have an official roadmap about sim generation update, we don't know if they will in future release gps with integrated sim (3g, 4g,.. or whatever...).
I suspect that since 2g was already "old" when sim models came out, Tomtom was able to negociate a good deal with operators; I guess that now they still have to see if they can negociate this kind of service with operators of most countries, and yet it doesn't seem to be in a good way since Tomtom is still saying that ... they can't say anything about this future!

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  3 года назад +2

This is true. From my perspective I actually have my TomTom premium paired to my phone. It uses very very little data and my 4G connection is much faster at updating traffic info than the 2G sim. I realise that is not a solution for everyone!

@@HamerReviews With phone, it's ok when you are in your own country, but when abroad it can add data network $$$. On my android phone, I could not tell it that I want data activated only for the hotspot, the phone itself and apps will also use the data connection (emails checks, whatsapp and so on will regularly access the network). So even if the gps itself doesn't use much data, the cost is higher because it goes through the phone...
It makes me think that in some cases (abroad holidays for a few weeks), the cheapest solution may be to use a cheap dedicated phone, with minimum apps installed, and with a local temporary sim card. But it's of course more stupid than having an integrated sim...

Very interesting to see all 3 of them in different places, at the start the latest physical option seemed the best. If it were a toss up of an upgrade to Apple Car Play with Waze than spending money on a physical unit I’d go with Car Play every time. Having commuted into London exclusively using Waze for a number of years now it is rare to let me down, the only time is does is when there are roadworks started that day! The other nice thing is, if you have a car with a screen, car play avoids sucking things to windscreens which is nice! Long live the car play Waze combo!

I own a Tomtom Go 61 and do not really see their new models worth discarding my gps to get a new one. My go 61 still has lifetime map, traffic and speed camera updates. Its slow but once i give it the destination, it does its job. the discover has a nicer screen and faster menu but on a gps we dont spend much time on the menu anyway, not to mention i can input my destination from my smartphone. though it has a nicer screen, i dont really need a nicer screen to drive.

I use to love TomTom and it was the best nav for me because of the simplicity and design of menu, but they really gone bad because they don’t have user support and they don’t listen to their customers, they really doesn’t care what you think ! On new models you need to pay for everything, and you need to have speed camera subscription, but that doesn’t matter because for example in Germany is forbbiden by law to use that option so you can’t see where the speeding camera is so you always getting tickets for speeding (for 5km/h over you get around 50-60€ and all over Germany for trucks max speed is 80km/h and nobody is driving 80km/h so you are always getting tickets which is crazy, German laws are crazy, they wanna ripp you and TomTom is letting them do it) so it is useless to have subscription for speed cameras at least for me and now because of that reason and many others i will change my navigation system to Garmin !! And so much more is bad with TomTom i don’t want to get into all of that ! TomTom is really bad and don’t buy it…i would reccomend Garmin it is much much better navigation and more professional…
