“Life During Wartime”, the live version, is an absolute MUST. The lyrics are profound (what you’d expect from the title), and the performance is absolutely NOT what you would expect from the title.
Talking heads were and still are huge. A rabbit hole that deff needs travelling. Psycho Killer, Burning Down the House and so many more that im sure you will enjoy. Oh & it's worth checking them out live. Peace Out ✌️
He was imitating a preacher giving a sermon. The Talking Heads released a concert movie. It has this song done live which is amazing. The movie was called Stop Making Sense. It’s widely considered one of the best concert videos of all time. You have to react to all the songs.
His lyric patterns are based on revival-style preachers and his dance in the video is different world religious motions (as seen in the videos behind him.) Also, second checking out Stop Making Sense!
Back in the ‘90s, I had an assistant manager Connie at a bookstore who had a great story. She was hanging out at a small Chicago venue in the late ‘70s watching a New York band called the Talking Heads perform. No one there had heard of them before, but it was a great set. After they finished, Connie was at the bar and started chatting with Tina Weymouth. Tina eventually invited Connie to join the group as they went bar and club hopping that night because she got tired of just hanging around with the guys in the band. Connie said the entire group were really great people to party with!
Talking Heads has that effect on everyone at first..."Huh, what IS this?" They create art. It sounds weird at first, but then you listen carefully and you're smacked upside the head with that aha moment. Love this band...they are a force unto themselves.
When you realize that they met and were formed while attending Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) then you realize that they are artists more than musicians ( in a way)
This song genuinely makes you think. Is your life what you want it to be? Regrets? No regrets? What's more important to you, love or money? But its so much deeper than that! Its such a classic for good reason, and not because of that insane hook!
David Byrne is an absolute genius. The song “life during wartime” live is a must see. Actually that entire concert “stop making sense” is one of the best concert vids ever.
Take me to the River, Burning Down the House, She Was. Talking Heads were a very unique band that made it big on the University Circuit in the North East US. They were very popular here in Canada as we tend to like weird and quirky and David Byrne is all that and more. They were a very unique band and they were absolutely fantastic to see live.
So, this video was choreographed (and yes, it was actually choreographed) by Toni Basil. The one-hit wonder responsible for 'Mickey'. She's actually had a long and very successful career as a dancer and choreographer, working with everybody from Elvis to Bowie. And she and David Byrne are very good friends.
What he's getting at is that every experience we have, every moment of every day is once in a lifetime. No matter how many times we do something, each time is unique or at least has the potential to be unique as long as we actually live in each moment and experience it for what it is. Life. And we only get one chance to live each moment, so don't waste it. You don't want to look back on your life and realize you were merely a passenger and rarely, if ever, the driver.
Agreed, but I think this is describing a moment of epiphany, of realisation of what you described, when the whole paradox hits him. Time, memory, the unreality of apparent reality, the whole caboodle. Dressing like a 50s preacher man, & delivering like one, possessed by holy fire, only enhances the message. Phenomenal piece of art.
Oh man, anytime I hear someone say "Same As It Ever Was" I think of this video and do the arm action (just ask my family lol) . Music drives my life so much at times! LOL As to the question were they very big, that depends on who you ask. They had a lot of hits in the 80s (this was their biggest) most just were not on the mainstream channels. You'd have to listen to college stations or alternative rock stations to find them. Last I heard the lead singer lived in Lawrence, KS just outside of Kansas City and still did shows but that was a while back I heard that. Great reaction! ❤ They are a very quirky band. I'd love to see you react to They Might Be Giants sometime. Your take on them would be so interesting!!! PS... My request are usually to get you out of your box.. 😉
Agreed. My daughter taught herself how to play the guitar during the pandemic. We watched "Stop Making Sense" and "Psych Killer" is always her live closer. David Byrne, bringing families together!😊
Talking Heads were huge back in the day many many hits 😂 Life during Wartime, Psyco Killer, Road to Nowhere, Burning Down the House, And She Was to name a few! So out there different to anything else around then or since! David Byrne lyrical musical theatrical genius. Saw them live back in the day best concert ever!❤😂
“Life During Wartime”, “Psycho Killer”, “Nothing but flowers”. “Burning down the house”, “And She Was” are all great Talking Heads classics definitely worth checking out 👍🔥
Their concert film "Stop Making Sense" is widely considered one of the best music films. It's brilliant and has recently been remastered for the 40th anniversary. Worth a watch. David Byrne recently did a broadway musical American Utopia which was made into a film by Spike Lee. One of the best things I've seen live.
The Talking Heads came around in the early 80’s as part of the Punk scene and quickly joined the New Wave movement. They were a departure from the Hair Bands and Glam Rock that had become trite to people like me who were looking for something different. Their live shows was were totally out of this world. Thanks for the reactions. Peace
I'm so appreciative hearing your takes on these songs that I've heard some a hundred times, or just a few times but know the sound. I used to bartend in SF, CA for a handful of years, and i loved on slow Mondays i could throw a twenty in the jukebox and talk all sorts of music w the regulars. I'm a child of the 80s and spent my teenage afternoons w TRL but i adore hearing about pre-mtv atmospheres. So happy we can continue connecting thru the vibes here. 🔥🤘😎🩵
68 year old woman. Great time for funky music. Grew up in Pasadena Ca. A racially mixed environment and all the great music from the Talking Heads, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, to Commodores “ She’s a Brick House.”
i went to college with these guys. rhode island school of design, which accounts for their visual creativity. mid 70s graduates like me ('75). my fave song is life during wartime but the audio, not the live version. groovy song. lots of world music and funk. then there's tom tom club...
I am glad the message got thru on your first listen. I was young when it came out and used to cringe and appreciate the weirdness but now I get it and love it!
Early on, the band consisted of four art school students, and their music was relatively stripped-down ("Take Me to the River" (cover of Al Green), "Psycho Killer"). Later, the band expanded to include multiple percussionists and back-up singers, their music became more complex, and their stage shows more energetic. This song is from that later period. Other songs you might react to: "Girlfriend is Better," "Heaven," "The Great Curve," "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes on)." Also, two of the band members, Tina Weymouth (bassist) and Chris Frantz (drummer) had a band as a side project called the Tom Tom Club. They recorded a song that's been sampled many times called "Genius of Love." You might enjoy that.
I feel like Road to Nowhere is the mirror of this song. We're on a road to nowhere, join us and don't question it, no philosophical thoughts just come on along.
The bassist and drummer are in a spin-off band, as others here have said. The Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" is basically used for Mariah Carey's "Fantasy". Mariah just sings over the music from the song.
Used to hear them on UMass radio station 91.1 years ago. But I don’t even think it’s a station anymore. I remember requesting the group eDit and their song called Ants and over the radio station the guy was like oh boyyyyyy you know what they’re doing tonight haha
David Byrne (pronounced like "burn") is a performance artist first and foremost. Talking Heads produced some of the greatest experimental rock songs starting in the late '70s and they were huge in the '80s. And their videos are always amusing!
The Talking Heads are acquired taste...... I like many of their songs, but that may be because they were huge videos during the early MTV days. You need to watch the movie "Stop Making Sense" which shows the band playing live in LA, and he puts on an incredible show as well as the band. If you are going to stick to reaction videos, watch "Life During Wartime" clip from the movie. It will blow your mind......
The Talking Heads song "Once in a Lifetime" is about the existential crisis of living life according to social expectations and the harsh reality of time catching up with us:
Only a few singers can move as much as he does on stage and sound almost studio perfect. He has inhuman lungs. You should check out a live video. He's dynamic, and so is the rest of the band.
for any REN fans around.. there is this really sweet project, its a get well soon song for Ren that Wynand Fourie made with a bunch of renegades, its called "love's healing"
I sincerely respect you just for saying you like the uniqueness of it, how it's not "cookie-cutter" like everything else. That's evidence of a strong and open mind. Because that guy's a genius, and usually genius is too far ahead for regular people to appreciate or even see.
I am sure you have heard "Burning Down the House", great weird video and awesome live performance. TH reminds of Primus and Devo in that they went their own way musically and were successful. My personal favorite is Road To Nowhere.
Your reaction to the song is exactly what they were going for. Sometimes, especially with more "artsy" stuff, it's less about "breaking it down" than it is just reflecting on what it brings out in you. Because the thoughts and feelings it invokes are the point. That is the breakdown. And the Talking Heads are always "artsy" under all their weirdness. Recommending the live version of "Life During Wartime" from the "Stop Making Sense" tour.
Ian Curtis and David Byrne .. two of the most influential geniuses in music. Both pushed the envelope, but in different ways. IMHO, you can't overlook them for what they contributed to modern music. It's immense for a number of reasons, some are sonic, others drive right to the structure of their compositions.
One of the groundbreaking Art Rock artists in the 70s. The Velvet Underground invented Art Rock in the late 60s. It's more about the sound and lyrics, MTV era added the visuals, and The Talking Heads were a forefront band in that.
I always took it to mean, appreciate those once in a lifetime events when you have them occur. And yes, kids really help you realize how fast time goes. I feel like my twins were just born and they just had their 37th birthdays. And the house is terribly quiet, and no one around to make any messes. Enjoy those babies every day! The heck with the work that comes with children; enjoy your time, it is so precious.
Agree with you 100%... I'm 70 and had 3 children. My oldest just turned 50 and my twins (boy and girl) will be 45 in February. I stayed home with my kids as long as possible. We did everything we could with them in mind. I've had a wonderful life so far and enjoying the Grandkids now. ❤️😅
Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne does a lot of quirky performance things during his show. But they relate in a way to each song. They had many hit songs. Deep dive Talking Heads. Glad you like it. Love from an 80s kid.
First time posting a comment BP but long time viewer and I have immense respect for you and your reaction style. I love that you have gotten to the Talking Heads. Rock hall of famers and an incredibly influential band. Art students at Rhode Island School Of Design in the early 1970’s…they have a completely unique sound and vision that you got a major dose of in this song. If you have the time, check out the Jonathan Demme movie of their Stop Making Sense tour…the tour de force and epic documentation of this tour ( I saw the tour twice). There are single song segments on YT that you can review, examples Life During Wartime, Take me to the river, Psycho Killer. I look forward to your reviews and reactions so I will go back to my lurker state
This is one of the bands that started at the legendary New York city club CBGBs in the 70s. This was a place that helped give birth to Punk and New Wave in the United States. Imagine going to this place and hearing Talking Heads, The Ramones, Dead Boys, Television, The Patti Smith Group, Blondie or Madonna on any given night.
Ok, song request please. 1st one I don't think you've ever reacted to is Elvis Costello. He had some great songs but I think 'Pump It Up' or 'Allison' would be a good 1st listen. Then there's Joe Jackson's, 'Is She Really Going Out With Him'. Please check them out.
You need to watch the live concert- spectacle with David Byrne called American Utopia. It was released in 2021/2022. He performs the Talking Head hits, but the performance includes choreography, back up vocals, and instrumentation that makes the production in one respect totally bizarre and in another so compelling that you can’t look away. I watched it on a transcontinental flight with serious jet lag and thought I was tripping.
Mi-Sex (also styled as MiSex) is a New Zealand band new wave band originally active from 1978 to 1986. In August 1978 the band relocated to Sydney, where they became the city's "fourth biggest drawcard" within six months. Austaralia adopted them. Another brilliant underated band of the 70's and 80's. This was there #1 hit, with others to follow. ruclips.net/video/m7C28xEJNfI/видео.htmlsi=jBIioCPaxjrA1dT1
David Byrne is the definition of the fine line between genius and madness
Has anyone considered he’s Nicola Tesla reincarnated?
Well said
Bingo Ringo !
Yes!!!!
That's kinda like Frank Zappa, but totally different
As I’m now pushing 60, very few days pass where I don’t ask ‘well, how did I get here?’
I'll be 60 in half a year...think about how the hell I got here everyday anymore
74 & I've still not got a clue.
Right there with you!!😂❤
Yep... and to think we thought we knew it all at 40 🤨
and when you look at the missus and say to yourself this aint my beautiful wife lol
The genius of David Byrne. ❤
Psychokiller, Road to Nowhere, Burning Down The House, And She Was to name a few ❤
Brilliant
EXACTLY
Yes, you need to deep dive Talking Heads, there are too many options Slippery People, My Girlfriend is Better, as another couple... so many....
Got to add Life During Wartime.
You MUST SEE HIS CONCERT WITH ST VINCENT!! BRILLIANT 👍😍!!
“Life During Wartime”, the live version, is an absolute MUST. The lyrics are profound (what you’d expect from the title), and the performance is absolutely NOT what you would expect from the title.
This is one of my favorite performance videos from the movie Stop Making Sense. Well worth watching!
Yes!! Please react to this one!!
Yesssssssss!!!!!!
absolutely!
I was about to recommend the same thing. Such a great song and performance!
Talking heads were and still are huge. A rabbit hole that deff needs travelling. Psycho Killer, Burning Down the House and so many more that im sure you will enjoy. Oh & it's worth checking them out live. Peace Out ✌️

Talking Heads "Burning down the House" you should for sure check out! So good!
Yes. But I really like the live version of BDTH the best.
Live version for sure

“Life during wartime “ is a must
its the last song they ever played together live. at their RnR HOF induction.
Talking Heads has that effect on everyone at first..."Huh, what IS this?" They create art. It sounds weird at first, but then you listen carefully and you're smacked upside the head with that aha moment.
Love this band...they are a force unto themselves.

Was working in a record store...blew our minds.
Have to watch this band live! "LIFE DURING WARTIME" Epic. MUST SEE.
This song genuinely makes you think. Is your life what you want it to be? Regrets? No regrets? What's more important to you, love or money? But its so much deeper than that! Its such a classic for good reason, and not because of that insane hook!

And look where my hand was.
Love Talking Heads! This song takes me back to good times!! ❤

@diogenesagogo That, too, is correct. I like the way you said that.
Talking Heads are phenomenal artistic performers. Absolutely mesmerizing to watch. A must listen in depth.
Best line ever.....´Heaven... Heaven is a place, a place where nothing.... nothing ever happens´!!

They Might Be Giants would be awesome! I’m seeing them on Saturday.
Birdhouse in Your Soul, Don’t Let’s Start, Anna Ng.
I do the exact same thing.
You can't fully appreciate the genius of Taking Heads until you see their performances in the movie, "Stop Making Sense."
Agreed. My daughter taught herself how to play the guitar during the pandemic. We watched "Stop Making Sense" and "Psych Killer" is always her live closer. David Byrne, bringing families together!😊
❤🎶 Water flowing underground 🎶 Into the blue again 🎶 After the moneys gone 🎶 Once in a lifetime 🎶 ❤

One of the many bands that got their start at CBGB's during the 70's in NYC.
“Life During Wartime”, “Psycho Killer”, “Nothing but flowers”. “Burning down the house”, “And She Was” are all great Talking Heads classics definitely worth checking out 👍🔥
Road to Nowhere? In a way the flipside to this song and should be reacted to also
And she was will now be stuck in my head!😊

In concert the whole band are electric, relay high energy. It's theatre & music
I'm so appreciative hearing your takes on these songs that I've heard some a hundred times, or just a few times but know the sound. Talking Heads are a genius band! This song is wonderful, they are mesmerizing to watch and listen to.
Luv this band so much. Saw them perform in NYC more than a few times! It was a state of mind.
i went to college with these guys. rhode island school of design, which accounts for their visual creativity. mid 70s graduates like me ('75). my fave song is life during wartime but the audio, not the live version. groovy song. lots of world music and funk. then there's tom tom club...
You’ve got to do their Psycho Killer! That song is amazing!
"Life During Wartime" and "This Must Be The Place" are two more that you really need to check out from them.
Oh the fun of the 80's!! Raised my kids on this music~
You really need to watch them live. Watch "Life During Wartime" watch the live on stage one.
Watch it with you wife!
"There is water, at the bottom of the ocean." ... Such a crazy lyric. 🤪
I adore watching reactions of music from my high school days. We just felt the music, enjoyed it and danced! Memories unlocked. 😊
I am glad the message got thru on your first listen. I was young when it came out and used to cringe and appreciate the weirdness but now I get it and love it!
I love the instrumentation on this track … was , and still is, quite unique. That driving, hypnotic beat… love it!
If this song is going to hit home with anyone it is a 44yr old.
Saw them in NYC in the late 70s. Mind bending. So many great songs and also maybe the best rock performance film of all time.
Road to nowhere, Wild wild life, Burning down the house
Thank you for your reaction to this. It IS a deep song. Makes me think too
Early on, the band consisted of four art school students, and their music was relatively stripped-down ("Take Me to the River" (cover of Al Green), "Psycho Killer"). Later, the band expanded to include multiple percussionists and back-up singers, their music became more complex, and their stage shows more energetic. This song is from that later period. I had an English teacher in HS that used to babysit Tina and Chris's kids
the "road to no where" is one of my favorites
I feel like Road to Nowhere is the mirror of this song. We're on a road to nowhere, join us and don't question it, no philosophical thoughts just come on along.
Do next from them, these banger's : "Burning down the house ", "Road to nowhere" , "Psycho killer" , "And she was" & "Wild wild life" .
Burning Down the House, Life During Wartime, Psycho Killer, Swamp, Wild, Wild Life...all great songs. David Byrne is a genius.
You'd be interested to know that the drummer had a side project that was the Tom Tom Club, which was fairly influential in the world of hip hop.
Actually living... is once in a lifetime
Take me to the River is my favorite. Nice beat. 😊
"And She Was" is my favourite.
🗣 I'd forgotten about this oldie but now that I'm listening im like oh yeah😊
Fire reaction BP, thank you very much for doing this epic tune.
The bassist and drummer are in a spin-off band, as others here have said. The Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" is basically used for Mariah Carey's "Fantasy". Mariah just sings over the music from the song.

Burning down the house and and she was , are a few of their hits. They were big in the 80's
Stop Making Sense, a must watch.
Talking Heads have a gang of great, rhythmic hits!! ❤❤❤
David Byrne (pronounced like "burn") is a performance artist first and foremost. Talking Heads produced some of the greatest experimental rock songs starting in the late '70s and they were huge in the '80s. And their videos are always amusing!
I remember seeing them perform Take Me to the River on SNL, and my dad looked at me like WTF, and I looked back at him like IDK.
One of my favorite Talking Heads song is “This Might Be the Place.” It’s a beautifully sweet homage to just being in the right place in your life.
I agree the live performances are phenomenal, especially the ones from the early 80s like Live in Rome.
I am so glad I got to see them in concert way back in the 80's
Me, too!
I saw them in 1983 in LA, first large rock show I ever went to. Saw a few tiny punk bands and some jazz before that.
Talking Heads were cut from a different mold. Refreshing.
Life during wartime live. It's the best and you'll see how in shape the band is! Makes me exhausted just watching it
I've always loved this song. Saw him live with St. vincent and they put on a fantastic show. He may be old now, but he's still got it.
for any REN fans around.. there is this really sweet project, its a get well soon song for Ren that Wynand Fourie made with a bunch of renegades, its called "love's healing"
Thank you for the heads up... I hadn't seen it - we have alotta love to give. Makes my heart happy to see this 💜
Please more Talking Heads. David Bryne is a Ren-level talent as far as lyrics and performance goes. Watch the Movie..................
"Unique and refreshing" from 1980. Many great songs from them listed below. Dream Operator always gets me re-inspired to live my best life.
When I used to hear this song in the '80s... I liked it but at the same time I always thought this guy would make a great preacher...
I saw this genius in a field at a rainy festival in Herefordshire! He was AMAZING!
The Talking Heads catalog is quite large.
My personal favorites: Lifetime Piling Up, Blind, Road to Nowhere.
Road to Nowhere is a MUST!
All of David's lyrics definitely have depth
Burning down the house🔥 🏠 is an awesome song by 🗣 this band
Need to react life during war time live. Best preformans by any band in my opinion
I sincerely respect you just for saying you like the uniqueness of it, how it's not "cookie-cutter" like everything else. That's evidence of a strong and open mind. Because that guy's a genius, and usually genius is too far ahead for regular people to appreciate or even see.
The Talking Heads have one of the best love songs ever made, This Must be the Place.
Key line here…. “LETTING the days go by” …passive vs active…
Great reaction on this, BP! You are so perceptive.
I am sure you have heard "Burning Down the House", great weird video and awesome live performance. TH reminds of Primus and Devo in that they went their own way musically and were successful. My personal favorite is Road To Nowhere.

Talking Heads is like performance art. It is part song and part presentation. Their lyrics stick with you long after the song is over.
Life During Wartime is an absolute must. Live ❤
What an awesome song, madness and genius!
The best thing about Talking Heads is that it sounds like it can only be a studio recording but they were absolutely manic to watch live too!!
You have not reacted to Talking Heads until you do a live performance. Look at his energy here then multiply it by 1000 and then you have him live!
