Picture in your minds eye a period of time where there was no internet, there were no cell phones, there was no cable - no dish no satellite TV. You hung out with your friends and listened to a stereo system or on the rare occasion went to a concert and saw a band live. At that time MUSIC was the great transcendence to bridge and bind people. So, today when you see old people listening and dancing and crying to bands like this it is because it truly takes them back to a very special place and time in THIER OWN MINDS EYE. GOOD BANDS. GREAT BANDS are able to transport people. ROCK ON

This song was a HUGE hit in the late 70's. E.L.O was a huge hit . Jeff Lynn , who wrote and sang every hit they ever had was one of the Genius artists of the 70's. His Pure , voice was perfectly suited for the beautiful ballads , and POP rockers that they produced through the years. I remember sitting in the basement in 1977 with my buddies , listening to them singing ..
E.L.O. was one of the bands very much like QUEEN, in that when they were playing...they demanded your attention and respect . Whatever else was happening , our cutting up, horsing around , and antics would stop and they had our undivided attention. Even in our young teen years , we understood that we were listening to music of a different caliber. We were hearing REAL musical integrity. You should go listen to one of Jeff Lynn's more recent songs called " When I was A Boy" (The official video version) It does a very fascinating retrospect through the years of ELO, and into the 90's when Jeff Lynn, Roy Orbison , George Harrison , Bob Dylan , and Tom Petty , formed a SUPER Band called the Traveling Wilbury's, who ended up releasing several Mega Hits, prior to Roy Orbison , and George Harrison's death . The Video itself was a groundbreaking video for it's use of Ultra high speed cinematography to create a very cool one shot effect .Hard to explain you need to see it .

Jeff Lynne is the greatest musical artist of our time.....no one matches his level on singing, writing, performing, producing, and LIVE. His live shows are lit: they're clean, lush, tightly produced. People are shocked that some of these songs are 40 years old and Jeff Lynne can sing/perform them at the same level of quality as the original.....it's unbelievable. After the comeback tour concert in 2018 in Philly, I sat in my seat awestruck.

If you want to hear one of his very best songs which is hard to choose cause they're is 50 years of them give "Roll Over Beethoven" a try it will blow your mind and "Rockria". There are so many more, you will love them all!

Amazing how they can take a sad song and make it still feel so good. How they can orchestrate all of the musicians, singers, the lighting, what a great production. This was how we used to have to make long distance calls by going using an operator. They usually had a limit on the rings, thus he was asking to let it keep on ringing with hope she would pick up. Always a chance.

This song always has had a huge place in my wife and my hearts. I served in the British Military for 38 years, and before the internet and facetime, we used to have one phone call a week if we were lucky. And depending of where I was in the world depended on whether we were able to speak or not, I once got put on report when I used a payphone in Abuja in Nigeria, it was worth it.
I took my two daughters to this concert after I was released form hospital after I had received several surgery's over two years after I was hit in Afghanistan in 15. Prior to that my oldest son had assisted my escape from hospital a few times to see ELO, Alice Cooper and a few others until my wife started to see if there were any concerts or musical events that might tempt me, busted. But not until after we had managed ELO in Hyde Park and Glastonbury, we got to meat Jeff Lynne at Glastonbury thanks to an old comrade who was in charge of his personal security. He is one of the nicest and most modest people I have ever met. He sent us the tickets for Wembley when my mate told him I was in a wheelchair now, and was still the same man I'd met before.
He truly is a music legend.

Great to hear your retracting to E L O. Don't know if you realised that the sound at the start of the performance was the sound old phones used to sound like while the call was ringing out at the other end. Jeff Lynne started the band with Roy Wood in the early 70s and they are celebrating 50 years now. He still sounds great. I followed them as they originated in Birmingham England which is my home town and they were and still are a completely different sound with the blend of classical instruments and upbeat music. He is a genius no doubt about it. I loved everything they released so I would suggest All over the world and hopefully you will get to hear how he used different instruments to make sounds of rain and thunder etc. I even like his more recent track, "When I was a boy" but just under Jeff's name. He also joined up with Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Bob Dylan to produce The Travelling Willburys. Jeff was asked by these artists to produce their albums which of course he did. You must have heard "Mr Blue sky". Happy hunting.

Classy Rock. I like that. Technically ELO is considered soft rock and corporate rock. The slow melodies and pristine harmony is their signature. Corporate rock took place in the second half of the 70s and received great popularity from rock fans but received criticism in the industry. The production you mentioned was an issue. At the time disco was taking hold. ugh!!! So the record companies toured with intense production sets, elaborate instruments like baby grands and show stopping pyrotechnics/5 story inflatable snakes and I will never forget the spaceship. Competing with corporate rock bands was tough. Their fans were being “bought”, was the reputation. As a huge fan, it was amazing. Boston, one of the greatest bands, had a flying saucer type spaceship on their album cover. Lights out, smoke everywhere and that spaceship descended over the stage. I am lost my mind. Pick a band. Any band from 70s or 80s. Save up. Go to a concert. It’s life changing.

E.L.O. have loads of great songs. Jeff Lynne is a genius and sounds just as good live at 70+as he did when younger on the studio versions. You should try 'All Over the World' flash mob videos.

OMG RAD you’re the best!! 🎉🎉 My favorite E L O song and live at Wembley no less!! Wahoo! I listened to ELO all thru Junior High & High School. Jeff Lynne is the lead vocalist …. Often referred to as the 5th Beatle. Brilliant musician! 👍👍
And they have a huge catalog of music!! 🎶🎶🎶🎶 MR. BLUE SKY is good!

If you wanna feel all that E-L-O is, try the 4-song combination called "Concerto for a Rainy Day". Yes, it is 4 songs but will take you on a small E-L-O journey that you will not soon forget. So, we call then E-L-O (not Elo) or we call them Electric Light Orchestra or Jeff Lynne's E-L-O. I like your characterization of "Classy Songs" which you probably picked up from "classical rock" or progressive rock", but E-L-O is indeed classy whereas other Prog-rock bands are weird or avant-garde. That being said, ELO also made some weird and avant-garde pieces that are only for true ELO-philes. A few ELO songs missed the mark altogether but we love Jeff so much, we write those songs off as transitional pieces (Marston Moor, et al).

    Hi , Rad :
I liked so much your video - reaction.
    why don´t you make a reaction about the Electric Light Orchestra ´s song " Midnight blue " ( 1979 ) :
    ruclips.net/video/f38qG3Aeb-A/видео.html
"Midnight blue", a precious and immortal song, recorded at Musicland Studios (Munich, Germany), owned by the Italian musician and producer Giorgio Moroder.
You can see the influence of Beethoven, Bach, Wagner and Johann Strauss, in addition to that rich mix of styles, ranging from the doo wop of The Platters and The Chordettes, for example, through the sound and heritage of The Beatles, until the disco style, represented by Barry White, Van McCoy, The Bee Gees, Donna Summer (who also recorded in the same studios, like Queen, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and many other greats) and others.

There is a touch of Viennese waltz as a whole (The theme itself is a waltz, but with a slower rhythm), an iota of bolero, as well as blues, swing and the aforementioned doo wop (The influence of African music it's undeniable - I think.)
All a bitterness that makes this beautiful ballad, an ethereal song and without equal.
In its part of strings and choral arrangements, Jeff Lynne, its composer and main voice, Richard Tandy, keyboardist of E.L.O. and Louis Clark ( R.I.P. .), who conducted the orchestra.
Kelly Groucutt ( R.I.P. ), bassist for E.L.O. , was his second voice and part of the choirs, too.
Among many other details, it is worth mentioning that this song used the synthesizer, recently launched on the market at that time, the Yamaha CS-80, the same one with which he created immortal melodies, the Greek musician Vangelis; and sound engineer Reinhold Mack (who was very close, in his work, to Queen), used Sennheiser microphones, placed at different distances, in order to create a magnificent surround sound environment, similar to that of the interior of a cathedral. This is very evident, in two other ballads present in the album "Discovery" (1979), to which this song belongs, "Need her love" (With a strong Gregorian chant glaze) and "Confusion" (With a marked accent in Richard Wagner's choral work.)
Lyrically speaking, in one of its parts, there is a reference to a verse from the play "Romeo and Juliet" (William Shakespeare): It says "... But what's the difference cos' they say what's in a name ..." ( "... But, how much do they look at what is in a surname ...")
It is intuited that the song refers to the furtive encounter between two lovers, at the stroke of midnight, in a desolate place, which must end before dawn, so as not to be discovered by those close to them.
This song was not made as a single, on either side of the Atlantic, but in Australia.
Thanks for making and uploading these videos.
    A hug.
Greetings from Chile, South America , amigo.
