  • Welcome! Old tank repair is a series on the ECA channel where I take an old downtrodden built model and give it a full restoration. Along the way I take the viewer along the process from start to finish. I also show several tips and techniques on how the process is done.
In this episode the model that is getting rebuilt is an old 1/35th scale Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog light tank. This model I built back in the Spring of 1998 but several mistakes were made during the build and the paintwork. This model sat forgotten about in a display shelf for 20 years. Will it be possible to complete and restore? Find out!

Nice build on a classic Tamiya kit from the 1970s!! As a retired US Army Tanker, the only time you have rust on the tracks of tanks, M48, M60 and M1 tanks when they’re sitting in the motor pool for weeks without being moved. In the field, the end connectors and other steel parts of the track are more of a satin, not gloss, gun metal gray.

I love how you take your time to talk about how bad that glue is. I appreciate passion.

Nice build! You saved that old tank!! Well done!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻I was gifted this kit last Christmas. I put my other model projects aside and started this one. I changed out the .50 with one from Asuka and added some other details as well including photo etch chain.
I changed out the tracks with tracks from AFV Club, as they fit nicely and had better detail. Changed out the Jerry Cans with Asuka ones. Also added some stowage, aftermarket and home made.

Great content as usual! I have taken your lead and started to rebuild my own model’s from my childhood…. I fix the mistakes I made but have been leaving the paint much as it was when I did it… sort of preserving the feel of when I did the work originally…

I understand about preserving some older builds. I have a few builds that I feel that way too and they will never be revised, but preserved in their current condition (minus a small repair here or there) due to sentimental value.

...we ALL played with our models back in the day after we built them, and then we BLEW THEM UP with an M-80 !!!! (circa 1960's!)

I sometimes use testors red tube just for parts that need a thicker glue to stay right or to mix with leftover sprue to make homemade model filler, I do recommend micro set/sol for decals ti get rid of silvering

I use micro set/sol on my builds, this one included

@@oddball759mm ah, the decals appear to have silvered a little on this one ( the numbers on the side ) so if you used the tamyia supplied decals it’s not your fault, tamyia’s decals are printed very thick

@@Sgt-lott10 it's the lighting and the angle of the plates on the tank. In normal light the varnished decals look much better than in the videos. Trying to get the scene lit and the decals not to silver is always boxing match. Tamiya decals I always had good results with. the ones that for me were hit or miss were Italeri

@@oddball759mm the best decals I’ve ever worked with were academy and they didn’t need anything to get the painted on look, across all the model groups I’m in everyone has said to get them where it doesn’t silver at all ( even with odd lighting ) it takes a very harsh decal solvent

@@Sgt-lott10 perhaps the quality on the newer academy kits are better because on the older ones that was not really the case. One technique I need to try is the gloss coat then varnish trick. that some people have said gives good results
