#polyphia #egodeath #reaction Let's check out Polyphia and Steve Via song Ego Death... I mean, how hard can it be?! For guitar lessons visit www.theguitarexplorium.com
Because he's playing on standar tunning with 7th, so if you try to play the song not in the standar tunning way you will not be able to play some notes he plays. He tunes down post production
All three guitarists are sitting on that throne for their respective focused parts, interestingly. Many miss that. It just seems to stick out more in Steve’s part at the end.
I keep noticing that lol! I knew Scott was also in it and nearly nobody mentions it haha. Funnily enough, I totally missed that Tim was sitting on it too... Great analogy for the song name though!
@@theguitarexplorium The song gradually builds up and gets more complicated as they go from the basement to the top of the building where Steve is waiting for them. The trumpet being at the end feels like an ode to the melody, and not the shred. The trumpet playing the melody is standing above them all (although no chair :) ).
Hello to all the Ego Death reaction stalkers out there who, like me, go from reaction to reaction just to experience this song with new people and glean new insight into this masterpiece. Yours was quite good by the way, keep up the good work.
The trumpet was at the end because Ego Death is the last track on their album and the trumpet is featured on the first track on the album as well so that it's the bookend for the entire thing.
Ah ok, really looking forward to hearing the whole thing... I'm holding back in case there are any more that require 'reactions' before I spoil it for myself!
I am convinced the album is based on a book called Trumpet. You need to check it out and a 1940's black jazz trumpet player makes 1000% sense and I love ever moment of it
I took the ending trumpet to be symbolic. They weave through different genres and different aesthetic styles throughout the song. The core idea of ego death is letting go of the illusory division between all music, a fitting theme for a song written on the back of a pop chord progression. as the sun sets, he plays the blues on trumpet. This is a reminder that, quite figuratively, "At The End Of The Day, We Are All Making The Same Thing: Music" ... at least that's my humble interpretation of what they are saying.
I love how you pointed out so much about Steve's playing. So many people think his part was overrated, but the sustain and ability of his harmonics are amazing
@@ATSinclair11 His playing is so smooth, all around Steve just lets the guitar sing, and it's amazing. To be fair he's been doing it longer than the other three (and I) have been alive so the amount of hours he's had on a guitar might be shocking (watching his Hydra video for example, a guitar is just an extension of Steve's body.) I guess if you work at it enough . . .
I like that for the first 5 minutes until 5:30 or so you thought "that dude is doing shenanigans but for sure I can figure this out" and then went to "oh my god" immediately after the intro ended :D Bro, we've all been there, we've all been there when we first listened to Polyphia :D
I like your reaction style, the pauses are fine. Always nice hearing from people who know what they're talking about since I don't understand this stuff.
You explained the changed tuning, but after that I'm still certain he has more notes available to him. And at least another three hands as well... Thanks for your perspective!
The cleanest little detail in the video is when Steve first starts playing, the song stops dead and everyone else bows their heads in respect, and they let him bring it back in his way and they just follow him till the end.
That was an amazing breakdown of the track. As someone who is very lacking in theory knowledge, it's always impressive to see someone deconstruct a song so quickly 😁 you got a new sub here!
Most people don’t know unless you have used one, but the sustain comes from a Sustainiac pickup in the neck position. It has a mode for infinite sustain. It will take that note or harmonic and sustain it indefinitely. Steve was able to shape his intro sound with it.
The first 5:40 of this reaction was wonderful (I know the rest will be wonderful, too) because I knew what was coming and you didn't. Your response to . . . whatever it is exactly that Tim does . . . was perfection.
Fun fact about the rooftop jam with Steve that another reactor picked out relating to the miming: The drummer does a bunch of these really sharp hi-hat fills on the track but doesn't actually play them on the video every time. So my guess is they had the footage but then went on and later on still changed some small things on the track during mixing, but obviously you can't just call Steve Vai and say "Hey, remember that shoot we did? Yeah that's all useless we gotta do it again" so they just rolled with it. It's close enough that you can't see it unless you're a musician and you're looking for it.
Steves part was completely chopped and changed up from what he played. He gave Tim permission to do so, but still raised an eyebrow! Its interesting to read what Steve says about this, he loves it.
In the basement, Tim Henson was sitting on the throne, on the next level Scott Le page was sitting on the throne, and then on the roof Steve Vai was on the throne. Basically at the start of each of their respective “solos”. The music video has a story to go along with title Ego Death and it’s displayed throughout both in the song structure and the history of the band.
Yeah that is true it shows history of EGO death for band's history where they started off as math rock, killed it and went on to Hip Hop infused Prog Rock with The Most Hated album, then to the new mixed genre album New Levels New Devils which killed another ego. Then the latest album released where they literally went with entire album that has songs mixed with various other genres RMTYWD as another ego death.
I love the "he's got notes I don't have, that's not fare". Welcome to my life, However it has led to some conversations with students about discipline and practice that has yielded great results and confidence in students. I may never be really able to to play this great but I can explain what he is doing. Tim is inspirational and frankly a genius but his playing is approachable by those dedicated to the work. My fingers haven't bled in twenty-five years but they are once again, stick with it my friend.
I think thats partly due to the cinematography. (Im a cinematographer) in Tim and Scotts case. The chair is there and they're sitting in it. Dope but people sit in chairs all the time. So not as interesting. In Steves case theres a parallax reveal, sort of like a marvel hero standoff scene. Which can make anything look epic. And because the chair is part of whats revealing Steve, you notice it more.

Tim and Scott Both use what I (as a non guitarist) understand as a compound picking technique a lot so there are times when they are using a pick and times when they aren’t - and the pick is palmed for want of a better term. When Steve is sitting in the chair, he's holding and using his whammy bar ever so slightly. That's probably why you think he was getting that note bending effect. Not really noticeable. But being a guitarist, go back and look. I'm sure you'll notice it then.
