- The Banni tree (Prosopis juliflora) holds special significance in certain regions of India, particularly during Navaratri, especially in parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This tree is often associated with rituals of valor and strength due to its historical and mythological importance.
Significance of Banni Tree in Navaratri
In Karnataka, particularly in the Mysore region, the Banni tree is linked to the Dasara festival, which is the culmination of Navaratri. It is believed that warriors, including the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, worshipped the Banni tree before going into battle to ensure victory and protection.
The tradition of Ayudha Puja, where weapons, tools, and machinery are worshipped, often includes a ritual involving the Banni tree. In the Mysore Dasara procession, people pay homage to the tree as a symbol of victory and prosperity.
This tree is also linked to Shami Vruksha Pooja, which is performed to seek blessings of strength, valor, and success.
Navaratri Banni Tree Puja Ritual
Preparation: During Navaratri, devotees clean the area around the Banni tree or bring a branch of the tree home for the ritual.
Offerings: Devotees offer flowers, turmeric, kumkum, and sometimes light lamps at the base of the tree or the branch.
Prayers: Devotees recite prayers seeking blessings of valor, strength, and victory in their endeavors. Some also chant verses from sacred texts, particularly related to Goddess Durga, as she is worshipped during Navaratri for strength and protection.
Symbolism: In some communities, after the puja, people exchange Banni leaves (which symbolize gold) with one another, wishing prosperity and good fortune.
The Banni tree thus plays a significant role in the cultural and religious practices during Navaratri. It is revered as a symbol of strength, victory, and prosperity.
