    Wow I really appreciate this. I think it will be worth the legwork/time to buy the tools this weekend. Way less trouble than renting a car and leaving my car at the shop for this service!

    You always disconnect the NEGATIVE CABLE FIRST. That will prevent sparks coming from the positive side.

    Worked like a charm. The bolt at the top is 12M and the bolt at the bottom is 14M. Had to loose the bottom bolt to move the alternator. Had to use a metal pipe to get more leverage and be able to get it loose.

    Seems like this is a common issue on these Scion Xa.

      i got this going on. this morning, with a new battery, car wouldn't start. i jumped it and drove to work and let it run in the parking for a while. stopped at advance on the way home and they checked the battery. it read good. i'm definitely doing this tomorrow. good clear instructions. takes the fear out of it.

      Another common issues on these Xa models are the rear wheel bearings. They go bad around the 80k-120K mark. Luckily, it is an easy fix and the afermaket hub assembly pair are around $100 usd. Owned a Xa since 2007. Great beater car that will last and last with proper maintainence.

    Well that was straight forward. Why the hell couldn't they have just put a damn automatic tensioner like they did for the Corolla? Any excuse to use a crowbar under the hood, right?

    You’re supposed to takeoff the negative why you’re not the positive

    Nowadays you just install a heim joint in place of that bracket. Makes belt tensioning so much easier

    M8x1.25” . You can find it at Home Depot

    Didn't work for me. Is there any other bolts to loosen? No matter how hard I pried the arm didn't move even the slightest. Looks like you did it with one hand. Am I missing something?

    • @simplecarstuff1570
      @simplecarstuff1570  6 лет назад

      Alex Bordelon , there is just that one bolt that needs to be loosened. It shouldn’t be hard to move at all once you have done that. However it doesn’t always need to move much in order to get he tension you need on the belt. If it really won’t move, then it is probably due to grime and dirt that may have caused it get stuck. You may be able to wiggle it loose.

      There's a 14m bolt on the underside. Mine was a bitch to get to but if you have the correct socket wrench it can be move one click at a time . Took me 15 mins to get it loosed. I had to fight tooth & nail. LOL! If that 14 on the underside of the alt is too tight nothing will move...

      I can confirm the presence of the 14mm bolt on the bottom of the alternator, as well as the necessity to loosen said bolt in order to free up the alternator for belt tensioning. The 14 mm bolt is easily reached with a long-handled ratcheting socket wrench. In my experience it is pretty standard on vehicles for there to be one or more bolt(s) that fix the alternator (or whatever component with a belt that can be tensioned) to the engine or mount, and one bolt to be tightened once desired belt tension is achieved. After the desired tension is achieved, the tension bolt is tightened, which temporarily holds the tension on the belt system. Then the mounting bolts are tightened to fix it all in place. If the mounting bolts are not tightened, the tension on the system will eventually cause the belts to loosen due to normal vehicle vibrations and bumps from standard driving conditions. In this case the original poster must have gotten lucky with a relatively loose mounting bolt to begin with. I submit that the original post should be supplemented to indicate the presence of the 14mm bolt in order to save future viewers from potential problems resulting from incorrect/incomplete instructions.
