Hello Scott Manley! Thanks you very much for this video review. We are watched your RUclips channel a lot and we are really glad that you like the game! We will clarify a bit about why we are recommending aerodynamic mode. It is only temporary during Early Access because orbital mode have more bugs and it is hard to create a decent game goals for an orbital mode. But once we will complete the game, we will remove this recommendation from the game and both games modes will be equivalent. What about "better and bigger', yeah, the next update will be huge, we are going to add a galaxy map and a lot of another nice things in the future updates. We will be glad if you will decide to revisit the game when a lot new cool stuff will be implemented : ) Thanks again!
I have my opinions on this game, never expected to share it with the devs. This space game lets you build your own ships, and it has orbital mechanics in it. Definitely has potential, but just mining and simple combat isn't all that exciting. Maybe there's a direction you'd like to take this game, but it wasn't mentioned on Steam so I can't know about it, but there should definitely be more depth, something different than the usual sandbox stuff, gameplay other than just minimg and pew-pew. If you'd like to know what I think could be such things, here are some: -the combat being deeply tactical, with the custom ships alowing many possible strategies -the combat being skill-based, building a ship that fits your playstyle -competitive multiplayer with build orders and etc. -an end-goal, like having to face a boss at some point -fast-paced multiplayer deathmatch I'm sure you can have better ideas, these are just for inspiration. There's so much unexplored territory, while things like sandbox space games, ww2 fps games, zombie survival games etc. start to get stale.
*G.Zoltan* Thanks you for suggestion. Yes, you are right, the game need some kind of goals and a "feel of progression". We already working on a tech tree and more advanced AI for enemy and ally ships, this should make the game a much better. *Enceos* *TechyBen* Yes, it is a nice ideas. Thanks. We are going to add more missions and feel of exploration in the next few updates.
the new fusion technique uses lasers to create cold fushion reactor apparently. also if you haven't used a laser cutter yet, it's the coolest thing in the world. I can't stop playing around with them, I hope i don't lose a finger or something though.
Hey Scott. I just want to thank you for doing those orbital mechanics on paper videos. I recently had to do a project on spacetravel including traveling to Mars, and your video was a nice starting point for my research into the delta-v required for a journey to Mars. Thank you for doing those videos and making a tutorial for the calculations
If you press P while your solar panels are selected you can have them oriented in the same way, so both panels are directed at the sun. Helps a lot with faster recharge rate when you have more lasers and are doing some hevy duty mining or shooting at pirates.
One day in the future when our great grand children are careening around in their nuclear powered shuttles, it'll be a variation of Scott's tractor beam that save them. Thanks Scott.
The way I always figured it in space games with mining lasers is that they use the same gravity technology that's used for walking around inside the ships. You just aim a cone of gravity at the asteroid, then fire a laser at it. The laser ablates the surface, which creates thrust that pushes back against the gravity to balance the forces, and the gravity cone then sucks in the bits.
*yaksher* Yes, you are right. It is made intentionally and such system have its own benefits, for example collisions with asteroids or debris is much often, that makes the physics more fun.
As someone who just got this game, I am thankful of having experience in KSP, combined with the more brutal Children of a Dead Earth's orbital combat and maneuvering between speed and efficiency. There is still no NPC ships as of this version, mainly due to orbital pathing.
this game is a tiny jewel , great when you want to play something that's got some depth into it while not being overly complex. They do update it regularily and it's very much alive. I got it very early on, and it's evolved quite a lot already. Again it's by no means a world beating wonder, but is entertaining, fun, well done and if you like to play around with orbital mechanics, it's just the perfect game to chill and have some fun with ;).
Omg I love that, "That is kind of cool, actually no it's pretty lame" I think the word is savage? So cool to hear Scott talk like that, but I still bought this game I'm going to enjoy it :)
Apple is preparing for Shadowrun becoming real. When companies become extraterritorial entities with their own police/military force. Doesn't hurt when you have your own nuclear weapons, too, in case those pesky dragons get ideas.
Hello. Tech tree is currently unavailable. Only a "linear progression" which is quite boring. However we realized an importance of tech tree and already started to working on it. Tech tree will be added in the next or after a next update (within 1-2 months)
I see its only 11 euros on steam. I will get it! It looks relaxing and like a perfect game for someone studying aerospace engineering :) I always like trying to get indy games. Keep it coming with the updates. -edit I will for sure be playing it in orbital mode. Much more interesting.
I'd wholeheartedly tell you to get it. It's by no means complete, it's got a wide berth for expansion, but if what you're looking is for a simple game that lets you toy with orbital mechanics and have a general lot of non-ambitious fun with it, certainly this one will keep you entertained. Devs are pretty active aswell (heh, no need to tell you that, you already got them to answer you ;)) and updates come out regular. Hopefully it has a great future and we see it to get a lot more things added into it, but as it is right now it's good enough to have some casual fun now and then, and just chill in front of the computer ;).
Instead of lasers, you could use huge concave mirrors to melt the asteroid with sunlight. And then you could just suck it in with a straw made of ... something. Although now that I think of it, you can't really suck anything in, in space.
in X3: Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude, you can buy a weapon system that shoots a singularity or some shit that causes seismic shifts in the asteroid and separates the thing. Ineffective against other ships, but it's cool to visualize in your head.
I think space mining would involve a kind of pressurized, inflatable air lock with a set of claws to hold and guide the asteroid. As for the actual removal of material, Id go for a grinder head and a set of vacuum pumps to suck up the material. Guesswork ofc but one can dream.
I love games like this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Scott! Casual space farting around. I'm too dumb and time starved to fuss with KSP. Something like this is more my speed. I may give it a go! :) Wonder if you can play with gamepad. I know EEK! Only say this because I love my GPD Win, and GPD Win 2 will be out soon. This seems like a nice option for such a device.
Hello. Thanks you, we glad you like the game : ) Unfortunately gamepads is not supported. We are thought about this, but there is too much little buttons on the interface and windows with data, so support of gamepads can be hard to implement.
The space ships and planets are comically large. Or rather, the distances are comically small. Like, you have completely different orbits, but your close approach is like 5 of your space ships in length and you can trivially brute force any encounter.
yaksher it's meant to be less realistic to have more action. Those looking for more hard science have other games to appeal to them anyway like KSP and some others Scott has reviewed.
Never actually considered lasers as a real mining tool, always just thought they were a cheap gimik to simplify resource collection in a game. But assuming you have a powerful laser (which in practice you always have in space by just putting up a mirror and focusing the reflected light) you could drill a hole into the asteroid by just melting and evaporating the rock using the laser, once you have a sufficiently deep hole it will act as a nozzle and the ore inside the whole being hit by the laser will evaporate and shoot out the nozzle/hole directed towards your spacecraft and you can just "scoop it up" by letting the hod gassed hit something cool and solidify. Maybe you could even have a blob of pure water to catch it, great cooling liquid, easy to come by and super simple to get the material out of the water compared to getting it out from some solid "scooper" :)
Mining with light is actually a feasible idea; current proposals for mining small asteroids involve a grab&bag operation, and *then* using focused light to evaporate material, that then gets scooped out of the bag.
Hello. You are about system requirements? It depends on amount and size of objects (ships) in the world. Several ships of average size can be run very well even on quite outdated laptops. You may check system requirements on the Steam store page.
Ox King I consider it like having easy mode selected by default on something like FTL. A way for more casual players to get used to the game mechanics before playing the real version. Anything that gets more people familiar with orbital mechanics, even if it's by baby steps is a good thing. Once we start getting most people used to them, we can start having less silly sci fi. (Except when we want things to be silly intentionally)
Could you perhaps try a short play-through of it when it gets a bit fleshed out more? I myself would love to see more gameplay but all the available footage is either old or Russian.
Hello. We are still not sure about modding. Maybe it will be not a direct modding in classic sense, But we are definitely will allow people to send us a new modules which will be added natively.
More nuke videos? YAY. I thought that series was done. Also, my guess at how the mining laser works: Laser converts matter to plasma which can be controlled by electromagnets and drawn into the ship. :P Also ... umm ... fusion engines and you have to use solar panels still? I'm confused.
I haven't played the game, but current fusion uses a lot of energy to start the reaction and it's possible they set up the engine in such a way that all the reaction products are used as propellant and vented out the nozzle along with the hydrogen used as propellant and none of it is siphoned off for energy generation. You have to run things through different systems to generate power than you would to just create thrust. Just a possible explanation without looking at the game.
SM - This is going to sound really lame, but what does the "Sandbox" mode toggle at the start of the game actually do to the game compared with not having it on? :-/
I feel like you didn't even give this game a chance. At no point did you actually introduce *what the game is.* We are just left to wonder what your are trying to accomplish while you mine an asteroid for far too long.
The video is also cut rather strangely. Perhaps he was in a hurry, or just felt he needed to get something uploaded and this was the only thing in backlog
I don't know...I watched the video and now want the game. I feel like a lot of Scotts audience will like this game simply because it's in space, has orbital mechanics, and looks cool. My only concern at this point is the fact that it is early access.
Hello. The game is not casual, on the contrary, we are focusing on the development of deep and hardcore game mechanics. Size of planets is not the only parameter which distinguishes hardcore game from the casual game. We just don't have a goal to create full size planets like in KSP. There is a lot of additional features such as physics, ship buildings, energy system, inventory, production etc. And it is quite hardcore features.
Yo! Mr. Manley! I am finally able to play KSP on console after a year and a half. I decided to check out some of your airplane building tutorials for beginners to freshen up. But unfortunately the videos are old and out of date. The physics have been reworked since. I was hoping that you might update those tutorials with the current PS4 build. There are many new people now that have absolutely no idea how to make an airplane fly. What's the chance that you might make some new tutorials for the new guys (and myself)?
There are orbital mechanics in Elite: Dangerous, but the ships are so efficient you can choose to ignore the effects. ruclips.net/video/wWJEnogSNFY/видео.html
You know the black comment would have worked a bit better with Hitchhiker's Guide references.... Hotblack Desiato and his spaceship he crashes into the sun. ;)
I like the look of this game, very much. I can see it as the type of game I could sink months of time into. But it's been in development for 3 years, and I can't seem to find any information on the roadmap. One of the biggest problems with EA games is burning out with them before their official release, and thus missing the end vision of the game.
Hello. In the next update we will add a galaxy map which technically will allows us to implement some kind of story about journey through the galaxy. Most likely we will implement some very simple story, but it is not priority for now. Currently we are focused on core mechanics of the game.
Mining with lasers does actually make sense in space - if you were to use a shovel in effectively zero gravity on an asteroid, you'd just push yourself back off into space. Shovels, drills, and so forth take a decent amount of force to dig in. On Earth, gravity provides the force to cancel out the equal and opposite reaction. In space in a zero-G environment... Power consumption for a laser is pretty high, but it shouldn't be a real problem if you have a fusion reactor onboard. Small asteroids, at least the ones we've sent probes to, seem to be basically heaps of loose rubble, and given that they tend to be iron rich, maybe you could do something involving magnets? Icy asteroids are trickier. No tricks involving magnets here! Does anyone know the albedo of ice in the infrared part of the spectrum? In for visible light lasers, you have a problem since most of the light is just reflected off, when it needs to be absorbed to melt the ice. On the other hand, ice has a far lower melting point than rock. Though... if spacecraft end up with enough delta-V to fly around without worrying much about it, getting off the Earth shouldn't take vast amounts of fuel, so why not just get water out of the ocean?
Hello. You are completely right. Mining lasers is not realistic, it is just a useful game-play simplification which is often used in many others space games. But we are going to add a mining stations which will be equipped with some more realistic machinery for mining. What about planets, yes, we are thinking about implementation of resource gathering from planets. Thanks.
Hello. Yes, 2D physics, but 3D graphics. 2D physics have its own advantages, for example collisions in such space is much more often, this makes physics more fun.

Secret missions, factions, uncharted sectors and exploration, hidden technologies, story :) that would really pump me up.
Multiple mission types always goes a long way. Such as rescue, resupply etc.

TIL that This Is Spinal Tap has an average IMDB user rating of 8.0/11.

I'm pretty sure I had a daydream about that game a few years ago. But, by gods, it's a thousand times better than what I could imagine back then.
Feels a bit like The Expanse: The Game, wich would be an amazing direction to go in
One day in the future when our great grand children are careening around in their nuclear powered shuttles, it'll be a variation of Scott's tractor beam that save them. Thanks Scott.

Orbital mechanics are “too difficult”... not for us experienced ksp players
These orbital mechanics seem comically easy, actually. Like, all the distances are so trivially small that you can brute force anything.

Just what the hell does Apple have you working on Scott?
Apple is preparing for Shadowrun becoming real. When companies become extraterritorial entities with their own police/military force. Doesn't hurt when you have your own nuclear weapons, too, in case those pesky dragons get ideas.
Scott always has a way of explaining things so they makes sense. Today on Scott Manley's channel?
"Buy some pew-pew bullet bang-bangs."
Spinal Tap !! I tried to remember the name of that movie for two week... Thank you !
Is this a sandbox type of game? Is there a tech tree?
Hello.
Tech tree is currently unavailable. Only a "linear progression" which is quite boring.

"The docking port is actually in the back..." Lol Lovely.
😃 I’m so excited because I already had this game before you made a video!
Instead of lasers, you could use huge concave mirrors to melt the asteroid with sunlight. And then you could just suck it in with a straw made of ... something. Although now that I think of it, you can't really suck anything in, in space.
You can't suck in space lol
Leandro Gabriel you can if you melt it into gas.
Oh, it is an interesting idea. We will think about it. Thanks : )
Lol I left out the 't from can. I meant to say that you can not suck in things, in space.
3 minutes, 9 seconds. That's how long it took to convince me to get this.
"Oh how I select this thing without firing?.."
Nice one! ;)
"I'm feeling like a proper spaceship now"
Great video, was a lot of fun to watch
Can't wait for the next episode of "going nuclerar" thumbs up for that :)
in X3: Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude, you can buy a weapon system that shoots a singularity or some shit that causes seismic shifts in the asteroid and separates the thing. Ineffective against other ships, but it's cool to visualize in your head.
Spinal Tap reference is on point.
A black starship is also a part of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so it's double the references in one.
Looks pretty interesting if a bit barebone atm. Will keep an eye on it.
A true brachistochrone is done under constant thrust.
I bought this game sometime around the first week it was on steam and never played it
So pretty much kerbal space program and eve online had a baby. Love it!
Man. With nuclear engines like that.. it makes all the maneuvers so easy :-) Plus.. 2D? No plane changes? Wow. so simple!
I think space mining would involve a kind of pressurized, inflatable air lock with a set of claws to hold and guide the asteroid. As for the actual removal of material, Id go for a grinder head and a set of vacuum pumps to suck up the material.
Guesswork ofc but one can dream.
This game looks VERY interesting!
@Scott Manley, do you have some keys available for some of us to test this out? Because it does look really cool.
Hello. Thanks you, we glad you like the game : )
Unfortunately gamepads is not supported. We are thought about this, but there is too much little buttons on the interface and windows with data, so support of gamepads can be hard to implement.
17:37 What’s that black disk?
Oh, I see -- planet night side.
Thought those little lights were stars in a stargate...
... as in “My god! It’s full of stars!”
cute game. hope they keep up development.
Thanks, glad you like it. Yes, we will continue development until nice and polished version 1.0 will be achieved : )
neat game. Love the channel.
great Spinal Tap reference, never drum for them lol.
Oh id love to give this a try! cant say i could justify the cost to try it out though
Looks like a pretty neat game! With a similar idea to mine too actually lol
would you make a series of this game, It looks nice
That's damn interesting. I'd say I might actually try and do this on my own channel. How does it run compared to ksp? :)
Hello. You are about system requirements? It depends on amount and size of objects (ships) in the world. Several ships of average size can be run very well even on quite outdated laptops. You may check system requirements on the Steam store page.
"non more black"
I love the way you talk lol
Scott Manley please help, How do I use mods I've downloaded for ksp?!
How is everything scaled in this game?
Reminds me of The Expanse in some ways.....
(Looks at Steam library) Welp, another game that Scott Manley sold me on. DANG IT SCOTT! LOL Keep 'em comin'.
Mini kerbal space program seems cool.
Unlike KSP, astronauts starving to death is a part of the gameplay mechanic in Celestial Command.
Take a look at Allegiance! It's awesome!
how would you compare it to Kerbal in terms of mechanics and accuracy?
Y know, the other day I was wondering if there were any good 2D newtonian physics based games around, now this video haha
I'm only interested in it BECAUSE of the Orbital Mode. Why they even have a non Orbital Version as default?
Ox King I consider it like having easy mode selected by default on something like FTL. A way for more casual players to get used to the game mechanics before playing the real version.
Anything that gets more people familiar with orbital mechanics, even if it's by baby steps is a good thing. Once we start getting most people used to them, we can start having less silly sci fi. (Except when we want things to be silly intentionally)

Why where the fairy lights sagging on the space ship?
Because you're an idiot.
Everyone knows it's not realistic, but it looks cute. Why do you even need to ask? Fuck.
I'll keep an eye on this for when I can get a new graphics card, but will there be any modding support?
Hello. We are still not sure about modding. Maybe it will be not a direct modding in classic sense, But we are definitely will allow people to send us a new modules which will be added natively.

will he be continuing with Galileo conquest?
14:17 “Target object is not grabbed with a grabber” -- have you violated that already?
I see, those are not requirements, they are status information.
Have you ever tried Space Engineers ?
SM - This is going to sound really lame, but what does the "Sandbox" mode toggle at the start of the game actually do to the game compared with not having it on? :-/
The Christmas lights were forming a catenary ...... in SPACE?
I feel like you didn't even give this game a chance. At no point did you actually introduce *what the game is.* We are just left to wonder what your are trying to accomplish while you mine an asteroid for far too long.
The video is also cut rather strangely. Perhaps he was in a hurry, or just felt he needed to get something uploaded and this was the only thing in backlog
What the game is: Farting around in space.
I don't know...I watched the video and now want the game.
I feel like a lot of Scotts audience will like this game simply because it's in space, has orbital mechanics, and looks cool.
My only concern at this point is the fact that it is early access.
I thought it was weird too.
Or just play the game yourself if you wanna know what its about. This isn't a tutorial its more of an ad.
The christmas lights on the station.... are drooping.. because of gravity....?
Artificial gravity??
Casual game. Sun is size of a planet, distances are tiny, exaggerated mass... Pocket-size solar system.
Hello. The game is not casual, on the contrary, we are focusing on the development of deep and hardcore game mechanics. Size of planets is not the only parameter which distinguishes hardcore game from the casual game. We just don't have a goal to create full size planets like in KSP.

kerbal space program should add at least two hybrid rocket engines in the next release
From now on, I'm going to pronounce 'thrust' like Scott Manley does.
reminds me a lot of the old C64 game called Elite.
Exactly one year since this was uploaded
Am I wrong or did they changed the 2D Engine to a 3D one?
Yes, you are right.
However, the engine is always the same, it is "Unity", we just decided to completely replace all the graphics with 3D models.
I haven't seen Spinal Tap. 😣
what is spinal tap?
The greatest mockumentary ever.
Asmr space playa true master of the cosmos Scott Manley but he needs to see Fraiser
Realistic space game in 2D?
Looks promising. Reminds me a bit of the game Transcendence but with better graphics.
Oh god, you've seen Silent Running. I'm so sorry.
I wish they added orbital mechanics to 3030 Deathwar
Wow. I never ever questioned the realism of 'aerodynamic' space in games like Elite Dangerous. No orbital mechanics at all.
There are orbital mechanics in Elite: Dangerous, but the ships are so efficient you can choose to ignore the effects. ruclips.net/video/wWJEnogSNFY/видео.html

Is this kerbal game your playing?
This game looks kind of cool!
All about games like this but...is there a point? Is there progression? Something to achieve?
Hello. Currently - not too much. However we are going to implement a tech tree and more missions in the next update.
Right on! You do that and you have me sold.
Or have sold me on it...how ever the proper English goes
I like the look of this game, very much. I can see it as the type of game I could sink months of time into.
But it's been in development for 3 years, and I can't seem to find any information on the roadmap.
One of the biggest problems with EA games is burning out with them before their official release, and thus missing the end vision of the game.
How did it get up there? That mining ship is like the size of Texas.
Our black goes to 11!
TIme to buy some Pew-Pew Bullet Bang-Bangs!
That is a technical term.
stil think it could be 'docking consent'
It seems nice. Will it have a story mode?
Hello. In the next update we will add a galaxy map which technically will allows us to implement some kind of story about journey through the galaxy.
Most likely we will implement some very simple story, but it is not priority for now. Currently we are focused on core mechanics of the game.
Celestial Command Thanks for the info. I really appreciate.
So, just what the hell kind of game was that ICBM alert in Hawaii, Mr. Manley? Mr. Manley, are you still there?
Thanks.
So is the solar system flat or is it 3D? I noticed that docking alignment was pretty much in a single plane of movement.
it looks pretty 2d
Hello.
Yes, 2D physics, but 3D graphics.
2D physics have its own advantages, for example collisions in such space is much more often, this makes physics more fun.
I love the mode where you can spawn little asteroids and fling them at stuff
It goes to 11!
This games seems to be the closest thing to the expanse iv seen. :).
So, the Christmas lights droop because?...
