    It still frightens the shit out of me when I drop into a new system and don't see a star. It's completely irrational, but neutron stars scare me.

    • @CravenTHC85
      @CravenTHC85 8 лет назад +3

      madhouse5213 Accident? How does one do that on accident? I didn't think a black hole could be the main jump point.

    • @Cretaal
      @Cretaal 8 лет назад +48

      Yep, if you're not paying attention, your jump path might lead you to jump in to a black hole system, since it's technically still a star type. Neutron stars, Black Holes, White Dwarfs... the nemesis of the traveler. I've been conditioned through harsh consequences, if I don't see a big fat glowing ball on exit, I pull back on instinct just so I don't blow up. Space is freaking scary, man XD I love it.
      That first jump... I've never been jump scared by a space game, but I swear: "oh my god, this is it, I'm doing it, our own galaxy, I'm really traveling through spACEWHATTHEFUCKISGOINGON!" Best introduction to gameplay ever.

    • @CravenTHC85
      @CravenTHC85 8 лет назад +3

      Cretaal I conditioned myself to throttle down during the jump. That way there's no chance of "harsh consequences". Even with said knowledge I still get startled if there's not a bright star in front of me. Knowing that black holes can also be jump points makes me even more nervous about going back to the game after six months of not having played it. xP

    • @Cretaal
      @Cretaal 8 лет назад +10

      CravenTHC Oops... my bad. Usually I keep the throttle in the blue zone when the jump initiates so I'm not speeding towards anything. Pull back and go "up" for a few seconds, then throttle down and figure out what the hell you just jumped in to (usually something valuable to scan). Face it, scan it... appreciate it from a distance and move on before it comes alive and eats me like the devil it is.
      It's one of the funner surprises in the game. It seizes your heart, but puts you in complete awe of nature. First time I saw a black hole, I couldn't move, I could just stare at it with my mouth agape in a half terrified smile. It was... awesome is the only word capable of describing it. I love this game so much, It's museum and academy quality, I can't wait to see it complete.

    • @Shattered-Realm
      @Shattered-Realm 8 лет назад +50

      It's actually an alcubierre drive so it's not breaking any laws of physics. Your not travelling faster than light at all your compressing space time in front of you and expaning it behind you. essentially rather than moving "you" through space, you move space around you. Current estimates for the energy required place it at converting the mass of Jupiter into energy. However 2 decades ago they claimed it was all the energy in the universe.

    22,000 light years. 11 hours. 1,000 ly/hr. It would take you 104 days to reach the Andromeda Galaxy, or five-thousand years to reach the edge of the observable (from Earth) universe. Not bad compared to this day and age!

    • @ekscalybur
      @ekscalybur 8 лет назад +17

      All he needs is a drive capable of 2.5 million light year jumps. The lack of anything to refuel with in the intergalactic expanse is the main hurdle.
      This is why the new Mass Effect is all kinds of BS.

      ME uses essentially advanced cannon transports, to travel between galaxies they'd need only to gather the fuel/power at the milky way relay, vaguely similar to how a 8 chevron address works in stargate.

    • @lanteanboy
      @lanteanboy 8 лет назад

      but then, once in Andromeda, how does that ship go? with Mass Effect's basic FTL drives, it would take decades to travel that galaxy, unless they also had Reapers who built Mass Relays in there

    • @lanteanboy
      @lanteanboy 8 лет назад +4

      I'm pretty sure there are stars in the intergalactic void.... but they're probably too sparse to be useable for regular refueling and at definitely more than 60 LY away from one another

      +ZarPof Sorry, but I have yet to see a ringed planet, gas giant or neutron star which you can't even get near in NMS, this looks 1000x more real than NMS. Plus in NMS the entire galaxy seems to be inside of a rainbow instead of just the blackness of space, I want realism not relaxation, which is why I'm such a Star Trek fan.

    • @ZarPof
      @ZarPof 8 лет назад +3

      ***** 1st, fork and spoon. Relaxation looks better than realism, realism looks more realistic than relaxation. 2nd. Startrek as realistic? Come on NMS is startrek. You want realistic Sci-fi, go to Battle Star Galactica, 2010 space oddyssy, interstellar (kind of), the martian. Those are realistic. Holodecks and repicators? God techs that the series blows over. Startreck is barely more sci-fi than it is sci-fantasy. All that said I still do enjoy it.

  • @Stahlwollvieh
    @Stahlwollvieh 8 лет назад +10

    It was a Condor you found, Scott, but that's a Federal ship. ;)
    Fyi you can also turn off your shields, AFMUs, cargo hatches and other non-essential systems to get your heat production down a bit and make fuel scooping a tad easier. While you're travelling far out there you won't need them, or at least not at a moment's notice.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  8 лет назад +2

      true... I did need the cargo hatch though since I was carrying a full load of cargo. And it felt like a bad idea going so far without a shield, even though I could have saved mass.

    • @Stahlwollvieh
      @Stahlwollvieh 8 лет назад

      Scott Manley You don't need to leave the shield generator behind, just turn it off in the modules tab, right side menu. And... I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe you can safely turn the cargo hatch off even with a full cargo hold. It will just not allow you to open it, deploy limpets and the like. Better test that one before relying on it though.

    • @vt-1493
      @vt-1493 8 лет назад +6

      It's fairly common practice to take away power from the cargo hatch whenever you aren't trying to grab something out of space. I think the lore is that it gets mechanically locked when you do that. I've flown most of my time with the hatch off, and haven't lost any cargo because of it.
      Supposedly that mechanical lock also makes your cargo immune from Hatch Breaker Limpets, but I've never tested that. It won't stop a pirate from blowing you or your cargo hatch apart with weapons though.

    still, a better game than NMS?
    people saying they're different games... not that much.
    - space combat
    - planetary landing
    - surface to space flight
    - trading
    - space stations
    - surface colonies
    - resource gathering
    - procedural generation for planet surfaces
    the only difference is you can't land on every planet on Elite yet and can't leave your ship for a walk... also maybe yet.
    Elite has basically more depth in everything.
    also, totally not saying NMS is a bad game and you shouldn't play. it's just might not be what you'd expect and maybe Elite is that game.

      I could never understand the loads of game publications and commenters stating the NMS starfields are a game-changer that's never been done before. You can't zoom out and see it from above like you can in Elite Dangerous. It's just a bunch of little balls with different colored spacemist and a single headlight shining at you representing the center.. The main difference between the galaxies being the color of that headlight.

    Was about to make a trip to the Eagle Nebula myself because I was expecting the Pillars of Creation picture to actually be in the game, and you would be able to explore it. Nah, got a hundred jumps in and gave up (was using an upgraded Viper MK4, had a poor jump range for exploration). Looked it up afterword and realized that it would have been a waste of time. On my way back to The Bubble now. At least I'll get a boatload of creds from scanning systems!

      Get some upgrades, and a better scoop. My AspX does over 40ly, and has the ability to defend itself with 6 grade 4 lightweight seekeer missile racks, all with thermal cascade. Other modifications include a grade 5 increased range fsd, enhanced low-power shields, low emissions powerplant, and a whole bunch of stuff that combines to reduce weight and heat emissions across the board. Not only does it make it a great exploration ship, I also have 8 tonnes of cargo capacity for smuggling, and can use silent running with FA off to defend myself against just about anything that interdicts me. For the big stuff, grade 5 clean engine tuning gives me 450+ m/s boost speed, and I can escape any of the bigger, slower stuff pretty easily, then high-wake out.
      Also, get a bigger fuel scoop dude. 577 is nothing on an Asp. 878 on the A-grade.

      That's true. Some people would hate Elite, but love COD. I only heard of NMS about a week before release, so I wasn't too disappointed. Still, I figured the "no spoilers" stance meant there would be things to spoil, which there wasn't. This 22k LY journey definitely appeals to me; its the kind of thing I wanna do when I start playing this.

      Indeed, a n00b trying a long journey is probably a bad idea. Can I ask, what are you using for head tracking? I noticed a very fluid look around when flying. The entire ambiance is different. No Man's Sky is way more chill than Elite, and I enjoy exploring a lot more in NMS because of the Visuals and the non realistic aspect to it.
      The game is worth buying if you correspond to its niche. Because it doesn't fit the manys taste, doesn't actually mean it can't please anyone.
      It can basically be worth buying for a shit ton of reason according to the person.

      It is beautiful, more startrek-ish exploration, and gives the 'live off the land' feeling and doesn't try and make you concerned about increasing or building up stats and wealth too much. You see something you make it, you can't you move on. It is light hearted and I think it is like comparing Civilization to Total War, not the same game as their major focus is on different things even though they share a similarities.
      Is it worth buying? It depends of the person. I know people who wouldn't touch Elite but play No Man's Sky.

      There is a ship wreck in the video. It crashed on a planet over 10000 LY from the Bubble.

      Speaking about gas clouds: did you see the nebulae in the video? The Eagle Nebula and that other orange nebula that looked like an aurora borealis? You can fly into them and explore them as you like.

      These days though, it has to do better. I mean really, does it offer any better game-play than the original Elite. I know it looks much much nicer and is flashier but as for game-play I think it needs fleshing out.

    I managed to get top 10% on the new community goal at Jaques for exploration data, although that's probably due to the fact that I performed a detailed scan on every star, detoured at least a few thousand light-years to sight-see and found a previously undiscovered black hole (with a water world in the same system, haha that reminded me of Interstellar), my first Earth-like world AND a system with four water worlds (two of which were orbiting each other) in my last 2,500 ly. I'd say it was worth every jump!

    this is one of the games flaws i cant bare, its 2299 or whatever year but no autopilot and you have to manually jump 99999999 times... that is not fun, at all tedious mechanic that makes it seem like the game is longer, but no you just wasted hours of you time looking at loading screen that makes you go crazy since it put you strait to collision with the star so you cant even get a glass of water cause you might end up in the sun if you miss when it finally loads, im still waiting for this game to be finished still feels like a shallow universe with barely anything meaningful to do in like any other early access game

    • @MrJackZhan
      @MrJackZhan 8 лет назад +2

      Actually, if you fly too close to a star, you will drop out of supercruise. You will take a little bit of damage doing this but you will drop to a speed of about several hundred meters per second. At this speed you can have a fancy dinner and your ship would still be safe and sound when you come back.

    • @grimalkin8082
      @grimalkin8082 8 лет назад +10

      I agree. An autopilot option would be nice. Perhaps for balance sake, it could take longer to make the tip on autopilot that it would with a pilot at the helm and it can't fuel scoop on its own.

    • @linkxsc
      @linkxsc 8 лет назад +2

      That'd be fine by me. Just activate autopilot, and have it alert me when low on fuel. Or if I come under attack. I'd likely just open youtube on another monitor, or read a book and listen to music most of the time anyways.

    • @grimalkin8082
      @grimalkin8082 8 лет назад +10

      randomnickify Having it auto jump from system to system isn't winning the game. It could take far longer to spool up the jump drive, it doesn't scan systems, doesn't fuel scoop. In fact, trying to do any of those things could pull it out of autopilot. When we eventually get the ability to move around on our ships, It would be good to do it while its on autopilot, or being driven by an NPCs to deal with other things they might add to the game or mingle with passengers.

    I did an exploration trip once. Intended to go to Sagittarius A*. Would have been about a 58,000Ly round-trip the way I was doing it.
    I got bored about 3,000Ly into it and turned around. Still totally worth it though; when I got back, I sold all the exploration data for around 6 million credits, slapped my name as "first discoverer" on several dozen stars and a handful of interesting bodies, and went from neutral to allied with the controlling faction. (My jump range was about 44.30Ly; I had a super-engineer-upgraded FSD)
    Maybe next time I won't chicken out!

    I propose a solution to the jump-out-at-a-star issue with Elite: Dangerous.
    The problem is that jumping out at a star is cool for the first few times and an iconic part of E:D so they don't want to get rid of it, however once you've been playing for a while it gets very tiring.
    Here's my solution: make a more expensive, larger, and less fuel efficient jump drive which pops you out further from and more to the side of a star. Now newbies will still be forced to jump near a star, and even veterans may choose it for better fuel efficiency, or if their ship is too small for the drive to be a good choice. But for those who really get tired of jumping near the star, they can make a sacrifice to get rid of it.

    Hi Scott! I just started (mebbe a month ago?), and after 77k LY travel on a carrier, we are starting the 55kLY jump back. Problem is, I'm the limiting factor at 22.3 LY per jump! It's been amazing, the 6 Earth Like Worlds (that all have my name on them XD ), the system of 11 gas giants, the double binary systems have ALL made this trip worth it.
    Do you still play Elite?

      I do like to fly around for fun from time to time, waiting for space legs though.

    good run congrats at maintaining some sanity. now that they put a few desired engineers out there I'm trying to decide if its worth my own sanity using a stripped down engineered asp explorer then the credits it will cost to have my real ship transferred. I'd at least expect to see elite status in exploration before the meds kick in.

    I also made the trip out there at about 26-ish light year jumps and I am having a great time here now because I am finally being left alone and have plenty of exploration opportunities, as well as mining. Granted the station doesn't have enough ships yet for me to properly outfit another miner (I'm currently using my favorite Asp Explorer). I am planning on staying here for a while until I finish my Explorer ranks, then maybe do my miner ranks too. By the way, has anyone else lost the ability to bookmark stars/planets?

    Ugh. My Python is stranded at Jacques. I messed up, crashed it, and when insurance replaced it I hit the wrong button and ended up with a default load out. My class A scoop and highly tuned hyperdrive disappeared and left me with a 5LY jump limit instead of the 50LY one that I had. I haven't had the stomach to go through the thousands of jumps required to go home, so I just abandoned the game a couple of years ago. I should really get back into Elite, as it was amazing to play with the HOTAS Warthog and Oculus Rift.

    Hey Scott! I was thinking about taking a 160LY trip with my Asp Explorer and I need a better fuel scoop. Do you know where I could find one like the one you have in this video?

    Scott you are a braver man than I. I happened to be in Sol and just went to Arque and went bounty hunting.

    Holy balls, 800 jumps!?
    Damn space, you big! I mean like, on a scale of one to ten, you rate in as an even "fuck that".
    That's some dedication, man. I'll see if I can make it out there, but I can't promise anything too spectacular. I'm still getting my deep space skills down pat before I decide to go too far out.

      John Smith I'm still pretty green as an explorer, I've ventured to the pleiades nebula before the barnacles arrived, and went out to the orion nebula, both in a cobra. I still get nervous going back out in my Asp, still gotta get down the methodology and make sure I don't get stuck or blow out my canopy (haven't had it happen yet, but I've been driven back to the bubble by the damage incurred on traveling those distances and messing up repeatedly). Going to be grateful for that filtered path mechanic, can plot my path through the more interesting prospective stars capable of being scooped and capable of having earthlikes/amonia worlds/water worlds/terraformable worlds.

      baby steps i suppose as for blowing out your canopy what the heck are you doing flying to close to stars trying to scoop?

      John Smith Caught unaware by one too many white dwarfs, or just being too hasty in the scooping process. Either way, I usually puss out and run back the moment I hear cracking. You know what they say, haste makes waste.

    Its very pretty, but I wonder how realistic it is. I read an astronomy book awhile back and it stated that if you were in a theoretical startship heading to the Orion nebula for instance it would fade away into nothingness as you got closer to it.

    I have a question, how rare a metallic rings around planets as opposed to metal rich ones? Is it 1 in 10, 1 in 100, ect..., Been traveling for a while and have yet to see one, was wondering if you knew the odds.

    I'm very new to Elite: Dangerous and really want to get into exploration and venturing out across the galaxy, but only have my starter ship. What is the good way of making money in ED? I don;t mind grinding missions, or trading, if that's the way to go but am a little overwhelmed currently.

    I bought this awhile ago but haven't played it yet. I was going to see if I could find my joystick first, which I never did. I have been playing other things and never started Elite. It looks awesome and I need to play it. I doubt I can do max settings but the graphics are awesome.
