I too was not initially interested in this pattern. However my mother was recently complaining about her sagging neck skin and I got the idea to knit her some and it’s been a hit for her to wear stylishly and for me to knit meditatively! Win-win!
such a win-win!
Thank you for your talk on Sophie Scarf, enjoyed your tutorial and your lovely Scarfs.
After I started knitting sophie scarves I find myself putting that same i-cord edge on other projects that don't call for it. I find it makes the edges SO pristine!! Right now I'm doing that edge on the strap/belt of a wrap around sweater and it's absolutely perfect. I would like to make a sophie shawl. I wonder if it's made the same way, just with more increases, or if there are other differences in the pattern.
same! I feel like it made me fall in love with the I-cord edging. Also, I want to make a Sophie shawl perhaps in the coming fall or winter.
You may consider a free pattern on Ravelry called the "Schelpje." I've knit 3 Sophie Scarfs: an olive green tweed, a denim blue tweed, & a pinky/peach soft wool. Almost as addictive as socks!🥰💕🧶
so fun! I just looked up Schelpje and favorited it. Thank you!
Thank you for recommending Schelphe! I've added it to my Ravelry library. It looks like a nice design!
Great reflection on the Sophie scarf. I love the pink scarf the best! I will be casting this on my needles next. Thank you!
I know these scarves are so fun to make! I made one out of a cotton linen blend, which I really like. Happy knitting, glad you came up on my feed.
Two RUclips tutorials by The Ginger Ninja Journals helped me with the start and finish of the Sophie Scarf. It gave helpful directions on the i-cord edging, increases, and decreases.
I have only made one so far- it is in a grey, undyed alpaca yarn that I bought from an alpaca rescue in the Tacoma, WA area so it was very special to me since I met the rescued alpaca the yarn came from, and it reminded me of where I consider home (I live on the east coast now). I started this project on a whim and stayed up all night to finish it the night before my partner and I eloped at the courthouse because I thought it would go well with my mushroom skirt that I wore. It was worth it!
oh that's so sweet that you met the rescued Alpaca. that is such a sweet Sophie scarf! I've heard of people that can knit one in a day/night. I am not one of those people lol
@@professorpurl haha, I mean it took me ALL. NIGHT. 🤣 I was worried I'd look exhausted in all my photos from that day and we were later than expected getting to the courthouse because we went to a coffee shop first... Drip coffee wouldn't cut it, I needed several shots of espresso 😁
I was gifted this pattern 🎉 and can’t wait to make it. Thank you for your video, it definitely looks like there’s many options.
Happy knitting 🧶🤩❣️
yay!
I saw a review of the Sophie scarf on another YT channel and was not impressed. Your presentation absolutely won me over. I have all the yarn combinations that you have knitted and will start as soon as I purchase the pattern. Also, just found your channel and subcribed.
aww thanks! welcome!
Love the Sophie scalf , ive made 6 and don't think I've stopped 💛
I like the wider version better.
How wide is it?
How much yarn did it take?
If I am afraid of not having enough yarn, should I use bigger needles? I loved your warm-hearted presentation .
I only discovered the Sophie scarf about three weeks ago. I instantly loved it and purchased the pattern. I am a fairly new knitter but have made icords in knit and crochet but never on a garment. Being I live in Florida where it’s pretty hot all year long I decided to make my Sophie scarf in a very soft, lovely cotton. Also blue. I wear a lot of denim, so I figured it would go with so many things.
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten attached to an accessory as I have with this little scarf.
You’ve inspired me to make a wardrobe of them also.
aww thanks for sharing! It's such a great little pattern/scarf!!
loved your video. I want to make one and if I have left over yarn, I might make some mitts to wear with it!
A few more to add to your bundle. I've not tried these yet. Vineyard Scarf by Lene Rix, Skyward Kerchief by Toni Lipsey (crochet, 783Nora did a "sophie-esque" version), Disturbia Shawl by Hanna Gough (crochet), Airy Breeze by Gretha Mensen, Autumn Comes by Lisa Hannes, The Simple Thing by Melina Brell (free, very much like Sophie), Elin Bandana Scarf by Katrine Hannibal (I love the stripes!), Itsy Bitsy Ascot by Jocy McCormack (stockinette tube), Simply Irresistible by Christie Archer (stockinette tube)
Louann! What a gem you are! I just looked each of these up and saved them to my "little scarves" bundle. WOW! It's kind of mind blowing to me how many adorable "tiny" scarves there are :) thanks for sharing!
@@professorpurl I'm going to check your bundle. I tag these "scarfette" in my Rav favorites. 😜
I am knitting my first Sophie scarf with Miss Babs yarn. Thank you for showing your finished scarves. I wasn't sure how big the large would be. I have yarn for a Sophie Shawl next by Red Stagg Fiber. This is a great pattern.
I love the Sophie scarf. I’ve made 5 or so. Working on modifying the Sophie by making it thinner.
Me too 😊
I've had the pattern for Sophie's scarves for some time. You've inspired me to make one now - will be casting on this evening!!
so fun!
Thank you so much for this video I was on the fence because the others I saw looked too small. I definitely like the wrap around at least 1 time. Seeing your projects done up and draped around you really made me want to make one now!! 😊 I am a subscriber now too!!
I am actually working on a Sophie scarf while watching this!! I ended up using US6 and holding my fingering weight yarn single. I'm LOVING it!!!
so fun!
Two suggestions for alternatives:
•The Pool Shawl by Pia Trans of FiftyFabulousKnits - she suggests/has made just a tiny one with a small bit of leftover yarn and uses it as a shawl collar! It has beautiful texture and drape.
•Knitting Badge Neckerchief by Niklas Heed is FREE and simple but interesting!
Both are projects I hope to make soon!
both of these are super great suggestions! thank you!
I love the idea of holding fingering weight double for this pattern. I usually don't like really snug things around my neck, like in the sample photo you first showed. However, the way you tie the Hamburg scarf looks really comfortable and stylish.
thanks! :)
Thanks for this video. I’ve started a Sophie a couple of times. Made a mistake and given up. (Very beginning Knitter, here!😜) I will try again.
Your pink scarf is so beautiful! Lovely yarn.
I think it’s interesting that such a relatively simple garment has become so hugely popular. There is now a Crochet version, called the Lucy Scarf.
Please keep sharing your scarves! 🥰🌻🐝
I just went looking for the Lucy Scarf and found it. I feel like a little crochet scarf might be the way for me to work on my (poor) crochet skills!
I've made a sophie scarf in Crux Fibres silk linen yarn and made it extra long. It's beautiful and feels so nice! Then I made one with bulky/itchy yarn. haha It looks good, but I don't like the feel of it. I made a couple with superwash sock yarn held double - different yarns so you get a marled effect. One has a different coloured tip (cuz I ran out of yarn), but i like the colour blocked look. This pattern is definitely addictive! I hardly ever make the same pattern twice (except socks), but this one has me hooked.
oooooo the crux fibers silk linen sounds just lovely! yes, it's so fascinating how this hooked me! (though I do love making patterns more than once)
I've been tempted to purchase either the sophie scarf or shawl (I can't tell what I would prefer!) but I also feel a bit reluctant to spend money on something I feel like I should be able to freehand for myself 🤦♀Although obviously the fact that I haven't is a good reason to just bite the bullet and try what is clearly a very popular pattern!
@the_knit_owl look at The Simple Thing by Melina Brell
Louann found a really awesome good dupe for the Sophie scarf that is free!
I have yet to knit a Sophie scarf, but I think it would be really cute for my toddlers and I may have to cast one on! The Italian Knitter just released a similar looking one, I think it’s called an Italian summer scarf. It’s similar to the Sophie scarf but has eyelet rows too, and looks nice!
I can see it being really good for littles. MJ always plays with mine!
Please please I need the pattern
Hi I’m making the Sophie scarf but I’m having a hard time counting my rows. Do you have any tips?
Thank you for sharing this. Loving your podcasts 💕
thanks so much! I put in a stitch marker (either a lightbulb or a progress keeper on the increase stitch). Then I count the garter rows after that and know when I need to do the next increase. I hope that helps!
They are beautiful , I made one and will make more also , I too think will mix up the yarn to personalize it
thanks!
Sari Nordlund has one called the Soul Sister Scarf that I've been wanting to try 😊
so adorable! I just favorited it on Ravelry!!
Ive knitted 2, I used a cotton yarn, fear of mohair itching especially against the neck. I love the process of knitting this pattern. Will be making some for December gifts for sure.
oh I love the idea of a cotton one! I need to try that. I was surprised that alpaca itched me and mohair did not!
I've not knit a Sophia scarf but I found a free pattern by Jill Ramos Design called Cozy Cravat that is fun it has Knits, Purls, M1R and SSk.
fun! I am having a hard time finding that on Ravelry for some reason.
I’ve been meaning to make one and just haven’t made any decisions on yarn yet!
it's great for the special skein you might not have plans for and do not want on your feet
I just finished my second Sophie’s Scarf and will be casting on a 3rd! XxxRichalyn
so fun!
I have my eye on the Telma scarf as well as the Polkagris Kerchief. They might be worth you checking out.
I just looked these both up and WOW. So so so cute. I created a Ravelry bundle called "little scarves" now :)
A Sophie shwl😍, I made 5 Sophie scarfs, and loved them all, but the first one, wrong colour. I gifted them all, and then I made myself the Sophie shawl, in the same dark brown, with special homespun yarn, and I love it, did not get much wear out of it, so I have some thing to look forward to in fall. I need to make some more, but summer sock camp camp starts today,so socks it is,for awhile.i have a Sari Nordlund small shawl, neck piece in my library, can’t remember the name., It’s Laulu. Take care, Melissa.
I am very interested in doing a Sophie Shawl for the fall/winter. Summer sock camp does start today! thanks for the reminder. I saw in Kay's video that WIPs count. At first I was not going to do it because I have 20+ single pairs, but then I was like well if WIPs count then I am in!
I saw today two free ones on Arab that you might like to try- Schelpje by Natasja Hornsby, and a longer one An Italian Summer Scarf by An Italian Knitter. 😊
wow! these are so cute too! thanks for sharing
Hi I'm a beginner level knitter even though I've knit for years and I'm confused by the Sophie scarf pattern. The yarn the pattern calls for is held double. Does that mean it's fingering weight? I'd like to use a DK weight yarn can I do this held single with the recommended needle size? Thanks.
You can definitely do a DK weight yarn held single for this pattern!
Thankyou 😊
What size needle did you use with dk weight yarn?
How do you knit the size large? (I have the pattern but can't figure it out)
there's two sets of number provided for how wide you knit it. So, use the larger set of numbers. essentially they are knit exactly the same, just one is longer than the other.
Love ❤️ ❤❤❤the Sophie scarf. I call them potato chip knitting, one can not knit just one.
Hello from St.Louis Missouri!
Hi Janet!
Anica shawl is lovely free and looks about the same size it has a bit more interesting work
Hi! Nice episode! Just Subscribe! Made 3 Sophie scarfs in different colors and fiber too! Great gifts! Found another nice scarf "free" pattern on Raverly. ... "Be Simple Variations"!!! Enjoy! Happy Knitting!🧶
thanks so much! welcome! I will check that out :)
I working with a self striping yarn
You should try camel for a Sophie Scarf. It is sooooo soft
I've never knit with camel!
Math and me: 🤨😧😟😒🥱🥴😤 So glad u teach math. Im a very beginner knitter. And yes math is involved. So... Maybe i can learn it with CO. I did enjoy ur perspective tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
