  • In the last episode of this season of Bangladesh Food Series, Anubhav is joining our gracious host Sushmita - a young food blogger from Dhaka - at her residence for a soulful traditional fishy meal in order to find out more about the culinary culture of her community which is the Hindu Bengali community. We started this journey with a visit to the Krishi Bazar with our friend Anish to get some fresh hilsa fish for our hosts.Anish gave us a quick overview about the country’s national fish and then helped us purchase a good one from numerous options. Since it wasn’t the right season, we couldn’t get hold of a fresh catch.
From there we straight away reached Susmita’s house where we were welcomed by her gracious parents and some of her friends. Susmita had invited us for a traditional lunch spread featuring a few of their family favourite fish delicacies. Except for two things, almost all of the cooking was done beforehand to save time. As her mother prepared the shorshe ilish we joined her and her father for a brief conversation regarding their food traditions. Fish and vegetables dominate their everyday meal and rice is the staple food.
Finally we joined Susmita for the meal. The tempting spread included rice, bottle gourd dal, shorshe ilish, chingri malai curry, aalu bhaja, potol bhaja, begun bhorta, pabda macher jhol and muri ghonto. We started with the bhaja and then moved on to dal and finally the fish dishes. Malai chingri was creamy because of coconut milk, pabda jhol was light because of the non use of onion, garlic and spices and shorshe ilish was rich and piquant because of the mustard paste.
For dessert we had patishapta, gokul pithe, tomato chatni and papod. Just like the Ghoti dishes from Bengal, Bangladeshi Hindu community's food is light on spices and dependant on seasonal ingredients.
After this we tried some rosogolla chai and malai chai at a newly opened chai point.

I am from West Bengal, I can understand that first impression of hilsa generally don't go down well with if you are not a hardcore Bengali. But hilsa is like classical music, first you have to acquire the taste of it and develop your ear to listen to it. Same with hilsa once you develop the taste buds for it then no looking back.

Ilish is not JUST a fish. It's an emotion... a tradition... It's integral to Bengali culture. It binds Bengalis beyond borders. It can also be an acquired taste for those who haven't had it since childhood. It is also unfortunately part of cross border smuggling and trafficking, and over-fishing of ilish is endangering the existence of the whole species. West Bengal government even runs seasonal campaigns during the monsoon/breeding season to not consume khoka/young fishes so as to let them grow to a certain size in order to be consumed. It is now a punishable offence.

Very well said . Unfortunately the supplies of Ilish mach from the mighty Padma have dwindled over the years . A lot is exported to the west . However following a strict ban on jatka hatchling fishing ( which is imposed during Pahela Baishakh which does dampen our festivities ) the size and quality of the fish has improved .

Only in our society we feel so obligated in dissecting another person's past history. We are so comfortable in thinking the beautiful host has watched too many Hindi movies and serial to speak Hindi in such fluency. India is our neighboring country and both our languages share common ancestry, so there is nothing wrong in speaking fluent Hindi with another Hindi speaker. Also, she is obviously a brilliant student, who, perhaps, has a gift of learning languages. People need to be open about learning new skills and using those skills when appropriate.
As far as food is concerned, her family came either from Khulna, Jessore or Faridpur/Gopalgang district. My mom's side of the family is from Faridpur/Gopalgang district and her cooking looks like the dishes shown at 7:55, with minor differences like the hilsha will have some onions and lau/daal will not have any sugar in it. In the grand scale, differences in Bengali Hindu and Bengali Muslim cuisines are negligible (barring beef and pork).
Also, I urge every Bangladeshi not to say Hindu community, Buddhist community, Christian community, Chakma community, Shaotal community. Everyone in Bangladesh is one community which Bangladeshi community. We should never forget that many people, regardless of their respective religion and culture, gave their lives to establish our beloved country, Bangladesh.
I am a Muslim. I am a Bangladeshi. I am proud to see this beautiful host, Sushmita Das, presenting her Bengali family, Bengali culture and Bengali food to the whole world. Is it so hard to appreciate that? I hope not.
As for Anubhav, you are a wonderful host and thank you for choosing Bangladesh this time around.

Bengalis are known for their respect of feminine power, it's historically has always been the land of Shakti (Maa Durga, Kali). Good to see that although Bangladesh is a muslim majority nation, it has a female PM as well the leader of opposition is also a woman, that's pretty much unthinkable for other more fundamentalist Islamic nation like Iran or Afghanistan. I hope such progressive mindset amongst fellow Bengalis keep on ushering new heights for Bangladesh.

Correct it is Malaysian so malaikari prawn. Earlier bengalis used to do trade with outer countries on the sea. We find instances in Devi manasa story where chand saudagar used to make voyeges on the sea for trade. Last instance was grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore who was second richest of India because of trade on the sea having his own jahaj.

Such a great SHOW! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Loved the Bengali Khabar from Dacca! Felt like home cooked meal in Kolkata. FELT soooo hungry sitting in Larchmont, New York on a rainy afternoon! Cheers to our young hostess and her command of Hindi. The Cha here is completely unique! Perhaps a rosogolla without the ros, may work better.

Dadaaaa! Bhalo toh? Bahut aunda episode hai. Hum bhi daily subha maach bajar jaate hai ...haan lekin pehle sabji bajar karte hai phir maach bajar ghooste hai. West Bengal and Bangladesh families me koi difference nahi hai dada. Bas partition ke baad kuch log idhar agye , kuch udhar reh gye. Sub continent is very complex dada. Aap ko message karna chahta hu but i am not sure where to message you in private so you read it. Would like to connect with Sushmita but I am not on instagram. Any other platform?

This is actually the authentic Bengali cuisine before the Islamisation of Bengal took place. The primary food for Bengalis have always been fish.
Biryani, chaap, kaaliya, murgh-musallam, mughlai Paratha etc aren't typical Bengali foods they were brought in by Arab, Persian or Turkic folks and slowly was incorporated into the Bengali diet.

We bengali Bangladeshi muslims still eating fish and rice on our regular 3times meal. We Bengalis have always welcomed foreign food and later cook foreign food in our own style. . Fish torkari(Indian cary), vegetables, Dal, rice, vorta, etc is our common regular 3times meal...

bangladeshi muslims all eat those food shown in the video on a daily basis the only difference is we add onion and garlic. Fish is the staple food of all bengali bangladeshi muslim families. Hindus eat biryani in bangladesh as much as muslims.

We Bengali people in India use this type of ghee only. Best flavour.
And we extensively use mustard oil.

Sarisha tel is also used in the diet of Bangladeshis ! Nowadays a lot of people are going back to Shorisha because of its health benefits .
Bharta Khichuri Achar and Mach cannot be prepped without that pungent kick of Sharisha!
