  • We visited Hampton Plantation, a rice plantation owned at one time by the Horry family, Pickney family, and finally the Rutledge family. The plantation home was originally built in 1735 with several additions over the years. in 1790, the front porch was added with 8 doric columns and and an Adamesque frieze and pediment gable, which became the signature architectural element of a Georgian plantation home. It is the first known example of that architecture.
There are examples of how they managed the rice plantation. The state has done a great job of showing the work done by slaves in South Carolina at the time.
