I was lucky that one of those Marines opened his dojo a half hour from the small Iowa town I grew up in. I was only able to train with him for about six months. It took me 23 years to make it back. After another 8 years of training, I earned my Shodan last month.
Isshin was my first Okinawan Karate style I ever trained in. Since then, I trained in Uechi Ryu and Southern Praying Mantis, but, I've always held a soft spot for Shimabuku's style.
I began Isshin Ryu in 1964 and went on with GoJu Ryu and Mu Dong Kung Fu over the decades. Now 60 years later I revere Isshin Ryu for its deep spiritual foundation. "Still water runs deep".
Isshin-Ryu Karate is made from the 5 Systems: Shoyabashi Shorin-Ryu Karate Koyabashi Shorin-Ryu Karate Goju-Ryu Karate Motobu-Ryu Udon Ti / Te Kobudo (Okinawan Weaponry) Much respect and gratitude for this Presentation.
Interesting presentation... in my opinion, only truth matters. Either a style works or it doesn't. Determining what works is key... against what someone may face today; BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, MMA have taken center stage, because they work in actual combat. If a style doesn't work today, against these other arts, then it will either adapt or die out. When I was a kid, Karate was all the rage, then in the 90's it failed miserably against BJJ in UFC. Now all I see are children studying Karate and adults studying other arts.
