  • Thanks to Koei Tecmo for a review code of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty!
A new dark fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG from Team NINJA, the developers of Nioh.
184 AD, Later Han Dynasty China. The land is overcome by chaos and destruction. The imperial dynasty that prospered for many years is now about to collapse.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dramatic, action-packed story of a nameless militia soldier fighting for survival in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty where demons plague the Three Kingdoms. Players fight off deadly creatures and enemy soldiers using swordplay based on the Chinese martial arts, attempting to overcome the odds by awakening the true power from within.
Wo Long refers to a crouching dragon, and also refers to a hero or person of greatness who is not yet known. This is the story of officers, who will later become heroes, during their ‘unknown’ period, and also the story of a protagonist’s rise from being a ‘nobody’.
A dark fantasy set during the chaotic Three Kingdoms period, the narrative vividly tells the tale of a militia soldier’s strenuous fight for survival during a Later Han Dynasty infested with demons. It’s madness in the Three Kingdoms like never before!
Defeat deadly enemies to boost morale and awaken the power from within! Overcome adversity through unique new strategies, including battle styles based on the “Five Phases”.
Renowned for ruthless strikes that can change the tide of battle in an instant, sword practitioners of the Chinese martial arts gracefully change pace as they shift between offensive and defensive maneuvers. Overwhelm opponents with a flurry of force in a series of intense and bloody battles while learning the precision and skill necessary to become a true master of the sword.
Choose from a wide variety of weapons, from glaives to dual swords, to discover which fits your fighting style.
This secret art draws upon the power of the Five Phases, which allow for attacks using such elements as flames and ice. Upon achieving higher Morale Ranks, you can gain the ability to utilize even more powerful Wizardry Spells.
Divine Beasts like Zhuque and Baihu are brought forth through alliances with other warriors. By calling upon these Divine Beasts, you are able to perform feats of great power.

Most people probably know who the blind folded boy/youth is by now, but its cool how the post credits scene reveals his identity without ever showing his name. Benefit of being strongly associated with iconic item.

Actually in Chinese he says his name. It's just the English sub which avoid it. Although I like it more when the name is not revealed directly like that.

He’s Zhuge Liang, courtesy named Kong Ming. The folks knew him as Master Wo Long. I'm guessing that's one reason they chose the title.

@@LutherPlaysGames Lol, you can't have a Three Kingdom game without Zhuge Liang. The last scene gave it away for me. Zhuge Liang is usually picturized with a feathered fan, which you can see in the "present" and his dream. According to the legend, Zhuge Liang was a hermit in a "remote village" until Liu Bei visited him three times to invite him as an advisor. Although separated from the outside world (blind), Zhuge Liang predicted how the country was going to be split into three kingdoms and helped Liu Bei to hold one of them. In the boy's vision, he saw the Red Cliffs battle against Cao Cao, whose defeat set the foundation for Liu Bei's power. In the dream, you can also tell the person with a feathered fan was sitting in a wheelchair and had his last breath. That's Zhuge Liang's demise after the battle of Wuzhang Plains. It's amazing how faithful a fantasy game can be to the Three Kindom story. Respect to the writers! But after all, this is all according to the Romance of Three Kingdoms or folklore, not the real history.

That grab attack is still bullshit though

Based on the names of the DLC, none of which seem to lead into the 3 Kingdoms warfare. So it feels like this game leads to what will be a second Wo Long game.
The DLC stories sound like they will focus on Cao Caos rise to power and the Wei forces (Even though Guan Du/Yuan Shao story took place in main game), the Sun Clan's official founding of Wu under Sun Ce and Lui Bei's escape to Cheng Du for the founding of Shu.
The last one would very likely tie into the games main ending as Zhuge Liang historically became Shu's grand tactician, rivalled only by Sima Yi (Who is referenced) and Suns Zhou Yu (Who is shown)
Either way, looking forward to see what they cook up for the DLC and potentially a sequel. Another Let's Play in the books. Keep at it Cowboy 👍 Love the content.

After getting my platinum over the past weekend and playing through some of NG+, I believe the somewhat lacking enemy variety is an intentional choice on Team Ninja's part.
Wo Long's combat is a _really_ different beast to Nioh's, particularly Nioh 2. Nioh 2 had pretty decent enemy variety, but for the most part, you could just beast mode them all down; the only thing you really needed to learn was the different timings for the three different burst counters. Brute needs to be thrown out pretty much the instant you see red or you'll miss it because of its slow startup. Feral needs some distance or you'll overshoot. Phantom needs good timing, as it happens in place.
Wo Long, on the other hand, you need to learn deflect timings not only for each enemy, but also for your chosen weapons, as each weapon has its own timing. I played around with all of them (though I mained spear & dual sabres) and found the poleaxe/hammer timing especially difficult, so I was always ecstatic whenever I came across one with the Impregnable Keep martial art.
Now imagine if the game had even just double the number of enemy types. I think that would just overload some players, especially newer players, and despite a few missteps (and a lack of QoL features, like transmog preview and being able to change martial arts, for instance), I think their goal was to streamline things, because the biggest complaints I've always seen about Nioh is that there's just too much going on: too much gear, too many gear effects, too many skills, etc.
Wo Long _drastically_ scaled back on those things, so while the deflect mechanic offers a sharper learning curve compared to Nioh, overall it feels like a much easier game to learn.
I imagine we might get a couple new enemy types in the DLCs, similar to Nioh 1, and if we get a Wo Long 2, we'll see those enemy types, and possibly more, incorporated into the game, since most people who would play a Wo Long 2 are going to be those who want more of Wo Long.
At least, that's how I see it.

Martial Arts still can't be switched or even have 2 divine beasts, and the rate of 5 stars weapon with ok martial arts is ridiculous somehow.

The two scenes seen by the blindfold boy at the end, are probably the Battle of Chibi, and his own death years later. The battle shows Zhou Yu giving order to fire flame arrows and Cao Cao's army engulfed in flames, both are iconic of Chibi (red cliff). And then it cuts to him dying with his fan in hand, while his own star falling. This is a very iconic imagery of Zhuge Liang's death. The two events are over two decades apart. I think the game is just trying to show that he is foreseeing the defining battle of the era, and his own death. By this it also confirms his identity.
The DLCs sounds like sequence of events leading towards Chibi, but not the battle itself. I hope Team Ninja makes a second game focusing on Chibi proper and later events.
Thanks for the let's play. It's fun to play the game then watch your videos to see a very different approach. Great game from Team Ninja as always, a bit less polished and fleshed out than Nioh 2, but quite enjoyable in its own right. Some bosses like first Lu Bu fight, Zhang Liao, and the Blindfold Boy felt to me better than all Nioh bosses, which is quite something.

I think you might be getting your battles confused. I know what battle you're thinking of, but the battle shown in that scene is the one where Zhuge Liang dies before it's finished, and that battle comes after the infamous river attack.

i think the game was lacking in a lot of areas, weak level design, no enemy variety, the combat is fine i guess, although it just feels like a shitty clone of sekiro x code vein. i like the flag system, thats probably the most unique thing about the game. the story was pretty boring to me, evil dude being evil for the sake of being evil, havent had that one before. nioh2 had the same story, but at least they fixed it with the dlc where they gave us a backstory. and nioh1 just did this concept right, kelley was just an entertaining dude, ill never forget his amazing laugh/ his voice acting in general was 10/10. overall id say, worse than nioh 1 &2 but still worth playing, it was fun, although a little short.
