Answered Prayers is the book. The people in the scene are Truman Capote, Ann Woodward, Truman's mother Lillie Mae and one of her husbands.

Back in the late 1980s when I first moved to San Francisco, I met a gentleman from New York who was in his mid-fifties. He briefly worked with Truman Capote in the late 70s/early 80s. He said he was a sad and shadowy figure, definitely suffering from addiction and mental illness and for the most part the drunk person you saw in the infamous Stanley Siegal television interview. He was also quite mean and condescending. HOWEVER, my old acquaintance told me he briefly saw Capote lucid a few times...and for a bright, shining moment he saw the witty person that Capote was.

I think his mother was mentally ill and took all her frustrations out on Truman, she was narcissistic and cruel , too. Truman's mother harmed a innocent 20 year old, for the rest of his life he carried her sick berating. That's how he new what kind of mother's the Swans where. I feel empathy for him.

@michaelswinford4674 IT all depends how much you know about the actual woman, Ann Woodward. For myself, she's not the woman I read about in her biography. Ann-Margret did a TV movie, The Two Mrs Grenvilles, based on her story. She did a great job as the X showgirl trying to fit in to the High Wasp lifestyle.
