Every War Thunder player is very familiar with the infamous M18 Hellcat US tank destroyer. The M18 combines an incredibly mobile chassis with a powerful gun and otherwise solid characteristics (except for armor), and it is a menace to vehicles like the Panther and Tiger. The M8A1 is essentially the low tier equivalent to Hellcat, but it seems to be largely forgotten. It's unfortunate that it is decently rare. I actually didn't request it from Gaijin, I bought it with my first YT paycheck.

@@asukahasegawa not really any practical difference though…metric and imperial both just use decimals. Like 10.2km/s or 6.2mi/s. We use metric because that’s what everyone else uses.

This thing is basically a worse Chaffee, but at an equally fun BR. 2.7 is amazing, and it fits really well there. I wish I had it.

I do this all the time. Even when frontally facing them. Even at 1km range. It simply works.
I even kill M10s and such with it.
Me too. Whenever I spot something open top I just switch to HE. It’s a one shot even on bad hits.
HE is extremely underrated. Even small caliber HE is incredibly effective against anything open topped.
The M8A1 is just a fun little box. It's a goofy ahh tank.

The chaffee is so good. I bring it with my 5.3 lineup and it performs even in full uptiers to 6.3. 5:05
It can reliably penetrate pretty much anything from the back at 4.7 for me
Yep, it’s a great chassis. Low profile and mobile with good reverse gears, the gun is still capable but can be a little weak at 5.0+.
Just gotta hold your fire and find shots of opportunity.

@@idiom2805 No one likes WT. But we do love that adrenaline rush. That dopamine hit when you land that crisp shot in a King tiger's ammo rack with a Sherman. That is why we come back again and again. The snail will die once GHPC comes out with MP tho

@@swagguy2171 I don't like WT but I do like to have fun with my friends. We do all sorts of stupid shit like rushing in with M22s and stuff. The reason I don't like the game is because of inconsistency. I shot a Panther 3 times with APDS in the ammo rack with my M41A1 after killing the turret crew but it turned his ammo into rainbow. Got killed, used a back-up, shot the same guy in ammo rack again ( he sat in the same spot. Don't know what the galaxy brain was thinking ) and this time his turret becomes the first Third Reich spaceship. In another battle, I was hiding behind a dead tank in M41A1, shot a tiger in the face killing his driver and turning his turret crew into candies, he responds with a glancing shot to my turret in an empty space, the shell, instead of passing clean through, pulls of insane stunts around the interior and hits the first stage ammo stowage. Another reason why I hate WT is the player base. M18s will rush into friendly arty despite being warned in chat and seeing the brown smoke. Like buddy, you are in a tank destroyer. Sit back and support us. Your speed is for getting to advantageous positions early on. You are NOT supposed to take on 5 enemy heavy tanks on your own. Let my Jumbo distract them and you pick them off from a distance.
Which would be scarier; a Pack of these M8A1s, or a M22 Locust swarm?

M8A1s tbh. The meme of M22s bullying tanks with no gun depression is funny, but they need to actually close distance to do anything with their 37mm gun. The M8A1s meanwhile have a gun that punches well above their BR, and that 75 can kill you at a decent range.

there seems to be a thing where any open top vehicle, when it gets hit with HE of any caliber, it dies no matter what.
Would you ever consider playing any of the Panzer 35/38 (t) vehicles? Maybe sprinkle in some history tidbits about them? They're unique b/c IIRC they're the only German tanks at that BR with verticle stabilizers.
Plus some shells don't have tracers which is great for being sneaky
The M8A1 is the first rare tank I got from one of the chest. I absolutely love it.
One of my favorites! Best thing I ever bought on the marketplace. I wish the Snail would move it to rank 2 and improve the modifiers accordingly. The US 2.7 lineup is my favorite to run for the daily BP easy task (M5A1, M4A3 105, Baby Hellcat, F4U Corsair, either the P-40 or the Wildcat as a second CAS/anti-CAS, the M16 MGMC, and the M3 Grant).
If you want to keep up the streak of weird light prototypes, there's always the Breda 501.
Hey Spookston, could you do a video on the Type 93 please? Also, Gaijin decided to give it a 11k repair cost which is absurd in my opinion.
Maybe you don't know but this tank is the best for top tier hunting, it's small enough to hide and the main gun is strong enough to penetrate most of modern tank's side. I have this one and I love it.

You know what, I will try the chaffee at 5.7. I have been putting myself off uptiering it because it lacks APCR but eh, we'll see how it goes.
You don’t want to use APCR because your goal is to hit other vehicles in the side or maybe frontal weakspots with APHE.
There’s rarely a reason for any tank to ever use APCR.
@@kimjanek646 There are multiple reasons for tanks with APHE to carry/use APCR: Literally the Jumbo 75 against a Panther or Tiger E front on, The 76mm M1 cannon needs APCR when it meets a KT II H, same for the T-34-85 (BR 5.7), APCR in the M36 GMC allows me to snipe Tiger II (P)'s & Panthers on their front plates on maps with extremely long ranges. As much as APCR has pathetic spall, it still has better penetration characteristics than APHE. I would argue that if German mains in their Tigers and Panthers carried APCR, that they'd have less of an issue when trying to take down the Jumbo's they so fiercly loath (As you might have guessed I don't play Germany but I have taken a very extensive look at their ammunition, guns and armour). Never underestimate the usefuleness of APCR.

You really telling me that you will pick a fight on long range against a tank that you can only penetrate in the turret, with a shell that only knocks out 1-2 crews, while the enemy can kill you with one shot that hits your tank anywhere?
@@kimjanek646 I assume the tank I'm using in question is either the T-34-85 or the M4a3 (76W) and the enemy in question is a KT IIH. Yes I would pick a fight with him at longer ranges (if I have cover, I'm not an idiot), yes I would load APCR and try to snipe out his gunner/commander or loader, yes I know he can one shot me anywhere he pleases. But think about the euphoria you'd get afterwards knowing you temporarily disabled/knocked out a KT II H with a 76mm m1/85mm Zis-S-53 cannon.
@@cyberdroid2300 Both guns won’t even be able to penetrate the turret with APCR above something like 300m 🙃
Even with a 90mm gun, it’s rarely worth bringing APCR just to damage 2-3 tanks from the front that you can otherwise take out with a single APHE sideshot.
A video on the Churchill VII would be really interesting, the solid shot pain is real but properly angled churchill seems to be indestructible

I did the whole event grind for the M8A1 and I301 when they first came out. Love both vehicles though

I love it at 4.7-5.0 you can get a 75mm to a good ambush spot pretty fast. One of my favorites tanks.
I love this thing so much, and it’s got a solid lineup to back it up as well. Stuart, Lee, 105 Sherman, and P-40
Maybe worth checking out the m47/m48. They have the highest velocity heat shells in the game at around 1200 m/s, as well as being super mobile for mediums and having great survivability

I got to agree with him at 5:05 that the M24 Chaffee is very good and my favorite tank in the game.
the IL-2 at 3.0 is a CAS animal with 23mm that pen 40 m, and it has fab-100 or 250's with potent rockets too. i can just rack up kills and get filled with bulletholes but the airframe is so strong it doesnt care, and it can take out other planes too. love it
I honestly haven't played War Thunder in a long time.
Specifically remember grinding this out during the 2014 Christmas Event, putting in hours every night (because I was trash) to get the required kills with the Panzer IV and T-34 to get my daily achievements. All while starting a new job.
I got the M8A1, and basically haven't played WT since. Weird looking back almost 10 years later, remembering playing the closed Beta, and to see how far the game has come since.
God I love the chaffee. Im happy that I've been able to see a few at different museums

Sometimes the funniest War Thunder moments come from driving around with a Gremlin Tractor instead of a proper tank. For me it was killing Leopard 1's in the ZSD63

Idk if u tried it yet, but the Breda 501, and to a lesser extent the 90/53M in the italian tree are really fun to play and mess around with. They do pen everything in their BR ranges and even when full uptiered they both perform incredibly well. It's a breather to take them for a ride when i find myself enraging in the high tier bs that plague the meta.
Seeing you play the m50 ontos would be pretty cool

Its so fast and the gun on it is still usable at BR 6.0. Its a lot of fun and one of my favourite American tanks in War Thunder.
I love the snubnose version of this thing, I always used that when I first started playing. Nicknamed it Snubby.
I had sold the Mig-21 event vehicle I'd gotten awhile back and used it to buy the M8A1, I freakin' love it. I pair it with my premium P-43 or I use it with my 3.3 line up. I have a 2-1 k/d so I find it funny you're complaining, same with the HSTV-L, I have more deaths then kills in it. lol Great video, it's nice to see someone use that bad boy for once.

Fun mode us line up for me is
M24, m4a1, m8a1 and any 2 planes I feel like in that br. Almost always a good time even in up tiers if you don't face too many KV's
One would have thought that the main gun would be the M6 light weight 75mm like the M-24. the M-3, M-4 and M-6 all share the same ammunition, but about half the weight of the M-3.

Same thing with M41A1. Apparently before I started playing the game it had "eras" instead of BRs that made M41 play against "historically accurate" enemies such as T-55 and after trying it multiple times by rolling it at 7.7. and getting uptiered to 8.7. I think it performs fairly well and it has no place being at 6.0.

This tank is my most played and it can pull it’s own weight even near top tier it’s all about the mindset when using it. Pretty much a skill issue if one can’t make it work in most situations.
AS unicorn reviews once said. The playstyle for the m8a1 is a never ending driveby
I enjoy bringing a bt-5 with my t-10a and killing leopards at 7.7 and up
It only sucks when I get a downteir to 6.7 and have to face king tigers with a bt-5

If you want another light tank that's good at any br, I'd recommend you head over to britain, the crusader mk.iii is rather underrated, it's half the height of a sherman and has the 6pdr with about 120mm of pen at 10 metres
I use it in my 4.7 lineup with my firefly and Churchill 7, I always take it first and usually I can get a shit ton of scouting and a couple kills if I get a good map

would you like to play with the japanese Ho-I? It is disgustingly OP at 2.0. It is mobile, has good armor, and an APHE that's like a mini KV-2 shell (75mm APHE with like 500g of TNT). Also 10 degs of gundep.

i would realy like to see you play the 7.7 heavy gaijin thinks is the best (AMX-50 surbias or something) because it looks funny and has a punchy gun with 6 sec reload.

I have the regular M8, the version with a short howitzer, and I can confirm that people tend to get more kills with it using the 50cal lol
