    Thanks for this vid. I dont want to come across as a dick, however just saying "ensure metal light switches are earthed" kind of defeats the object for people who have no idea how this is done. You could've made the video an extra 30 seconds longer and included this vital information.

      You need to attach the earth wire (yellow and green) to the metal box behind the socket. Just pop a screw in and make sure the wire is secured to the screw and touching the metal at the back. X

    you made it look so easy!
    the replacement kit had screws which didn’t fit properly and i had to strip one of the wires to ‘fatten up’ the contact for the screw to hold it in place. the replacement kit didn’t sit flush against the wall either, whereas the original one did. i should have been more precise on selecting the replacement… they all looked about the same to me 🙄

    I'm doing up my apartment before I move full time into my house. I did take a picture ages ago but can't find it. I don't know if the wires are wrong at the ceiling rose or the light switch, my bathroom/kitchen & hall work but my living room & bedroom don't. The wires go from my living room to the bedroom.
    All that is behind the wall switch is 3 reds, one ofcehich goes through the wall into the bedroom. Should that be in the L1 - L2 or the con? I can't tell where the other two are coming from, but I assume the ceiling. I have the other 2 reds in the L2 & nothing in the L1.
    Could you guide me please?

    What do I do if the plate at the back is metal and earthed and my new light switch is metal but there’s no second earth cable? Do I need to attach another earthing cable to the exiting one to screw into light switch or will it be okay because the actual metal plate at the back holding the wires is earthed? Currently changing my light switches and sockets and a bit stuck as there’s mixed opinions out there. Cheers

      It’s generally a term electricians use that means “protected from electric shock”. Earth relates to the green and yellow wire and there should be a terminal in the light switch where the green and yellow wire should be screwed into.

    Changed all the switches casings from plastic to brushed stainless steel. Lost the cables in the wall cavity and had to call an electrician to retrieve them. He advised that all the switches should be earthed in case a casing ever became live. There is no earth wire evident in the patras. Does the house need to be re wired to earth the lights only? I don't see you attach the earth wire in this video?

    • @reddou-kun6006
      @reddou-kun6006 6 лет назад

      iirc, The earth wire is already attached to the metal casing in the wall cavity. So I assume when you screw the switch back on to the brackets, the fascia should be earthed.

    • @robertreading8518
      @robertreading8518 6 лет назад +2

      If you are changing from plastic front to metal, the metal front also should be earthed because if you take the front off when you are decorating the metal is still earthed, so there wont be any accidents.

    • @ThomasTheDankEngineer
      @ThomasTheDankEngineer 6 лет назад +1

      In the light switch there should be an earth cable which is screwed into a terminal in the metal back box. This will give you a mechanical connection from the terminal at the back to the front plate of the light switch as metal conducts electricity. If there is no earthing cable in your light switch i would consult an electrician

However, I had to turn the whole fuse box off to be safe and this seems to have blown the power adaptor in one of our computers when I turned the electricity back on. Not a big deal - just had to buy another adaptor, but will remember to turn off the computers before I flick the 'off' switch. But it would have cost me a whole lot more to get an electrician in to do this job, so still saved myself a bit of money.

      It's because metal conducts electricity. If a wire came lose from the swith connection and touched the metal casing, you'd get electrocuted if you touched it. The earth connection on metal switches introduces a safety element if this were to happen.

    You'll notice that the plate screws have a little unthreaded bit at their tip. This is there deliberately to help them locate in the threaded holes in the patress.
    Putting them in can be fiddly.
    The easiest way to locate each of the two switch plate screws and get their threads started is to push them all the way home in the plate and hold them there with your driver in their slot to keep them there ready as you look in the gap to locate them; one at a time, obviously.
    This way, you're not locating it and having it drop out of position just as you put the driver in the slot.
    This can be a fiddly job with any technique if the screws are quite short and the patress is deep in the wall, as there's no gap to spy if they're located properly. You can get longer ones from electrical suppliers if necessary.

    Your wires are red and black instead of brown and blue, hmm wiring might be a bit old, but good video

      +Tanzil That's correct. It's and old house so more modern day wiring will be a different colour.

    I want to try this but have a fear of electrocution lol. Even if I switched off the mains I'd be worried about electrocuting myself. I want to change two of these plate sockets in my bedroom because they're old and scruffy

    How do i earth a metal switch when changing from plastic?

    • @tjfSIM
      @tjfSIM 6 лет назад +3

      There should be an earth terminal or point on the back of the new metal switch. You need to connect this to any other green and yellow wire you can see in the cavity. That's all. If you wire the switch in tightly and securely, it is extremely unlikely that any part of the cover plate would ever become live, but it's just a safety precaution.

      @ewanok switching to metal switches too. The metal box is earthed so does that mean I don't need to earth the switch face plate itself?

      @@oliversindotcom well you should "earth" it as well
