    I have to admit to not exactly being socially enlightened when I was a teen in the early 90s. It is a great thing that Patrick and Brian Burke took the lead and are showing a whole generation of young athletes to respect EVERYONE in the locker room. It is a simple message but it is being heard loud and clear. No one who is gay and wants to play sports should face any kind of discrimination. Lets leave it in the past where it belongs.

    How do you know you haven't met a homosexual hockey player? Last I checked, people don't wear name tags saying "Hey, I'm gay!" Sorry buddy, but you've probably met a few gay players. For obvious reasons, they were just not "out" to their teammates. I'm a straight man and have played hockey since I was 5. I love the game, and this video and initiative made me prouder of our sport than I've ever been.

    Love this!!! Its great to see the support available when the time comes that there is an openly gay player in the league.

    I think the reason you've never met an openly gay hockey player is the same reason why this campaign is happening. Either gay athletes quit the sport or they keep it a secret. I can guarantee you that you have met a homosexual hockey player at some point during your playing career.

    I completely agree with the message of this video, but I can't help feeling that if someone like Crosby came out as gay, people (i.e. Flyers Bruins and Rangers fans) would bash him for it nonstop. The reactions would probably be similar for Ovi too. (Yes I know he's engaged). I hope homophobic slurs can just be wiped out of the greatest sport on Earth. Kudos to all the players in this vid.

    @tihkon2 I want to understand why a gay person would find it offensive that a woman has a crush on another man. Gay or not, that comment is discriminating. If you are working for people to just even understand what you're fighting for, then you have to have a leveled view on everything, that includes gays and straight people. Right now, you just sound a person insecure about his own sexuality or a 10 year old... You should stop commenting unless you're a little smarter than that...

  • @Arkiasis

  • @goedmonton

    I guarantee you that if an openly gay player is released from his team, which the most likely reason is because he's a bad hockey player, the media will turn the reason into him being gay, not because he's a bad player.

    just to conclude lol these people are NOT ashamed of who they are. They are in fact so confident with their inner selves that they want so badly to express that with their appearance as well. imagine you were born a girl and desperately felt that you were a boy inside. your appearance and manly characteristics would likely frustrate you. You said that they're "going out of their way to become something they're not" when in fact they're trying desperately to become what/who they truly are.

  • @melaniewigner8534
    @melaniewigner8534 11 лет назад

    it's a valid question and I'll explain it to you. I've taken so many university sexuality classes it'd make your head spin lol "being ashamed of who they are" is wrong. It is that they are trying to become who they feel they were meant to be and wear THAT skin proudly, which takes just as much courage. transgender males do not feel as if they are gay, they feel as if they are females, so it isn't a matter of changing who they are, but rather attempting to match their outsides to their insides.

  • @Wishfuldrinking99
    @Wishfuldrinking99 12 лет назад

    I'm all for this, but from a realistic perspective, I don't think that it will ever end. The media will always make a big deal out of athletes being gay for the same reason they make a big deal out of any issue (sports, news, crime, politics) with race- they're trying to sell a story. While I think we have made great strides as a society in accepting the gay community, the media is what holds these issues back, and ultimately make them an issue to begin with, all so that they can make money.

    With Prayers and Condolences to the Burke Family on Brendan’s passing I also say Thank you from an advid NHL Ice Hockey Fan!
    To all LGBTQ people “If you can Play, you can play!” has meaning in Sport but the bigger message here is something you should believe and continue to strive for after you fill in the blank! If you can ______, you can _____! Do not allow Homophobia or your own fears hold you back from being who you can be!

  • @kiwehtin

    @igor2k10 What an idiotic comment. Yes, there are gay people in Russia, just like everywhere else in the world. Homosexual attraction is a natural if marginal trait inherited over millions of years in all kinds of species, including humans. And of course, you probably know that Piter has just passed a vicious law making it a "crime" to "propagandise" homosexuality. And you almost certainly also know the Russian slang word "голубой" used specifically for what you claim doesn't exist in Russia.

    @BoAchaser Why didn't you say 1 out of 5 people? Sounds better, haha.
    I am honestly surprised Sean Avery, as big an asshole in nearly every aspect of like he is, is not in this current video. He has shown support for the gay community nearly all of his career (that's the only time I respect the guy).
    As an athlete I can honestly say I do not care what sexuality, straight or gay, a teammate is. If he's a good guy and can contribute to the team, who the hell cares? Who cares anyhow

    A few weeks ago, Brian Burke showed his support by donning a uniform and skates to play for a couple of periods (at the Ricoh Centre in Toronto) during a match between two "pick-up" teams in the Toronto gay amateur hockey league. (Some of my friends were playing in that game.) Thanks, Mr. Burke, for showing your support in the best possible way! I enjoyed being in the audience, and my friends were truly appreciative of your presence!

  • @shivui

    @subikkon. I think I know where you're coming from, but from my perspective this is less about the legal right to play hockey and more about making people comfortable. I only play hockey in recreational leagues and I can say without hesitation that racist and homophobic comments are said casually and often. People even make comments privately about other players they even consider friends. There is a culture of intolerance in sports and it only exists because it hasn't been challenged.

    Can we all just agree that Henrik Lundqvist is one very handsome man? Because serious... his hair is flawless and overall so fucking handsome. Also, this movement, is something that everyone should get behind, it really doesn't matter what your sexual orientation is, like the men in the video said "if you can play, you can play"

    i like what they are doing, but the problem is not the NHL accepting gay athletes, its in juniors, how can you tell a 13-18 year old not to tease a person that's different. no gay athlete will accept the teasing and stick around long enough to make it to the NHL, i hope im wrong though....

    @igor2k10 "Hockey without gays"? (Which is what your Russian message says.) No. Gays are everywhere and contribute as much to the well-being of society as anyone else. And deserve all the same rights and opportunities anyone else enjoys.

    @puroeuroderek I think that might be at least part of the point of this vid, the players in Junior look up to the guys in the NHL, they want to BE them. So having your favorite playertell you homophobia is not cool? I'm SURE that will have an impact.
